Appliqué twelve quick and easy tea towels for your kitchen using Shapeplay templates. Appliqué Note: The appliqué method used by the designer on these tea towels was fusible web appliqué. The fusible web used was Soft Fuse by Shades. Appliqué shapes were then stitched down by machine using a blanket stitch. On the paper side of fusible web trace 1 (7 ½") oval shape and 8 (4 ½") leaf shapes. Rough cut shapes out and fuse to fabric, fusing oval shape to tan fabric and 8 leaf shapres to green fabric. Make sure to follow manufacturer's instructions for fusing. Using small, sharp scissors, cut out shapes on traced lines. Remove paper backing. Using the photograph as your guide, fuse pineapple and leaves to towel in the following order: pineapple, back leaf, leaves on either side, working forward to front leaf. Blanket stitch around all appliqué shapes using matching thread. You can do this by machine or hand. The towel in the photograph was machine stitched. 2 TEA TOWEL PATTERN FEBRUARY - CHERRIES Using Shapeplay Appliqué Size: 20" x 28" Rating: Easy INSTRUCTIONS 3 Supplies: □ Purchased tea towel, approximately 20 x 28 inches. □ 1 burgundy fat quarter or smaller scraps – cherries. □ 1 light brown fat quarter or smaller scraps - stems □ 1 green fat quarter or smaller scraps - leaves □ Shapeplay Templates 2" Circle 3" Leaf 4 ½" Leaf □ Fusible web. □ Pencil or pen for tracing templates □ Iron □ Sewing machine □ Matching burgundy, light brown, and green threads for blanket stitching on appliqué □ Sharp scissors Construction: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. On the paper side of fusible web trace 3 (2”) circles, 2 (3”) leaves, and 1 (4 ½”) leaf. Rough cut shapes out and fuse the three circles to the burgundy fabric, the two (3”) leaves to the green fabric and the one (4 ½”) leaf to the light brown fabric. Make sure to follow the manufacturer’s instructions for fusing. Using small, sharp scissors cut out shapes on traced lines. Cut three stems from the light brown leaf by cutting approximately 1/4” away from the long curved edge, following the curve as you cut. 6. Remove the paper backing from all shapes. Using the photograph as a guide lay out the shapes on the towel making sure the stem ends are under the leaves and the cherries. Trim the stems to the length desired. Fuse in place. 7. On the paper side of fusible web trace 2 (6") leaf shapes, 3 (1 ½") circle shapes, 1 (2 ½")heart shape, 1 (2") heart shape, 1(1 ½") heart shape, and 1 (1") heart shape. 2. Rough cut shapes out and fuse to green fabric, fusing one leaf shape to a dark green fabric, one leaf shape to a lighter green fabric, three circles to a third green fabric, and four hearts to a fourth green fabric. Make sure to follow manufacturer's instructions for fusing. 3. Using small, sharp scissors, cut out shapes on traced lines. Cut lighter green leaf shape approximately in half with a curved line. (Follow photograph.) Remove paper backing. 4. Using the photograph as your guide, fuse pea pods, peas, and leaves to towel in the following order: dark green pea pod, peas, light green half pea pod, leaves. 5. Blanket stitch around all appliqué shapes using matching thread. You can do this by machine or hand. The towel in the photograph was machine stitched. 6. Using #5 pearl cotton and a stem stitch, hand embroider stems and tendrils. (Follow the photograph or create your own.) 6 TEA TOWEL PATTERN APRIL - CARROTS Using Shapeplay Appliqué Size: 20" x 28" Rating: Easy 7 Supplies: □ Purchased tea towel, approximately 20 x 28 inches. □ 3 orange fat quarters or smaller scraps. □ Shapeplay Templates 5” Teardrop □ 25" of small green rickrack □ Fusible web □ Pencil or pen for tracing templates □ Iron □ Sewing machine □ Matching orange thread for blanket stitch on appliqués. □ Matching green thread for sewing down rick-rack. □ Sharp scissors Construction: 1. On the paper side of fusible web trace 3 (5”) teardrop shapes. 2. Rough cut shapes out and fuse one teardrop shape to each of the three orange fabrics. Follow manufacturer’s instructions for fusible web. 3. Using small, sharp scissors cut out shapes on traced lines. 4. Using the photograph as a guide determine where you want to place the carrots and mark where the rick-rack stems come out of the carrot with a light pencil mark directly on the towel. 5. Cut the rick-rack into nine 2 ½ inch lengths. Place a length of rick-rack starting at the pencil mark and sew it on using green thread and a smaller stitch length. Backstitch at the beginning and end of the rick-rack. Using the photograph as a guide, sew on the other two rick-rack stems. Repeat for the other two carrot’s stems. 6. Remove the paper backing from the carrots and fuse them to the towel covering the ends of the rick-rack stems. 7. Blanket stitch around the carrots using matching orange thread. 8 TEA TOWEL PATTERN MAY - LEMONS Using Shapeplay Appliqué Size: 20" x 28" Rating: Easy 9 Supplies: □ Purchased tea towel, approximately 20" x 28" □ 2 yellow fat quarters or smaller scraps, one darker and one lighter. □ 1 off-white fat quarter or smaller scrap □ 1 grey fat quarter or smaller scrap □ 1 pink striped fat quarter or smaller scrap □ Shapeplay templates 3 ½ " Circle 3 " Circle 6 " Wedge 4 ½" Wedge 1 ½" Teardrop □ Fusible web □ Pencil or pen for tracing templates □ Iron □ Sewing machine □ Matching yellow, grey, and pink thread for blanket stitching on appliqués □ Sharp scissors Construction: 1. On the paper side of fusible web trace 2 (3 ½") circles. On the ends of one circle, using the picture as a guide, draw two pointy ends, so the circle looks like a lemon shape. Trace 1 (3") circle shape, 8 (1 ½") teardrop shapes, 1 (6") wedge shape, 1 (4 ½") wedge shape, and one rectangle shape approximately 8 ½" long and ½" wide. 2. Rough cut shapes out and fuse lemon shape and 3 ½" circle to darkest yellow fabric, 8 teardrop shapes and 4 ½" wedge shape to lighter yellow fabric, 3" circle to off-white fabric, 6" wedge shape to grey fabric, and rectangle shape to pink striped fabric. Make sure to follow manufacturer's instructions for fusing. 3. Using small, sharp scissors, cut out shapes on traced lines. Remove paper backing. 4. Using the photograph as your guide, fuse dark yellow circle to the center of your towel at the bottom. Fuse off-white circle in the center of the dark yellow circle, and then arrange eight teardrop shapes on top of off-white circle and fuse into place. Fuse lemon shape to the left of what is now the lemon slice. Fuse grey wedge to the right of the lemon slice. Fuse yellow wedge on top of grey wedge, leaving approximately ¼" of the grey wedge showing at the bottom. Fuse pink striped rectangle shape on top of grey and yellow wedges to look like a straw 5. Blanket stitch around all appliqué shapes using matching thread. You can do this by machine or hand. The towel in the photograph was machine stitched. 10 TEA TOWEL PATTERN JUNE - STRAWBERRIES Using Shapeplay Appliqué Size: 20" x 28" Rating: Easy 11 Supplies: □ □ □ □ □ □ □ □ □ □ □ □ Purchased tea towel, approximately 20” x 28”. 1 red fat quarter or smaller scrap 1 green fat quarter or smaller scrap 1 brown plaid fat quarter or smaller scrap Shapeplay templates 2" Heart 1" Leaf Fusible web Pencil or pen for tracing templates Ruler Iron Sewing machine Sharp scissors Black thread for blanket stitching on appliqués. Construction: 1. On the paper side of fusible web trace 7 (2”) heart shapes and 12 (1”) leaf shapes. Round the bottom of the hearts by placing one of the curves from the top of the heart template in the bottom “V” of the heart shape until the sides match up and trace along the curve. 2. On the paper side of fusible web, with a ruler draw a 5” x 3 ½” rectangle. On one of the 5” sides make a mark ½” inch in on both ends. Make a line from the mark to the end of the other 5” side. Repeat on the other side. This will make the basket shape. It should be 5” at the top and 4” at the bottom and 3 ½“ tall. 3. Rough cut shapes out and fuse the hearts to the wrong side of the red fabric, the leaves to the wrong side of the green fabric and the basket to the wrong side of the brown plaid fabric. 4. Using small, sharp scissors, cut out the shapes on the traced lines. Remove paper backing. 5. Using the photograph as your guide arrange the shapes on the tea towel and fuse into place. 6. Blanket stitch around all appliqué shapes using black thread. You can do this by hand or by machine. On the paper side of fusible web trace 1 (6”) half-circle shape, 1 (7") half-circle shape and 1 (7 1/2") half-circle shape. 2. Rough cut shapes out and fuse the 6" half-circle to the wrong side of the red fabric, 7" half-circle to the wrong side of the light green fabric, and 7 1/2" half-circle to the wrong side of the medium green fabric. 4. Using small, sharp scissors, cut out the shapes on the traced lines. Remove paper backing. 5. Using the photograph as your guide arrange the shapes on the tea towel and fuse into place. 6. Blanket stitch around all appliqué shapes using matching thread. You can do this by hand or by machine. The towel in the photograph was machine stitched. 7. On the paper side of fusible web trace 21 (1 ½”) ovals and 1 (2”) wedge. On the wedge draw a curved line from the upper right corner to the lower left corner. 2. Rough cut shapes out and fuse the ovals to the wrong side of the purple fabric and the wedge to the wrong side of the brown fabric. 3. Using small sharp scissors cut out the shapes on the traced line and remove paper. 4. Using the photograph as your guide fuse the grapes and the stem to the towel. 5. On the paper side of fusible web trace 3 (4 ½") circles. 2 (3") circles, 3 (3") leaves, 3 (¾") wedges, and 1 (¾") oval. 2. Rough cut shapes out and fuse 3 (4 ½") circles to red fabric, 2 (3") circles to off-white fabric, 3 (3") leaves to green fabric, 3 (¾") wedges to brown fabric, and 1 (¾") oval to pink fabric. Make sure to follow manufacturer's instructions for fusing. 3. Using small, sharp scissors, cut out shapes on traced lines. Remove paper backing 4. Using the photograph as your guide, fuse three red circles across the bottom of the towel. Fuse off-white circles onto two of the red circles, placing the edge of the off-white circle at the right edge of the red circle. Fuse wedges and leaf shapes to the top of each apple and the pink oval on the off-white circle of the far right apple, towards the right-hand edge of the off-white circle. 5. Blanket stitch around all appliqué shapes except the off-white circles using matching thread. You can do this by machine or hand. The towel in the photograph was machine stitched. 6. Using a scallop stitch and red thread, stitch around each off-white circle so that the edge looks like teeth marks. 7. Embroider black eyes using French knots and a pink mouth using an outline stitch on the pink oval (worm). 18 TEA TOWEL PATTERN OCTOBER - PUMPKINS Using Shapeplay Appliqué Size: 20" x 28" Rating: Easy 19 Supplies: □ □ □ □ Purchased tea towel, approximately 20” x 28”. 3 orange fat eighths or smaller scraps. 1 green fat eighths or smaller scrap. On the paper side of fusible web trace one 5” oval, one 4” oval, one 3 ½” circle and three 1” wedges. 2. Rough cut shapes out and fuse each oval and circle to one of the orange fabrics. Fuse the three wedges to the green fabric. Follow manufacturer’s instructions for fusing. 3. Using small, sharp scissors cut out shapes on traced lines. Remove paper backing. 4. Using the photograph as a guide fuse the shapes to the tea towel. 5. Blanket stitch around all appliqué shapes using brown thread. You can do this by machine or by hand. The towel in the photograph was machine stitched. 6. Using the photograph as a guide use a pencil to lightly draw curved lines on the pumpkins and a vine line coming from the 5” pumpkin stem. 7. Either by machine or by hand, stitch the curved lines on the pumpkins and the vine. These lines in the photograph were stitched by machine. 20 TEA TOWEL PATTERN NOVEMBER - CORN Using Shapeplay Appliqué Size: 20" x 28" Rating: Easy 21 Supplies: □ Purchased tea towel, approximately 20" x 28" □ 3 yellow/tan scraps (corn) □ 5 gold/tan scraps (husks) □ Shapeplay templates 6" Oval 4 ½" Leaf □ Fusible web □ Pencil or pen for tracing templates □ Iron □ Sewing machine □ Matching yellow/tan thread for blanket stitching on appliqués □ Sharp scissors Construction: 1. On the paper side of fusible web trace (3) 6" ovals and (5) 4 ½" leaves. Rough cut shapes out and fuse 3 ovals to three different corn fabrics and 5 leaves to five different leaf fabrics. Make sure to follow manufacturer's instructions for fusing. 2. Using small, sharp scissors, cut out shapes on traced lines. Remove paper backing. 3. Cut each leaf shape approximately in half using curved lines. 4. Using the photograph as your guide, fuse three ovals in one corner of the towel. Arrange cut leaf shapes on top of ovals and fuse into place. 5. Blanket stitch around all appliqué shapes using matching thread. You can do this by machine or hand. Brown scrap for stem. Shapeplay templates. Pear shape provided with pattern. Wedge shape is free at www.patchplayquilting.com. 6 ½ ” Pear 1” Wedge Fusible web. Pencil for tracing template. Iron. Sewing machine. Matching thread for blanket stitching on appliqué. Sharp scissors. Construction: 1. On the paper side of fusible web trace one 6 ½” pear shape and one 1”wedge shape. 2. Rough cut shapes out and fuse the pear shape to the yellow-gold fabric and the wedge shape to the brown fabric. Follow manufacturer’s instructions for fusing. 3. Using small, sharp scissors cut out shapes on traced line. Remove paper backing. 4. Using the photograph as your guide fuse the shapes to the tea towel. 5.
