May 17th, 11am-3pm • Lakeview Park
About the cover:
Lorain County Metro Parks leased the 20 acres of
Lakeview Park from the city of Lorain in 2006.
Major renovation began on the bath house, which
is now the Rose Café along with the restoration of
the historic rose garden. Today guests can enjoy
magnificent sunsets, and a variety of recreational
activities such as swimming, lawn bowling, volleyball, concerts and educational programs.
Experience paddling and peddling in our area
through this annual event! On the beach, try out
various boats including kayaks, stand-up paddleboards, and canoes. Boats will be provided to try
out for FREE by LoCo Yaks, Great Lakes Kayaking,
and West River Paddle Sports. Solo paddlers required to be at least 9 years of age, younger aged
paddlers welcome to go out with an adult in a
canoe or tandem kayak. In the Event Garden, check
out bikes and various cycling organizations. As part
of the “Put a Lid on It” campaign, kids will learn
about helmet and bike safety, and also receive a
free bike helmet (first come, first serve)! Kids also
encouraged to bring own bike to the
event.
Learn more about paddling through
our Smartstart programs scheduled
on the beach. These programs taught
by certified American Canoe Association instructors
will provide an overview of safety and paddling
techniques. Also practice techniques on the water
with instructors. Smartstart will be held at 11:30am,
12:30pm, and 1:30pm. Pre-register by calling
1-800-LCM-PARK or at www.metroparks.cc. Check out
other informative paddling demos on the beach. At
Noon and 2pm, LoCo Yaks will provide “How to Pick
Your Gear” demos. At 1pm, check out at Stand-up
Paddleboard demo with West River Paddle Sports.
Make this an all-day family day through many other
activities taking place at the event! A Kid’s FUN Station will be set up on the beach. Also enjoy live music and food vendors! Near the Bath House, check out
many other stations providing interesting information
about adventure opportunities in our area. Questions?
Contact Jannah at (440) 967-7310. We look forward
to seeing you at Paddle and Pedal Fest!
Five thousand roses were originally planted at Lakeview Park in 1935 in the wheel
shape of the Rotary Club International Insignia. Over the years many of the roses died from
lack of upkeep and harsh weather conditions. In 2006 , the last few roses were removed,
the beds and walkways were completely redone, and an irrigation system was added. The
Rose Garden started to take shape with the planting of 1,248 individual rose bushes. Today
the Rose Garden is pleased to have restored the garden back to 5,000 rose bushes with the
help of sponsorship through individual donations. Donation forms are available online at
www.metroparks.cc under Donate Today Help Make A Difference.

Worldwide Solstice Festival
Vermilion River Reservation – Shelter #1 and Carriage Barn
June 21 • Noon-6pm
The WORLD WIDE SOLSTICE FESTIVAL is a grass roots initiative
that began right here in Lorain County and now has over 1,500
individual participants and 250 partner organizations involved
in over 30 countries around the globe. This event is a day to set
aside learn or teach something about solar astronomy and share it
with others.
SOLARACTIVITY, the founders of the WWSF and The Black River
Astronomical Society will be partnering with the Lorain County
Metro Parks at the Vermilion River Reservation, along with numerous other civic groups in Lorain County, Ohio to make the
WORLD WIDE SOLSTICE FEST a big hit locally. We will be offering
views of our sun, up close and personal in multiple frequencies
of light, using SAFE Solar Telescopes. Other gear will allow you to
HEAR and FEEL our Sun. We will have presentations to inform and
educate and some designed just to enjoy. We will have music, art,
arts & crafts, face painting, good food and more to bring this festive event to our community. Local Musician, Dave Lengyel will be
on hand to sing the song he wrote and recorded for the WWSF and
local Artist, Kelly Ricks will be manning an art exhibit, which will
include some of her very own world class art. Dan Walker will be
directing a scale model “PLANET WALK” where you can hike from
the Sun to Pluto and back. We will also have the WOLRD’S LARGEST PORTABLE SUNDIAL on hand. Come see the shadow from the
25 foot long GNOMON cast a shadow unto the 50 foot diameter
clock face and tell accurate time by the Sun’s position. You don’t
want to miss this exciting event!!!

June 8-12, 10:30am-12pm
Theme: Mother Goose Got Rhythm
The Glass Menagerie
By Tennessee Williams
May 1 – May 17
Directed by Fred Sternfeld
Catapulting then-unknown playwright Tennessee Williams into the American
lexicon forever, this classic play takes a hard, unforgiving look at the ties that don’t
always bind. Semi-autobiographical in nature, Williams’ tense drama introduced
the world to the Wingfields: a family made up of an absent father, sickly daughter,
overbearing mother, and a son who just wants to escape this life. When an evening
visit from a gentleman caller doesn’t go as planned, events are set in motion with irreparable consequences. Special daytime matinees are available for this production.

June 5-14
Book and Lyrics by Michael Gravois
Music by Zachary Badreddine

know come to life onstage in a whirlwind of song, storytelling and silliness! Featuring 12 classic fables performed by a cavalcade of farm characters, this minimusical will tickle the funny bone while teaching timeless principles. With puppets, rhythm, dance and poetry, Aesop’s Fable-ous Barnyard Bash is the perfect
performance for the whole family!
Trail Magic: The Grandma Gatewood Story
Movie Premiere
May 29th 7:30pm
TrueNorth Cultural Arts, Lorain County Metro Parks, and Eden Valley Enterprises present the movie premiere of Trail Magic, the story of Emma ‘Grandma’
Gatewood (based on the play of the same name). Grandma Gatewood was the first
woman to hike the 2,168 mile Appalachian Trail solo. What’s more, she did this at
the ‘young’ age of 67 years old, after raising eleven children. Grandma Gatewood
was one of the pioneers of ultra-light hiking and one of the founders of the Buckeye Trail.
