BOURNEMOUTH UNIVERSITY
UNIVERSITY CENTRE YEOVIL
IN PARTNERSHIP WITH…
Bournemouth University (BU) is an innovative university which offers a range of high quality
courses geared towards specific professions. A student-centered learning environment encourages
intellectual achievement as well as employability – something born out of the University’s
consistently excellent record of graduates moving into their chosen careers.
What does it mean if I am studying a
Bournemouth University validated course?
Validated courses are offered in partnership
between the University Centre Yeovil and
Bournemouth University (BU). Students enrol
directly with the University Centre Yeovil
rather than BU and do not have access to
BU’s learning resources and services. Instead,
students will use the learning resources and
services at the University Centre Yeovil, details
of which are included in this prospectus. You
can also come and see them at University
Centre Yeovil’s Open Events. The students
on BU validated courses will receive a
Bournemouth University award on successful
completion of the course and Bournemouth
University is ultimately responsible for the
academic standards and quality of its awards.

UNIVERSITY OF WALES TRINITY SAINT DAVID
UNIVERSITY CENTRE YEOVIL
IN PARTNERSHIP WITH…
University of Wales Trinity Saint David was
formed from three separate institutions; the
Swansea College of Art (established 1853), the
Swansea College of Education (est. 1872) and
Swansea Technical College (est. 1895).
In 1976, these three institutions came together
to form the West Glamorgan Institute of Higher
Education, which became the Swansea Institute
of Higher Education in 1992. In 2008, following
a successful two year inspection, it became
Swansea Metropolitan University.
In 2012, the University of Wales Trinity Saint
David merged with Swansea Metropolitan
University. This historic development enhanced
the already excellent student experience offered
by the two institutions, without affecting their
provision.
8
UCY_2015_Spreads_Amended_v2.indd 8
Despite these radical changes, the University
has stayed close to its roots and the three
founding institutions are still reflected in the
organisation’s faculty structure.
The University has a strong record of graduate
employment and research success. 60% of its
research work has been rated of “international
significance” and, in some cases, “world
leading” according to recent Research
Assessment Exercises with particular strengths
in Art & Design, Teaching and Engineering.
University of Wales Trinity Saint David now has
close to 7,000 students and is an established
and respected provider of undergraduate,
postgraduate and research qualifications, as well
as professional programmes. It has stayed true
to its 160 year history, remaining vocationally
driven and industry focussed.

the course information pages and on
www.ucy.ac.uk.
Where can I find out about specific courses?
You can read summaries of each of our

What are Foundation degrees (FdAs/FdSCs)
and Higher National Diplomas (HNDs)?

FINANCE
Student finance
When going to university, there are two main
expenses you will need to think about;
•
•
Tuition fees
The cost of living
UK students can apply for tuition fee and cost
of living support, while EU students can request
help with tuition fees. Support is available from
Government and universities. Some support is
means-tested.
How much are tuition fees?
Tuition fees vary between validating universities.
To find out how much your course will cost, visit
www.ucy.ac.uk.
Can I pay my course fees in instalments?
Yes. The University Centre Yeovil and its partners
will allow you to pay in instalments.
Please contact us on 01935 845454
for more information.
Will I need to budget for anything else?
While at university, you will need to remember to
budget for living expenses. If you plan to move
away from home to live nearer the University
Centre Yeovil, you need to think about the cost of:
•
•
•
Accommodation, including bills such as
electricity, gas, internet access, telephone etc.
Food
Transport
The average cost of these depends upon where
you live and your lifestyle, but it is important to
budget and not live beyond your income.
Financial support for
UK students
Government support
Loans for full-time students
There are two types of student loan available to
full-time students from England. You can take out
either, both or neither.
•

For students who have an adult who
depends on them financially.
Loans for part-time students
New part-time students may be able to claim a
tuition fee loan to cover fees. Eligibility depends
on the ‘intensity’ of your part-time course being
at least 25% of a full-time course. For example
if your course takes six years to complete
and the full-time equivalent takes three, the
intensity will be 50%.
Unfortunately, part-time students cannot
claim maintenance loans or grants at the time
of print. You may be eligible for the National
Scholarship Programme. Please see page 77 or
www.ucy.ac.uk for details.
How much money can I claim?
This depends upon your household income
and whether you have any child or adult
dependents. If you live with your parents, their
income will also be taken into account. Each
Student Finance awarding body has a calculator
on its website to help you estimate what you
can claim.
76
UCY_2015_Spreads_Amended_v2.indd 76
How do I pay back my loan?
Full-time students only start repaying their
loan(s) after they have finished their studies
and are earning over £21,000 a year (correct at
time of print). Part-time students who earn over
£21,000 a year will start repaying their loan
after three years, even if they have not finished
their course. After 30 years, regardless of what
you have already repaid, the debt is wiped out.
For the latest information, please visit the
Student Finance website for your country
(see below).
When should I apply?
You can apply for student loans and other
financial help from the Government once
you have identified the course that you would
like to apply for. To make sure that you receive
your money on time, do not wait until you have
a confirmed place. Simply name the course
you are most likely to attend on your
application.
How do I apply?
Students from England can apply for tuition fee
loans, maintenance loans and grants through

If you are from Wales, Scotland or Northern
Ireland, you can apply for grants through the

YEOVIL: THE HEART OF THE COUNTRY,

Yeovil is the largest town in South Somerset and
a rapidly growing, vibrant place to live and study.
It is an economic hub supporting approximately
170,000 people and boasting a wealth of great
independent and chain shops and restaurants,
as well as some fantastic music, arts and leisure
facilities and venues. As our students soon

played in the town.
Although there is plenty to see and do in Yeovil
itself, the town is in the heart of the Somerset
countryside, within easy access of the A303
and M5 and less than an hour from Dorset’s
spectacular coastline, Devon’s beautiful
countryside and seaside towns and cities
including Bristol, Bath and Exeter.
The Yeovil Town Vision project is leading new
developments, with plans for new sports
facilities, commercial and residential villages and
more, ensuring that Yeovil will continue to offer
students a dynamic social experience in an idyllic
country setting and remain a destination of choice
within the South West.
The Yeovil Town Vision motto is “The Heart of
the Country, the Mind of a City” and Yeovil

worlds.
