The Vario can be used as a basis for a diverse
range of bodies. (The bodies shown here are not
directly available ex-factory.)
Tailor-made transport: an idea with staying power
Take the advantages of a van, combine them with the strengths of a light-duty truck
and apply a modular principle. The result is a recipe for success – a recipe to which
the Vario owes its exceptional positioning within the van segment. To ensure that it
maintains that position, we have built in a little futureproofing – with modified
engines and transmissions, a new interior and above all with BlueTec® – SCR diesel
technology from Mercedes-Benz, which enables the Vario to comply with the EURO4
emissions standard.
The Vario is available in over 60 exfactory variants, models ranging from
the more conventional panel van to
chassis variants for specific body solutions. This immensely broad, applicationoriented range and the wide variety
of individualisation and custom-body
options ensure that there is a Vario
for virtually every commercial need.
Or in other words, the Vario that doesn’t
exist has yet to be invented.

Presenting the ideal business model
Based on an adaptable range of combinations and custom-body options, the Vario
model series offers tailor-made yet cost-effective vans for your transportation needs.
Ideal, whether you’re transporting packaged or bulk goods, urgent deliveries or
sensitive items, tools or a whole team of workers. Whichever variant you decide on,
there are certain core qualities that all of our Vario models share – the legendary
quality, reliability and longevity that characterise a Mercedes-Benz van.
The panel van. Space in abundance
Load capacities similar to those of a light-duty truck combined with the handling
qualities of a van – if this is what you are looking for, the Vario panel van is the
perfect solution. In terms of both payload and capacity, this is a giant among vans and,
as such, the ideal partner in regional haulage, in industry and commerce, in the
removals business or in the public sector.
The Vario panel van offers a choice of
different capacities and equipment,
designed to meet your own personal requirements and to tailor your van specifically to your intended use. The panel
van is packed with intelligent, wellengineered details: the virtually vertical
side walls and the flattened wheel housings, for example, ensure an effective
use of space when stacking or when adding individual interior fittings. The
Vario panel van is ideally designed for
loading Europallets too.

(3700 and 4250 mm wheelbase)

The dropside. A reliable partner
With its proven record as one of life’s “takers”, the Vario dropside offers maximum
payload limits which make it perfect for heavy loads – ideal, for example, in the
construction industry, in the building materials trade, in the haulage sector or when
transporting packaged goods. It is available with a standard cab or a crew cab.
The crew cab comfortably seats up to 7 – and still leaves plenty of room for cargo in
the dropside body*.
Choosing a Vario dropside means refusing to compromise – both in terms of
suitability for everyday use and in terms
of longevity. The various sizes of aluminium dropsides feature solid fixtures
and a robust design – everything is where
it should be, and there is an unmistakable logic behind every design decision.
You can tell straight away that this is
a van that is based on practic al expertise
and designed for practical use.

The tipper. A versatile all-rounder
When the load is heavy and the roads are narrow, the Vario tipper comes into its own.
With power steering and a turning circle approaching that of a car, it is as impressive
on cramped building sites as it is in the market gardening and landscaping sectors.
The extremely practical combination of high payload and easy handling is also available with a crewcab as an option*.
True to their origins, all Vario tippers are
extremely versatile. Configured as a
three-way tipper ex-factory, they can be
loaded with up to around 3.8 tonnes
and unloaded from the right, left or rear.
And if you have to deal with more than
your fair share of rough terrain, you will
appreciate the versions with permanent
all-wheel drive and standard-fitted interaxle and rear differential locks*.
▸ Two wheelbase variants*
▸ Payload of up to around 3.8 t thanks
to reinforced tipper* body and reinforced frame*
▸ Available with optional crew cab, which
seats up to 7, instead of standard cab*
▸ Vario 813 DA/816 DA/818 DA allwheel-drive tippers designed for use
on rough terrain (medium vehicles)*
*Factory fitted tipper bodywork not available in the UK.

layout and functionality of the cab and the robustness of the materials used.

Comfort is a key factor here. After all, the job is stressful enough.
The interior of the Vario has a straightforward design, free of unnecessary clutter that could distract the driver from
the task in hand. The design focuses on
taking the stress off the driver and
providing the others on board with a
relaxed, comfortable ride.

BlueTec® SCR diesel technology
BlueTec® is the pioneering SCR diesel
technology from Mercedes-Benz: a costeffective and ecological solution which
helps your Vario to comply with the
EURO4 emissions standard. The SCR
(Selective Catalytic Reduction) exhaust
gas treatment process uses technology
capable of ensuring the necessary reduction in exhaust gas emissions while
optimising engine output and fuel consumption at the same time. The BlueTec® system includes modified engines
with a higher peak pressure, which
improves combustion and reduces the
number of particulates. Further com-
ponents of the system include a catalytic
converter and an AdBlue tank. AdBlue
additive is simply filled up from a pump
and carried in this separate tank on board.
From here it is fed via a metering unit
into the exhaust gas from the engine and
is converted by the heat into ammonia,
which is required for the chemical reaction in the catalytic converter. The catalytic reaction here converts the nitrogen
oxides into ecologically harmless substances – nitrogen and water.
Anti-lock braking system ABS
ABS prevents the wheels from locking
during braking. Speed sensors continuously monitor the speed of each wheel.
If ABS detects that a wheel is at risk of
locking up, the brake pressure is reduced.
When the danger of locking has been
averted, the pressure is increased again.
ABS helps the driver to maintain steering control of the van, even during emergency braking.
All-wheel drive
The permanent all-wheel-drive variants
of the Vario deliver enhanced pulling
power and traction on difficult terrain.
A selectable off-road ratio ensures greater tractive power on rough ground.
To further improve traction, both the
differential in the transfer case and the
rear axle differential can be locked.
Differential lock
The differential lock ensures that the
wheels of a driven axle turn at the same
speed. This prevents individual wheels
from spinning, which improves traction
and enhances safety, particularly on
uneven or slippery surfaces, when pulling away on a gradient or on rough
terrain.
Driver’s front airbag
To round off the safety equipment, a front
airbag is available for the Vario’s driver’s seat. It enhances driver safety, acting
in partnership with the seat belt as an
additional retention system.

Note: Airbags in no way diminish
the need for occupants to fasten their
seat belts correctly at all times.
Load restraint
Due to the dynamic forces which occur
when transporting goods, an unsecured
load can start moving uncontrollably
due to slipping, tilting or rolling, thus
increasing the risk of accident and injury.
With their load-restraint systems and
wide range of optional extras, MercedesBenz vans provide professional loadsecuring solutions. The Vario includes
a range of different bulkhead variants
and load-securing rings.
(Top left and centre diagrams)
Load restraint is primarily achieved by placing loads
against the front or rear bulkheads and the sides
of the vehicles, and then filling any gaps. It is also
possible to use aids such as braces, bars, partition
nets or cargo barriers (direct load restraint)
(Top right diagram)
Loads can be tied down to the floor using lashings.
This increases friction between load and floor,
preventing slippage (indirect load restraint)
Safety steering column
The safety steering column, installed in
the Vario in conjunction with the driver’s
front airbag, helps to reduce movement
of the steering column in the event of a
frontal collision. The aim is to minimise
the risk of injury for the Vario driver in
a frontal collision. The various joints and
telescopic sections allow the safety steering column to yield in a frontal collision.
In this way the movement of the steering wheel is largely decoupled from the
deformation of the front-end structure
of the vehicle.
Three-point seat belts with
belt tensioners
Correctly worn three-point seat belts
restrain vehicle occupants in their seats
in the event of a frontal collision. The
system can be extended with a pyrotechnic seat belt pre-tensioner, which is
available in conjunction with the driver’s
front airbag. If the seat belt pre-tensioner
is activated via the airbag control
unit, it tautens the seat belt in fractions
of a second. This means that the occupant takes part in the collision-induced
vehicle deceleration in longitudinal
direction at an early stage and as a result
is subjected to a lower dynamic load.
It can also reduce forward displacement
of the occupant, so the danger of the head
and body contacting the steering wheel
and/or interior components is reduced.
If the driver’s front airbag (special equipment) is selected, the driver’s seat is
fitted with the seat belt pre-tensioner as
standard.
Note: Never drive without your
seat belt!
