Lines of over 500 people waited for an autograph session with select Reds players and personalities, which lasted approximately four hours. Reds players Jay Bruce and Todd Frazier took part in the event, as did Reds broadcaster Thom Brennaman, General Manager Walt Jocketty, and Dayton Dragons Manager Todd Benzinger. The Reds visit started at 3:30 p.m. with a question-and-answer session from fans. The Reds representatives then signed autographs for fans from a variety of ages. The players spoke positively about their hopes for the season, and all representatives said they thought the Reds could break their nine-year streak of losing seasons this year. The Reds’ Caravan program travels the state of Ohio and surrounding states each January and early February before spring training as a method of creating interest in the team. Reds sign Orlando Cabrera to 1 year deal effectively setting their infield for next season. “Old Coot” Cabrera is entering his fourteenth year as a professional athlete. While not as strong defensively as Janish at short, he definitely brings more offense. The Reds, for a change, will have two experienced winners on the team with Rollins at third. Last season, Cabrera was credited with helping the Twins second half surge when he was traded from the Oakland A’s. The club also resigned Ramon Hernandez, who contributed at first base as well as behind the plate, until good old Dusty did his patented “let’s play him till he drops move.” Drop he did. If Reds General Manager Walt Jocketty continues to build a team that can compete, Dusty Baker will be the problem not the solution. If Harang never returns to form, you can add him to Baker’s history of trashing pitchers. Good news on the Reds youth front. Former first round choice Alonzo came in at 30 while Francisco barely cracked the list at 48. Both are infielders, first and third basemen respectively. With national signing day happening this Wednesday, February 3, as of our press deadline, Ohio State only had 18 verbal commitments with a couple blue chippers still on the board. Keep in mind the 18 include last year’s recruit, RB Carlos Hyde. Fellow recruit Roderick Smith (both are big backs) should make for interesting competition for Boom Herron. Herron’s biggest fans are his Mom and Bryant Billing; most others see him as a great MAC running back. Any way you try to sugar coat it, this could be one of Tressel’s worst recruiting efforts. Five star linebacker recruit Jordan Hicks from Lakota East bolted for Texas last week as the Buckeyes lost another blue chip recruit from Ohio. According to recruiting guru Bill Kurelic, top O-line recruit Seantrel Henderson is a 50/50 proposition for OSU and Glenville’s Antwan Anderson, who is a very soft West Virginia recruit, is now headed out to check out the illegal landscape at USC. Rounding out the list is Dominique Brown. Local Sports Page B2 s The Springfield Paper s February 3, 2010 Billing’s Mailbag: Women Is Sports Week? Huh? Bryant Billing By BRYANT BILLING Commentary SPRINGFIELD — Hello from John Detrick’s warm and cheerful Clark County, and welcome to Billing’s Mailbag! Billing’s Mailbag is a monthly column that comes out in the first edition of each month in which I respond to reader’s emails. If you have any questions, comments, or concerns, please feel free to email me at [email protected]. Let’s get to it! “Do you think whitewater rafting will go over in Springfield?” - Tina It’s not an accident I selected your email to be in this column, as I’ve often pondered this as well since the project began. I really think it depends what you mean by “go over.” It will be used and could create a revenue, yes, but I doubt it’s going to draw throbs of whitewater rafting fanatics. For those who aren’t aware of what Tina asked about, she is talking about the current ongoing project by the City of Springfield to turn Buck Creek into a whitewater rafting attraction. According to a press release sent to The Springfield Paper last November, the first phase of the project was completed in the fall of 2009, and the project should be finished this year. Now, while I have no plans of jumping in the Buck Creek anytime soon (unless I’m paid to do a story… huh guys? Good idea?) I enjoy watching redevelopment in Springfield get done. Cleaning up the Buck Creek and making it a potential tourist attraction can only help. So, yes, in that sense, it goes over, at least with me. “Why didn’t you have anything on women’s sports week last week?” - Bring your Sweetie to LEE’S Famous Recipe this VALENTINE’S DAY! Terry Myers Owner/Operator (937) 508-4600 Anonymous What? You mean to tell me that they have a women’s sports week? I had to go fact-check this claim, but low-andbehold, there was the top search result on Yahoo!: National Girls and Women In Sports DAY 2010. I placed the emphasis on “DAY,” as it was not a week-long celebration like Mr. Anonymous asserted. It takes place this Wednesday, February 3. To answer your question, I’d rather see blank space in the newspaper than something celebrating the most boring types of sports out there: sports played by women. I’ve got nothing against women’s sports, except, of course, the mind-numbing boredom. Especially in high school, women’s sports are miles behind that of the male-version counterpart sports. Girls basketball drags on and on, as there are a million and a half basketballs that go out-ofbounds. Girls soccer is, well… I’ve never actually witnessed a girls soccer HOME HEATING FUELS FUEL OIL AND PROPANE Automatic Deliver. Printed Meter Tickets 821 N. Belmont 323-7536 Trucks Watercrafts 3939 S. I can tolerate softball, but I openly admit to being scared of some of those softball players — especially when select softball players refer to me as “camera girl.” You’d be intimidated, too, if someone who is 6’2 with eyeblack on called you a girl, regardless of their sex. I just don’t feel comfortable watching volleyball — if you can’t wear shorts that small in school, you shouldn’t be able to wear them in an athletic event. And cheerleading isn’t a sport. I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: this is a business. Newspapers need to go off of the racks. I’ve been to girls basketball games and covered them before — most of the time, the host school will only pull down one side of the bleachers for a game. In my experience, 500 is a big crowd for a girls basketball game. A Northwestern at Greenon boys basketball game would draw more than that. There is still sports news on girls’ sports in this section. In fact, there will be a feature on a girls basketball player in the February 17 edition! But let’s get real: can you name one WNBA team? “Thanks for posting the live updates you do on your twitter page. I can‘t always make it to the games, and it’s nice to have a way to get the latest… on the game” - Johnny Thanks for the compliment, Johnny! For the rest of the folks out there, I believe Johnny is talking specifically about the live updates I post during Springfield High basketball games, since the overwhelming majority of the updates on there are of Springfield High. For whatever it’s worth, I continually set ‘trends’ on twitter for basketball updates, Springfield High, ect. While I don’t exactly now how a trend is set on twitter, I think it says something. Or maybe not. Now to something in plain English: Johnny is just one of many people who thanked me for this in January. My guess is that some people don’t like going out in the cold, so they stay at home. Just a thought, but, if this is true, it’s time to get out and watch the Wildcats first hand! Springfield is 113 heading down the final stretch of the season, and the Wildcats could potentially grab a high as a third seed in the Dayton Division I sectionals. They’re an exciting team to watch, and they’re worth battling the elements to go see. On a side note, updates on all games I cover at posted on PendaSports. com and on my twitter page at www.twitter.com/ BBilling. I also encourage you to add the new official twitter account of The Springfield Paper sports department at www.twitter.com/TSPsports. KIRK CAMERON Kirk Cameron is best known as the lovable teen heartthrob Mike Seaver, of the award winning series Growing Pains. He entertained audiences worldwide as the charming troublemaker. He is also known to many Christians as “Buck Williams” from the Left Behind films - based on the NY Times runaway best selling novels by Tim LaHaye and Jerry Jenkins. But much more noteworthy than his acting career was his conversion to Christianity. Kirk was not raised in a church-going home and describes himself as a devout atheist from a very young age. WARREN BARFIELD North Carolina-born singer/songwriter Warren Barfield is on a mission to make the truly important things important again in his life. Things like faith, love, marriage, children, truth, and with his songs, he challenges us all to do the same. Martin Luther King Jr. said, “If a man hasn’t discovered something that he will die for, he isn’t fit to live.” Warren has found those things in his faith, his wife, and his belief in love. “These are the things I would die for; things I will wake up every morning and spend my day fighting for.” Worth Fighting For, Barfield’s third record, out May 20, 2008 on Essential Records, expresses a vulnerability and passion born out of the realization of how much life passes by without intentionally living, how little we invest in those we love, and how often we settle for the status quo. “My wife is my best friend, who I love dearly, and she loves me,” he says. “But isn’t it fascinating that two people who love each other so much can cut one another so deeply? When you let issues build up in a marriage, the smallest thing can trigger a war, and pretty soon you can lose sight of your love and commitment to one another. We had a night where something as trivial as spilled pretzels forced into the open things we had left unsaid. Once everything had calmed down, I wrote this song. In that moment, I fully realized my duty, as my wife’s husband, was to wrap my arms around her, to love her more than my pride, more than my desire to be ‘right,’ and to find a way to move through life’s good and bad times together. That will be a struggle at times, but love is worth the fight.” For those who have lost or feel they’re losing the battle in relationships and in life, the poignant ballad “Drop The World” is a prayer for comfort and healing. “We’ve been taught our whole lives that God holds the whole world in His hands,” Barfield explains. “There’s an epidemic of brokenness in our world, people hurting so much, they need someone to drop everything and hold them. My heart is broken for people whose marriages have ended, people who’ve lost people they love, and I believe Christ is broken for them. He knows our deepest secrets and loves us anyway. We don’t have to hide our pain from Him.” Without an ounce of judgment, Worth Fighting For strikes a delicate balance between hope and hurting, between love and loss, infused with a heavy dose of encouragement and grace. Songs like “God Believes In You,” “The One Thing” and “Say It With Your Life” reinforce Barfield’s confidence in God’s passion for His children. “We can run away from our problems, our fears; we can run out of money, run out of hope, but the one thing I can’t run out of is God’s love,” Barfield says of “The One PO850 Leather Heated Seats $14,495 New Carlisle Chrysler Jeep Dodge 235 571 70 580 NORTH MAIN STREET, NEW CARLISLE, OHIO 45344 Offered in 6 weekly sessions, Why Knot? equips men with the important attitudes and skills they need to sustain a long, happy and stable marriage to the mother of their children. When everyone and everything runs away, God is running to us.” These are the lessons that cannot be imparted by parents or college professors. These are truths learned in the trenches, carved out on the journey, forged in fires of failure and forgiveness. Truths only time and experience can teach. Barfield’s “Love is not a Fight” song was a hit single last year as part of the Fireproof movie (starring Kirk Cameron). FEED YOUR FAITH A few years ago, Mike Williams – a Blount County resident with a heart for people who are struggling – started Feed Your Faith. Rick Laney joined him as Feed Your Faith’s marketing and promotions director three years ago. The Feed Your Faith concept was simple; bring in Christian speakers, authors, singers and music groups to help Christians grow in their faith and, at the same time, raise money for those who are less fortunate. Unlike some nonprofit and charity groups, Feed Your Faith has virtually no overhead expenses – so once the cost of bringing the event to town is covered, proceeds go directly to local charities. To date, Feed Your Faith has worked with nationally known writers and music groups including Lee Strobel (former legal editor of the Chicago Tribune and author of The Case for Christ), author Mark Middleberg, DecembeRadio, Decyfer Down and Sanctus Real (Dove Award winning Christian Rock and Alternative band), needtobreath and Sarah Reeves.
