Leaders will collect you at 8 am from your hotel in Portland
for the 1:15 minute transfer to Boothbay and the start of some
great cycling. We will begin by cycling Linekin Neck for some
wonderful ocean views including lighthouses and Boothbay
Harbor. Our ride continues along country roads and on to the
town of Damariscotta. One of our favorite little Maine towns,
Damariscotta features a charming main street right on the
water and some great lunch options. You are on your own for
lunch and free to explore the town before we continue cycling
around a lake and onto the Pemaquid Peninsula. After cycling
we gather at the Pemaquid Point Lighthouse to watch the ocean
pound the coast and to enjoy a wine and cheese reception.
Tonight we enjoy dinner at the elegant Bradley Inn.

DAY 2
Pemaquid to Clark Island Route
63 miles
Meals
breakfast and dinner
Our day starts with a short ride to the colonial Pemaquid
historic site. Easily identifiable from the water, Pemaquid was
highly contested during the French and Indian wars and was
the economic hub of New England before Boston rose to
prominence. From here we cycle through a seaside summer
community and up the peninsula to the town of Waldoboro
where we stop for lunch. After lunch we cycle to the Olsen
House, featured in Andrew Wyeth’s “Christina’s World” and out
the St George Peninsula to Clark Island. Upon arrival, sit on the
porch overlooking the ocean or stroll onto the island to swim in
the quarry over looking the ocean. Tonight we offer the choice
between dinner at the inn or a short ride to eat lobster on an
ocean front wharf.

DAY 4
Clark Island to Camden
Camden to Castine
Clark Island to Camden Route 3
0, 54, or 100 miles
Sunset Sail aboard the Schooner Olad 2 hours
Meals breakfast, lunch, and dinner
Camden to Castine Route 53 or 63 miles
Meals breakfast, lunch, and dinner
We start our day heading south on the St George Peninsula
towards the town of Port Clyde. In Port Clyde we stop to explore
the great little general store and to bask in the sun on the
town pier and enjoy one of Maine’s most picturesque harbors.
From Port Clyde it is a quick spin over to the Marshall Point
Lighthouse. Leaving Marshall Point we spin back up towards last
night’s inn with the blue ocean and pine covered islands as the
backdrop. We stop at the Keag Store for lunch, a great spot for
a lobster roll both because they are yummy and because you
might end up sitting next to the lobster man who caught your
lunch - something that would never happen at the overhyped
places that the tourists’ guides feature. After lunch a cornucopia
of discovery awaits. First stop, Birch Point State Park to explore
the rocks and shore, then it is off to the Owls Head Light, my
favorite lighthouse in Maine. From Owls Head it is a quick
spin into the town of Rockland, home of some great galleries,
the lighthouse museum, the Farnsworth Museum of Art, Project
Puffin, and the Island Institute. From Rockland it is a quick 10
miles through lush countryside to the town of Camden. Once we
settle into the inn we will meet my good friend Aaron Lincoln,
owner and captain of the Schooner Olad, and join him on an
evening sail on Penobscot Bay. A natural story teller, Aaron
will share stories from his sailing life, while the guides serve a
gourmet picnic and the sun sets over the Camden Hills.
Optional: Journey to the Observation Deck of the Penobscot
Narrows Bridge
Today is good chance to get your heart rate up as we pedal
past Lake Megunticook and up into the Camden Hills. Our
ride through the hills drops us back to the coast near the quirky
gingerbread community of Bay Side and into the town of Belfast.
Take some time to explore the galleries, shops, and pretty harbor
before settling in for lunch. After lunch we have a short van
shuttle to Bucksport and the original Fort Knox. This Fort Knox,
and the more famous one, were named after the Revolutionary
War hero General Henry Knox, whose house you pedaled by
on day 3. Built in the 1800’s, Fort Knox never saw battle but its
size stands as a monument to the strategic importance of Maine
to the fledging United States of America. Take some time to
explore the fort or ride the elevator to the top of the bridge for
panoramic views of the Maine Coast before hopping back on
your bike and pedaling onto the town of Castine.
DAY 5
Castine to Blue Hill
Castine to Blue Hill Route Longer Option Van Transfer to Bar Harbor Meals 40, 61, or 75 miles

One of the oldest towns in North America, Castine predates
Plymouth, Massachusetts by 6 years. It was founded by the
French, so American history dismisses it. Our morning ride
through Castine is a ride through Pre Colonial North American
History. Fought over by 4 nations, Castine’s every block offers a
narrative of the struggle for dominance in a new and uncharted
world. Once through Castine our ride follows the backroads of
the Blue Hill Peninsula. One of my favorite rides in all of Maine,
today’s ride rolls through farmland, coastal villages, and along
pristine coastline. We pause to watch the ocean’s power at the
Blue Hill Reversing Falls before pedaling into the town of Blue
Hill. From here we cycle out the Newbury Neck, a wonderful 8
mile spit of land right along Blue Hill Bay. We have about a 45
minute van shuttle to Bar Harbor, our home for the next 2 nights.
Tonight you have a free night to explore Bar Harbor.

breakfast and dinner
We start our day riding through Acadia National Park before
dropping out of the Park at Seal Cove. Our ride carries us
through the town of Northeast Harbor and along Sergeant
Drive, one of the moneyed enclaves of Mount Desert Island and
along the shore of Somes Sound. Next we cycle into Southwest
Harbor were we pause for lunch and exploration before cycling
along the ocean and to the Bass Harbor Light to enjoy views of
the Cranberry Islands. We skirt the perimeter of Mount Desert
Island and pedal our way back to Bar Harbor. Tonight we enjoy
a final dinner together at a celebrated local restaurant.

3.5 hours
breakfast
Optional: Ride to Summit of Cadillac Mountain 7 miles
We celebrate a great week of cycling with a ride along the
Park Loop Road of Acadia National Park and optional climb
to the Summit of Cadillac Mountain, the highest point on the
Eastern Seaboard between Maine and Rio de Janeiro. The 3.5
mile climb offers stunning views of Blue Hill Bay, Bar Harbor,
and Frenchman Bay. At the summit we enjoy the best blueberry
muffins on the planet and savor a week of great cycling. Zip
up and hold on - from here we have a 5-mile “almost all down
hill” ride back to Bar Harbor. You have time to change and to
explore before a noon departure back to Portland. Guides will
drop you at the airport or your local lodging around 4:00 pm.

Weather
Whether to Pack that Extra Layer
Summer in Maine may be short-lived, but the weather
makes it worth living. Days along the coast are usually
pleasant with temperatures averaging in the 70s. The
evenings are cooler and comfortable. Along with the
autumn colors come crisp mornings, and temperatures that
drop with the sun. Dress in layers so that you can find that
perfect combination of clothes to keep warm. Coastal fog
is beautiful but carries with it cooler air than what you’d
experience inland. Our trips run rain or shine. Refunds
cannot be offered for any weather-based events, so please
plan accordingly. Each guest has the freedom to choose
whether he or she wishes to cycle based on the weather.
For cycling, comfortable, athletic-oriented clothing is best.
All guests must wear a helmet while cycling. Feel free
to use one of ours or to bring your own. Experience has
shown a good pair of cycling shorts can greatly improve
the quality of your overall experience. We recommend
clothing that you can layer. Generally, a base layer of
a t-shirt, along with a layer for warmth such as a fleece
or sweatshirt, and an outer layer with wind, and waterresistant or water-proof capabilities are recommended.
Casual attire is appropriate for dinner.
