WINDOWS OF
OPPORTUNITY
WORKSHOP
GPHCC held Windows of Opportunity, a workshop
to educate small minority business owners on the
benefits that minority chambers offer to members. Varsovia Fernandez, President and CEO of
the Greater Philadelphia Hispanic Chamber of
Commerce, Lynne Williams, Program Manager for
the African American Chamber of Commerce, and
Narasimha (Nick) Shenoy, Executive Director of
the Asian American Chamber of Commerce represented their respective organizations.
Nick Shenoy, discussed the missions and goals
of the AACC, the benefits of networking, minority certifications, the procedures needed to start
up a business, and how to maintain its growth
and prosperity. Several important points were
to encourage business between Asian and
mainstream businesses, to serve as liaison for
cooperation’s seeking business relationships in
the Asian community, and to provide Technical
and Educational support to small and emerging
businesses.
Lynne Williams, provided the audience with a
short but descriptive summary about the African
American Chamber. Ms. Williams discussed the
programs offered by the chamber and the necessary requirements for becoming a member. Ms.
Williams presented with personal approach and
encouraged others to do the same. She encouraged minorities to take pride in their community’s
businesses and “to truly believe in their success.”
She also elaborated on the phrase “who will invest
in your business if you don’t?”
In addition to discussing the benefits and services
that GPHCC offers Varsovia Fernandez presented
the Hispanic Chamber’s marketing strategy and
reiterated the importance of role modeling to
minority youth and encouraged business owners
and professionals to help youth grow into a more
educated, employable and accountable community through civic engagement and professionalism. The Hispanic Chamber of Commerce
highlighted how it promotes the expansion and
success of Hispanic business by helping Latino
professionals access the resources and services
that would allow them become educated on the
importance of business management concepts,
Latino markets and workforce development. Ms.
Fernandez also touched on the future programs
the GPHCC seeks to establish.
The workshop was very informative and proved
to be very helpful to minority businesses in the
Greater Philadelphia area. Several attendees
became new members of the diverse chambers.

THE GOLDEN BLOCK IN NORTH PHILADELPHIA
IS THE NEW HOME FOR CAMEO STAFFING SYSTEMS!
After months of discussions between the Greater Philadelphia Hispanic Chamber of Commerce and Cameo
Staffing Systems, a Middlesex County company, the organization opened a new office in North Philadelphia’s
Golden Block. The local Cameo office main goal is to hire unskilled Latinos for customer service, data entry and
clerical work in Fortune 500 companies. For the Hispanic Chamber, doing this is a big deal because this new
business will help improve the local economy through job creation and tax revenues.
This process stimulated economic development in North Philadelphia by connecting Cameo with HACE who
leases commercial space in the Latino community. The company hired three Latinos to operate the new office
that will fulfill 100 newly created jobs for Philadelphians.
Congratulations Cameo in your Philadelphia home!

GPHCC LAUNCHED A NEW INTERNSHIP PROGRAM THIS
SUMMER TO HELP AREA STUDENTS BECOME FAMILIAR WITH
BUSINESS SKILLS WHILE HELPING PREPARE THEM FOR THE
WORKPLACE
ABOUT GPHCC SUMMER & FALL 2007 INTERNS:
CLAUDIA FLORES, a third-year student at the University
of Delaware who majors in Honors Economics and
Honors International Relations with a concentration in
Development in Latin America. Claudia helped create
GPHCC new membership models by using a projectbased approach towards deliverable. Claudia had the
opportunity to work with member company TUMAKO
Consulting among other talented individuals. Claudia
has been on the Dean’s List on numerous semesters
and received the Latino Student of Distinction award in
her first and second year. While attending college, this
Latina role model student works as an undergraduate
research assistant at the Disaster Research Center
of the University of Delaware and works on her honors
thesis, which tests the economic impact of Hurricane
George on small businesses in Puerto Rico. Claudia
plans to return to the Hispanic Chamber next summer.
NICOLAS RENDÓN is a Political Science Major junior
student at the University of Puerto Rico at Cayey (U. P)
and plans to transfer to Temple University to be closer
to and to work in the Latino community in Philadelphia.
Nick’s project during his internship was to help create a
membership survey to collect critical member information to help better serve them. Many members met Nick
this summer during his data gathering process. When
asked about his experienced, Nick shared the following
thought: “This summer I had a great opportunity to
work as an intern at the Greater Philadelphia Hispanic
Chamber of Commerce. The GPHCC is under new
management, and is doing a great service for the Latino
community in the Philadelphia area. During my internship I had the opportunity to learn many things about
the corporate world, which I believe I could not have
learned in school or any other setting besides a career.
There was lots of emphasis on responsibility, which I
feel will be very helpful in getting me prepared for my
future career. Overall it was a great experience and I
hope I will have the opportunity to work with the GPHCC
in the future. I am grateful to GPHCC staff for this useful experience.”
KAYLEEN LESHOCK is a Tourism and Hospitality
Management Junior at Temple University. Kayleen’s
projects during her internship was developing GPHCC’s
Membership Directory as well as actively participating
in chamber events. During the project, Kayleen had
the opportunity to work and interact with staff and
management of the Hispanic Chamber and the Greater
Philadelphia Chamber. Kayleen hopes to be a hospitality management consultant in the near future. In her
spare time, she likes to write, play poker, and travel. As
a daughter of Ukrainian and Italian countries she looks
forward to traveling to the Ukraine and Italy. Kayleen
described her experience at the GPHCC this past fall as
“a culturally enlightening journey that taught me the
diverse cultures and challenges Latin Americans share
through the various nationalities. I learned they all do
not eat the same thing, dance the same music or speak
the same Spanish.”
