A MESSAGE FROM
H
THE Potentate
ello Nobles ... By the time this reaches you in the mail we will be holding the “Spring-time in The Villages, a
Ceremonial” and a mini-get away. We will
report on the successes and fun had by all
in next month’s Caravan. Meanwhile, why
wait, go to the Bahia WEB site and look at
photos and sit back enjoy a cup of coffee
and look at the pictures.
The March meeting was a new experiment that was successful at the Orlando
Valley Scottish Rite and with other Florida Temples in encouraging attendance and
our fraternal brotherhood. The message by
Honorable Dick Batchelor was on target
with our fraternal goals and objectives. His
assisting in presenting the various awards
was a personal way to allow a non-Shriner
to experience firsthand our commitment to
the community, the children-patients and
our fellow man. Thank each of you who
were able to attend.
March was also a most busy month. One
night we had 3 different functions going on: more than 100 people to the Sam
Swope pre-ride party in the FEZ; a sold
out event of more than 200 in the dining
room raising money for the Ladies Oriental Shrine (when did you last attend a sold
out event at Bahia?) and in the Mosque we
hosted the High School Prom presented
by Best Buddies of Central Florida. Then
Sunday morning we had more than 450 for
breakfast and 650 motorcycles left Bahia
for the ride raising over $285,000 for the
Tampa Hospital. We had a full house when
Laura and Seven performed in the smoke
free night in the FEZ. Our High Priest
& Prophet suggested we offer smoke free
events in the FEZ and we will try this and
report back to you as to their success. Then
we hosted the first of 3 boxing events; the
income is not yet in, but it is sorely needed
for the general fund.
Here we are days away from the 59th annual Bahia Shrine Circus. This promises to
be one of our best ever. The Hanneford
Circus is bringing their “A” team and the
UCF Arena is cleaned and ready, the novelties are all fresh this year with the anticipation of our best ever year in novelties.
The cotton candy, popcorn and snow cones
are all ready to sell. This year we have shifted our advertising to a more current media effort. We used local papers and their
digital WEB sites; we used WEB sites and
(what is old is new again) Billboards both
lighted and the rotating digital ones along
the Interstates and Expressways. Our goal
is simple: to attract more attendance resulting in more income for Bahia. Isn’t it
hard to believe that this began as an outdoor (no tent) Circus at Tinker Field on
bleacher seating and now in a new air
conditioned Arena with comfortable seats.
Not bad, Nobles, you have done well to
bring it to this level. Next month we will
detail at the Stated Meeting and in the
Caravan the various areas of income and
expenses resulting in the success we had
with the 2013 Circus.
Now we need to focus on the fun ahead
of us and some include: May 01-04 the
Florida Shrine Association (FSA) Convention is only a few weeks away and it is
close by in Tampa. We need to support our
leaders in FSA and support them at their
annual meeting. The Motor Corps President Keith Yocum has done an excellent
job and we cannot let him down. No Bahia
motorized Unit should be left out of the
competition and it will be nice to bring
home all the Motor Corps Trophies. The
Week of May 6th – 9th will be the Unit
Rush Week….this is your chance to attract
new members to your Unit or Club; look
to the 1st CM and Oriental Guide’s articles to get the details. Lastly, on June 1st
we have a Membership Night planned at
the Orlando Predators game. Our Bahia
LOH can actually be live on National TV
for the flag presentation.
Next, the reorganized FEZ is becoming
successful thanks to each of you and Noble
Millard. The details are in the Fez article
which introduces the new FEZ girls to
you. If you have not come in and tried the
Cuban sandwiches, ham and cheese or pizza slices, we now have a good tasting and
affordable bar menu similar to Sahib and
Egypt. Make your suggestions for menu
changes to Millard.
Finally, we had scheduled a get-away to
St. Augustine for November but we were
not able to negotiate reasonable/affordable
rates and I decided to accept the invitation
of Alee Shriners Potentate to visit their
City, Savannah. More information coming
soon on that.
Thank you for all your ideas and suggestions, it has taken time to make them
happen. So, if we cannot immediately implement your ideas that is because we are
investigating how to make them successful. Please keep your ideas coming in, I do
listen and try and implement.
Yours in the Faith,
Michael T. Rudd, Potentate

a message from
N
first lady cyndi
ot only do we have a “jam up” breakfast
bunch-we have a “great crew”. Everyone has been wonderful about the new challenges and learning experiences we are all going through and it’s great working with them.
When you come to the Pancake Breakfast, let
the workers know you do appreciate everything
they are doing for Bahia.
Has everyone taken a good look as to what
happens in the Red Fez? Bar Bingo, Texas
Hold’em, Burgers & Brats, Tailgate parties, Fun
Fridays, Jazz Band night; and that’s just the regular events scheduled. Think of the times we use
the Red Fez for the special events throughout
the years!
As you see gentlemen, I have ladies stepping
up to the plate-this sounds like a challenge,
right? They are working hard to make you proud
to bring your family, friends and visiting Nobles
to the Red Fez. There is still much more money
needed.
FUNDRAISERS FOR THE FIRST LADY’S PROJECT
• “Message in a Bottle” fundraiser that will
carry on until Sept. 15th-the tickets are on sale
now for $10
• Anti-flocking insurance so you can protect
yourself from being flocked (anytime during
2013) by flamingos in your front yard or maybe
you’d like to flock a friend’s yard (just for fun)
from first ceremonial master

am once again honored to be chosen in 2013
to be Bahia’s First Ceremonial Master and
want to thank the entire Divan and Nobility
for working with me on a daily basis to make
our events run as smoothly as possible.
With our first ceremonial at the Villages
right around the corner, this weekend is not
only very important to bring in new brothers
but also a great excuse to get out and socialize
with the thousands of men in Central Florida
we call Brothers.
For some of those Nobles you have not seen
in awhile, maybe it is time to pick up the telephone and get them involved.
What better way than a nice Friday golf outing and weekend in the Villages to get things
going.
A tip of the Fez to the Villages Shrine Club
for having such a fun and organized weekend
planned. They have a very dedicated group of

Nobles and hopefully many of you will make
the trip and spend a night or two.
Every time I crack open my calendar book, I
find myself looking ahead to the next fun and
exciting event. I can hardly wait for the next
weekend to see what new stories we can tell
and what new Nobles and Ladies we may share
memories with.
Looking ahead we have so many events like
the Potentate’s getaways, Monte Carlo night,
Sportsman’s raffle and expo and Imperial to
look forward to.
Be positive, Stay positive and Get active.

Continuous improvement!!!!
That is what we have going
on at Bahia in the musicians
corner. What a great time to
be singing, playing and planning for more events and more
talent. We have a wealth of talented folks and more and more
of them are becoming active.
Big thanks to all of the participants in all of our many musical
events for the temple. Just a few
highlights:
The Rat Pack dinner was a
SOLD OUT event!! When was
the last time we had that happen?? The LOS ladies did a great
job of promotion! Good job!
The Concert Band sponsored
a swing dance in the main auditorium to a crowd of over 400
dancers. Big thanks to Bill Thee,
Michael Catello, Wilbur Smith,
Rich Wirth, and Bennett Harmon for chaperoning the event.
The Dixieland Band played
for breakfast at the Sam Swope
ride. The food and the music
were good and the ride was well
attended. Our thanks to Art
Horton for the hard work of he
and his team.
The Red Fez was a- buzz
with excitement as the Concert Band provided entertainment to a packed house. People danced to the tunes of the
Combo and Kathi from All
Occasions provided some very
tasty food offerings. Thanks to
all and especially Millard for a
job well done.

ROAD News FROM
motorcyle unit
I
n February, the Motorcycle Unit was active,
but also experienced several sad losses. Lady
Rosie Desjardins passed away suddenly. Rosie
was the wife of Past President Mike Desjardins. Bob Reko, twice Past President, and one
of the longest serving members of the Motorcycle Unit, also passed after lingering health
issues. Our thoughts and prayers are with the
families of these wonderful people. We would
also like to send our condolences to the family of Charles “Rock-O” Rockey. Thanks to
everyone who showed up from both the Motorcycle Unit and Iron Horses.
We also did a Poker Run for Valentine
Day, sponsored by Seminole Harley Owners Group. Ric Roberts won the drawing for

hat a great year we have had so far with
President Kevin Boland at the helm.
We have so many great times this year and
a new direction for the Iron Horses is ahead.
Our new email system is up and running so
if you have not received weekly emails please
contact myself or Ric Roberts. The Sam
Swope Charity Ride was again a great success again and thank you to everyone who put
in countless hours making this a great event
and one of Central Florida’s largest single day
charity events.
The unit has had great turnouts at all our
rides and parades so far this year. I know
that the current officers want to make posi-
tive changes and bring back more rides, unit
socials, and the brotherhood that our unit was
founded upon. We have once again started
doing dinners before our monthly meetings
so please RSVP during meeting week to
make sure you and your Lady our covered.
The Iron Horses have two huge fundraisers
planned for 2013. First is the brick project we
have for the Shrine. We are selling personalized brinks that will eventually span the entire
front of the Mosque covered front entrance.
This project is also designed to give a very
large portion of money back to Bahia general
funds. Please ask an Iron Horse member how
you can purchase your personalized brink.

The Unit has also decided to host Food
Truck Nights here at Bahia. As you may
know, food trucks are super “hot” right now
and what a great way to get the Nobles and
more importantly the local community to our
facilities for food and great times. The trucks
in April will be here the second and fourth
Thursday from 5pm to 9pm. Please bring your
family and friends to enjoy some of Central
Florida’s finest food trucks.
With so many events coming up we are
always looking for an excuse to ride and for
some of you, knock the tips off those new
tires. Leesburg bike fest is this month and
FSA is right around the corner. We will be
setting up the O-Course on a weekend or two
so come out and have a cold drink and clip
some cones with us. Live Free, Ride Hard,

KISMET COURT NO. 86, LOSNA
UPDATES AND NEWS
W
e had a very busy March with several fun
events. The Bahia Pancake Breakfast
Bake, Craft & Book sale kicked it all off – many,
many pancake eaters showed up so we were very
busy out in the lobby too! Lady Ruby Pierson,
PHP, received more tabs and new books were
donated to the Ways & Means table– thanks
so much! Right after the breakfast, fifteen from
the Court (plus one future Kismet Lady, baby
Lynn Kilmartin, who slept the whole time!) participated in the Winter Park St. Patrick’s Day
Parade. We had a great time tailgating with refreshments while waiting for the parade to start
– ok, maybe all of us weren’t overjoyed with the
breezy and CHILLY temps, but while there we
had LOTS of fun catching up, making plans for
future events and chatting it up with our fellow
paraders! Lady Tracey Johns popped over and
took a group picture! Thanks Tracey! Lady Linda Holley, outgoing HP and Lady Candy Gillespie, incoming HP, both rode in convertibles.
Ladies Cyndi Rudd, PHP & 1st Lady of Bahia
and Nelda Eunice, PHP marched with Kismet’s
Court banner while the rest of the us handed
out candy, toys & mementos to the largest crowd
we have ever seen for this parade. After, we all
went back to Bahia’s Red Fez to meet up with
our Nobles for hot dogs and refreshments. It
really was such an enjoyable day. The following
weekend was the HUGELY successful, sold out,
Vegas Rat Pack Style Italian dinner on March
9th – many more details and pics next month.
At our Stated Meeting we welcomed 8 new ladies! And new mom, Lady Kim Kilmartin, was
elected to the office of 1st Ceremonial Lady. She
will be responsible for sending much needed
donated items to one of the Shrine Hospitals.
Please support her -“our kids” so depend on all
of us to make their hospital stays a little brighter.
If you know of any lady, related to a Mason, who
would like to join LOSNA, please contact one
of us! March 24th was our Open Installation of
new officers for 2013-2014. Lady Candy Gillespie, HP, and her officers were installed with
pomp, ceremony and fun! Hope to see you at
our Court meeting, April 10th. Come find out
what new & exciting things are planned for
Kismet in the upcoming year! If anyone needs a
ride, PLEASE contact me-we will work to find
a way to get you there and back home! Until
next month, please keep our country as well as
the troops & their families, at home & abroad,
in your thoughts & prayers, as we continue to
have “Fun, Fellowship and Philanthropy!”

TRAFFIC REPORT FROM
THE RV CLUB
Hello to all you Happy Campers.
Our March camp out was held
at John and Wilma Green’s Ranch
in Oxford. It was well attended and
we had our annual chili cook off. We
had five chilis in the competition and
boy was it hard to pick a winner. But,
we had to pick winners and they will
be announced next month.
April camp out will be held at
Paradise Oaks in Bushnell on April
19 – 21st. . We always have a great
time at the camp outs with lots of
good food and fellowship.
The RV Club will be manning
Ice Cream machines at the Shrine
Circus and we are looking forward
to it. We have a lot of workers
signed up for helping out.
If you are a previous member of
the RV Club and no longer have an
RV, remember you can rejoin the
club and camp with us at any campground that has cabins or rentals
available. We would love to see you.
If you have an RV and would like
to join our Club, please contact one
of the members for an application.
On Fridays of most camp outs
some of the members get together
and play golf near the campground.
If you are interested in joining us

NOBLE TRUCKERS
ROAD UPDATE
Well Nobles, the Noble Truckers
are off and running this year. We
are running ahead, on our collections, of last year, so far this year.
The economy hasn’t seemed to
bother our collection at all.
We have two new members that
have said they would be glad to
help collect at any time we need
them. That is a good thing, because
some of us have been doing this for
so long, we need a break.
We are still meeting at our new
place.
The “Sandhill Golf and
Country Club” has turned out
to be the best place we have ever
met. I have not heard of any complaints.
The Truckers are planning on
a huge “Yard Sale” sometime this
year. A time has not been set, but
it will be a huge event. They are
even talking about food being there
for all to purchase.
We want to thank our ladies,
“The Noble Truckers Pit Crew,”
for all the things they do for us
through-out the year.
The Truckers and Pit Crew are
planning on getting back into a few
parades this year. We have several
local parades that we used to attend
on a regular basis. We plan on that
again.
10
This might be a little late, but the
“Noble Truckers” wish all the new
officers of all the Clubs, Units and
B.S.Cs, a very good and prosperous
year. This also goes for the Divan.
The Truckers have turned down
several events for collecting, as they
are out of our jurisdiction. I am in
the process of contacting Nobles
in those jurisdictions. Several of
the shows we do here at the Volusia County Fairgrounds, also do
shows in Tampa, Lakeland, Fort
Myers, and Vero Beach.
The
Tampa Hospital personnel are on
board with this also. Each one of
those shows are at least 3 weekends
a year. Good for approximately $
500.00 to $1,000.00, or more, for
a weekend.
I am sure the, Orange County,
Lake County, Seminole County,
and Osceola County, all have their
own Fairgrounds or at least a place
for their Fairs to be held. These are
all good places to collect at, for the
Hospitals. I am in the process of
finding out which have their own
Fairgrounds and who the contact
person or persons are.
To all you golfers: Keep it on
the Fairway. If not, don’t forget,
“FORE.”

A MESSAGE FROM THE
IMPERIAL POTENTATE
Dear Shrine Masons,
Participating in the various associations’ mid-winter
meetings has given me the
opportunity to stress increasing membership as the TOP
Priority. We can accomplish
this by promoting more family fun, more fellowship and
certainly more brotherly
LOVE in our temples and
emphasizing these points
when we share our Shriners stories with prospective
members.
Attending the Midwest
Shrine Association MidWinter meeting in Duluth,
Minn., was an invigorating experience - daytime temperatures were in the teens. Imperial
Officers who traveled with me were Imperial
Sirs Jim Smith, Jim McConnell, Dale Stauss,
PIP/Chairman of the Board Doug Maxwell
and PIP Gary Dunwoody.
The business meeting, conducted by President/PP Steve Kavacic and Secretary/Treasurer PP Del Koons, was well organized and
effective. In addition to the serious business of
the meeting, we had some Shriner fun. MSA’s
midwinter boat races are always a highlight.
This year was no different – the races were a
lot of fun, as was the encouragement to participate provided by our chief medical officer
Dr. Ken Guidera. For his many efforts on behalf of our organizations and his enthusiasm,
he was presented with an Imperial Potentate
medallion.
The Midwest Shrine Association has a lot
to celebrate. Five of Midwest’s temples have
achieved GOLD status in increasing membership. Many others are at the silver and
bronze level! This Midwest Shrine Association has the potential of having all its temples
reach GOLD status in a couple years. We’d
like to challenge other associations to aspire
to a similar goal!
The 139th Imperial Council pre-convention meeting in Indianapolis was next on
the agenda. The Indianapolis Team, under
the direction of Director General Jeff Zaring and Deputy Director General Bill Rasner
and their ladies, Margie and Vicki, are well
prepared. Schedules, area maps, tours, ticket
information, hotel listings are available on the
website. Check it out at www.imperial2013.
com.
Deputy Imperial Potentate John Cinotto
and I, along with our ladies, Jan and Margaret, hope you all plan to be with us from June
30th to July 4th.
The parade will be on
Monday evening and the
clowns will be leading the
parade. Many of our ladies
groups have clown units
and they have been invited
to participate in the parade,
too. All of the clowns will be
in front of the color guard.
We hope to set a Guinness
World record with the most
clowns (851) in a parade.
Next, we visited the Spokane Shriners Hospital. Our
time there included a donor
development
recognition
event. We also met with
Board of Governors Chairman Von Chimienti, acting Administrator Craig “Patch”
Patchin, and Chief of Staff Paul Caskey, M.D.
Discussion topics included needed improvements to the operating rooms, parent housing
and parking.
We attended the Pacific Northwest Shrine
Association Mid-Winter meeting in Coeur
d’Alene, Idaho. Calam Shriners, led by Potentate Rob Turnipseed, hosted the meeting.
The meetings were well attended with a full
agenda prepared by President Gordon Brewer and Secretary/Treasurer PP Larry Tipton.
Other Imperial Officers in attendance were
Deputy Imperial Potentate John Cinotto, and
Imperial Sirs Bill Bailey, Jim Cain and PIP
Bob Turnipseed.
As always, there was a lot of fun and great
fellowship for everyone. Isn’t that what we’re
all about - “Fun with a purpose?”
From Spokane, we traveled to the Conference of Grand Masters in Kansas City, Mo.,
with Imperial Officers EVP/PIP Jack Jones,
Chris Smith, Jerry Gantt, Dale Stauss, Deputy Imperial Potentate John Cinotto, PGM
Jeff Sowder and PGM Trustee Bobby Simmons.
Imperial Sir Jack Jones and I had an opportunity to address the West Coast Conference
of Grand Masters on Saturday concerning
the problems in Arkansas and South Carolina.
Monday morning, our Imperial Officers
and Trustees were introduced at the assembly of Grand Masters. Tuesday morning we hosted the Frank S. Land Memorial Breakfast. My remarks stressed working
together to bring our by-laws closer in an
effort to eliminate the many problems we
have had in the past with various Grand
Lodges.
This is the speech I presented to those in
attendance (320+) –
Remarks by Al Madsen – Frank S. Land
Breakfast – Feb 19, 2013
“Distinguished Head Table, Most Worshipful
and Right Worshipful Sirs, Illustrious Sirs, fellow Nobles, Brothers and Guests………..
It is my great honor to be here today at the
Frank S. Land Memorial Breakfast.
Shriners International has been pleased to
sponsor this breakfast for more than “50” years.
It is a wonderful opportunity for the leaders of
our Masonic family organizations to get together
and renew and strengthen friendships.
This year’s breakfast is even more meaningful.
We are in Kansas City, the home town of Frank
S. Land. If we had to select an individual who
represents the bonds shared by Masons and Shriners, Frank S. Land would certainly be a clear
and excellent choice.
Frank Land was a very active Mason with
deep roots in his community and a genuine concern for the well-being of others. This concern led
him to found the Order of DeMolay, an organization dedicated to helping young men develop
civic and personal responsibility, as well as leadership skills.
Frank Land, like many Master Masons, went
on to become a Shriner. The Shriners fraternity
was founded to provide “family fun and fellowship” for fellow Master Masons, and that remains its purpose today – with the addition of
supporting our philanthropy – Shriners Hospitals for Children.
In the 1954-55 Imperial Year, Frank S. Land
served as our Imperial Potentate. Clearly, he
represents and symbolizes the bonds between
Shriners and Masonry, and the commitment we
share to improve our communities and the world
around us.
The Masonic principles of brotherhood, relief
and truth are at the core and basis of Shriners
International.
We have been part of the same family – the
Masonic family of organizations – since day one
– one hundred forty years ago. The Shriners organization is proud and honored to be a member
of this family.
Shrine Masons are committed to improving the lives of children, especially through our
philanthropy, Shriners Hospitals for Children.
What began 90 years ago as a single hospital
built in response to the needs of children struggling with the after-effects of the polio virus, is
now a health care system with 22 hospitals in
the U.S., Canada and Mexico caring for children
dealing with all types of orthopaedic conditions,
burns, spinal cord injuries and cleft lip and palate, regardless of the families’ ability to pay for
services.
Our staff conducts innovative research to improve treatment protocols, and provides excellent

13
education opportunities for medical professionals.
In 2012, Shriners Hospitals for Children
spent $2.2 million per day on that commitment
to provide expert medical care to children.
We know that our Masonic brothers also contribute to, support and take pride in that effort,
and we thank you.
Together, through Shriners Hospitals for Children, we have given hope and healing to more
than 1 million children since the first Shriners
Hospital opened in Shreveport, La., 90 years ago.
We recently heard a story about a family in
Pennsylvania. A young girl was born with only
one hand, and her grandmother was having difficulty finding medical assistance for the child.
She turned to a friend, who was a Mason. He
contacted his Lodge Master.
The Master contacted a Shriner, who also happened to be a Past Master at another Lodge in
the area. The Shriner contacted our nearest hospital offering the appropriate services to the family. And today, the little girl is learning to use
her new prosthetic hand, which she has named
“Lefty.”
We accomplish great things when we work together.
Every family, at times, experiences some
difficulty and discord. Again, the Shriners
fraternity, the Blue lodges and the Grand
Lodges have recognized one another and
worked together in a spirit of amity and harmony for one- hundred-forty years. Shriners
and Masons share a brotherhood, camaraderie and commitment to the same ideals.
This is not a perfect world, and there is not
a perfect family. However, true brothers and
families choose to work together when there
are difficulties or disagreements.
It is my fervent hope and my deepest wish
that Shrine Masons and Masons both remain
within the Masonic brotherhood, committed
to open, respectful dialogue, to resolving any
differences that may exist, and to continuing
to make the world a better place – together.
May God bless us and keep us working together in amity.
THANK YOU…”
Ararat Potentate Wayne H Spencer and
the divan officers hosted The Imperial delegation at dinner Monday evening. It was an
excellent opportunity for shared conversation and fellowship. We thank them for their
warm welcome and great hospitality.
After the conference we traveled to International Shrine Clown Association MidWinter meeting in Huntsville, Ala. Other
Imperial Officers in attendance were Wayne
Latchut and Jim Cain, along with their ladies,
Jan and Janet. Association President Mark
Burgad, a Noble from Naja Shriners (AKA
Buzzy), and Incoming President George
Pipes (AKA Patches) provided a super program of competition including entertaining
skits. The “Powder Puff ” category included
three lady clowns.
The Recorders Seminar in New Orleans
didn’t let the rainy weather detract from an
enjoyable dinner cruise on the “Mighty”
Mississippi. The lead entertainer, saxophone
player Jerry Embree , was made a Shriner the
next day. He will enjoy Jerusalem’s ceremonial
scheduled for April 27.
An outstanding program was prepared by
PP and President John Williamson and Secretary Phil Johnson. Other Imperial Officers
in attendance were Deputy Imperial Potentate John Cinotto and Imperial Recorder/PIP
and EVP Jack Jones and Imperial Chief Rabban Dale Stauss.
In closing it’s important to again mention that Imperial Session is coming up fast.
Please get to know the candidates running for
Imperial Outer Guard and Shrine Hospital
Trustee, so you can make the best, most informed choices. They are:
Outer Guard candidates:
1. Joe Savaglio,PP - Kismet Shriners
2. Kenny Craven, PP - Omar Shriners
3. Paul Frank, PP - Philae Shriners

As of March 1st, only 26% of

payable to “Bahia Shrine Circus”.
You can use the coupons for yourself, and family, or give them to
whomever you wish for their use,
or you can return them with the

If you are not going to pur-

Last month I asked for a Uniformed Unit, Shrine Club or

NAUTICAL NEWS FROM

THE yacht club
ebruary was a great month for
the Yacht Club. We started out
with our Annual Chili Cook Off at
the Campbells house. Every year the
competition get stronger. This year
we had to limit the entries to eight.
Yours truly got first place. A picture
with the trophy given by Roy Campbell is attached. The chili was not the
only highlight of the evening. The
Yacht Club and keeping with the
tradition of having the best cooks in
the Shrine out did themselves again
with salads, desserts, corn bread etc.
We’d like to thank the Campbells for
their hospitality and the use of their
beautiful home.
Our Feb. meeting was long,
but we accomplished a lot. Kicking off the first meeting of the
Yacht Sportsman Club, we talked about what everyone wants
out of a Sportsman Club. We
are going to start slow with target shooting and fishing for a
start, then it will progress with
whatever interest anyone has. A
added note, we signed up three
new members.
If you are interested in the Yacht
Sportsman Club, we meet the 3rd
Tuesday of the month in D room

Princess Louise Lively sends thanks
to all who have donated to the Hospital
Committee. We can always use fabric,
elastic, Velcro, sewing thread, yarn and
extra hands for sewing. We always have
a wonderful time together and have
many items ready to mail out to the dif-
ferent hospitals. In addition to our sewing projects, we collect underwear, gift
cards, t-shirts, shorts, toys and craft kits
all the time; also can tabs, soup labels
and box top credits. She asks when you
travel to please save the small shampoo,
soaps, etc. Most any donation, including money can be used. We appreciate
Pr. Louise Lively’s dedication to this
project and the time and energy put
into it by all those who work with her
in this “labor-of-love”. They welcome
you to join them in any way you can,
there is plenty to do and you don’t even
need to know how to sew.
With the beauty of Spring around us
and the anticipation of a new year, we
are rejuvenated to continue in our most
lofty goal; supporting the Shriner’s
Hospitals for Children.

“And that’s when I stopped
making any profit whatsoever. So
for the last 25 years, I have been
doing all my clowning strictly for
charity. … It’s still blossoming
and I’m at 72 years of age.”
Rockey was the president of the
Bahia Shrine Clown Unit. Longtime friend and member of the
unit with him, Richard LaVanture
started clowning with Rockey before the two moved to Florida.
“We’ve been clowning together
for 25 years,” said LaVanture, who
goes by the clown name Bozem.
“He and I clowned for Zembo
Shrine in Harrisburg when we
lived in Pennsylvania.
“He enjoys clowning and putting a smile on the kids’ faces,
and I think because of the way
he handles himself when he is in
clown makeup, Rock-O is a good
clown.”
Rockey didn’t just clown in
Central Florida, however. Every
August Rockey traveled to the
Mid-Atlantic Burn Victim Sur-
vivors Summer Camp in Harrisonburg, Va., where he and three
friends clowned for children who
had survived severe burns.
For over 10 years, teaching fire
safety through clowning was one
of his passions.
Whether it was using a dollhouse to teach children how to
escape if there is a fire or using a
trick vase to teach children how
to treat burns with cold water,
Rockey loved having fun while
helping keep children safe.
He also clowned for an annual
Christmas party in Pennsylvania
for children with fatal illnesses.
“When you get a hug from one
of these children, it’s miraculously
great,” Rockey said. “You get the
feeling that I’ve done something
good, and that’s me. That’s me all
over.”
The memory of Rock-O will
never be forgotten, for all of the
smiles and laughter he brought
to children through the years. He
will be missed greatly.

APRIL call from
the bingo hall
Bingo continues to have its
ups and downs. We had 150
paid players for our last February meeting (spaghetti) night.
This has been our highest draw
in over a year, and we grossed
well over $2,100.00 for Bahia’s
Budget. This is where we need
to be EVERY week. If we are
to do this we need to provide
the paying public an adequate
staff, both in our canteen, on the
paper line and with our callers
and the payout people. We are
not asking for you, the Nobility whom we support, to become Bingo Bunch members,
all we ask is that you give one
night a month for the time per
night that you can. We have lost
a number of good workers to
the Black Camel, others have
left our ranks due to illness or
job conflicts. Please stop some

Cincinnati Hospital Connects
with Patients Across the Nation
Have you ever spoken with a physician about your health condition by telephone? Have you used the internet to gather information for a medical condition? If so, you have used a form of telemedicine. Use of this technology to
exchange medical information from one site to another is called telemedicine
or telehealth.
Once considered a specialty niche, telemedicine is quickly becoming a new standard of
care for hospitals and healthcare providers
across America and Shriners Hospitals for
Children - Cincinnati is on board. The Cincinnati hospital is committed to providing patients, families, staff and communities with
access to our services through the use of
this technology.
Cincinnati offers telemedicine sites in Twin
Cities, MN - Chicago, IL - Peoria, IN - Terre
Haute, IN - Evansville, IN - Kansas City, MO
- St. Louis, MO - Greenville, SC - Atlanta,
GA - Savannah, GA and Tampa, FL. Staff at
the telemedicine site has equipment that
is also in place in Cincinnati. This allows
both teams to send video (pictures) and audio (sound) back and forth. It is a live twoway interactive video-conferencing, which
means the patient is able to see and talk to
the doctor through TV. Information is sent
directly across the phone lines, making it
more secure and more dependable than the internet. Physicians, nurses and
therapists from Cincinnati can easily see how a patient is progressing using this
technology without the travel and time away from home, school and work.
Telemedicine has been a great solution to these challenges. “We treat patients with burn injuries, cleft lip and palate,
hairy nevus, gynocomastia, portwine stains, and a number of other diagnoses” says Katrina Brunsman, RN and Telemedicine Coordinator at Shriners Hospitals for Children - Cincinnati. “Typical patients that may take part in a telemedicine
clinic visit are post-operative patients or patients that we only evaluate yearly.”
As a specialized center of excellence, Shriners Hospitals for Children – Cincinnati sees the great potential of telemedicine
in the future of burn care and other medical conditions treated here. Telemedicine enables our hospital to extend medical
expertise to the communities where we serve. In addition, time will be saved, costs will be streamlined, and patients
and families will experience improved healthcare quality and accessibility. We are able to provide needed services to our
patients,” shares Katrina. “This results in increased patient satisfaction.”

LEGIon of honor
S
pring 2013 has been a very busy time for the
Bahia Legion of Honor. First was the installation of officers. Then came the hosting of
refreshments for the Porcelain Show, followed
quickly be the hosting of refreshments for the
Military Show.
The Porcelain Show was held at the Temple
on 27-29 January. This was the first time that
the LOH was asked to provide refreshments
for the show participants. Everything went
well and Commander Coughlin reports that
a profit was realized. Further, he would like
to thank everyone who participated and supported the project.
Then on 9-10 February, the LOH hosted
refreshments for the Military Show at Bahia
Temple. Again, the Legionnaires took one step
forward, serving the refreshments with pride
and honor.
But we know who made the two projects successful, the Ladies of the LOH. To them we
are forever thankful. Thanks, Ladies. You do
us proud.
To show we Legionnaires care, we had Ladies Appreciation Night at our February meeting. It was a catered affair, enjoyed by everyone,
especially the Ladies because they didn’t have to
cook.
During the month of March, the LOH provided burgers for the Red Fez on Saturdays.
Again, lots of Legionnaires showed up to lend
support and help. Thanks, Legionnaires.

2013 bahia sportsman’s
raffle & Expo
W
e are back and ready to make this great
event even more of a success in 2013. The
date for 2013 is September 14th from noon to
5pm here at Bahia. For those of you who participated last year, thank you for all of your hard work
and dedication. We raised over $16,000.00 for
Bahia general funds last year and hope to double
that in 2013. The raffle portion will again sell
raffle tickets at $20.00 each for a change to win
one of over 40 long guns and gift cards.
If you are not a gun person, the value can be
used at Mosquito Creek Outdoors for anything
your heart may desire.
This year we have a new Chairman, Tom Lucas
and a great group of Nobles and Ladies who are
fired up about what 2013 will bring. For starters,
Mosquito Creek outdoors in Apopka has again
title sponsored our event. They did a great job
last year and their store in Apopka has everything
from hunting to fishing to clothing for the entire
family.
Browning Outdoors has given us the opportunity to work with them and be a key part
of our event. Every gun in the raffle is made
by Browning so we have truly raised the bar
this year.
The date again is September 14th and the entire campus of Bahia will be transformed to an
outdoorsman’s dream. We will have many new
vendors both inside and out the facilities. A giant
silent auction is planned in the Mosque as well
and entertainment and live bands outside to calm

your soul. The day of events will also have casting classes, cancelled weapons training, product
demonstrations and food trucks galore. We will
have motorcycles, RV’s and the latest boats and
personal watercraft on site so make sure you bring
all your friends and family. We are always looking
for people who want to set up booths so please
contact the office is you are interested in being a
part of the expo portion. Raffle tickets are available in the office or go to Bahiasportsmansexpo.
com for more info.
The sportsman’s committee meets monthly
and we are always looking for people to help
plan, call on potential sponsors and vendors, or
just want to be involved and even grab a free slice
of pizza during the meeting.
The April meeting is on the 15th at 7pm in the
dining room. Hope to see everyone there and be
ready to make the raffle and expo a great success
in 2013.
