2011 RUSH BYX “Behold how good and how pleasant it is for brothers to dwell together in unity!” Psalm 133:1 Purpose Brotherhood & Unity 1 betaupsilonchi.org | Rush BYX Beta Upsilon Chi, a National Christian Fraternity, exists for the purpose of establishing brotherhood and unity among college men based on the common bond of Jesus Christ. Identity We are a lifelong brotherhood of committed Christan men seeking the bonds of brotherhood and unity in Christ through the avenue of a social fraternity on a college campus. brotherhood unity faith leadership character betaupsilonchi.org 2 Letter from the Executive Board Staff Finding your place in college is a difficult challenge. I personally remember my first few weeks of college where I walked to class not seeing anyone that I knew and wondered where I would find my community for the next several years. As a Christian, I knew I would need a community of brothers that would encourage and challenge me in my walk with Christ and allow me to grow socially. Brian Baudoin Robert Bember I vividly remember walking into my first BYX meeting as a potential rushee. I was greeted by several senior brothers. I walked to my seat and was introduced to a few other brothers sitting around me. Immediately I felt welcomed by the brothers and grew excited for what was to come. I listened to the president welcome everyone to open chapter and talk about the rush activities that were ahead in the coming week. I watched as several brothers began to lead worship. In all honesty, it was the first time I experienced a group consisting of exclusively men worship the Lord with all their heart. I knew after the first meeting that Beta Upsilon Chi was the fraternity for my college experience. Even to this day, the brothers I met in Beta Upsilon Chi are some of my closest friends. They are men that I prayed with and fought for spiritually as well as traveled with to all of our date parties and formals. The Lord used the men of BYX to sharpen me from a young man into a mature believer in Christ, ready to step forward in the world upon graduation. Nick England Chris Godfrey BYX is a lifelong brotherhood of committed Christian men seeking the bonds of brotherhood and unity in Christ through the avenue of a social fraternity on a college campus. I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your interest in the Beta Upsilon Chi fraternity and hope to meet you in the future as you make the choice to rush BYX. Throughout the year, the members of Beta Upsilon Chi have opportunities to come together with brothers from all over the country. Summit Ski Week Each January, the National Staff of Beta Upsilon Chi hosts Summit Ski Week in Colorado. Summit is open to all pledges, members and alumni. This event has become an annual tradition for the fraternity and one of the rare and special opportunities for brothers from all over the country to come together under the common bond of Jesus Christ. Attendants enjoy brotherhood and unity in Christ through fellowship, worship and encouraging teaching. On top of that, brothers ski for three days on some of the nicest slopes in the country. National Officer Training Each November, the newly elected officers of each local chapter travel to the Dallas-Fort Worth area for National Officer Training. During this weekend-long event, the National Staff and Board of Directors equip the leaders of the fraternity during a wide variety of teaching sessions. The brothers attend breakout sessions designed to prepare them for their specific officer position. The chapters also face off in a series of competitions known as Battle of the Brethren. COR Leadership Retreat The COR Leadership Retreat is a two-week, three-city retreat focused on growing brothers spiritually, academically and professionally through sessions with business professionals and ministers, as well as exciting teambuilding activities hosted by the National Staff, Executive Board and notable alumni. The National Staff chooses 12 elite leaders in the fraternity from a pool of applicants to attend the retreat each August. The purpose of the COR Leadership Retreat is to identify and develop leaders within BYX for their current spheres of influence and future endeavors. betaupsilonchi.org 6 In order to be initiated into Beta Upsilon Chi, all pledges go through a God-honoring and purposeful, yet difficult, pledge semester. Throughout the pledgeship process, pledges will be pushed to grow as men, grow as brothers and grow into the image of Jesus Christ. Pledgeship is designed to breed commitment. As a lifelong brotherhood, it is necessary for pledges to grasp the vision of BYX and commit to their brothers for four years and a lifetime after that. The pledge semester is a time to build relationships that will last forever. Pledges can expect a challenging, enjoyable and Christhonoring experience every step of the way. In addition to participating in weekly chapter meetings, pledges will attend pledge meetings, work with their pledge brothers on weekly missions and learn about the history of the fraternity in order to earn membership into Beta Upsilon Chi. “As iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another.” Proverbs 27:17 Pledging BYX Bryce Helsel, Georgia BYX has been the biggest blessing in my college journey. God has shaped me through the men in BYX more visibly than any other acting force. I have made friends for life in BYX. Lincoln Ferguson, Oklahoma BYX has given me a place to join with other brothers in Christ and grow spiritually. Looking forward to the many years ahead! 7 betaupsilonchi.org | Rush BYX Cell Groups Weekly cell groups separate Beta Upsilon Chi from other social fraternities. Cell groups consist of four-to-six brothers who come together to study Scripture, provide accountability and develop deep relationships with their brothers and their Savior. Cell groups are often considered the heart of BYX. Brothers see much growth, and friendships go from good to great within cell group. College is a time when boys mature into men, and cell groups play a key role in developing boys into passionate, consistent, Christ-following men. Cell groups, and BYX in general, should never replace church involvement. Instead, they should spur brothers toward a healthier relationship with Christ and, hopefully, increased involvement in the church and other ministries. Lucas Aubrey, Texas A&M It has meant so much to me in the fact that I am an only child and never had a big brother or any brother there to help and support me. BYX has done so much for me in my growth through the overall unity of brotherhood. Russell Leonard, Auburn In the first few months of starting BYX, I have already met a great group of solid Christian guys. In the first couple of cell groups, our group has been more personal and open than any other group that I have been apart of similar to it. Everyone in my cell group has really focused on keeping me accountable for my actions, so that I can become the man that God designed me to be. betaupsilonchi.org 8 Social & Campus Life Beta Upsilon Chi seeks to consistently develop a greater sense of brotherhood and unity within the fraternity, and a major means of doing this is through socials. BYX hosts and participates in a variety of events throughout the semester, allowing the fraternity to shine the light of Jesus Christ to campus. Each semester, brothers can look forward to a calendar filled with exciting events. Chapters host a number of date parties, headlined by formal and semi-formal dances. To further the relationships of brothers, brotherhood events such as retreats, tailgates and intramurals sports, are a key component of the fraternity’s schedule. 9 betaupsilonchi.org | Rush BYX BYX is active in campus Greek life. The fraternity collaborates with sororities for joint social and service events. BYX often participates in homecoming festivities and Greek philanthropic events. Brothers have a number of opportunities to serve the community together as well. One of the fraternity’s most prominent events is Island Party. In 1985, the fraternity’s founding fathers held Island Party to announce the founding of the fraternity. Each campus hosts Island Party annually as an open event, which the entire campus is invited to attend. betaupsilonchi.org 10 2011 check us out online www.betaupsilonchi.org
