Join us for a meditative 30 minute service at 7 p.m. to
receive the imposition of ashes. In the ritual of Ash
Wednesday, which begins the Lenten journey through the
desert, we receive a cross-shaped smudge on our forehead.
The ashen sign reminds us that we are dust, and to dust we
will return. We begin this desert journey marked with
ashes, the sign of our mortality. In remembering that we
will die, we are called to remember God who is the source
of our life. The season of Lent invites us into wilderness
places where we remember what is most essential to us. If
you aren’t able to make it for the evening service, Pastor
Cathy will be available from 12:00 until 2:00 p.m.

Our March Melodies of Compassion will be donated to
Habitat for Humanity - Seattle/King County. The
vision of all Habitat for Humanity organizations around
the world is “a world where everyone has a decent
place to live.” Habitat for Humanity’s role in realizing
that vision is expressed in its mission: “Seeking to put
God’s love into action, Habitat for Humanity brings
people together to build homes, communities, and
hope.” Habitat for Humanity Seattle-King County has
built over 300 homes for low-income families living in
King County, as well as participating in renovations
and critical repair of homes. Please think of how
important your home is to you and be generous with
your coins and other gifts to Melodies throughout
March.

Andrea’s 9 students from Saudi Arabia—Omar Al-Ali, Anas

Lenten Enrichment Hours
Sundays, March 9th and 30th and April 6

Led by Tom Trzyna
Enrichment Hours are times for you to enrich your fellow
members with your thoughts and experiences related to important
Christian topics. We will continue a pattern of very little talk by
leaders and a lot of wisdom from you.
Our topic for Lent will be forgiveness. The Jewish
philosopher Hannah Arendt wrote that forgiving is one of the two
most important ideas in human history, and she claimed that idea
was invented by Jesus of Nazareth. Without forgiveness, Arendt
wrote, we have no way at all of transcending the errors of the
past. Forgiving is certainly a distinctive notion that separates
Christianity from other world religions.
Yet what does forgiving mean? What does it involve? Jesus
tells us to forgive our enemies; often the church has led us to look
for forgiveness from God. As a practical matter, is forgiving
something you do, or is it a process that you experience? Is it safe
to forgive? Have you ever been ‘forgiven’ by someone who used
forgiveness like a club to induce guilt? Can you forgive
yourself? Are there even times when you feel like you need to
forgive God?
Come to the Fireside Room at 11:30, after a cup of coffee, on
March 9 and 30, and April 6 for a continuing conversation about
an idea that lies at the heart of our faith.

Thank you to Mary’s Place Volunteers
(all 60 of you!)
Sand Point CUMC has just completed our most recent
opportunity to host 6 moms and 6 children (ages 9 months to 15
years) from Mary’s Place for a week.
In addition to providing transportation, hospitality and meals,
volunteers also stayed overnight. Special thanks go to our coordinators: Sylvia Abbott, Joan Bohn and Tony Russo. Next we
