Most parents in our organization remember vividly how and when they first learned that
their baby was diagnosed with Down syndrome. The first days, weeks, and months can
be filled with so many emotions and so many questions about what to expect with their
baby.
We certainly don’t have all the answers, but meeting and talking with other parents who
have children with Down syndrome has proven to be a valuable source of information
and comfort. This is the primary goal of our New Parent Support Network and, as babies
develop, we hope that this early support helps parents beat some of the hurdles in the
first few months.
Education
The purpose of these baskets is to show support to the parents of the baby
and their families. Often, families are unaware of what Down syndrome
implies or how to approach it. The baskets are delivered by mothers of
children with Down syndrome that can enlighten the path for the new parents.
Baskets are delivered at the hospital within the first week of the baby’s birth
and each visit to the new parents are also accompanied with words of hope,
encouragement and support. At this time, we also welcome the new families
to DSAH and teach them about our programs and services.
