INTRODUCTION: TO NUNA TRAINING TECHNOLOGIES
Nuna Training Technologies (NTT) a subsidiary of Nuna Logistics Limited is 100% Canadian
owned and operated providing full service Simulator and field based training as well as a full
range of field training options including program development and contract training.
Nuna Logistics is 51% Inuit owned and qualifies as a “northern company” under the Inuit
Impact and Benefits Agreements. It was formed in 1993 and is a Federal registered company
with offices in Vancouver, BC; Edmonton, AB; Yellowknife, NT; Cambridge Bay, NU; and Prince
Albert, SK. The ownership of the company consists of Nunasi Corporation 25.5%, Kitikmeot
Corporation 25.5%, and the Management Group 49%. .

situated in Northern locations and environments, by utilizing classroom, simulator and “In the
seat” field training methodologies.
Focus: To enhance the success of the training program by providing training in or near the
impacted area in an environment that is familiar to the people and culture of the area, reducing
costs and increasing training retention and sustainability.
Scope: To provide specific training addressing cultural, industrial and economic needs of an
impact area. Training is specific to the construction and mining industries for residents of the
impact area and would focus on requirements by legislation, Acts and Best Practice for industry.

NTT Profile
The value of partnerships in any training initiative will be the core element for success. Various
levels of participation are required by the impact community, government, First Nations and
industry partners. Nuna Training Technologies is recognized across Canada by many mining
companies and has worked for and in partnership with all levels of government, institutes,
community and aboriginal/First Nation groups.

Simulator Based Training
Nuna Training Technologies took delivery of the “first” Canadian-owned heavy equipment
open pit mine equipment simulator in 2001. We currently operate 2 complete units with a full
range of simulated equipment such as haul truck, excavator, wheel loader, crawler dozer,
electric haul truck, rope shovel and hydraulic shovel. We have logged more time in direct
involvement with the Series II simulator than any other single person or group worldwide. The
programs presented in the simulator are OEM approved (approved by the original equipment
Manufacturer) Today there are 20 IT simulators in Western Canada 50% in the mining and earth
works industry and 50% in educational institutes.
Nuna Training Technologies and management are recognized across North America as one of
the leaders in simulator based training as well as conventional training.
The philosophy of training is to improve safety and performance of all equipment operators,
experienced or people completely new to industry. Simulators have also proven to be the best
training tool available for entry level training of new equipment operators as well as ongoing
safety and refresher training.

Don’t be fooled by the skeptics Simulator training works. The aviation industry and the military
have used simulation for many years. Every major airline uses simulators to train, retrain and
check out their pilots WHY NOT HEAVY EQUIPMENT OPERATORS. Currently there are 20 units
operating in Western Canada and the interest continues to grow.
Most of us have traveled by commercial airlines. Did you know that the crew flying the aircraft
you have traveled on likely received some of their training in a simulator along with conventional
training. Also did you know that the airline industry uses simulators for emergency response
training annually for their pilots. If you trust the simulator trained crew with your safety. Why

Industry has recognized that the best operator training is a combination of classroom and

In most cased people that do not recognize the value in simulator based training have not taken
the time to research the technology or have never been involved with a formal program.

SIMULATOR BASED PROGRAM CURRICULUM OVERVIEW
Start-Up Procedures
Objective: To familiarize student with manufacturers’ recommendations, relevant legislation
and site specific rules regarding safe and proper Start-Up procedures.
Each student will receive instruction and a demonstration of the correct Start-Up procedure for
each specific machine as recommended.
Each student will demonstrate an understanding of why the Start-Up procedure must be
followed when starting the machine.
Each student will demonstrate proficiency in following the recommended start-up procedure.
The student will be evaluated on this task and graded at the end of the program.
Pre Operation Checks
Objective: To familiarize student with manufacturers’ recommendations regarding safe and
proper Pre-Operational checks, relevant legislation and site specific rules.
The student will receive instruction and a demonstration of the correct Pre-Operational check
procedure for each specific machine.
The student will demonstrate an understanding of why the Pre-Operational checks must be
performed before operating the machine.
The student will demonstrate the ability to perform the Pre-Operational checks and explain to
the instructor what he/she is doing during the procedure. This will be an ongoing task in the
field .The student will be evaluated on this task and graded at the end of the program.

Directional and Braking Controls
Objective: To give the student a working knowledge and an understanding of how the machine
operates and the safe and proper procedures to enable them to control the speed and direction
of travel of the machine.
The student will receive instruction and a demonstration of the procedure for putting the
machine into motion. This would include the sounding of the horn before any machine
movement and checking that the area is clear of people, equipment and obstruction.
The student will receive instruction and a demonstration of the proper reversing procedures for
the machine. This would include the sounding of the horn before any machine movement and
checking that the area is clear of people, equipment and obstruction.
The student will receive instruction and a demonstration of the proper braking procedures for
the machine. This would include the use of both primary and secondary braking systems, as
well as the correct use of the parking brake.
The student will receive instruction and a demonstration of basic braking system maintenance
(draining moisture from reservoirs, etc.), an overview of the braking system major components
and any required braking system tests.
This will be an ongoing task .The student will be evaluated on this task and graded.

Steering
Objective: To give the student a working knowledge and an understanding of how the steering
system operates and the safe and proper procedures to enable them to maintain steering
control.
The student will receive instruction and demonstration of steering techniques, an overview of
the machine steering system major components, and any required steering tests.
This will be an ongoing task in the field .The student will be evaluated on this task and graded at
the end of the program.

Objective: To enable the student to safely and efficiently utilize the machine to its design
capability and productivity.
The student will receive instruction and demonstration of the loading techniques including load
placement, spotting at the loading device, load capacity and a review of hazards associated
with the loading operation. Including tire management at the loading point
The student will receive instruction on the proper use of ground engaging tools and standard
material handling techniques as it applies to the operation of the machine.
This will be an ongoing task in the field .The student will be evaluated on this task and graded at
the end of the program.
Hauling/Material Movement
Objective: To enable the student to safely and efficiently carry out the loading and hauling
tasks.
The student will receive instruction and demonstration of the hauling or material handling
techniques including load placement, spotting at the loading device.

Machine Capacity.
The student will review with the instructor the hazards associated with the hauling/ or material
handling operation. Including tire management on the haul road and material handling
techniques will also be covered.
The student will receive instruction and tips on driving or operating to site and/or road weather
conditions.
This will be an ongoing task in the field .The student will be evaluated on this task and graded at
the end of the program.
Dumping
Objective: To familiarize the student with safe and proper traffic patterns and dumping
procedures while ensuring to comply with all relevant legislation and site specific rules.
The student will receive instruction and demonstration on the dumping techniques of the
machine.
The student will review with the instructor hazards associated with the dumping operation.
Including tire management at the dump point and material handling techniques.
This will be an ongoing task in the field .The student will be evaluated on this task and graded at
the end of the program.

Objective: To increase and reinforce safety awareness for the student.
The student will receive instruction and demonstration on safe operating practices including
road conditions, night operations, responding to machine problems and responding to incidents
and accidents.
This will be an ongoing task in the field .The student will be evaluated on this task and graded at
the end of the program.
Emergency Response to machine problems (Only Available with Simulator Based Training)
Each operator will be tested in the simulator in the best response to the following emergencies.
Engine fires, brake failure, steering failure
Operator error report (Only Available with Simulator Based Training)
Each operator will be tested to the correct machine procedure including all OEM factory
recommendations and best practice in industry

Parking
Objective: To enable the student to be able to safely park and shut down the equipment
following all manufacturers’ recommendations and in compliance with all relevant legislation
and company rules.
The student will receive instruction and demonstration on safe and proper parking techniques
including machine cool down, locking out all controls, setting the park brake, lowering
attachments securing the machine
The student will review with the instructor the hazards associated with the parking the
machine.
This will be an ongoing task in the field .The student will be evaluated on this task and graded at
the end of the program.
It takes 3 days to get a new employee off to new start according to OEM standards and
industry BEST practice OR years to break bad habits developed by poor quality training.

Field Programs
NTT also provides “hands-on” field training to compliment simulator based training or as a
standalone program. We focus on what is “really” needed by the employer. NTT’s goal is to
give each new operator the knowledge necessary to succeed in today’s competitive market
resulting in improved cost performance in the field. We train according to the direct needs of
the community, impacted industry and culture. The new operator receives ongoing evaluation,
coaching and exposure to safe work practices. We provide training in all aspects of earthwork
and mining - from diamond drill helper training to large production equipment. NTT programs
can be specifically tailored to meet our client’s needs and demands.
If we can keep the front line supervisor happy the new employee gets to
keep their job.
Our field based programs are designed to engage the student full time with
limited “Observation time” Many companies cut costs by using
“Observation time” This works for the first day or two but after that point it
may be of little value. Do we wish to train for success or train for numbers.

FIELD BASED PROGRAM CURRICULUM OVERVIEW
Operators’ Rights and Responsibilities
Objective: To make the students aware of the rights and responsibilities of a heavy equipment
operator in today’s workplace
A brief overview of operator’s rights and responsibilities as legislated by various acts and
regulations focusing on safety.
A discussion of the additional responsibilities that may be required by specific workplace rules.
Machine Safety
Objective: To reinforce and increase safety awareness of many hazards associated with
machines.
A review of basic machine safety including and not limited to rotating parts, hot surfaces,
explosion, guarding, steps and ladder, mounting, dismounting and hazards associated with the
operation of heavy equipment.
All too often students are misled in regards to expectations. When we start a new career we
know what the prize is but we also need to know that it takes many years to achieve our
goal. Success is earned “NOT HANDED OUT” It takes years to become a successful
supervisor in the heavy equipment industry and we all will start at the bottom in entry level
positions. Students entering any new career must understand that it doesn’t happen
overnight. It takes commitment and hard work.

Objective: To comply with legislation regarding mobile equipment operation and to familiarize
the student with the machine they are required to operate
All equipment manufacturers recommend that all operators read and understand the
operator’s manual before operating any machine for the first time.
All students will read the manual for the specific machines they will be operating
All students will review with the instructor of the operator’s manual for the machines that they
will operate.
A quiz based on material in each manual must be completed by all students for each machine
operated.
Walk-Around Inspections
Objective: To meet powered mobile equipment legislation, site specific rules and to ensure
student has an understanding of the importance of making sure equipment is in safe working
order

The student will receive instruction and a demonstration of the Walk-Around inspection for
each machine group. Walk-around inspections are required by legislation and must be
performed daily by the operator prior to operating any machine.
The student will demonstrate an understanding of why the Walk- Around must be performed
before operating the machine.
Each student will demonstrate the ability to perform a Walk-Around Inspection and explain to
the instructor what he/she is looking for during the inspection.
This will be an ongoing task in the field .The student will be evaluated on this task and graded at
the end of the program.
Start-Up Procedures
Objective: To familiarize student with manufacturers’ recommendations, relevant legislation
and site specific rules regarding safe and proper Start-Up procedures.

Comments: This simulator based program based on the CAT M series grader simulator and the
Champion motor grader display allowing the student to become familiar with motor grader
controls for conventional and “Stick Steer” machines. Students receive instruction in common
terms, safety, components and walk around inspection.

Comments: This program is designed to get you the hands on experience.
Following industry standards. 8 hours hands on per student in the seat. 8 hours field

safety, components and walk around inspection.

Forklift Orientation
32 HOURS (4 days)

Comments: This program is designed to get you the hands on experience. Follows industry
standards for trainings. 8 hours hands on per student in the seat. 8 hours field observation and
16 hours classroom Based on recommendations of the Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM)
and industry Best Practice. Students receive instruction in common terms, safety, components
and walk around inspection.

Compact Equipment Orientation
80 HOURS (10 days)
4 TO 1 Student instructor ratio
4 students per program
Comments: This program focuses on smaller equipment used on many jobsites. The program
platform is base on the compact track excavator, Skid Steer loader, Compactor and forklift. The
program allows each student to receive approximately 10 hours with each machine group.
Approximately 40 hour hands on total time Classroom time based on recommendations of the
Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) and industry Best Practice. Students receive
instruction in common terms, safety, components and walk around inspection.

Our people: Nuna staff are seasoned veterans in the training industry. All our senior
management, instructors, trainers and administration have a minimum of 5 to 25 years in the
industry. Nuna Training Technologies has been in full time operation for the past 10 years. We
have logged training hours in every region in Canada. Our training staff are trained to MASHA
standards as well as PME trained.
All Nuna (NTT) trainers, instructors and management are expert in the field of training. Training
is our CORE service not a sideline. Our staff maintains direct contact with industry and
are current with industry requirements.
