Introducing Lee Jay Nelson Lee Jay was born in Buffalo, New York to famous ventriloquist Jimmy Nelson. Growing up in show business and meeting famous celebrities provided for some interesting childhood memories. Lee Jay tells,” I remember meeting Milton Burl at NBC Studios and my dad telling me, that’s Uncle Milty, so I assumed he was my real uncle and called him that for years to find out, everybody called him Uncle Milty! Jimmy Nelson and side kicks Danny O’Day and Farfel the Dog were featured in the popular Nestle’s Quick television commercials for over 10 years. Lee Jay wanted to be a ventriloquist like his father but thought he would never be able to fill his shoes. Lee Jay began singing at 9 years old in the school choir and by the time he was in high school he had a job as a professional folk singer. Upon completing high school, he decided to enroll in the Air Force. His singing passion remained and talent continued to grow. Lee Jay dominated the Air Force Talent Contest three years in a row. With his Air Force service complete, Lee Jay started working with Nello Masci.at a nightclub in Washington, D.C for a short time before forming his own group, Lee Jay Nelson and Sound Unlimited. They performed throughout the United States and Europe for five successful years. After years of being on the road, Lee Jay was ready to find a gig that didn’t involve traveling. He landed a position at the famous Host Farm Resort in Lancaster, PA. where he became the Master of Ceremonies for their Cabaret Theatre. This position gave him an avenue to work with performers he had known as a youngster. With his background and experience in entertaining, Lee Jay soon became the Activities Director and introduced many new ideas. While his entertainment and management career were booming, Lee Jay added another career achievement as an actor. He has a credited role in the movie “Playing for Time”, an Emmy award winning production starring Vanessa Redgrave. Lee Jay says,” I got a call from a lady I worked with that was now a casting director, she ask me if I wanted a role in a movie she thought I would be perfect for, the answer was yes”. He was also an extra in the movie “Witness” starring Harrison Ford and a supporting role in the independent film “The Whole Truth”. Continued on Page 8 Page 7 Brittany Breeze RESIDENT NEWS Continued from Page 7 Lee Jay liked acting but realized this wasn’t his passion and wanted to get back to his roots. He became the Entertainment/Activities Director for Pocmont Resort in Pennsylvania. Lee Jay came up with the idea for a program that would appeal to seniors. He worked with physicians and educators to develop his new exercise concept, “Loose as a Goose.” It is a combination of chair aerobics, music and comedy that create an energetic and fun work out. The program was an instant success and operates to this day. After many visits with family in sunny St. Petersburg Florida, Lee Jay moved to Point Brittany in 2003 and decided to semi retire. These days he spends his time teaching “Loose as a Goose” and performing, his passion for entertaining still very much alive. You can catch a show at the clubhouse for his annual cabaret show or at First Friday Happy Hour. Look for next months article on, Do You Know Your Neighbors? If entry is after the gate personnel shift, visitor will follow instructions on the panel located at the East Gate entrance and Bldg. Six entrance. Residents are listed in alphabetical order. The visitor must scroll to your name and key in the 3 numbers shown after the name. When you answer the phone and accept the visitor, dial “9”, which will open the gate arm and the call will automatically disconnect. DID YOU KNOW? Point Brittany personnel are here to perform various duties that benefit the community. Please know that these employees want to be helpful if asked. Some things that they are asked to do by residents, could result in their reprimand and/or dismissal. A few requests that they receive but are not permitted to do include: They may not keep in their possession keys to mailboxes, owner’s unit or vehicles. They may not check owner’s units or feed their animals when they are away. They may not take their break or lunch in owner’s units. They may not perform private work during their scheduled shift. They may not leave early to take a resident to the airport. If offered a piece of furniture or other item, they may not collect it until after their scheduled shift. Maintenance staff may not enter an apartment unless they have a work order, with the exception of an emergency. Custodians may never enter a unit during working hours. Income received by work orders is income back to the buildings. Therefore, maintenance may not complete a task as an after hour job when it should have been completed as a work order during their scheduled shift. We try very hard to abide by the philosophy that “what we do for one, we must do for all”, therefore if we are asked to do something for a resident but can’t do it for all the residents or it violates company policy, then we must decline. Page 9 Brittany Breeze ADDITIONAL INFORMATION TIPS FOR REDUCING YOUR ELECTRIC COST With temperatures rising and cooling systems running for longer periods of time, it's the ideal time to take control of your electric bills. Set your thermostat on the highest comfortable setting. If you're leaving for the day, turn it up a couple of degrees. Clean or change your filters often. Dirty filters can increase operating costs by 20 percent. Don't block registers and return vents with furniture or drapes. Use a ceiling fan or portable fan to supplement your air conditioning. A fan can make you feel three to four degrees cooler and only costs a half-cent per hour to operate. You can now set your thermostat a few degrees higher and save on cooling costs. Use in occupied rooms since fans cool people, not rooms. As a safety precaution, turn off ceiling fans when you leave your home. For central air conditioning systems, keep the fan switch on your thermostat in the "auto" position when cooling. This gives you better cooling and humidity control. Having the fan switch "on" continuously could cost an extra $25 a month on your electric bill. Close blinds, drapes and shades during the hottest part of the day. This keeps the sun's rays from heating your house. If you suspect your air conditioning system is not cooling properly, have it checked promptly. A unit that is having operational problems can cause extremely high bills. If your air conditioning equipment is older and less efficient, compensate by being extra careful about temperature settings, hours of operation and filter condition. Use your microwave or countertop appliances for cooking instead of the oven or stove. Content from Progress Energy LIC. NO.
