Storage
• Should you not forecast to use your tester/meter for a few days, simply
fill its sensor cap with HI 70300 storage solution.
• For long term storage (months), it is recommended to fill a container with
2 inches (5 cm) of HI 70300 storage solution and let the tester/probe sit
in it. Monitor the storage solution level periodically as it will evaporate
over time.
*Storage prevents pH sensors from premature degradation and allows for
ultra fast sensor response/reading. A sensor left dry for more than 2-3 months
will give slow response, will suffer from drifting of readings and other
malfunctions. A sensor replacement will then be needed.

pH & ORP monitor with LED alarm signals
HI 981406 has been specially designed for water treatment applications
where both pH and ORP (Oxidation Reduction Potential) need to be
monitored. There are two separate setpoints for pH and ORP which the
operator can adjust at will. Once the pH setpoint is exceeded, the
appropriate LED light will come on to alert the operator. Likewise, once
the ORP level drops below the setpoint, the red ORP light will stay on.
HI 981406 is supplied with HI 1283 ground probe that basically prevents
currents which are prevalent in water basins, from disturbing the
measurements. The optional HI 2114P/2 pH electrode and HI 3214P/2
ORP electrode are specially designed for the swimming pool market.
Their purpose-built fiber salt-bridge is particularly resistant to clogging in
pools.

Hanna’s HI 99141 is a waterproof, portable pH/temperature meter specifically designed for boiler & cooling tower applications. HI 72911 double junction pH electrode
(included) has an unbreakable stainless steel body and a flat tip. The electrode also features an annular Teflon® junction for maximum surface contact giving increased
response and stability. The stainless steel body of the probe functions as a shield and adds to the sensor’s life. The flat tip is easy to clean and prevents solids in
solution from collecting on the sensor. This advanced electrode also contains an integral temperature sensor and a mini amplifier to boost the electrode signal
eliminating the effects of noise and interference. The meter reads from -2.00 to 16.00 pH while simultaneously showing the temperature in °C or °F. Graphic icons
guide operations and a stability indicator with hold feature determines when to freeze the reading for easy record keeping. Calibration is performed automatically at
one or two points with standard or NIST calibration buffers. Battery life is over 1500 hours and at startup, the LCD shows the remaining battery power. In addition, BEPS
(Battery Error Prevention System) prevents bad readings due to low voltage and an auto-off period of 8 minutes saves battery power.

Precision kit for measuring pH of soil directly with special electrode
The HI 99121 kit has been designed to address the question of correct and rapid measurement of
pH directly in soil. Every item in this kit has been made to facilitate measurements in the field
without compromising accuracy. HI 99121 can test the pH of soil directly or after preparation of a
diluted sample. In order to measure the pH directly, the kit includes a plastic auger to perforate the
ground. The pH and temperature can be directly tested with the 3-in-1 conic shaped electrode with
even a slightly moist soil. For higher degrees of accuracy, or for stony ground where the electrode
may be damaged, use the specially made HI 7051 test solution. This solution is included in the
package to help you measure pH more precisely by diluting a sample of the soil in it. The kit
naturally includes a pH meter. However, in order to facilitate fast and reliable measurements, the
supplied pH meter is HI 991001 complete with HI 1292D electrode, pH 4 and pH 7 calibration
sachets, beaker, auger and a practical and rugged carrying case. HI 991001 meter is waterproof
and sophisticated yet engineered for its simplicity. The 3-in-1 pH electrode, HI 1292D, has been
designed for direct soil measurement. It has a conic, rugged tip and can be directly inserted in
moist or soft soil. The electrode incorporates a temperature sensor right near the tip to enable it
to measure and compensate for the temperature quickly. It also houses a miniaturized amplifier to
provide greater stability in spot measurements. The dual-level LCD shows the pH value from -2 to
16 in hundredths of units. It also displays the temperature on the secondary level at the same time.
With a menu-driven custom microprocessor, the user is helped with clear prompts during
operation and calibration.

deposits, road salt leaching or saline soils. High levels
of sodium can cause poor aeration and decrease the
ability of the plant to take nutrients.
Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) is
defined as the amount of solids
dissolved in a solution.

Measure the salt content of water
Worldwide fish farming has made great strides in the past two decades with
aquaculture becoming a prime source for quality seafood in an ever growing
industry. As the methods and products keep changing, one crucial factor remains
the same: the salinity of the water. The main component of salt in seawater is
sodium chloride. The SALINTEST can help you monitor the concentration of
sodium chloride assuring high quality in aquaculture. SALINTEST is also ideal
for marine fish tanks and aquariums. Instruments for measuring salinity of
seawater currently available on the market are cumbersome and difficult to use.
Hanna has re-engineered this compact salt tester with a more durable,
ergonomic casing and a larger LCD. Besides applications in aquaculture,
SALINTEST is also ideal for checking salt concentrations in live fish storage
tanks, tropical fish aquariums, refrigerated storage and oceanographic
investigation.

Ideal for measuring samples from deionized water to fertilizer stock tanks.
HI 9033 and HI 9034 have been proven time and again to hold up under extended use in wet, humid, dusty and muddy conditions. HI 9033 utilizes a single probe to
perform all conductivity readings in four ranges. This allows the user to measure samples from deionized water to fertilizer concentrate without having to switch or
recalibrate the probe.
HI 9034 measures total dissolved solids (TDS) in three ranges to offer the highest accuracy when performing measurements in diverse applications such as HVAC,
waste water treatment and reverse osmosis. All three ranges can be activated at the touch of a button without having to change the conductivity probe.
Both meters perform measurements with ATC (automatic temperature compensation) which adjusts for the effects of temperature. These portable instruments also
feature BEPS (Battery Error Prevention System) technology that alerts the user when low batteries could affect the readings.

Waterproof soil & liquid pH meter
HI 993310
Direct soil & liquid EC meter
GUIDE FOR DIRECT SOIL MEASUREMENT
1) When checking direct soil pH and conductivity, always remember
you will be making a reference between TRUE and SOIL reference
values.
5) The next step is to take the
measurements directly in the soil,
again, following the instructions from
the operators manual.
2) Start by gathering samples of the soil medium and draw a
reference table to record your data.
Note : these readings will be different from
the dilute solution readings due to the
physical properties of the two materials and
the effects on conductivity.
Dilute
Solution
6) Record your measurements on the second line of the pH or
conductivity reference table.
Soil
3) Prepare a dilute solution with each sample (example : 2 parts
distilled water for 1 part soil).
4) Take the measurements of the dilute solutions
with the HI 99121 or the HI 993310, following the
instructions in the operators manual, and record this
data on the first line of the reference table for either
pH or conductivity. Your local agronomist or crop
advisor will help you determine if these values are
correct.

7) During the measurements in soil, always use consistent and
repeatable measuring techniques for analysis.
Example :
- always test at the same time interval after irrigation;
- use same depth in each pot or bag;
- use same distance and depth from drip emitter;
- same medium types.
8) When the chart is complete, you will compare the true and soil
reference values. If there are no large differences between these two
values, you are ready to begin measuring directly in the soil using
only the soil reference values as a target.

Soluble salts
Measuring soluble salts provides a general
indication of nutrient deficiency or excess. Excess
soluble salts are very common and generally results from
too much fertilizer in relation to the plant’s needs, but
inadequate watering and leaching or poor drainage are
other causes. Sometimes high soluble salt levels occur
when root function is impaired by disease or physical
damage. Always check the physical condition of the
root system when sampling soil for testing.

PREPARING A SOIL SAMPLE FOR ANALYSIS
There are several methods available to obtain a soil sample for measurement. The objective is to find a method you can use that will give you
consistent results. Below we have indicated one method commonly used in agriculture.
In all cases, the goal is to prepare a sample which is as clean as possible. Any coloration or turbididty in the samples will adversely affect the ability of
the unit to give an accurate reading.
2 : 1 Ratio method
+
=
Step 1. Take a sample of soil and mix it with distilled water, 85 g (3 oz) of soil with 170 g (6 oz) of distilled water.
Then let the mixture stand for approximately 30 minutes in order to stabilize.
Step 2. Filter the solution with a medium filter (C 0002-12.5) through a funnel into a clean cup. If the filtrate is not
clear, run through a clean filter again until you have a translucent solution.
Step 3. If your solution is not translucent, use the Activated Charcoal included in the kit, mix with the solution, and
filter one more time. This should give you a translucent liquid, and you will be ready to begin your analysis
procedures. Ideally, you should filter enough of the solution to have an end result of 50 ml of liquid.
Step 4. Follow the instructions in the operators manual provided with your meter to mix and measure your
samples to determine the analysis of the parameter you are measuring.

Modified Winkler method. The reaction between Dissolved Oxygen and
the reagent causes a yellow tint in the sample.
The Hanna HI 93732N utilizes a sophisticated custom microprocessor and a modified Winkler method to measure dissolved oxygen accurately and quickly. Measurements
are made in a few short steps that can be performed by technical and non-technical operators alike. In fact, all you need to do is insert a cuvet containing your sample
into the meter and press ZERO. This will calibrate the meter to your sample in seconds. Then add a few drops of the reagents to the sample to generate a color whose
intensity depends on the D.O. content. Place the reacted sample back in the meter and the instrument will do the rest of the work for you! HI 93732N will display the D.O.
concentration in tenths of ppm in clear digits and on a large LCD. No need to worry about temperature changes, membrane status or salinity variations. Ease of use and
accuracy are not the only qualities of the Hanna HI 93732N. In fact, you will be pleasantly surprised to know that HI 93732N with all its benefits is priced at a fraction of
the conventional D.O. meters on the market.

Measuring Dissolved Oxygen
Oxygen meters are used to determine the quantity of dissolved oxygen
in liquids. Two measurement scales are commonly utilized: parts per
million (ppm); or the percentage saturation (%), which is defined as the
percentage of oxygen dissolved in 1 liter of water. It is necessary to
determine the quantity of dissolved oxygen present in water because it
is an indicator of water quality. It is therefore important to monitor civil
and industrial waste water where low concentrations indicate pollution.
Applications
Oxygen meters are used for measuring and monitoring the oxygen
content at the various points in the water circuit of steam boiler
installations. Another application of oxygen meters is in the prevention of
metal corrosion, such as in heating systems, where one of the
factors affecting the rate of corrosion is the percentage of oxygen present.
Another very important application is in fish farming and hydroponics,
where oxygen levels should be continuously monitored both to attain
optimal reproduction and growth, and to prevent high mortality caused
by low oxygen. Nuclear power stations are also suitable for oxygen
measurement of their heavy water.

circuitry
The HI 8043 is a versatile D.O. meter
developed for use in the school laboratory.
A common 9 volt battery supplies the unit
with up to 100 hours of continuous power
making it truly portable. There is also a low
battery warning that helps eliminate the
possibility of taking an erroneous reading
due to low power. The simplicity of this meter
is its greatest asset. Simply select the O2
mode and the polarographic probe will
supply you with accurate dissolved oxygen
measurements in mg/l. Switch the dial to °C
to show the temperature readings. The STB
mode is particularly useful to keep the
current flowing through the probe which is
continuously polarized and ready for use.
HI 91410
HI 91410 is a portable, printing D.O.
meters designed for continuous
monitoring and recording at
selectable time intervals. The lowpower printer uses regular paper that
is easily sourced and will not fade
over time. HI 91410 combines
printing functions with the capability
to log measurements. In addition to
supplying the user with instant printouts of D.O., it also provides
datalogging facilities that will store up
to 8000 readings. These measurements can be scrolled through at any time, printed or even transferred
to a computer system by the optional HI 9200 infrared transmitter. This
infrared connection is important in humid environments where a standard RS232 plug on a meter could become damaged. The meter
automatically compensates for two very important parameters: altitude
from 0 to 1900 meters (6230') and salinity from 0 to 40 g/l.

Plant Light Requirements
Light provides the energy source needed for plants to manufacture food (photosynthesis).
The amount of light is commonly measured in foot-candles (ft-c) or lux. Plants differ
greatly in their light intensity requirements. Indoor plants are often classified by the
amount of light necessary for growth:
Light Intensity
Quality of light is very important in the workplace, schools,
greenhouses, fish farms and public buildings. Too little light
(or luminous intensity) affects the quantity and quality of
performance of both people and crops. Hanna's light meter
uses special optic filters to match the spectral sensitivity of
the human eye.
• Low (minimum 1.1 Klx, .8 to 2.1 preferred for good growth)
• Medium (minimum 1.1 to 1.6 Klx, 2.1 to 5.4 preferred)
Luminous intensity is measured and reported in footcandles (ft-c) or in lux (lx). Light meters are commonly
referred to as lux meters. One lux is equal to one lumen per
square meter and one foot-candle is equal to one lumen
per square foot. To convert measurements use the
following formulae:
• High (minimum 1.6 to 10.8 Klx, 5.4 to 10.8 preferred)
• Very high (minimum 10.8 Klx, 10.8 + preferred)
About 1.1 Klx for 12 hours per day are necessary simply to maintain plant quality for one
year and at least 2.1 Klx for 12 hours per day are necessary for foliage plants to manifest
any benefit from fertilization.
foot-candle = lux x 0.0929
lux = foot-candle x 10.764
While lack of sufficient light results in poor plant growth, too much light can also be
harmful. Shade plants cannot tolerate excessively high light levels. When a plant receives
too much direct light, the leaves bleach or scald, sometimes dying. This often happens
after moving a plant outdoors in direct light. Any changes in light intensity should be
gradual.
Hanna's light measuring sensor is a photo diode that
converts incident light into an electronic signal that is read
and displayed on the meters LCD as Klx which is 1,000 lx.
So multiply the reading by 92.9 to get the measurement in
foot candles.

Plant Nutrition
The three elements that are most needed by plants are nitrogen (N), phosphorous (P) and potassium (K).
This is the reason why they are called macronutrients and should be given to plants.
Nitrogen is indispensable for the plant’s
life and is a key factor in fertilization.
Nitrogen allows the development of the
vegetative activity of the plant, in
particular, causes lengthening of trunks
and sprouts and increases the
production of foliage and fruits. An
excess of nitrogen weakens the plants’
structure creating an unbalanced
relationship between the leaves and the
stalks. In addition, the plant becomes less
resistant to diseases.
25
Phosphorous is an important element in
the composition of DNA and RNA, the
regulators of the energetic exchange
(ATP & ADP), as well as the reserve
substances in seeds and bulbs. It
contributes to the formation of buds,
roots, blooming, and lignification.
A lack of phosphorous results in:
stifling of plant, slow growth, a reduction
of production, smaller fruits and a lower
expansion of the roots.
Even if Potassium is not a constituent of
important compounds, it plays a
remarkable role in many physiological
activities like the control of cellular turgor
and the accumulation of carbohydrates. It
increases the size of fruits, their flavor, as
well as yielding a positive effect on the
color and fragrance of flowers.
Potassium also makes plants more
resistant to disease.

Honey Color Analysis
Analyzer & refractometer
C 221 - Honey color analyzer
The C 221 portable microprocessor analyzer measures the percent light transmittance of
honey compared to analytical reagent grade glycerol. The transmittance value allow
identification of the honey Pfund grade. The instrument directly displays the measurement
result expressed in mm Pfund.
Measurements are made using matched square optical cuvets having a 10 mm light path.
Display codes aid the user in routine operations.
The C 221 features an auto shut-off feature that will turn the instrument off after 10
minutes of non- use.
The companion Honey Refractometer for measuring water content is rugged and simple
to use with easily identifiable radings. This high precision refractometer measures 12 27% water content.

Honey color varies naturally in a wide range of tonalities,
ranging from light yellow to amber, dark amber and black in
extreme cases. Sometimes green or red hues may occur.
Color of untreated honey depends on botanical origin: for
this reason color is very important for definition and
commercial classification fo monofloral honeys. Honey
darkens with age, and other changes in color may result
from beekeeper’s interventions and from different ways of
conservation (e.g.: use of old honeycombs, contact with
metals, high temperatures, exposure to light, etc.).
The primary characteristic for commercial honey classification is color. Color classes are expressed in millimeters
(mm) Pfund grades, compared to an analytical grade

HI 9053 and HI 9055 are microprocessor-based thermocouple
thermometers that supply the user with reliable readings in the
higher temperature ranges. These meters are housed in a rugged
ABS casing that protects them for years. The powerful microprocessor provides several added functions to the performance of
these meters. HI and LO keys allow the user to recall the
highest and lowest readings taken. A MEM HOLD and MR button
makes it possible to freeze a reading on the display, and then recall it
at a later time. The alarm functions can be set at a high and low point
to alert the user in the event of an out-of-range condition. The built-in
acoustic alarm and temperature differentials are valuable features for
all engineering tests and process monitoring. The HI 9053 monitors
temperature on the Centigrade scale and the HI 9055 measures in
the Fahrenheit range.

Infrared radiation emitted from an object depends on its temperature. The Hanna HI 99550 infrared thermometer employs this technology to measure the surface
temperature. Infrared measurements are extremely practical with an instantaneous response time. Another main advantage is the non-intrusive nature of the
measurements. This feature can translate itself into substantial savings in industries where products are sealed or pre-wrapped. In order to measure the
temperature, simply point to the product or the spot and hold down the measurement key. The measured value will be immediately displayed on the LCD. This type
of non-intrusive measurement is also useful when the surface temperature is high, for difficult-to-reach places or due to hygiene requirements. Hanna’s HI 99550 is
designed with a wrist-strap and HOLD function for greater ease of use. The fast response time coupled with these features, makes the Hanna infrared meter
particularly attractive for repetitive tests in the factory or on the production line.

The HI 141 series is a family of temperature data loggers with either one or two channels, internal or external temperature sensors, and an optional LCD. External
temperature sensor models feature one or two stainless steel sensors on a 1 meter (3.3') cable for direct insertion. HI 141 can store up to 16,000 temperature
samples in a protected, non-volatile EEPROM memory. The logging interval can be set from once per second up to every 24 hours and logging delay start can be
set anywhere up to 199 hours. The MIN or MAX temperature between logging intervals can also be stored. All of your collected data is tamper-proof and stored into
serial numbered lots. The user interacts with the logger; setting data acquisition parameters or downloading logged data, through an RS232 serial port on a Windows®
PC. The HI 141000 Windows® software supports communication between the logger and the PC through the HI 141001 infrared transmitter. The housing is
waterproof to IP 67 standards and can include a convenient hanging loop (simply add an "H" to the end of the code). A long-life AA lithium battery provides power.
For a typical 1 minute logging interval, your battery will last about 4 years. Hanna's unique Battery Error Protection System (BEPS) signals when it is time to change
the battery and the housing is designed so you can change the battery yourself. The HI 141 series feature a LCD that show immediately the current temperature,
channel and status of the logging sequence according to your programmed instructions

INFO
Turf temperature can change dramatically during
the winter and spring seasons. Knowing what is
happening under the protective covers is critical for turf
managers. The new turf temp from Hanna Instruments will log
and record historical and real time data of temperature activity
both; under the protective covers, and the ambient
temperatures around the recorders. This gives the turf
manager another important tool in the job to
maintain perfect playing surfaces.

Calibration & Maintenance Solutions
It is difficult to exaggerate the importance
of buffer and maintenance solutions.
Expensive equipment is often utilized
well below its full capabilities due to lack
of proper maintenance of sensors. With
Hanna solutions, this is no longer a
problem.
