Dr.B.V.K.Bhagwan and other scientists explained about the ongoing research and tissue culture banana production activities of HRS, Kovvur. 1 Andhra Kesari Tanguturi Prakasam Pantulu Jayanthi 143th Jayanthi of Andhra kesari Sri Tanguturi Prakasam Pantulu was celebrated at Administrative block of Dr.YSRHU and HC&RI, VR Gudem on 23rd August, 2015. Visit of MLA, Parchuru Sri. Yeluri Sambasiva Rao garu, MLA, Parchuru, basically a post graduate in horticulture and a progressive farmer visited Dr.YSRHU Campus, Venkataramannagudem on 25th July, 2015. He interacted with Dr.B.srinivasulu, Registrar, Dr.J.Dilip Babu, Director of Research, Dr. M.B.Nageswara Rao, DIIP and Dr.D.Srihari, Dean of Student Affairs and visited KVK Farm, Research plots at HRS, VRGudem and HC&RI, VRGudem. Rythu Kosam project Dr.J.Dilip Babu, Director of Research, Dr. R.V.S.K.Reddy, Director of Extension, Dr.B.V.K.Bhagwan, Zonal Head(Coastal Zone –I), Dr. L.Naram Nanidu, Zonal Head (Coastal Zone–II), Dr. K. T. Venkataramana, Zonal Head(Rayalaseema Zone) attended workshop for consortium team members of ‘Rythu kosam project’ at ICRISAT, Hydearabad on 20th August, 2015. Seventy five participants including scientists of Dr.YSRHU, ANGRAU and ICRISAT, representatives of NGOs attended this meeting and participated in group discussion intended to transform the agriculture and allied sector through development of a new primary sector. Orientation programme on RTI Act One day orientation programme on RTI Act, 2005 was organized for all the PIOs and APIOs of various Colleges, Research Stations, KVKs of Dr.YSRHU at Examination Hall, HC&RI, Tadepalligudem. Volume-I, Issue - 7 Dr.YSRHU e-Newsletter 2 15th –31st August, 2015 Education P.G. Admissions A total of 51 students (36 regular, 4 other state, 10 ICAR and 1 in-service) admitted into M.Sc. (Hort) programme at two constituent colleges of Dr.YSRHU. A total of 9 students (6 regular and 3 in-service) admitted into Ph.D(Hort) programme at HC&RI, VRGudem. Three new PG programmes viz. M.Sc in Horticultural Entomology, M.Sc in Horticultural Pathology, M.Sc(Hort) in Post Harvest Technology are initiated in Dr.YSRHU from the academic year 2015-16. Further, M.Sc. in Horticultural Entomology and M.Sc. Horticulture in Post Harvest Technology are being offered at HC & RI, V.R.Gudem. M.Sc. Horticultural Pathology and M.Sc (Hort) in Post Harvest Technology are being offered at HC&RI, Anantharajupeta. Polytechnic admissions A total of 103 students got admitted into Diploma in Horticulture in four constituent colleges of Dr.YSRHU and 42 students admitted into newly established private polytechnics (affiliated polytechnics of Dr.YSRHU) for the year 2015-16. Degrees awarded Mr. A. Harshavardhan was awarded Ph.D(Horti.) degree in Fruit Science, Ms.T. Suseela was awarded Ph.D(Horti.) degree in Floriculture and Landscape Architecture, Ms. K. Naga Durga Bhavani was awarded M. Sc(Horti.) degree in Fruit Science and Ms. B. Anitha was awarded M. Sc(Horti.) degree in Plantation, Spices, Medicinal and Aromatic Crops from HC&RI, VR Gudem. Theses submitted Ms. Y. Pratyusha Bhanu submitted thesis as a part of fulfilment of M.Sc(Horti.) programme on “Studies on effect of rhizome size and portrays raised seedlings on growth and yield of Turmeric (Curcuma longa L) .” Ms. S. Suguna Krishna submitted thesis as a part of fulfilment of M.Sc(Horti.) programme on “Effect of time etiolation and IBA concentrations on rooting of semi hardwood cuttings of Tamarind (Tamarindus Indica L) .” Ms. A. Neeraja submitted thesis as a part of fulfilment of M.Sc(Horti.) programme on “Effect of different planting material and N P and K on growth, yield and quality of Turmeric (Curcuma longa L) .” Ms. L. Vanaja submitted thesis as a part of fulfilment of M.Sc (Horti.) programme on “Studies on performance of wedge grafting time and growing conditions in guava (Psidium guajava L) .” Guest Lecture Dr. C.V. Sarveswara Sarma, President, Konaseema Science Parishad, Amalapuram delivered a guest lecture on “How to achieve goals” to UG students on 17th August, 2015 and guest lecture on “Development of Research Skills” to PG students on 18th August, 2015 at HC&RI, VR Gudem. Yeluri Sambasiva Rao, MLA, Parchuru visited all the laboratories and interacted with faculty members at HC&RI, VR Gudem on 22nd August, 2015. Dr. D.K. Sharma, Director, CSSRI, Karnal visited HC&RI, VR Gudem along with Dr.T.Damodaran, Sr.Scientist (Horti.) and interacted with staff and students about the development and reclamation of saline and sodic soils on 27th August, 2015. Exposure Visit Dr. Vijaya Kumar, Assistant Professor (Veterinary Science) arranged an exposure visit to first year B.Sc(Horti.) students on 19th August, 2015 to show various types of cow breeds and cows at Dwaraka Tirumula . Research Collaborative research programmes Dr.D.K.Sharma, Director, ICAR-CSSRI, Karnal and Dr. T.Damodaran, Senior Scientist, ICAR-CSSRI RRC, Lucknow visited HRS, Kovvur on 27th August, 2015 to discuss about the collaborative research programme to be carried out for inducing tolerance to Fusarium wilt in banana and explained the programme to be implemented. Initiation of research on vegetables at HRS, V.R.Gudem Research on vegetable crops was initiated at Horticultural Research Station, VRGudem by collecting germplasm of tomato, brinjal, spine gourd, dolichos bean etc., from NBPGR, AVRDC and from different parts of Andhra Pradesh. In addition to above research paid up trials were also initiated in corps like brinjal, tomato, cucumber, ridge gourd, bottle gourd, cluster bean, cabbage, cauliflower etc. Volume-I, Issue - 7 Dr.YSRHU e-Newsletter 4 15th –31st August, 2015 New orange fleshed sweet potato genotype A new orange fleshed sweet potato genotype was identified by Dr. P. Ashok, Scientist (Hort.), AICRP on Tuber Crops, HRS, VRGudem from the open pollinated seedlings raised from poly cross progenies of white and orange fleshed sweet potato genotypes. This new genotype is having purple main vine and has luxuriant growth habit compared to the variety Kiran. The average leaf width ranged from 12 to 14.5 cm. This genotype is under evaluation for its yield performance along with multiplication of planting material. Germplasm collection Dr. G. Narasimha Murthy, Scientist (Hort.), AICRP on Palms, HRS, Pandirimamidi participated in joint survey for collection of palmyrah germplasm along with other AICRP coordinating centres in Medinipur district of West Bengal from 18th to 21st August, 2015 and collected 5 different dwarf palmyrah accessions which are distinct and showing variability in fruit size and colour. Dr. K.Giridhar, Scientist (Hort.), HRS, Lam collected turmeric germplasm from HRS, Kammarapalli on 20th August, 2015. Sri.M.Ravindra Babu, Scientist (Hort), HRS, VRGudem visited Central Horticultural Experimental Station (CHES), Bhubaneswar on 12th August, 2015 and collected of germplasm and planting material of teasel gourd, ivy gourd, pointed gourd and spine gourd. Technology intervention Turmeric is grown extensively in High Altitude and Tribal (HAT) Zone of Visakhapatnam district. Most of the tribal farmers are cultivating local strains of turmeric in small holdings of 10-15 cents with a crop period of 2-3 years under shifting cultivation with low productivity of 1-2 tonnes of fresh rhizomes per acre. Turmeric cultivar Roma with a crop duration of 9 months was introduced by HRS, Chintapalli and recorded higher yield of fresh rhizomes during last year. The technology was well accepted by the tribal farmers and seed multiplication was taken up under seed village programme to expand the area under this variety. Survey of Sweet orange orchards Dr. L. Mukundalakshmi, Scientist (Hort), Smt. G. Sarada, Scientist (Ento) and Dr. T. Rajasekharam, Scientist (Pl.Path.) CRS, Tirupati surveyed sweet orange gardens in Pulivendula and Thonduru mandals of Kadapa district on 27th August, 2015 and recorded the pest and disease incidence. It was noticed that the psylla infestation on new flush was very severe (60-70%) and recommended the control measures. Volume-I, Issue - 7 Dr.YSRHU e-Newsletter 5 15th –31st August, 2015 Extension Tribal sub plan A training programme was conducted on “Integrated nutrient management in cashew and cotton” by KVK, VRGudem at Kamaikunta village of Buttaigudem mandal on 22nd August, 2015. Sri R.Suryanarayana, Project Officer, ITDA, K.R.Puram participated as guest of honour and explained about collaborative activities of KVK and ITDA for the improvement of living standards of tribal families. Dr.RVSK Reddy, Director of Extension explained about the importance of soil health cards and to calculate the dosage of fertilizers and know the soil health status to improve the soil quality by the suggestions made in the card based on crop specific recommendations. He explained various KVK activities under TSP during 2015-16 followed by distribution of soil health cards and fertilizers to selected farmers under TSP programme. In this connection, method demonstration was conducted on “Stem Application in Cotton” i.e application of Monocrotophos @ 25ml + 75ml of water (1 : 4 ratio) for the control of sucking pest complex without damaging the natural enemies in cotton fields. The demonstration was organized by Sri Ch.Kiran Kumar, SMS(SSAC), KVK, Venkataramannagudem and Dr.Phani Kumar, Co-ordinator, DAATTC, Eluru Feasibility study on Introduction of Black Bengal Goat in agency area Black Bengal Goat is a small sized breed with tight structure whose adult male weighs 25 to 30 kg and female weighs 20 to 25 kg. This goat breed attains sexual maturity quickly and the female goat becomes pregnant twice in a year giving birth to 3- 4 baby goats every time. This breed can adopt to various environments easily and it is having high disease resistance. It produces high quality meat and skin. KVK, Pandirimamidi is conducting demonstrations on “Black Bengal Goat” in Rampachodavaram division of East Godavari district with the financial support from ATMA and ITDA. Each Unit consists of 3 animals (1 male and 2 females) with a unit cost of Rs.6,000/- out of which ATMA is providing Rs.4,000/- and ITDA is providing Rs.2,000/- to conduct twenty demonstrations. Committee members visited “Black Bengal Goat Units ” for breed selection at KVK, Kalavacherla and Private units rearing this breed under supervision of KVK, Kalavacherla, Rajahmundry on 21st August, 2015. Trainings undergone Dr.E.Karunasree, Programme Coordinator, KVK, Venkataramannagudem participated in three days training programme on “Processing and Value Addition” at KVK, Utukuru, Kadapa from 23rd to 25th August, 2015. Volume-I, Issue - 7 Dr.YSRHU e-Newsletter 6 15th –31st August, 2015 ITDA Governing body meeting Dr.A.Srinivas, Programme Coordinator, KVK, Pandirimamidi attended ITDA-Governing body meeting at Rampachodavaram, East Godavari dist. on 20th August, 2015 as a member and explained about activities of Krishi Vigyan Kendra in the agency area for promoting agriculture, horticulture and allied sectors in collaboration with ITDA, ATMA, DSR, DMR, TSP and line departments by providing quality plant material, seed, poultry, livestock, fisheries and women empowerment activities which will improve the socio-economic status of tribal families in the agency areas. Sri Arun Kumar, IAS, ITDA Chairman & District Collector, Sri K.V.N.Chakradhara Babu, IAS, Project Officer-ITDA, Zilla Parisad Chairman, MLAs, all district officers and other governing body members attended this programme. General Field and diagnostic visits Dr.K. Subramanyam, Principal Scientist (Pl.Pathology & Head, HRS, Mahanandi visited pomegranate orchard on 18th August, 2015 at Horticultural Research Station, Anantharajupet. Dr. D. Srinivasa Reddy, Scientist (Ento), HRS, Anantharajupeta visited banana fields (var.Grand Naine) at B. Kamapalli village of Obulavarapalli mandal on 19th August, 2015 and observed “Erwinia rot” incidence and recommended drenching of bleaching powder @ 25g/litre of water. Dr. D. Srinivasa Reddy, Scientist (Ento), HRS, Anantharajupeta visited Rayalacheruvu village of Chittoor District on 23rd August, 2015 and found the incidence of vegetative malformation in mango cv. Banginapalli and recommended spraying of Dicofol 18EC @ 2ml/L and NAA @ 200 ppm and also removal of severely infested twigs. Incidence of rhizome rot in turmeric was observed on 26th August, 2015 at Y. Kota village and recommended drenching of Metalaxyl 4% + Mancozeb 64%WP@ 3g/L of water and also recommended application of micronutrients to overcome deficiency. Dr.C.Venkata Ramana, Scientist (Hort) participated in diagnostic field visit on 19th August, 2015 in Vejendla, Narakoduu & Gundavaram villages of Chebrolu mandal to ascertain the reason for premature ripening and yellowing of fruits in bitter gourd along with Horticultural Officer Smt. D.P. Kalyani. The main reason for premature ripening is inadequate pollination and heavy bearing. Spraying of Boron @ 1 g/l is recommended for increasing the pollen germination and pollen tube growth. Volume-I, Issue - 7 Dr.YSRHU e-Newsletter 7 15th –31st August, 2015 A diagnostic visit to young papaya garden was conducted by Dr.E.Karuna Sree, PC, KVK, VRGudem and Dr. P.Rama Devi, Scientist (Pl. Path.), HRS, VRGudem on 27th August, 2015 and observed basal stem rot and mealy bug incidence and recommended soil drenching with COC @ 3g/lt for the control of basal stem rot and spraying of profenophos @2 ml/lt along with neem oil 1500 PPM @ 3ml/L for the control of mealy bug Training programmes Dr. L. Mukundalakshmi, Scientist (Hort.), Smt. G. Sarada, Scientist (Ento) and Dr. T. Rajasekharam, Scientist (Pl. Path.) attended training programme in Kadapa on 27th August, 2015 organized by Department of Horticulture as resource persons and educated the farmers on various plant production and protection techniques in sweet orange cultivation. Dr. L. Mukundalakshmi, Scientist (Hort) attended a training programme at KVK, Kalikiri on 31th August. 2015 and delivered a lecture on “Production technology of coconut” Dr.C.Sarada, Senior Scientist(Hort) attended a training programme at Guntur on 19th August, 2015 on “Varshabhava paristhithulu – prathyamnaya pantala saagu” organized by Retired Officers Association Dr.C.Sarada, Senior Scientist(Hort) attended a training programme at Yedlapadu on 21st August, 2015 and delivered a lecture on “Good agricultural practices in chilli” organized by Spices Board Dr. L.Naram Naidu, Principal Scientist (Hort) attended a training programme and delivered a lecture on “Production technology of chilli and contingency plan” in rythu chaitanya sadassu at Chilakaluripet organized by AMC & Rotary club of Chilakaluripet and RARS, Lam. Sri Prattipati Pullarao, Agrl. Minister presided the meeting on 24th August, 2015 Dr.C.Venkata Ramana, Scientist(Hort) and Dr. K.Giridhar, Scientist (Hort) attended field visit cum training programme on 26th August, 2015 to Field Officers of Spices Board at HRS, Lam Farmers’ visit Dr.S.Surya Kumari, Principal Scientist (Hort), Dr.C.Sarada, Senior Scientist(Hort), Smt.T.Vijaya Lakshmi, Scientist(Path), Dr.C.Venkata Ramana, Scientist(Hort) organised a field visit cum training programme to the farmers of Jesus welfare of Rural Development Society, Zaheerabad on spices and vegetable crops at HRS, Lam. Radio and TV Programmes Dr. A Sujatha, Associate Dean, Horticultural College and Research Institute, Venkataramannagudem has given Radio Talk on “Pandlathotallo Sasyarakshana” in PANTASEEMALU programme at All India Radio, Vijayawada on 25th August, 2015.
