Volume 32, Issue 3 The Witness March 2014 St. Margaret's Episcopal Church Dear Friends, It’s hard to believe that the season of Lent is upon us. (Didn’t we just have Christmas? Where did the time go?) We will conclude the season of Epiphany with our annual Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper on March 4th at 6:30 pm. Lent begins with Ash Wednesday on March 5th and we will have a service at 7 pm that evening. We continue to meet on Wednesday evenings for a Lenten program followed by a soup supper. Those evenings begin on Wednesday, March 12th at 6:30 pm. Special points of interest: Pancake Supper Ash Wednesday Lenten/Holy Week Schedules Photos We are using a video series called Final Words From the Cross by Adam Hamilton, a Methodist Minister. Each week, we will watch and discuss a 10-minute presentation by Pastor Hamilton. After our discussion, we will read together the service of Compline then enjoy soup. Here is the schedule of videos: Oyster Roast Inside this issue: ECW Liturgy I’m really excited at this year’s program which looks at the last words of Jesus. The last words of Jesus are complied from all four gospels. Together they offer a powerful and moving picture of what was on His mind and heart as He died. From these words, we learn something about Jesus and the words also show us how we should direct our hearts. 2 2 Senior Warden 2 Photos 3&4 Lenten Services 5 Youth 5 Oyster Roast 6 Birthdays & Anniversaries 6 March 12th “Father, forgive them.” March 19th “Today you will be with me in Paradise.” March 26th “Behold your son … Behold your mother.” April 2nd “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” April 9th “I thirst.” April 16th “It is finished … Into your hands I commit my spirit.” Weekly Gospel Readings for March March 2, 2014 March 9, 2014 March 16, 2014 March 23, 2014 March 30, 2014 The Last Sunday after Epiphany The First Sunday in Lent The Second Sunday in Lent The Third Sunday in Lent The Fourth Sunday in Lent Matthew 17:1-9 Matthew 4:1-11 John 3:1-17 John 4:5-42 John 9:1-41 Page 2 The Witness I think this program will be inspiring to us as we prepare ourselves for Easter. Please sign-up to bring soup there is a sheet is in the connector. We need a couple of soups each night. In the past, these have been delicious - I’m already looking forward to them! I hope you will take on the discipline of attending our Lenten program this year. I think we will enjoy considering these different perspectives on familiar words. Faithfully, ECW I had the pleasure of representing the ECW at our annual vestry retreat in February. We didn’t solve all the issues but we definitely came home with hope. I enjoyed meeting Geoff Taylor and look forward to working with him the future. Thank you for this opportunity. One thing Geoff talked about was how quickly we love to give suggestions when someone asks about a restaurant, or a movie, or a roofer, but we are not so forth coming when someone asks about church. This really struck home when before church I heard several members talking about a local restaurant. Wow, if we could generate that same excitement about St. Margaret’s as I heard expressed by these members we would have every chair filled on Sunday morning. As we enter into the Lenten season I ask you to consider a change. Instead of denying yourself something (chocolate, caffeine, etc.) why not take on something new. Set aside time each day to pray for our church and our church family. Upcoming dates Saturday March 15 – Women’s Prayer Breakfast at the Grapevine @ 9 a.m. Sunday March 23 – ECW meeting after service Shrove Tuesday All You Can Eat Pancake Supper Date: March 4th Time: 6:30 p.m. Cost: $3.00/child $5.00/adult $15.00/family Save the date and make plans to attend one of the tastiest fellowship suppers of the year! St. Margaret’s will begin our Lenten observance with the Ash Wednesday Service on March 5th at 7pm. Each following Wednesday in Lent we will enjoy a soup supper beginning at 6:30pm and celebrate the Holy Eucharist and the last words of Jesus. As in the past, we are asking that each week different families volunteer to provide the meal. If your family would like to volunteer, please look for the Lenten Soup Supper Sign-up in the connector. Saturday, March 22nd Lent, the approximately forty days between Ash Wednesday and Palm Sunday, is a period of repentance, moderation and spiritual discipline. You may invite your friends and relatives to join us. Parents are encouraged to join in. Permission sheets are provided on the youth bulletin board for parents. If you have any questions please see Diane Sharick. Join us for the Imposition of Ashes on March 5th, and each Wednesday during Lent as part of your prepara- Thank You, tion, in penitence and prayer, as we look forward to Diane Sharick the Glorious Easter morning. HAVE YOU EVER WONDERED........ 1. How does that Holy Sacrament (Communion bread) appear each Sunday? St Margaret's is one of a very few churches that does not use wafers. Thanks to the following dedicated team, we have freshly baked bread: Chrystel Gilbert Christine Goodrow Will Hawkins Marietta Kolinchak 2. Who supplies seed and fills our bird feeders? Thanks to Dave Collins and Janice Ownbey, we have been able to feed our feathered friends during the bitterly cold weather this year. THANK YOU, GOOD STEWARDS OF ST. MARGARET'S!
