TorchLight Spring 2013 - Epilepsy Center of Northwest Ohio
Spring 2013
Newsletter of the Epilepsy Center of Nor thwest Ohio addressing issues of Epilepsy/Seizure Disorders/Developmental Disabilities
The Epilepsy Center is Moving!
Yes, that’s right! The Epilepsy Center is on the move come June
of 2013, just down the street actually, to 1701 Holland Road in
Maumee!
After experiencing such growth over the past 3 years we are
already bursting at the seams in our current office as our Adult
Day Service program has really taken off. Our Adult Day Service
program reached capacity in a hurry after our move to our
current location back in March of 2009. The new location will
allow us to feature many new Day Service Programs including art
classes, computer labs and an activity area including billiards,
ping pong, and air hockey. Another area of need was of a restroom where someone needing a lift could be accommodated.
We do not have that in our current location, but at our new
building we will have two restrooms that will allow lifts to be
used with ease!
We outgrew our Corporate office as well, as we have coordinators
working out of closets and file rooms. This expansion will give
everyone the proper workspace needed to perform their jobs
in proper working conditions. It will also see the opening of our
new Training Center that will allow capacity of up to 50 people.
This will also provide space for our Living With Epilepsy
educational series and can be used by others to hold seminars
or meetings.
This is a very exciting time and the biggest move the Epilepsy
Center has made in its over 35 year history of operation. A large
sign, thanks to the grant from the Epilepsy Foundation of
Northwest Ohio, will be displayed proudly, lit up, in front on
Holland Road. There will be no question that The Epilepsy
Center of Northwest Ohio is here!
Stay tuned for upcoming details about our Open House in the
summer, and come help us celebrate this historical event of The
Epilepsy Center!
Practically a Golf Tournament
In cooperation with Toledo Refining Company, the Epilepsy Center
of Northwest Ohio is putting on its 24th Annual Practically a
Golf Tournament (PGT), Friday, May 17th at 1:30 p.m. Again
this fun filled event will be held at Levis Commons around the
Clock Tower. This event is an 18-Hole miniature golf tournament
that benefits the Awareness, Education and Outreach Programs
the Epilepsy Center provides for people affected by Epilepsy.
As is tradition, the event will be complete with music provided by
DJ Richie, drink tents, cornhole, 50/50 raffle, raffle prizes, and
lunch “at the turn”. Come out and enjoy a beautiful day of fun
and putt-putt golf on holes built by local builders in the Northwest
Ohio region. For more information about putting a team together
or sponsorship opportunities please feel free to call The Epilepsy
Center at 419.867.5950.

Letter from the Executive Director
Hopefully by the time you read this
spring has finally arrived. It sure is taking
its sweet time getting here. But rest
assured warmer weather is coming and
with it comes many of our great outings
and events. In this issue of the TorchLight you will read about our Practically
a Golf Tournament coming in May and
our weekend-long Family Camp in July. If
you have never attended or volunteered
at these two wonderful events I really
Roy Cherry
encourage you to come out and see what
they are all about. I promise you will have
a lot of fun and be inspired!
I would like to take this moment for some editorial comments
about the people we serve. Over the years there have been many
changes to the name of individuals for whom we provide services.
We now use the term people with intellectual disabilities. Not
that long ago it was termed developmental disabilities which
followed the “Remove the R-word” campaign to change mental
retardation. Now granted these terms are much better than
what was used early in history, terms that were much more
offensive, and if you heard them you would hardly believe they
were used in a medical sense.
I don’t know if I really like the term intellectual disabilities. To
me that doesn’t sound any better than mental retardation. How
about we just call them people? How about we just call them
Kelly, Jim, Joe, or David? How about we call them friends, great
people, or someone we truly care for?
As a society we need to come up with some sort of label or
term. It must help us to better understand or deal with some
people that might be a little different than us. In any case, society
will continue to change the term to try to be less offensive. I
don’t think it will ever end, but I think I will just continue to
consider the people we care for as some pretty great and
amazing individuals that I am proud to have met.
Thank you for listening.
Roy J. Cherry, CMA
Executive Director
It’s coming! ... Family Camp!
Mark your calendars for July 26 -28, 2013!
Before you can say, “Slap that Groundhog”, winter will be over
and it will be time to start making warm weather plans for your
family getaways. The Epilepsy Center of NWO has the perfect
getaway weekend lined up for people of all ages who are living
with epilepsy.
Family Camp, a tradition for many years, is once again being
offered at no charge to those living with seizures at Camp Libbey
in Defiance, OH. This year’s theme is Camp Nomoreseizures
(our own version of an American Indian tribe)! At camp, children
get to meet other children who live with seizure disorders, and
their siblings meet other brothers and sisters to share their
feelings. Parents socialize with other parents who understand
them. Information about the latest treatments for epilepsy, as
well as tips for living well with seizures, are offered in a relaxed,
non-threatening environment.
In addition to informational sessions, there will be crafts,
games, swimming and other family activities.
Come join the fun! If you can’t make it for the whole weekend,
and Saturday is the only day that works for you, you are certainly
welcome to come for the day.
Look for registration information soon and don’t forget to check
out our website and Facebook for the latest information on all
of our events. Just visit www.epilepsycenter.org or call us at

Do you find it hard to obtain health insurance due to pre-existing
conditions? You may be eligible for the new Pre-Existing Condition
Insurance Plan—a program for people who have a pre-existing
condition and have been without health coverage for at least six
months. People with pre-existing conditions face daunting
challenges—and high costs—when they shop for health insurance.
This new plan covers physician and hospital services and
prescription drugs. Premiums vary by state. Annual out-of-pocket
expenses for enrollees are capped.
Details about the program and how to apply may vary depending
on what State you live in. In some states, the U.S. Department
of Health and Human Services , with the help of the U.S. Office
of Personnel Management and the U.S. Department of
Agriculture’s National Finance Center, will run the Pre-Existing
Condition Insurance Plan; other states have asked to run the
program themselves. Regardless of which state you live in,
to qualify for the program you must have been uninsured for
at least six months. In addition, you must have a pre-existing
condition or have been denied insurance coverage because of a
medical condition.
For more information, call the Pre-Existing Condition Insurance
Plan toll-free at 1-866-717-5826 (TY 1-866-561-1604)
between the hours of 8 a.m. and 11 p.m. Eastern Time. Or visit
www.pcip.gov and select “Find Your State” to learn about
eligibility and how to apply.

Torchbearers of 2012
1st Quarter 2012
LaTonya Hills was
nominated by Gil
Seeburger. For all the
extra special care
she gave to Client
Ed Fin during his
last months of living.
LaTonya is a great example of someone
who goes above and beyond to ensure
that proper care is being provided for our
residents. It makes me excited to see that
we have staff with the drive and desire
to improve the lives of the individuals we
serve! I feel we are truly blessed to have
her as a staff now and hopefully for years
to come. I know that I cannot possibly be
the only staff that feels that LaTonya is an
exceptional employee and great asset to
this organization.
2nd Quarter 2012
Selena Flunder was
nominated by Linda
Coker for taking the
bus to be inspected
3 times and taking
the bus to get all
the repairs done on
her days off. She has been with us since
September of 2010 and has been nothing
but a firecracker since she got here.
3rd Quarter 2012
Gail Obliske was
nominated by Olga
Ruiz. Upon return
from her vacation,
Gail called her
Coordinator to ask
what she could do
to help. She noticed Client RA had a
Med Appt. and wanted to make sure it
was covered. Gail then offered to make
other arrangements with the clients she
normally works with so that she could
help cover the hours with RA for the week.
Great initiative Gail! Thank you! She has
been with us since December 20, 2004.
She has also been nominated three times
in the past.
4th Quarter 2012
