A brief history of Beach Hockey
History of Beach Hockey
Beach Hockey started in 2004 and has grown in a few years into a serious sport. The last two
years Beach Hockey has been played by 3500 participants yearly. In 2008 and 2009 Beach
Hockey Europe organized the European Beach Hockey Trophy in Scheveningen, the
Netherlands. Besides teams from Holland there were also teams from Germany, Belgium and
Spain.
Beach Hockey, the facts
Beach Hockey is a battle in loose sand between 2 teams with 5 players on each side and is
played in an inflatable field, sized 20 x 30 meters. Instead of the original hockey ball Beach
Hockey is played with a small leather ball (Ø 20cm) and an original field hockey stick. The Dutch
Beach Hockey federation produced a special Beach Hockey stick in co-operation with Grays.
There is no special gear for goalkeepers
Beach Hockey, the game
Most of the time the players play the Beach Hockey ball through the air, passing as well as air
dribbling. There are many scoring opportunities because scoring is allowed from all distances.
Beach Hockey is a very spectacular and intensive game.

The players can enjoy surrounding live music, lounge & relax, barbecue, side events and beach
party's, which makes Beach Hockey a complete beach experience.

Organization Beach Hockey Europe
Beach Hockey Europe is an initiative of Bovelander & Bovelander who are specialized in organising
all kind of hockey activities in the Netherlands and abroad.
The brothers Floris-Jan en Jeroen Bovelander are well known in the world of field hockey. Floris-Jan
played in the Dutch National team from 1985 till 1996. He scored more then 200 times with his
famous penalty corner and became Olympic, World and European champion. Jeroen played for HC
Bloemendaal and was physiotherapist off the first men’s team of Bloemendaal and the Dutch girls
under 21.
The last 15 years over 85.000 children participated in the Bovelander sport camps & clinics. Besides
the camps & clinics Bovelander & Bovelander organizing The National Student Trophy, a Penalty
stroke competition, all hockey related business for companies as ABN AMRO, Auping, Shell and
more business events.
Bovelander and Bovelander do have a good cooperator with the KNHB (Dutch Hockey Association)
and organizing all kinds of events for them. At this moment Beach Hockey becomes an International
sport with the first European Beach Hockey Trophy in 2010.
