The World at Your Fingertips by Trenton Murdock Smart devices are everything and we want more of it. With all our smart devices, we probably want a universal controller that will allow us to interact with the devices without taking them out. For example, the television remote has been a great accessory to our televisions and we have long been accustomed to it ever since. As of now, technology businesses believe that wearable technology is the next big thing. Apple completely shook our world with the announcement of the iPhone in 2007, and now it’s a live or die race to see who can shake the world with the next best technology whether that be wearable or something out of this world. Fin, created by RHL Vision, announced a device that connects to all smart devices through bluetooth. The device slips on your finger like a ring and has a wonderful outer body that looks good enough to wear in public. It controls your smart products using an optical sensor to track your movements. Fin then sends the command to your connected device via bluetooth. The ring is set to gestures that allow to send specific commands to selected devices. In the future, I hope that they will have a control center that you can download to your phone or computer and set custom gestures to the device that you can easily remember. Some simple gestures for the ring are moving your thumb down and up your index finger to control the volume. To skip songs, you swipe your thumb across the palm of your opposite hand. In the near future, they hope to add biometrics to have your fingers act as if they were buttons. The device will not only be used by the everyday consumer, but RHL Vision plans to have Fin used by people with disabilities, specifically blind people. They want people with disabilities to be able to interact with technology smoother and they also plan to reduce the price to around 60 dollars for those people with disabilities. Technology is amazing and we use it everyday and for everything. It’s nice to see Scan to see the that companies continue to make our lives easier with technology. They not only pay SJHS website attention to the normal, everyday consumer in the United States, but they focus on and the back everyone in the world to help show people the power and control that these devices issues of the provide. Sentinel and Learn more: http://goo.gl/s45wUA Years of War Police Snipers by Amy Compton Police snipers are trained only to shoot as a last resort when a direct threat to life is being made. They often times operate closer to the target than military snipers, at 100 yards or even 50 yards. Some snipers begin with military assistance or even rely on specialized SWAT team snipers. Police snipers will even go so far as to supervise public events that could lead to a dangerous hostage situation. An example of police sniper techniques is starting on Friday May 7th, 2010, local police snipers in Pittsburg, California had no choice but to shoot a twenty year old man in the midst of a hostage situation that lasted over 30 hours. This man held his 48-year-old mother at gunpoint while she was on her knees in front of him. Two snipers both placed shots, ending the 30 hour situation. The suspect’s name was not released but it was stated that he was suspected to be part of a gang who took part in a robbery in 2009. This man was said to have mental illnesses and was wanted for violating his probation. He managed to barricade himself into an apartment and threatened to shoot himself, his mother, and any cops who tried to enter. SWAT teams surrounded the apartment complex and managed to evacuate the area. The suspenseful but uneventful hostage situation left the mother unharmed, although she was treated at a nearby hospital for exposure to tear gas. The operations and tactics of police snipers differ from the operations and tactics of military snipers. Sharpshooters for the police usually go on short missions and mostly occur in hostage situations. Snipers are occasionally deployed with the SWAT team next to negotiators for close combat quarters. They go by one rule: “Be prepared to take a life to save a life” and accomplish this rule with pride. THE LEGO MOVIE Is The Lego Movie something that is worth watching? Let's find out. The story is about Emmett an ordinary construction worker who goes on a crazy adventure with WyldStyle or Lucy, Virtuvius the wizard, and Batman to save the Lego Universe from Lord Business, an evil businessman who controls everything in the Lego Universe. You might think at first that The Lego Movie was a commercial for LEGO, but it isn't a commercial at all. For the kids, they will love the movie for its characters and the worlds, while the teens, the adults, and maybe even seniors will love the movie for its message, nostalgia with Legos as a kid, and humor that is just non- stop at all times. I think that The Lego Movie was awesome for its beautiful use of CGI and Stop Motion Animation, the characters that will be forever remembered and a story that is genius and nostalgic. This movie has a combination of action, humor, and charm that will make you laugh, feel excited, and will touch you. Retirement Speech in the Year 2070 by Alee Cruz We meet on this beautiful spring day to celebrate the retirement of Alene B. Cruz-Trujillo. Alene has worked for the NYPD for 25 years, she was hired June 3rd, 2022 after leaving the YPD to move to a larger city. As rookie, Alene was instrumental in implementing the 3D goggles that are used today to identify weapons under the clothing of potential criminals. Alene was the head of the task force that introduced these goggles to the airlines and helped to train their employees. Alene was the first officer to use the new GPS system after it underwent some revisions, not only was she able to track the suspect through a wireless feed after shooting the quarter size tracker that sticks to the car, but she was also able to trigger laser cameras to get the image of the driver when they would cross certain check points throughout the city. Alene and her husband Zach raised four kids while she worked fifty plus hours a week. Most recently Alene aided a state patrol design team to come up with the Ultimate Highway Patrol Car. The main car can deploy three drones a flying one and two one wheeled vehicle on each side. During times of high traffic when the officer can't get his car through to keep up with the suspect he can deploy on of his drones that will project data, the license plate, the driver’s licenses and, location of the suspect’s vehicle. The NYPD as well as other agencies will miss the time and dedication that was given by Alene had to improve safety for our officers and citizens. Fanfiction Eight- By Kyla Ray Raven’s P.O.V. the early morning aroused me from my sleep, forcing me to awaken to its bright rays of sunlight and brisk morning air. I had not slept so much in my lifetime, so I was still pretty tired from that. I was sprawled across the roof top of a building near Slade’s headquarters, my cloak covering my body like a soft, thin blanket. After revealing my love to Robin last night, I had escaped in fear of hearing his rejection. Instead of going to Slade, however, I crashed at this building and slept my sadness away. ‘Robin,’ I quietly thought to myself. ‘This will be our last meeting. I will betray Slade and together, we’ll destroy him. Teen Titans Afterwards…’ I couldn’t continue. I knew this day would be coming, I just thought that the reason would be due to my father. I had to leave the Teen Titans for good. Reluctantly, I stood from the hard concrete top of the building and stretched out. After that, I flew towards Slade’s and entered the building. He wasn’t there. I looked around, curious as to where he could’ve gone. “Slade?” I asked, my scratchy voice echoing the large room. There was no reply. “Where could he have gone?” I wondered, a sinking feeling deep in the pit of my stomach. Not knowing where he was made me highly uncomfortable. Robin’s P.O.V. Last night had been crazy. We were encountered by Slade and Raven once again, and of course we fought. This time, however, Slade was holding back. Granted, he was using Raven against us as he hid in his quarters. But I could tell he was up to something. Raven…she had snuck inside of the Titan tower last night too. What she had said though… I sighed heavily, my head throbbing with a slight dull pain as a headache emerged. I didn’t know what to do anymore. I was—no, am, in a relationship with Starfire, and I’m happy with her. But Raven…Raven showed up and told me that she loves me. She Loves Me. It seems impossible, but it makes too much sense. ‘Raven, I need to talk to you.’ I thought, as if quietly whispering her that to bring her to me. Just then, the Titan alarm went off throughout the whole tower, summoning us all into the living room. It was Slade on the monitor, with buildings being destroyed by him. “Titans, Go!” I shouted, racing out the door with the titans beside me. In a matter of minutes, we had arrived at the scene where Slade was. Slade turned and faced us, an almost smirk present on his mask. “Hello, Robin. So nice of you four to join me on this lovely day.” “Slade. You’re not going to get away this time.” I stopped and glanced around. “Wait, why are you here? I thought you had Raven doing your dirty work.” “It’s not working out with her. You, my dear Robin, just seem to be getting in the way.” His one eye narrowed evilly. “I shall get rid of you first, and then I can use Raven to take over the rest of the world.” Robin growled at him, glaring down at him cruelly. “I won’t let you, damn it. You will not get away.” “Robin is right, we will take you down!” shouted Starfire, along with Cyborg and Beast Boy standing beside her. Slade smirked and the battle commenced. Raven’s P.O.V. Boom! Crash! Shiver! Boom!! The headquarters shook as explosions occurred in the cities. I was extremely worried now, knowing that it must’ve been Slade. “If Slade is in battle, then his enemies must be…” My eyes widened as I changed out of the uniform, quickly throwing on my original black leotard and blue cloak. Pulling on the hood, I zipped out of the building and high into the air. I had only flown over by the arcade building when Beast Boy flew past me and into a taller building. “Beast Boy!” I shouted, appalled by the strength Slade was presenting. As I turned my attention back onto the fight, I saw the most horrid sight a person could see. My friends were covered in scars and bruises, much of their clothing ripped and tainted with blood. Starfire’s hair was short now, about to her shoulders. Cyborg’s circuits and wires were poking out of his exterior, blood running out of his mouth. Beast Boy was clearly cut up, his blood flowing out in rivers and major bruises on his chest. And Robin… I nearly choked on air as I gazed upon him. His mask was gone, his clothes were barely on him, and his scars were deep. He had blood gushing out of his stomach and head, not to mention a trail down his mouth. He could barely stand, let alone fight Slade. Slade was ruthless! He cackled maliciously as he pummeled Robin to the ground, the others being too weak to fight back. What happened to the Titans?! They aren’t the same without you, a voice uttered from deep within my mind. Aside from Robin, you were one of the key ingredients to holding the group together. They need you, Raven. And you need them. I hated to say it, but that voice was right. They need me, especially now. Anger bubbled up and rushed out of me, my eyes turning a dark red. “Leave my friends ALONE!!!” I screamed, sending forth a great wave of darkness. The dark tendrils that emerged from me wrapped around a now shocked and somewhat terrified Slade. The tendrils tightened around him, threatening to split him into pieces like a vase fallen to the harsh ground. The raven from deep within me was released, and the two of us acted as one and destroyed Slade. By the time I cooled down, the only thing left of Slade was his scarred mask. I sighed heavily and hurried over to Robin, lifting his head into my lap. “Robin,” I quietly said. His eyes were now closed, and his scarred chest heaved in shallow breaths. Remembering a spell taught to me by the monks of Azarath, I placed a hand on Robin’s chest and closed my eyes, beginning the chant. Within a matter of minutes, Robin’s breathing had become a bit longer and deeper, signaling that he was getting better. “Rae…Raven…” he whispered, slowly opening his eyes. Deep, golden orbs gazed up at me in surprise. “Hey, Boy Wonder. I was beginning to wonder if you’d ever wake up.” I smiled softly down at him, stroking back a strand of his hair that had lingered upon his face. Robin smiled and spoke, “I’m glad it’s you…where’s Slade?” “I’ll explain back at the tower. First, we need to get you and the others to the closest hospital.” “I’m fine.” Robin struggled in sitting up, his injured arms failing him. “No, you need a hospital. I’ll call.” 10 Things About Running By Alysha Emerson 1. On August 16, 2009 Usain Bolt set the men's record for the fastest 100 meter time at 9.58 seconds. 2. But the dynamic duo did not immediately succeed. In fact, they had tons of problems that they had to work through to make their flying machine. Orville was born on August 19, 1871 in Dayton, Ohio. His brother, Wilbur, was born April 16, 1867 in Millville, Indiana. They were the sons of Milton Wright, a bishop of the United Brethren in Christ. The brothers were inseparable, because their personalities were perfectly complementary (Each provided what the other lacked). Orville was full of ideas, whereas Wilbur was mature in his judgments, and more likely to see things through. In high school, Wilbur wanted to go to Yale, but a facial injury while playing hockey prevented his education, so he continued his education by reading through his father's large collection of books. The boys helped their father during their early years, editing a journal called the Religious Telescope. Later, they started their own paper, Westside News. in 1892, the brothers opened the Wright Cycle Shop in Dayton. One of the great glider pilots of the late nineteenth century, Otto Lilienthal, had attracted the attention of the Wright brothers since 1891. Only when the Otto died in 1896 did the two become interested in gliding experiments. They then decided to educate themselves in the theory of flying. The Wright brothers took on the challenge of flight at a favorable time. The basics of aerodynamics were already known, a collection of experimental data existed, and, most importantly, the recent development of the combustion engine made it a good source of power for manned flight. They started by mastering all the important information on the subject of flying. They made their own gliders and tested them, and, when the data they inherited was inaccurate or wrong, they made more thorough experiments. one of the theories they had was that a better way to control a plane was to move the wings (A wrong theory, of course, but they were on their way!). After years of testing, the duo decided to proceed in their experiments by flying double-winged kites and gliders to further test their findings. After talking to the U.S. Weather Bureau, they chose a remote area by the town of Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, to fly their creations. In September 1900, they set up camp there. Their very first device failed because it had insufficient lift. Instead, they flew it as a free glider. Returning to Dayton in 1901, they build the very first wind tunnel in the United States. The brothers tested over two hundred flying machines to see the kind of wind and drag they had, then use that data to make better gliders. By this time, the Wrights not only mastered the existing body of aerodynamics, but also added to it! They build their third glider, incorporating their findings, and in the Fall of 1902, the returned to Kitty Hawk. they confirmed their previous data. After learning how to build and control an adequate air frame, now they had to tackle the real challenge; powered flight. Orville and Wilbur soon discovered, however, that no manufacturer would build a engine that met their specifications. Instead of giving up, they built the engine themselves. When it was installed in the air frame, the whole machine weighed only over 750 pounds and was capable of traveling over 31 miles an hour. On December 17, they made the world's first manned, powered flight in a heavier-than-air craft. Even though the first flight only lasted twelve seconds, they were encouraged that they had made major progress in the flight to the skies! That same day, however, with Wilber at the controls, the next flight lasted 59 seconds! Sadly, a gust of wind damaged the aircraft, and they had to go back to Dayton to build a new machine. On May 22, 1906, they received a patent for the flying machine. As you can see, the Wright brothers did have some problems on the way to the skies, but they kept at it, and look what happened! Now, thanks to them, we can go across the United States in only hours! So see what you can do when you have a dream! Dear Ashley, Why is it that some days I feel so overwhelmed that I could cry at any minute? I completely understand what you’re talking about. There are some days where I feel so down or stressed that my eyes become teary. Being a junior, involved in school activities and having a job after school causes me a lot of anxiety. I don’t like when I feel that I don’t have enough time for homework, family/friends and working out. What I try to do is take a little break, some time to myself and do something that will make me happy again. It’s so hard to get rid of that anxiety but it’s possible. I hope that you figure out what’s best for you because that’s what’s important. Maybe you could talk with someone or watch a favorite episode of a TV program. You don’t want this anxiety to change you because it can get out of hand if you let it control you. Sleep By Alysha Emerson Everyone knows that our body must have energy to function at our full potential in school, sports, and life in general. Although, many teens are known for not getting enough sleep, which results in no energy the way teens bodies function is the reason that they have a harder time falling asleep. In our brains we start to secrete a hormone called melatonin later in the day, and that hormone is what makes us tired, but teens don't start producing melatonin until later in the night. Another reason that they often don't get enough sleep is because of their schedules. Its tough when you go from school to sports then to come home and eat dinner while doing homework because sometimes its 11pm or later. So if that kid went to bed by 11:30m and had to wake up for school at 6 they would only be getting 7 & ½ hours of sleep, which isn’t enough. When we don't get enough sleep a lot can go wrong. We don't feel at our best, so we can get very moody, we can't pay attention, and we can't perform our best. It is proven that teens who get less sleep have lower grades than those who get a full nights rest. Another problem for teens is not performing well in sports, they can't focus as well and won't be working at their best ability. There were even a handful of people who admit to driving while being tired, this is a very extreme danger to everyone around them on the road, and its proven that people under 25 are more likely to get in wrecks due to being sleepy. Not everyone can always sleep as long as we need to, but there are ways to help get more z’s in. One is to try and go to bed around the same time each day. One tip for teens who get up early for school is to try and wake up around the same time each morning. Another way to help fall asleep earlier is to exercise during the afternoon, our bodies will feel tired after a long day and this can help you fall asleep easier. If you try to avoid caffeine and stimulants after around 4pm then you will be able to fall asleep faster and sleep sounder. If you are a person who watches T.V before bed then try and stay away from the horror movies and action packed T.V shows because they can get your mind thinking about hundreds of different things, making it harder to fall asleep. Another tip that really applies to our society is lighting. So many people have smartphones, tablets, TVs, computers, and plenty of devices that put off a lot of light and the bright lights stimulate our brains and make us think “its morning… time to go!”. So if you turn down the lights and relax you will be able to go to bed easier. Try not taking lots of long naps during the day because your body will stay up longer. Alot of teens also stay up until 2 and 3 in the morning trying to finish homework or study for that big test coming up, but this will make you do worse in your classes since you're not getting an adequate amount of sleep. One last thing would be to go to bed in a dark room that isn't too hot, and when you wake up turn on the lights because they tell our brain to get going. http://kidshealth.org/teen/food_fitness/wellbeing/how_much_sleep.html Movie Review by McKenna Kupp The movie The Book Thief was originally a book written by Markus Zusak. I haven't read the book myself, but from listening to other people, I suspect that it’s just as good, maybe better than the movie. The movie takes place in Nazi, Germany during World War ll. It begins on a train with a nine year old girl named Liesel, played by Sophie Nelisse, and her mother and brother. Come to find out, Leisel is on her way to live with her new family, the Hubermann’s. Unfortunately on the way her brother dies for an unknown reason. When Liesel arrives at the Hubermann house she is shown to her room, a small bedroom with two beds (one for her and one meant for her brother). As the story goes on you find that Liesel has an interest for books, although she doesn’t know how to read them. Her new Papa finds out and begins to teach her to read. Through books, Leisel touches the lives of many others. The cast does a wonderful job portraying their characters. Liesel’s adoptive parents are played by Geoffrey Rush, and Emily Watson, and Ben Schnetzer plays the Jewish boy they hide. You really get an understanding for the lives of the German people who didn’t agree with Hitler’s beliefs and how he treated others. They were trapped by fear and the horrors of war, but continued to show kindness and help others in need. Over all, I loved the movie, and there is much more to the story than described above. If you want to find out more you should go and see it, or even better read the book. I definitely recommend it to anyone who likes dramas and historical fiction. Native American Story By Maggie Rees As the sun rose over the peaks onto the camp of the Chinook, the sun portrayed an array of colors, an image that was unforgettable. The young girl was sitting outside her home teepe where she had spent all her life watching this mesmerizing sunrise with awe of the natural beauty if brought when she was startled by the ear-piercing cry of the bambino wanting to feed inside the tepee, the place she fled to see just a sliver of freedom. Shania sighed in disgust knowing that this meant another day of hard work and labor that was quickly approaching. Sitting down to a quiet meal of cold, chewy deer meat and berries, I picked at my food groggily and sighed grumpily accepting there was nothing else to eat but the chewy deer and berries. “Today, us men are going into the woods to hunt for squirrels and deer and between hunts, we’ll look for more herbs and berries.” Papa said.,“We’ll also look for fish in the rivers surrounding the outer camp.” “Yes, I need more herbs for medicine,” answered my mother meekly. My father has always been forceful. very strong-willed and demands respect from our family. My mother is just another traditional Native American who cooks all the time and makes medicine. She and my father always nag me on being a lady and taking more responsibility, but I don’t like to listen. I pay for it in whips. After breakfast, the men, and my big brother headed off to hunt and look for berries and herbs while my mother and I stayed in the tepee to tend to the wounded. My mother and I held a spot in camp tor the wounded to take care of because she knows how to use herbs and homemade medicines to help those in need. I’m forced to help now because I’m eleven, and would rather not cook, which is too complicated anyway. I pulled up my hemp leggings, used for minimal warmth, and wrapped my bark apron around me in order to keep the blood off my poncho, which is sewed poorly. I can’t sew, and I didn’t have extra material from the animals, so I tried to make the best of it. My mother was busy warming up the baby trying to soothe him when a victim left to a bucking horse was carried in by a few of the women of the camp into our crowded tepee. I rushed to his aid quickly while my mother jumped up, baby on her back grabbing the pebble tool to quickly crush any available herbs left to soothe the pain and intensity of the gaping wounds. The blood kept pouring out but luckily the herbs we were able to scrape up were enough to save the agonizing patient. My mother ordered me to go to the nearby forest to grab some leaves to soothe pain and I ran off immediately. Now running through the deep forest stomping on leaves and evading branches, I dashed for the tree that contained the vital leaves and scrambled back to camp leaves in hand. So many times I had come here to retreat and be alone. To practice hunting with my father’s bow and arrows, but mostly just to be alone. I’m around enough nuts during the day and I come here just to be alone and to not hear a baby cry or another lecture on being a responsible lady all the time. But now, my responsibilities have taken advantage of my freedom and I have no time to come here anymore. Now later in the day, my mother began preparing the large deer hunted down in the far away mountain woods and roasting the meat over the fire. I was glad to have fresh deer now that it was hunted recently and not about a week ago. I would much rather have that than squirrel because the portions are small and had bad taste. There isn’t much food though, because we have to share it with the rest of our Chinook Tribe. But, it’s the most food I’ve seen us have in a long time. As the sun set behind the peaks of the faraway mountains, my mother and lots of others brought forth the food to the ceremony in the middle of camp. This ceremony was held every once in awhile when we ate the hunted food and danced ‘till our feet fell off. We later would sit around a big fore and listen to the spirits speaking to us in the fire. I’ve never heard them do it, maybe because I’m actually listening, but maybe because they aren’t there in the fire. maybe they’re somewhere else. Like in the sky. I don’t know. I was too busy gnawing on the deer meat while dancing when we were called over to do so. Even if I’m not really listening, I hope whoever these spirits are will understand that I’m good, I’m just different. I don’t think like everybody else. I think the way I want to think. Like me. History of Prescription Drugs By Jace Bair Opiates, originally derived from the opium poppy, have been used for thousands of years for both recreational and medicinal purposes. The most active substance in opium is morphine—named after Morpheus, the Greek god of dreams. Morphine is a very powerful painkiller, but it is also very addictive. Morphine was first extracted from opium in a pure form in the early nineteenth century. It was used widely as a painkiller during the American Civil War, and many soldiers became addicted. Codeine, a less powerful drug that is found in opium but can be synthesized (man-made), was first isolated in 1830 in France by Jean-Pierre Robiquet, to replace raw opium for medical purposes. It is used mainly as a cough remedy. Morphine, the most active substance in opium, is a very powerful painkiller that hooked many US Civil War soldiers. Throughout the early nineteenth century, the recreational use of opium grew and by 1830, the British dependence on the drug reached an all-time high. The British sent warships to the coast of China in 1839 in response to China’s attempt to suppress the opium traffic, beginning the “First Opium War.” In 1874, chemists trying to find a less addictive form of morphine made heroin. But heroin had twice the potency of morphine, and heroin addiction soon became a serious problem. Methadone was first synthesized in 1937 by German scientists Max Bockmühl and Gustav Ehrhart at the IG Farben Company. They were searching for a painkiller that would be easier to use during surgery, with less addiction potential than morphine or heroin. Meanwhile, the illegal opium trade boomed. By 1995, Southeast Asia was producing 2,500 tons annually. New painkillers came on the market with approval from the Food and Drug Administration: Vicodin in 1984, OxyContin in 1995 and Percocet in 1999. Coastal and Plateau Tribes By Katie Piguet The Coastal Tribe was a Native American tribe that lived on the West side of the Cascade Mountains. The Plateau Tribe was a Native American tribe that lived in the East side of the Coastal Mountains. Studying the lifestyles of the Coastal and Plateau Tribes would help people understand the there are other ways in life than the way people live now. The Coastal Tribe lived a better life style than the Plateau Tribe does to Economy, Social Conditions, and Politics. The Coastal Tribe had better Economic Success. Both the Coastal Tribe and the Plateau Tribe fished for some of their food. The Coastal Tribe fished from the ocean year round. The Plateau Tribe fished from rivers like the Columbia River. Living on the plateau meant that you had to take long trips to hunt for animals that immigrated during the winter, while the Coastal Tribes had the ocean to fish from whenever they needed. The Coastal had a better political status because they lived along the coast. That means they could go fishing and their life didn’t really change. The Plateau Tribes had a hard time with the political stuff because they lived on the inland of the plateau; they lived off of hunting and traveling to gather seasonal plants. The Coastal Tribe had better social conditions. This is because they believed in one god and they used spirituality in their everyday life. They also believed that both nonliving and living things gad spirits. The Plateau Tribe believed in a creator who was known as the “Old Chief.” Young boys and girls were expected to go on a vision quest to find their guardian spirits. In conclusion, The Coastal Tribe lived a better lifestyle do to Economy, Social Conditions, and Politics. This is because the Coastal Tribe could fish year round from the ocean; they had more time to create art, and a better political status. STEVE LARGENT We all know Golden Tate, Jermaine Kearse, Doug Baldwin and Percy Harvin as the wellknown wide receivers on the Seattle Seahawks, right? How about Steve Largent? If you said no then if you read this you have a pretty good understanding of why you should have said yes. Steve went to college at the University of Tulsa in Oklahoma. In 1974 he had 884 yard receiving and 14 touchdown catches. Then in 1975 he had 51 catches for 1,000 yards and another 14 touchdown catches, yet despite all that he was not chosen till a fourth round pick in the NFL drafts in 1976 by the Houston Oilers. After four preseason games he was going to be cut but was traded to Seattle instead in 1977 for an eighth round pick. Although he was not extremely fast, he was very sure-handed. Steve is also well known for famous hit on cornerback Mike Harden. It was a game against the Broncos, Brian Blades was in the in zone for the pass when out of nowhere Mike Harden intercepts it and runs it out, then when everyone least expected it Largent game from behind using his left shoulder to knock Harden down cold and as Largent stood over Harden he realized the ball was knocked loose and he recovered it! So it was an almost perfect hit and then a fumble recovery! Not only was Largent an incredible hitter he was a very well-known wide receiver. In his 13 seasons with the seahawks he had a total of 819 receptions and 13,089 receiving yards, and 100 touchdown receptions. Steve was also selected to go to the pro-bowl seven times! He was the first seahawks to earn that honor. Then in 1982 Largent, along with teammate Jim Zorn, both ended their participation with the NFL strike during the third week of the strike. Steve was the first to win the Steve Largent award for his spirit, dedication, and integrity in 1989. When Largent retired he held all major NFL records those include: most receptions in a career (819), most receiving yards in a career (13,089), and most touchdown receptions (100). He also was in the possession of a then-record streak of 177 games with a reception. He still holds the title first receiver in NFL history to get 100 touchdown receptions. Largent was inducted into the pro football hall of fame in 1995. His number 80 retired in 1992. Largent was the first Seahawks with that honor. Largent still remains the greatest receivers of all time. https://www.google.com/search?hl=en&site=imghp&tbm=isch&source=hp&biw=1280&bih=878&q=steve+largent&oq=steve+l&gs_l=img.1.0.0l10.930.5365.0.6504.9.8.1.0.0.0.65.439.8.8.0....0...1ac.1.37.im g..0.9.448.4fYcGGJgmpo Babe Ruth By Mercedes Bacon George Herman Ruth, Jr. (1895-1948), American baseball player, was the sport's greatest celebrity and most enduring legend. He was born on February 6, 1895, in Baltimore, one of eight children of a saloon keeper. Judged as incorrigible at the age of seven, Ruth went the St. Mary's Industrial School for Boys, where he learned baseball from a sympathetic monk. His left-handed pitching brilliance prompted Jack Dunn of the Baltimore Orioles to adopt him in 1914 to secure his release. That same year Dunn sold him to the American League Boston Red Sox. Ruth pitched on championship teams in 1915 and 1916, but his hitting soon marked him as an outfielder. In 1919 his 29 home runs set a new record and heralded a new playing style. Baseball had been dominated by pitching and offense; by 1920 Ruth's long hits inaugurated the "big bang" style. In 1920 Babe Ruth was sold to the New York Yankees for $100,000 and a $350,000 loan. This electrifying event enhanced his popularity. His feats and personality made him a national celebrity. An undisciplined, brawling wastrel, he earned and spent thousands of dollars. By 1930 he was paid $80,000 for a season, and his endorsement income usually exceeded his annual income. Ruth led the Yankees to seven championships, including four World Series titles. He was the game's perennial home run champion, and the 60 he hit in 1927 set a record for the 154-game season (Roger Maris hit 61 home runs in 1961, but on the extended game schedule). His lifetime total of 714 home runs is second only to Hank Aaron's 755. With a .342 lifetime batting average for 22 seasons of play, many rate him the game's greatest player. When his career ended in 1935, Ruth's reputation as being undisciplined frustrated his hopes of becoming a major league manager. In 1946 he became head of the Ford Motor Company's junior baseball program. El Chapo by Javier Zuniga On December 25, 1954, or April 4, 1957 Draft Journey: Jadeveon Clowney By Chase Lee There is a monster in South Carolina. Terrorizing quarter backs, at 6 foot 6 and 274 pounds, he is fast enough to fake out the O-line and strong enough to bull rush them to. He was all American in his sophomore year and now he is predicted to be picked in the first pick of the first round of the NFL draft. Jadeveon Clowney is from a small but happy and rich town called Rock Hill in South Carolina. He’s more remembered for his deadly hit against Michigan. But now he will be remembered for being a top 5 pick in the NFL draft and hopefully player in the big stage also. He will most likely go to a team that was unsuccessful in the 2013. As the teams who have a bad record gets to have one of the first picks in the draft and Clowney will most likely go to one of those teams. In fact, Clowney himself thinks he should be the number one pick in the NFL draft. His college performance was good as anybody can ask for until he reached his junior year, his final year until the big stage. But he made up for it at the NFL combine. A place where scouts at the pro level get a chance to watch the players coming out of college to show what they got ability wise. Emilio Guzman Bustillos and Maria Consuelo Loera Perez gave birth to Joaquin Guzman Loera. Joaquin was born into a very poor family in Sinaloa, as a kid he would sell oranges just so he could eat for the day he dropped out of school when he was in the third grade so he could work with his dad who would beat him regularly, Joaquin would run away to his grandmas just to escape from his dads beatings as he got older he would protect his smaller siblings by standing up to his dad, since there was so little job opportunities in his town he had to pick opium poppy with his dad after every day his dad would sell the harvest and some marijuana to buyers and then would waste it on alcohol and women Joaquin got tired of this soon and planted a marijuana farm at the age of 15 with his cousins. After this his could single handedly support his whole family. Joaquin started to work as a chauffeur for Felix Gallardo before he got in charge of coordinating drug shipments after some time he started to work for Felix directly after this he became very ambitious and regularly told his bosses to allow him to increase the amount of narcotics he smuggled. As drug cartels they were very cold hearted and ruthless like if the drug shipment was not on time he would simply shoot the smuggler in the head that were the way Guzman earned his status and it would be inconvenient to rip him off. Throughout most of the 1970-1980’s all the Mexican drug traffickers were middlemen for the Columbian drug trafficking groups and the Mexican smugglers would simply take it across the Mexican border and It would cost the Columbians a fee for every kilo. After Felix Gallardo got arrested Ramon Arellano Felix took over he was a big threat to Guzman because of the rivalry of the Sinaloa Cartel and the Tijuana Cartel Ramon even tried to kill Guzman by exploding his car Guzman striked back by killing nine members of the Tijuana Cartel all these members were either family members , cartels or lawyers after this the gunmen of Arellano Felix attempted to kill Guzman by doing a drive by, on his house this started a all-out war between the Sinaloa Cartel and the Tijuana Cartel which continued for six months resulting in several deaths most of which were from the Tijuana Cartel but luckily for Guzman and Ramon they were not assassinated. After all the massacre Guzman Fled to Guatemala using a fake Passport when he was going to Guatemala he also bribed many officers but one thing he didn’t know is that one officers was a informant for the law enforcement resulting in Guzman’s capture where he was immediately sent to a maximum security prison in the state Mexico. His crime organization still continued as normal and in 2001 he escaped in a garbage truck out of the state of Mexico and also became the second most wanted man in the world behind Osama Binladen and as his drug empire continued he made a fortune Forbes magazine rank him as the 10 richest man in Mexico and the 1,140th in the world he was also public enemy number one in Chicago they also call him “the godfather of the drug world” because of his influence on the criminal network. The whereabouts of Guzman during the manhunt for him were unknown for a long time because he was always moving and hiding, he also had a lot of police and government officials that he bribed that were helping him escape when the police were searching for him on December 20 2005 , the DEA offered 5,000,000 for his capture but it wasn’t until this year 2014 that they finally captured him in a hotel in Mazatlan Sinaloa Mexico. Warriors: The Darkness is Rising by Jessica Cooper and Kayla Vincent Shimmerkit jumped up on top of Pinefrost in greeting. “The gathering is tonight are you going?” asked the female kitten, her olive green eyes wide and pleading. With a grunt the brown and white tom shifted, purposely knocking the kit off his back onto a soft pile of moss. “It depends.” “Hey!” shouted Shimmerkit with a laugh. Riverkit pranced over to Shimmerkit and Pinefrost. “Hi guys! Are you going to come eat? I saved a finch for you, Shimmerkit,” said the male kitten. The two friends ran off to the fresh-kill pile, side by side. Watching the two go the warrior’s jaws parted in a yawn and he rested his head on his paws, watching the kits with an almost amused expression. His moment of peace was again interrupted, however, as a massive toyger tabby stormed over, his emerald green gaze dark with malice. With a paw raised the tabby brought it down hard on Pinefrost’s head, causing the smaller tom to hiss out in pain. “What do you think you’re doing lying about?” demanded the hostile tom, whom Pinefrost could now recognize as Tigerfury, the clan deputy. “I was trying to rest... I just came back from hunting patrol...” “So you didn’t go on border patrol afterwards?” his lip curled inward in scorn. “Get out of camp and start patrolling. If I see even a hair of yours here from now on until Moonhigh, I’ll skin you alive, maggot.” His unfathomable gaze shifted to rest on the two kits, and he approached them, his claws slowly unsheathing. “Did you two contribute to this pile?” he spoke with a slow, dangerous delicacy, his eyes narrowing to slits. “You're not my mother so I’m gonna tell Infernostar! I hate you!” Shimmerkit screamed as she ran out of the camp. Snorting the tom turned with a flick of his tail, speaking to himself with a smug smirk, “Ah, no one wants to be her mother. So it’s good she’s gone- hopefully a fox will make a snack of her! That’s the only way she’d be useful!” Shimmerkit came into the camp terrified, and she shouted. “Leaftail is dead!” “Good riddance,” muttered the tabby deputy. “You know you loved her,” Cadence whispered into Pinefrost’s ear. “She was my sister,” Pinefrost mumbled, “of course I loved her.” “Our sister, dear Pinefrost, was a disgrace to the clan.” The toyger tabby had started to approach his brother, his dark green eyes ice-cold. “She wasn’t a disgrace you piece of fox-dung! Unlike you she actually had a heart!” “I am an alpha kit!” Shimmerkit screamed as she stood on the Bigrock and she looked down at everyone. “Dungkit, get down from there before you hurt yourself.” Tigerfury’s snide tone was directed at Shimmerkit. “NO! I am the almighty Shimmerstar!” Shimmerkit declared. “You’re the almighty waste of space,” retorted the tabby, Beauty and the Beast his lip curled. “Now get down before I ensure you never become by Amy Compton an apprentice.” “Fine but you're mean!” said Shimmerkit. Purposely ignoring her, he headed towards an alley, pausing as he scented the air. Rogues. Just what I need. He set down the body, and stepping inside the dark alley he growled, “Show yourself, scums of the earth!” A nimble grey she-cat shot out from behind a dumpster, ‘How dare you, you mangy clan cat!” “Oh look, a she-cat trying to stand up to a big bad cat like me. You rogues aren’t very smart, are you now?” She sprang at him with a hiss of fury, and he swept her away with a heavy blow to her shoulder. “Oh look, a she-cat that doesn’t know any better.” “Shut up you... you piece of fox-dung!” “Petty insult from a petty she-cat. Do me a favor and rub yourself on that body over there or I’ll kill you.” “No!” Blazinginferno shouted as she grabbed the corpse of Infernostar and attempted to fling it at Tigerfury. With a mocking laugh, Tigerfury watched as she failed to throw the body, and he lunged forward, slamming into the ginger she-cat, his claws digging into her shoulder. “Any last words, traitor?” “No, please, I won’t say anything!” whimpered Blazinginferno. “I can’t trust you.” he sank his teeth into her throat, the sweet, warm blood pumping into his mouth, and he twistedly smiled, enjoying the taste for a short moment. With a single, powerful twist of his head, he tore out her throat and watched as her blood spilled crimson onto the stone ground. TO BE CONTINUED... Peanut Butter and Jelly Taryn Mathews Chapter 3 Huebert had finally calmed down, his hands still covering his eyes. Sirens screeched outside of the old house. The little girl was only a bit relieved. Three paramedics, including the ambulance driver, rushed in to the house. The three medics had nametags. Two were females, the blonde’s name was Kathy, the other lady was African-American, her name was Stephanie. The driver, who was male was a red-head, his name was Drake. Kathy and Stephanie were lifting the mother while Drake rolled in a stretcher. The mother now on the stretcher when Stephanie had asked the little girl what happened to her. “There on the table,” Huebert butted in, “On the table they have it!” The three paramedics all looked at what was before them the old oak table. They all covered their eyes almost at the same time, Kathy gasped. “ She, she-“ Kathy could barely speak, “She’s been infected!” The little girl was even more scared than before, tears started dripping down her cheeks. “I don’t want to take any more chances,” Huebert broke the silence with his stern words,”I didn’t retire for this!” Huebert stood up, still covering his eyes, he marched out the front door. The medics started to roll the stretcher out the door. “Wait! What do I do now? Can I come with my mother?” the little girl spoke up, “You can’t just leave me here.” Kathy looked sadly at the little girl, then back at Kathy and Drake. “I’m sorry,” Kathy looked like she was about to scream from sadness. “What she is trying to say,” Drake cut her off, “You are infected, for the little children like you, you don’t feel any of the side-affects,” you are going to have to stay here.” The little girl was speechless, from what she had just heard. Infected? Side-Affects? These words were rumbled around in her head. She watched the paramedics roll her mother on the stretcher out of the house. After her mother was in the ambulance, Kathy walked in with a pen and a piece of paper. “There isn’t much tome to explain, so I will write it down for you,” Kathy said, without looking at the jars. Kathy was the fastest writer the little girl has ever seen! Kathy told the little girl a simple good luck and rushed to the ambulance. The girl wiped her tears, and read the note. “The two jars hold the contents known as peanut butter and jelly. In the time period of 100 years, humans have evolved, and so have allergies. Allergies can now take effect by just looking with our eyes. Humans have had allergic reactions to peanut butter, but now jelly. You, unfortunately, will be locked up in your house because you have been infected and it is still in your house.” The little girl, struck with fear, ran to the window, she saw cops outside in her lawn. Before she could open her front door, the police men already had planks that nailed it shut. The girl ran to another window where a cop was holding up a plank. Startled, the cop accidently broke the window with the plank from his sudden moving. The plank had flung in a straight line and hit the girl on the head, knocking her into a coma. THE END The Change in Baseball “Jackie Robinson” By Devon Garner Jack Roosevelt Robinson or Jackie Robinson once said “A life is not important accepted the impact it has on other lives.” He impacted on other lives a lot after he was born on 1/31/1919 for instance he was the first African American to play in the MLB. That is only one of the reasons why he is an extraordinary person. Like I said before Jackie was the first African American to play in the MLB. But he didn’t just play he won several awards. Such as the MVP in 1938 for baseball, MVP means most valuable player, and I could see how he won that with a batting avg. of .349 and a fielding avg. of .985. He also is in the hall of fame and he was the rookie of by Amy Compton the year in 1947. What It’s Like To Be Gone Captain James Cook By Tyler Mooney and Chase Yeager Captain James Cook Was a British explorer who has been on three voyages. Cooks first voyage was to go across the Pacific Ocean and observe and record the Transit of Venus across the sun to help navigate. Cook was promoted to lieutenant and was named commander of the expedition. They started the expedition on August 26, 1768 and continued westward across the pacific to arrive at Tahiti on July 13th, 1769 and the result of the observations were not as conclusive as he would have wanted them to be. When Captain Cook returned from his first voyage Cook was promoted from Lieutenant to Commander, in 1772 the Royal society commissioned him to search for the hypothetical Terra Australia, on his first voyage Cook had demonstrated by circumnavigating New Zealand that it was not attached to a larger mass of land to the south. Despite the evidence he had provided, the Royal Society still believed that a massive southern continent should exist. On Cooks return voyage back to New Zealand in 1774 Cook landed on the Friendly Islands, Easter Island, Norfolk Island, New Caledonia, and Vanuatu. Before returning to England, Cook made his final Sweep across the South Atlantic from Cape Horn and surveyed, mapped, and took possession for Britain of South Georgia, which was also explored by Anthony de la Roche in 1675. Cook’s second Everything so messed up Deep in my mind. Yet as I live my life So gone and alone I yearn for winter And wish for the snow. I want a life full of friends With no drama or doubt But I sit at home, Trying to look out As the cars whizz by And my head starts to shake And my everything so worried, It’s beginning to quake. As one step closer Is a step to the end And there’s a cry for help Yet my will won’t bend. And I start to wonder If time is short or long And I begin to remember, What it’s like to be gone. voyage was marked a successful employment of Lacrum Kendall’s K1 copy of John Harrison’s H4 marine chronometer, which would enable Cook to calculate hi longitudinal position, which made greater accuracy. Upon Cook’s return he was promoted to the rank of post-captain. and was given an honorary retirement from the Royal Navy, Cooks fame was extended way beyond the admiralty; Cook was made a fellow of The Royal Society, and was awarded the Copley Gold Medal for completing his second voyage without losing a man to scurvy. Cook could Not resist being away from the sea a third voyage was planned and Cook volunteered to find the Northwest Passage. Cook traveled to the Pacific and hoped to travel east to the Atlantic, while a simultaneous voyage traveled to the opposite route. On his third voyage his attempt was to find the famed the North West passage. Cooks orders were driven by an act of 1745 which was then extended in 1775 to a prize of $20,000 to who claimed to find the North West passage. His rout was to go through the Atlantic to the pacific around the continent. After he got around he went north and ran into the Hawaiian Islands which he named the Sandwich Islands. After he left he went north and then to the east to explore the northwest part of the continent. He ran into a cape in Oregon he decided to name it cape foul weather due to the terrible weather this was causing them to have a hard time traveling northward. What he didn’t know is that he passed through the strait of the Juan de face and soon into the Nootka Sound on Vancouver Island is where he anchored. He stayed there from March 29th to April 26th 1778. Trading there you needed much higher valued items to trade such as metals. When cook returned in 1779 he was greeted with a Makahiki which was a Hawaiian harvest festival showing worship for their god lono. Some of the Hawaiians believed that cook was a reincarnation of their god. They got this from some of cooks crew members. Before landing for the festival cook had to go in a clockwise path around just like their god loco did this allowed preparation for the festival. After cook left the island his attempts of finding the passage led up to his boat getting damaged so he returned to the island for repairs. But what he didn't know was that he was not welcome because the season of the gods just got over. So a dispute and soon a fight broke out. Cook took some of the Hawaiians as prisoners, but he was still mad so he decided to go back and get the king of Hawaii. As he returned he walked grabbed the king with the crew and proceed to the boat. But one of the king’s favorite wives wanted to save him so they chased them. The elder of the Hawaiians was holding a coconut and shouting this is when the king realized that cook was not his friend. As cook was distracted one of the Hawaiians ran up behind cook and struck him on the back of the head and was stabbed to death. All About The Klan By Brooklyn Chase and Jaclyn Brown Terrorizing families by burning crosses on their lawns. Whipping, shooting, or hanging people they were trying to get rid of. These are just a few acts of the atrocious Klux Klan, a native born American racist terrorist organization. During the 20th century, The Ku Klux Klan killed thousands of people and had many involved in their sick crimes. They’ve broken the Fourteenth Amendment a numerous amount of times by using threats, beatings, and even murder. Their primary targets are African Americans, though they also have attacked immigrants, Jews, gays, and those that supported them. The Klan was formed around December 0of 1865 and over the years has seen itself as a Christian organization. After the civil war, the Klan helped overthrow Republican reconstruction governments and eventually established white democratic rule in the south. The fourteenth amendment insured that all citizens of all states not only rights on the federal level but on the state level too “Until the fourteenth amendment constitutional status of bill of rights vis-à-vis that states had rested with the supreme court decision in Barron v. Baltimore (1833), in which Chief John Marshal had ruled that the bill of rights applied only to the federal government”. “It has been said that a right without a remedy is no right at all. It’s important that citizens have a proper way to be asserted both offensively and defensively. The most common defensive use of constitutional rights is by criminal defendants.” People may declare that the constitutional rights rudely, bringing a civil suit against the government or the government officials for a diversity of relief. The Klan could have done anything to prevent their arrest before March. I read “They could have brought a suit have the state law declare unconstitutional and also have the city authorities enjoyed (prohibited by the court order) from enforcing the statute against them.” The Klan is still trying to recruit, they’re trying to erase our fourteenth amendment. As early as 2008 they are sending letters to people asking them to join there Klan(."Tina DeBerry."). As you can see they are criminals. They are going against our fourteenth amendment and trying to populate and make the illegal group bigger. Sydney Opera House By Carmen Nelson Have you ever wondered about the design and structure of the Sydney Opera House? Or how about the history of the design? Well, I can tell you that the roof consists of interlocking “shells” which is on a terraced platform which acts as pedestrian concourses. There is two main halls side by side, they are slightly inclined from each other, the auditoria faces away from the harbour with the stages between the audience and the city. The large open Forecourt is where people ascend the stairs to the podium. The monumental staircase is about 100 metres wide and is the ceremonial staircase, it leads down from the Forecourt. The shell roof was designed by Utzon, each shell is composed of pre-cast rib segments radiating from the concrete pedestal and rising to a ridge beam, the shells are faced in glazed off-white tiles whereas the podium is more earth-toned. The glass walls are a special feature constructed by Utzon’s successor architect, Peter Hall. The history of the design is as controversial as the design. In 1956 the NSW Government had an open-ended international design competition, this meant some of the best design talent in the entire world, there was no design parameter or set cost limit. The requirement was a brief design of the two performance halls, one is for Opera and the other for the symphony concerts. Jorn Utzon’s design won, his entry was repeatedly rescued from a discarded pile of submission. Jorn Utzon was named the sole designer of the Sydney Opera House. There is a room dedicated to Utzon and is called the Utzon room, it is a light filled room that reflects the original concrete ‘beams’. It is the only authentic Utzon designed room at the Sydney Opera House. The room was renamed to the Utzon room in 2004. In 2003 Utzon received the Pritzker Prize, an international architecture’s highest honour. Books vs. Movies By Isabella Weeks Have you ever watched a movie and remember thinking, “The book was so much better!” or when you read a book saying, “The movie was so much more interesting!” There are many book franchises turned in to movies franchises that have been a huge success, like the “Harry Potter” series, the “Twilight” series, the “Hunger Games” series and many, many more. Others have not been as successful. A lot of the time when a book is turned in to a movie, readers who go and see that movie expect it to be exactly like the book. Then when the movies aren’t just like the books sometimes viewer get upset. There is an enormous amount of pressure on the movie makers to live up to the fans expectations. There are also the movies that were better than the books. When a book is really hard to understand and not that interesting, a movie can sometimes make it easier to understand and follow. Many different people can debate for either side, Books or movies, for many different reasons. I asked 8th grade student at Selah Junior High, Alyssa Poeggel about what she likes better, books or movies. Alyssa said, “I like books better because they go into more detail about the character thoughts and feelings which is something a movie just cannot do.” She is just one of many people who enjoy books more than movies. Laura Guillen another 8th grade student at our school who agreed with her “Books tell you more about what happened in the story unlike movies.” Laura said. I personally like books better because while reading a book you can use your imagination and think of each situation your own way. A new popular Young adult book “Divergent” written by Veronica Roth is soon to come out with the first movie. This newly popular trilogy is said to come out with all three books as movies and many people are anticipating a great movie. I am interested to wait and see how people feel about the movie. If they don’t like at all, fans like it the same as the book or they like it more than the book. There are many different opinions, “Books are better than movie,” or “Movies are better than books.” Having different types of resources are very valuable. My Views on Abortion By Carmen Nelson “The greatest destroyer of peace is abortion because if a mother can kill her own child, what is left for me to kill you and you to kill me? There is nothing between.” -Mother Theresa I believe that abortion should not be legal after the second month unless the woman was a victim of rape or incest or her life is in danger. Margaret Carson, a mother who has had an abortion, said “If you abort your child, this child will haunt you the rest of your life because no other child can replace him. Your problems will multiply, not disappear talk to others who have had abortions, who have chosen not to abort, who have found other ways to give life instead of death to their children. Abortion is wrong. Even if you don’t believe that for sure, wouldn’t it be smarter to err on the side of life? Abortion is irreversible- once it’s done, you have no more options.” I believe this because it’s considered murder, it causes psychological damage, it goes against God, and it contradicts laws and oaths. First of all, it’s considered murder. Some people think that life begins at birth, but my opinion is different, when the baby is taken out of the womb then the doctors have to kill it because it is alive, so I believe life begins at the moment of conception. The child is also innocent, they didn’t do anything to deserve to die, they didn’t break any laws so why should you kill an innocent, helpless child. In the Declaration of Independence it states “...certain unalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness.” The child has a fundamental right to life which must be protected. Another reason is that it causes psychological damage. Women who have aborted their child are more likely to commit suicide, 154% more likely. Many women experience depression and are haunted by the baby. Lori Nerad said, “Two weeks after my abortion, I went into labor. I staggered into the bathroom. And there, with my husband beside me, I delivered a part of my baby the doctor had missed. It was the head of my baby…” “I’ll wake up in the middle of the night, thinking I hear a baby crying. And I still have nightmares in which I am forced to watch my baby being ripped apart in front of me. I simply miss my baby. I constantly wake up wanting to nurse my child, wanting to hold my child. And thats something the doctor never told me I would experience.” Carrie Camilleri said, “I was an emotional wreck. The following day I was empty, sad, numb. I knew that day I had made a huge mistake. I wish with all my heart that I would have done things differently.” Also, abortion goes against God. In the ten commandments it says, “Thou shalt not kill.” Jeniece Learned said, “Growing and maturing in a relationship with God has taken the pains from my past sins. Jesus alone is the only healer of our hurts. Going through the grieving process for my child, as you would for anyone you’ve lost to death, is very important. For those that have had multiple abortions, your sin is not worse than my abortion of one. Sin is sin. Ask God for forgiveness and repent. He sees them (sins) no more.” In addition, abortion contradicts laws and oaths. The Hippocratic Oath taken by doctors used to say: “I will not give a woman a pessary to cause an abortion.” Now it has been rewritten by Luis Lasagna in 1964, but still says that the doctor cannot abort a child, “Above all I must not play at God.” Also, as I had stated before, the Declaration of Independence it says that you have an unalienable right to life. Now, I know that some people believe in the right of choice. That’s true, people do have the right of choice. However, there are other alternatives, for example, adoption. The woman should take responsibility for her actions instead of running away from them. If she is looking to avoid pregnancies she should use a contraceptive. Finally, I believe that abortion should not be legal after the second month unless the woman was a victim of rape or incest or her life is in danger. I believe this because it is considered murder, it causes psychological damage, it goes against God, and it contradicts laws and oath. SO, if you consider abortion don’t do it, I think you’ll be happier in the long run. Deer Hunt 2013 By Lane Berry This year, like most years prior, I was going to hunt the Washington modern firearm season for deer. The only thing was that due to my Dad’s new job with Holtzinger Fruit he wouldn't be able to hunt with me. I did have family at deer camp with me though. In the two 5th wheels, my grandma and grandpa, 3 of my uncles, my cousin, and me were all waiting Friday in anticipation; we knew tomorrow the hunt would be on. Like I said, my dad wasn’t with us this year, so I made it my goal to hunt and kill a deer all by myself. The first morning we got a later start than I would've like, but I was a guest so I didn't complain. My grandpa dropped me at the spot we had decided on the night before. Almost immediately I was slowed down, 75 yards in I found my Camelbak had a leak and that my pack and sweatshirt was soaked. Dropped it beside the road and continued on. Only five minutes into legal hunting I heard the first gunshots of the day. I called on the radio seeing if it was someone in our hunting party. It wasn't so I continued on. About 10 minutes later I saw my first deer of the day. There were three does trotting across a dirt field a few miles away. After I watched them for a few minutes I turned to see a little buck skylined 125 yards above me. When he finally figured out what I was he started running and I followed trying to see if I could find the 3rd point on him. That buck ended up getting away and I followed a trail farther down into the bottom and had a herd of deer coming toward me with another little buck but he didn't have enough points. By this time I had probably seen 35 deer and about 5 little bucks. I had reached the property line so I walked up to the road to go to another section of our property we had permission on. This is also the property that I shot my first deer on in 2010. When I got there and crossed the fence I looked up onto the hill above me and saw 3 does and the biggest buck I’ve ever seen on this property. Unfortunately this deer was following his does and started at 400 yard and crossed up and over the hill to close to the landowner’s house. So I went into the draw I shot my first deer in. As I walked I kept my eyes peeled for deer on both sides of the draw as that is how I got my first deer. I ended up walking the mile to the very end of the draw I looked up and saw a doe walking around. So as I reached the top of the knoll there were 13 does within 100 yards of me. I let them move out on their own and followed to see if there was a buck I hadn't seen and there was. He ended up 10 or 15 yards away before either of us knew were there. At this time it was pouring rain. So I went back up to my uncle’s truck and some lunch. For the afternoon I went back down to the same draw and set up for the last hour over a water tank the deer had been frequenting. I ended up not seeing any deer because I think all the shooting had spread them out. On day two I ended up spending the day trying to get my uncles big old 3 by 4 out. Me and my uncle headed out with a game cart and were trying to find the deer but ended up over one draw too far and in the landowner’s yard. After taking a break and trying to get a cell or radio signal, we heard a truck pull up the drive. It wasn't the landowner but one of his good buddies who told us that the landowner let them use the 4-wheelers to get their deer out so we did the same. When we reached the bottom of the right draw my uncle got stuck in a ditch. After that fiasco we found my other uncles and tied the deer up on the 4-wheeler and went back to camp to celebrate a giant deer. That took us most of the day so I had to go back to Selah for the week and get back at it next weekend. After a long week of school I left on Friday to hunt Saturday again. On Friday night I decided to hunt the same area my grandpa got his deer the weekend before. When I got there I immediately started seeing does. After quite a bit of hiking I saw my uncle on the ridge a few miles away. I could see he was watching a deer but I couldn't see it. I saw a few deer across the ridge from me and I thought I saw antlers on one so I made a plan that if it worked I would be right on top of them. The stalk worked perfect but the deer wasn't legal so he got out of there and I followed him. as I crested the ridge I saw another buck at 100 yards, I then backed down the ridge and came up to see if I could put three points on him but he didn't stay long enough. I followed the deer and he stopped again but I still couldn't see three points. As I crossed into the last draw on the property I saw my uncle’s truck so I called him to see if he was in it. The reply was very static and I thought I could hear something about a deer coming so I sat down and waited. About 5 minutes later I looked on the ridge to my left and saw antlers and ear tops. I could immediately see that there were two points and an eye guard. I knew that it had all been leading t this. I made sure that I had a bullet in the chamber, turned the safety off, let the deer cross the fence separating the property, and settled the crosshairs on the chest, took a deep breath, and squeezed the trigger. I watched the deer get hit and after about 15 yards he tumbled over. I couldn’t believe it I had made it happen. As I approached the deer I got out my camera. I moved the head for a better picture and it ended up tumbling down the hill about 50 yards. As I got to the deer I got my license out and punched my tag capping of the hunt. About this time my uncle and cousin appeared. They helped me drag it down to a flat spot to start dressing it. We finished that job and drug it down to the truck. We hung out there with the entire family for 3 hours just talking about today. We got ahold of my dad and he and our hunting buddy drove down from Toppenish to hang out and help with anything. What I learned hunting this year was that even though it may seem like a big deal sometimes to get your first solo anything, but no matter what you need your family will always be there no matter what. Achak by Jace Bair Hi, my name is Achak and I am a Native American living in a tribe called Blackfoot. My tribe lives in a vast open field with the mountains to our backs and a fast flowing river just a five minute walk ahead. The other side of the river has many beautiful trees, but unfortunately the other children and I are not allowed over there because the river is too dangerous to cross. I knew that soon we would have to leave closer to the mountains again. We have been following a herd of buffalo for many days and many nights. We spend our nights in tipis made from buffalo-hide. It does not take long to take down our camp and move to another place. My mother Nuna is responsible for taking down the tipi and my sister Numees was sent out with other girls to retrieve new materials for the next shelters. My mother and sister helped the other women skin and cook the buffalo all the men had brought back. Then they would repair the men’s clothing and shoes. But after we go into the tipi my mother is the one with the most respect and she becomes in charge even though my father is the shaman. My father is also the Shaman of our tribe. His name is Achachak, and that means spirit. When I grow up wish to take his place as shaman and take up his responsibilities. My fathers job is to protect the tribe from evil spirits by performing sacred rituals. The shaman also has special healing powers to treat sickness that is caused by evil spirits. In just one moon we would begin one of our most important rituals, the sun dance. It is neering summer and we must enable the renewal of our world. This sun dance is to be held by my mother. This ritual is held for a course of ten days. For the first four days we would have to move camp every day, then on day five we would build a medicine lodge and transfer bundles to the medicine woman and the offering of gifts by children and those of poor health. Tonight we were starting to run low on food. We were down to a few pounds of leftover salmon and some cranberries along with blueberries. If we wanted to stay alive we would need to track down that buffalo herd by the day of the sun dance. I can’t wait to sink my teeth into some soft, warm boiled buffalo meat with some nice juicy berries on the side. Everynight in my tribe we sing songs after to moon above our heads and we play the drums while a man performs the spirit dance around the fire.I am also being taught to play the drums with me friend Apisi. This would have to be one of my favorite times in the day because i love the songs we sing also in the future i hope to be one of the men who dance around the fire with the cool nights breeze and the light of the moon shining down on me. As the sun starts to hide behind the mountains we begin to pack up our camp in preparation of the first night of the sun dance i look up at the rising moon and I imagine the future of my life hoping to follow in my fathers footsteps and become the shaman of this incredible tribe. I know that my day will come for men to lead the tribe but I still have much to learn so until then I should stick to practicing my drumbing.
