Our individual households also need a plan for “homeland security” if we are to keep others from endangering our children. But in a world of easy access to harmful outside forces, how do we do that? Here are some
suggestions for household security:
Take charge of the media. Instead of allowing makers
of TV programs, movies, and CDs to dictate what you
watch and hear, use biblical guidelines to evaluate the
language and morality of what your children see and
what they listen to.
Check out their friends. The standards of your children’s friends may not match yours. Make your home
a haven where their friends are welcome. It’ll help you
get to know them.
Build shields. By teaching your children biblical principles and encouraging their faith, you’ll help them to be
discerning and to build inner shields that will protect
them from the dangers they face.

•Preheat oven to 4000. Arrange 3-4 cups (1 quart)
of fresh fruit peaches in a greased 8-1/2”x9” baking
dish. Mix together 1 C. sugar, 1 tsp. lemon juice, 1/4
tsp. almond extract and sprinkle over fruit, place in
hot oven while you prepare the topping.
•Topping: Sift together dry ingredients, cut in shortening, add all liquid at once. Stir until flour is moistened. Remove fruit from oven, spoon dough over the
hot fruit, spreading it lightly with the back of spoon.
Sprinkle with sugar. Bake about 30 minutes or until
golden brown.

What’s going on? Hunters and wildlife watchers have
always been curious about what really takes place in
the woods when they’re not there. Realistically, no
one can be physically present 24/7/365 to observe
wildlife as they go about their diurnal, crepuscular,
and nocturnal movements in their native habitat.
However, that all changed in the past 25 years with
the invention and proliferation of trail cameras. Now,
candid photographs and videos can remotely capture
the secretive lives of the many wildlife species that
inhabit Penn’s Woods.
Like many other outdoorsmen, women, and youths,
I eagerly look forward to my weekly trips to the
woods to exchange memory cards in my trail cameras. The anticipation builds when the digital readout
registers multiple photographs have been captured
and I eagerly look forward to getting home in order to
go through the images on my computer. Some newer
trail cameras have USB ports to connect a hand-held
viewer in the field, other models have small screens
for viewing the photographs or videos right there,
while the most advanced trail cameras wirelessly text
or e-mail images directly to the owner’s computer
or smartphone. My current trail cameras aren’t that
technologically advanced at this point, but I may consider upgrading in the future. The only things holding
me back are the substantial cost and the increased
potential of having high-end models stolen from out
of the woods by an unscrupulous individual.
Over this past Summer, my ongoing trail camera
efforts in Lawrence County have rewarded me with
dozens of day and night photos of white-tailed deer
(bucks, does, and fawns), wild turkey, raccoons,
groundhogs, squirrels, and what might surprise some
individuals, numerous coyotes. Like most models, my
trail cameras include a date/time stamp on each image, so I know exactly when that particular animal
was digitally caught moving through my set-up sites.
(I’m eagerly looking forward to capturing a Lawrence
County black bear or bobcat on one of my trail cameras, and as an eternal optimist, I believe it’s only a
matter of time before I add those images to my trail
camera digital wildlife photography collection.) While
walking to one of my trail camera locations back in
July, I had the good fortune of observing my first Lawrence County buck with a clearly defined drop tine
coming down off his main beam. We watched each
other at about 35 yards for approximately 30 seconds
and let’s just say his antlers, still in velvet, were ample. I’m hoping I eventually pick him up on my trail
cameras to document his existence.
Recently on August 26, my one trail camera caught a
young buck walking past at about 20 feet in the dark.
Probably his first time being photographed, the trail
camera hanging on the tree apparently caught his attention and his curiosity got the best of him. The next
image, taken one minute later, captures the symmetrical 6-point, clearly in bulbous velvet, staring directly
in the lens at 5 feet for the perfect “mug-shot”. One of
the things that intrigues me about trail camera photographs is their exceptional clarity and high definition
enabling you to readily identify individual animals by
their unique markings, coloration, and features. Much
to my delight, the same trail camera caught another
digital photograph of the exact same young 6-point
buck on Sept. 3; but things had changed significantly.
Only 8 days later, his antlers are ivory-colored and
hardened, and only a few shreds of velvet are visible
on the upper tines of his right antler. The process and
stages of white-tailed bucks growing, carrying, and
shedding their antlers on an annual basis has always
fascinated me. Next week, we’ll take a closer look at
antlers and what makes those very unique cranial
appendages so special for white-tailed deer and so
highly desired by hunters who passionately pursue

Tips for Fall Scrapbooking:
• Try using as many 2 page
layouts (spread) as possible.
Spreads have a tendency to
be a bit more forgiving than a
single page layout. They also
allow a story to unfold more
because you have more space to work with.
You can get 6-8 pictures of playing in the
leaves in comparison to just 3 or 4.
• Don’t stress over titles. Try a digital or use
chipboard or alphabet stickers. Computers
are your friend and work great for titles and
journaling.
• Photos: Remember to take landscape and
portrait orientation photos. Also remember
to take big picture shots but also detail shots.
Maybe your son is dressed as Buzz Lightyear.
Get an up close detail shot of Buzz’s name tag
on the costume to use as a subtitle on your
page. Other detail shots can add extra embellishments to your layouts as well. Also, for
events, try making a list ahead of time of the
different photos you would like to take so you
don’t miss anything.
• Don’t have a lot of time to scrapbook? Since
it’s Fall, try using just a standard kraft paper
as your background and forget the patterned
papers. You can also print your photos with
a white border around them at most stores.
This adds your matting and will help make
your photos pop against the kraft paper.
• And as always: Use what you like, not what
is “in”. If you like what you are using you will
invest yourself into the project more.
