Bunco Raises $95202
Yes, someone gave their
two-cents
worth toward the Bunco
event
on
September 17, at St.
James
Parrish. Special thanks
to Darleen
Sandheinrich,
Shirley
Rinck, Sheila
Campe, Bonnie Mueller and all those who brought
desserts, served desserts, donated bunco prizes and
ensured the event went smoothly. $952.02 will
purchase 2380 cartons of milk at $.40 per carton.
That should keep Ralph “The Milkman” Schneider
It seems like September was
gone in a blink of an eye. I had
end of month and year closings
along with end of quarter
reports and three webinars
(meetings you attend by way of
computer) in two days so if you
have been here I’m sure you
have noticed the craziness.
Now we will settle down and
enjoy the beautiful fall we are
Patty Evansco
having. Do you enjoy the cool
nights as much as I do? In a few weeks we will
begin Open Enrollment season and I’m asking if
anyone needs information and assistance to please
call for an appointment and I will be glad to help
you. Jamie and Angela who used to help me out
will no longer be coming here, unfortunately their
funding was cut and I am happy to report that even
though one door closed another has opened and
they are in new jobs they enjoy.
I have been getting updates and the news seems
uplifting that there might be a State budget within
a few weeks. Thank you for all your generous
donations. This has helped us to keep going
financially. Our biggest expense is food, so you can
help by remembering to make a reservation so we
don’t order too much food and have to pay for left
overs.
The Department of Transportation told me now our
new bus will be here in 5 to 7 months. I was glad to
hear that even though it is going to be longer than I
thought, at least we are still getting it. I’m happy!
September is National Fall Awareness Month so
please watch your step!
If you know of anyone that would be interested in
working as a personal assistant to seniors, please
contact me.

Do you shop on Amazon? Now there is a new
version of the company's website –
smile.amazon.com – the company will donate
0.5% of the purchase price to charity.
Customers pick their charity through the new
website and there are almost one million to
choose from, including Sandra Marie
Bereitschaft Foundation (supports Millstadt,
Freeburg and Smithton Meals on Wheels
program).
There is no cap on the amount Amazon will
donate and almost every physical product
sold by the company is eligible, which means
tens of millions of items. Digital goods are not
included, but that may come in the future.
Everything else about the Amazon online
shopping experience stays the same,
including the shopping cart, wish lists and
shipping options. The prices will also be the
same, so these donations will suck some of
the profit out of each sale Amazon makes
through the program.

Knowing who is at lunch at the Center is important for a number of reasons. First of all it’s good to keep track so if someone
isn’t there for a few days we can contact them to make sure
everything is ok. Second, when you sign in and are registered
we are able to submit your name to receive our grant money to
help pay for the meals. A way to look at it is that if you aren’t
registered and signed in we can’t send a bill for your lunch to
the Area Agency on Aging.

Millstadt History
Article taken from the April 30, 1918, Belleville News
Democrat.
Millstadt Chooses Native Indian Doctor
as Legislator-First American Judge.
Navajo Ben dispenser of Indian medicines, is now
Justice of the Peace of Millstadt township.
The Indian was honored by the citizens of Millstadt
at the last township election and according to latest
reports has qualified for the office and the honors
which go with it.
Navaho Ben and his family have been residents of
Millstadt for a little more than a year and during that
time he and his wife have been peddling patent
medicine all over the county.
His Millstadt neighbors evidently thought well of his
legal ability and when after the recent election, the
ballots were counted, it was found that Millstadt had
a full blooded American for its law dispenser. It is
believed to be an absolute certainty that this is the
first time that a descendent of the original Americans
has been so honored in St. Clair County.
Judge Navaho Ben is well known in this city. He
appeared in a local justice court some time ago to
represent the defendant in some case which was
however decided against him

Do You Remember?
By Wib Miller
I recently was thinking about my 80 plus years
around and in Millstadt.
I thought about past businesses that are no longer
here. I have compiled a list of forty five. I’m sure
this list could be longer but I thought 45 was enough.
Some are easy and others make you think. Where
were they? What’s in that location now? Some
buildings are gone and some are still here under a
different name and business. See how many of these
you can remember.
Where was the Love Building moved from and where
did they move it?

Educational, Recreational and Cultural Programs
Enrich The Lives Of Elders and The Community
Funding for (Grantee) is received from the United
States Administration for Community Living, the
Illinois Department on Aging, and the AgeSmart
Community Resources. (Grantee) does not
discriminate in admission to programs or activities
or treatment of employment in programs or
activities in compliance with State and Federal
Statues. If you feel you have been discriminated
against, you have the right to file a complaint with
the AgeSmart Community Resources by calling
618-222-2561 or 800-326-3221
Meals on Wheels One of the Center’s most important programs, the Meals on
Wheels program provides daily meals to people who have difficulty getting out of the
house and/or cooking for themselves. Not only are we able to supply necessary food,
but the driver delivering the meal is able to ascertain how the client is getting along
and share some companionship. We have a number of folks dedicated to providing
these services. They give freely of their time and energy to deliver the meals, make
contact with the recipient and report back to the Center. The majority of the
“regular” drivers volunteer one day per week and most have said it is highly
rewarding for them.
Lunch Program Lunch is served Monday through Friday at 12 noon. You must be 60
years of age or older to qualify for this program. It is appreciated that if you want
lunch you call the center by 3:00 pm in order to sign up for lunch on the following
day. When you come in you may sign yourself up for the next day. If you like, you
may sign up for the entire week or month. If you know that you can not make it and
you have signed up, please call and let us know that you will not be here and tell us
when you will be back for lunch. If you have any questions concerning the lunch
program please contact Patty Evansco at 476-3731.
All Lunches are Catered from the Millstadt IGA,
West End Bar & Grill and
Breadoux Pizza from Millstadt

OCTOBER 2015
Pictures From The Past
A FINISHED BATCH IS CARRIED FROM THE COOKHOUSE BY Mr. and Mrs. Stiffler. After it has
thoroughly cooled it will be placed in containers and
sold at the rate of 50 cents per pound. Although they
grow only a small crop of sorghum on their own land,
the Stifflers produce molasses for a number of other
growers.
FALL AND HARVEST TIME are synonymous across the
nation but there is an even surer sigtn for residents
of the Floraville area. When stacks ofr sorghum cane
appear in the yard at the Steve Stiffler home on the
Floraville-Millstadt Road and smoke appears from
the chimney of an outbuilding, you can be sure that
summer is over. Harvey Reichert of Millstadt, who
helps during this season, adds to a stack of fresh-cut
cane while Eric VanBuren, 3 1/2, samples the
sweetness.
IN SMALL NUMBERS, lengths of the cane are handfed into a crusher by Mrs. Helen VanBuren and her
husband, Harvey, have taken over the sorghum
operation which was initiated by the Stiffler family in
1944 and is one of the last still in operation in the
area. Stiffler’s sorghum molasses is not to be
confused with the low-quality “blackstrap” molasses
which is still popular as a supplement for animal
feed.
RECYCLING PROGRAM
Recycling continues the first Saturday of every
month at the Township Garage on East Harrison
Street. Volunteers will remove the recyclables, glass,
cans, paper, cardboard and number 1 and 2 plastics
from your vehicle from 8:00 am to 10:00 am. This
program is available for all residents of Millstadt
Township and the Village.
