Live Tysmbaly Performance The Mellotones Live Robbie Burns Day
Robbie Burns Day
Robbie Burns Day is a celebration of the life and poetry
of Robert Burns, author of many Scottish poems. The
celebrations are normally held on or near the poet’s
birthday, January 25th. Community Members travelled
to our sister location, the Meadowlands, to celebrate
in Ancaster! We listened and danced to Scottish music
and ate delicious meat pies. The festivities ended with
a glass of Scotch and a toast.

The Mellotones Live
Tai Chi
V!VA Mississauga enjoyed the sweet sounds of the
Mellotones. Community Members Eugene and Geri
along with their good friends, Carol, Leigh, Ed and Joan
formed the group. The Mellotones have performed at
communities across the GTA and we were fortunate
enough to see their live performance. They performed
classic favourites and had all of our Community
Members clapping and singing along. Thank you so
much for an entertaining afternoon and we look
forward to seeing the Mellotones perform again.
Come and join us every Monday in the V!VAfit studio
for Tai chi and reap the rewards. Tai Chi is an ancient
healing art that has been used for centuries to help
promote the flow of energy throughout the body. It
is a practice that relies on the mind-body connection
to help create a healthy balance and improve overall
health. Tai Chi may also help improve both physical
health and emotional well-being. There are many
benefits to Tai Chi, including: pain relief, reduced
depression, improvements with arthritis pain, and
better sleep.

Live Tysmbaly Performance
Community Members had the pleasure of hearing a tsymbaly being played live by a Ukrainian
entertainer. What is a tsymbaly you ask? It is the Ukrainian version of the hammer dulcimer. It is a
chordophone made up of a trapezoidal box with metal (steel or bronze) strings strung across it. The
tsymbaly is played by striking two beaters against the strings. The beaters traditionally used leather
wrappings rather than the cotton wrap used by Hungarian and Romanian players.

7 Fun Facts
About:
St. Patrick’s Day!
Top o’ the morning to you! St. Patrick’s Day is just
around the corner, and you know what that means!
Get out your green garb, find some shamrocks and
build up your strength to enjoy a night of green beer
and junk food.
St. Patrick’s Day is a time to let loose and have a bit
of fun. But how did St. Patrick’s Day become the big
party that it is today?
Here are seven things you need to know about why
and how we celebrate St. Patrick’s Day.
What do we celebrate on St. Patrick’s Day?
St. Patrick’s Day started out as a feast day for
St. Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland. A feast day
is a celebration, usually in the Christian faith, that
is commemorated with a meal. People traditionally
celebrated St. Patrick’s Day by attending mass and
thinking about the life and legacy of St. Patrick.
Who was St. Patrick?
Today, St. Patrick’s Day celebrations don’t
have a lot to do with the holiday’s namesake.
Nonetheless, he is an important figure in Irish
Catholic history. Ironically, St. Patrick wasn’t even
Irish. He was born in Britain around A.D. 390 to an
aristocratic Christian family. According to folklore,
St. Patrick was kidnapped and brought to Ireland at
16, but he escaped and was reunited with his family.
He was later encouraged to move back to Ireland
by a voice he heard in a dream. St. Patrick became a
priest and then spent the rest of his life converting
the Irish to Christianity.
Did he really get rid of all of the Snakes in Ireland?
One common myth about St. Patrick is that he drove
all of the snakes out of Ireland. Unfortunately, this
is just a myth. Sure, there are no snakes in Ireland
today, but there actually weren’t any to begin with!
Why is St. Patrick’s Day on March 17th?
We celebrate St. Patrick’s Day on March 17th every
year to commemorate the day St. Patrick died in
A.D. 461. A mythology grew around the religious
figure, and by the 9th or 10th century, people in
Ireland began observing St. Patrick’s Day as a holiday!
When did it become all about partying?
St. Patrick’s Day started off as a relatively tame
holiday. In fact, it was a minor religious holiday in
Ireland until the 1970s. Pubs even closed on March
17th in Ireland every year until the 1970s. Some of
the modern revelry associated with St. Patrick’s Day
can be traced to the fact that prohibitions on eating
meat, drinking and dancing during Lent were lifted
for the day!
Why do we wear green?
There isn’t really one reason why green is the official
colour of St. Patrick’s Day, but green has a lot of
connections to Ireland. It’s featured in the Irish flag, it
symbolizes springtime, and Ireland is nicknamed the
Emerald Isle. Don’t forget, if you don’t wear green,
you risk being pinched!
Why are shamrocks considered the symbol?
According to legend, St. Patrick used shamrocks
(three-leaf clovers) to explain the
Holy Trinity of the Father, the Son
and the Holy Spirit while trying to
convert people to Christianity.
Throw on a green t-shirt, order
a Guinness, and impress your friends with your St.
Patrick’s Day knowledge. May you be touched by a
bit of Irish luck!
Sudoku!
The objective is to fill a the grid with digits in such a way
that each column, each row, and each of the nine 3×3 grids
that make up the larger 9×9 grid contains all of the digits
from 1 to 9.
