Angela Fulcher at Mindfield
Angela Fulcher, commissioned
by Mindfield at Electric Picnic
to produce a new work for the
Leviathan Political Cabaret tent,
has invited Maser to collaborate
on the production of a large
scale fabric banner which will
serve as a backdrop for the tent’s
performances.
The abstracted pattern of glitter
spandex, crush velvet and bath
towels refers to crashing waves
in the deep sea, drawn from the
idea of the Leviathan sea monster
alluded to in Hobbes title for
his classic treatise on statecraft.
Responding through colour and
surface to ideas that will play out
in the tent, the piece provides a
platform for Maser’s design for the
Repeal the 8th mural.
Fulcher will also install her 2010
work Hurry on Sundown in the
Word Tent. Hurry on Sundown
is a suspended structure of fabric
panels stitched into a net design
for a geodesic sphere, which she
constructed from tents abandoned
at a 2009 music festival.
Angela is a recipient of the Next
Generation Bursary Award
2016, a special initiative of the
Arts Council and the Ireland
2016 Centenary Programme, in
recognition of the role of artists in
the events of 1916.

Nick Kelly is a Choice Music Prizenominated solo artist, responsible for
some of the most loved Irish singles
of all time with his former band The
Fat Lady Sings, and voted #3 Best Irish
Songwriter in Hot Press Magazine’s 2015
Reader’s Poll (after Hozier and Damien
Rice) for his most recent album “Loads”,
released under his Alien Envoy alter ego.
He’s also an Oscar-shortlisted filmmaker (for 2011’s Live Action Short
“Shoe”), whose work has been featured
by New York’s MOMA, and has just
wrapped on his eagerly-anticipated
first feature “The Drummer And The
Goalkeeper”, funded by the Irish Film
Board.
SEE:HEAR is a new stage show
developed by Nick - intertwining a live
musical performance of some of his
best-loved songs; a screening of his three
acclaimed short films; and a witty and
compelling talk on the many strong
links that Nick sees between making
music and movies.
“I truly believe that my background in
rock’n’roll gives me huge advantages as
a film-maker. The subjects that inspire
me, the muscles I’m using to do the
work, the kinds of people and processes
I interact with, the challenges I face and
the skills I’ve developed to meet those
challenges are all pretty much identical.
SEE:HEAR is my way of justifying my
own creative process, and explaining
how I think these two art forms can
cross-pollinate and benefit each
other. Plus I get to play my songs AND
screen my movies in public, which is a
particular thrill.” – Nick Kelly

Super Paua with the support of The Arts Council presents
A new play by Stephen Jones
Directed by Karl Shiels
Starring Stephen Jones and Seána
Kerslake
Winner of the Stewart Parker Trust/
BBC Radio Drama Award, From Eden
is a dark comedic drama about two
lost individuals, Alan and Eva, who
find themselves locked in a bathroom
together on New Years Eve while the party continues outside
the door. It’s an ideal meeting...once upon a time, only once,
unexpectedly.
-The Irish Mail on Sunday 5 Stars
“One of the most needle-sharp, acidly funny short plays I’ve
seen for auite a while” -The Sunday Independent
16.30 JUST A SHOT AWAY (JUST A KISS AWAY) On 25 June, 2016, a group of friends from around the world
walked down O’Connell Street as crowds of strangers
cheered. Just A Shot Away explores the long journey they took
to get there. Theatre-makers Oonagh Murphy, Maeve Stone and Moira
Brady Averill, collaborate with LGBTQI individuals who have
sought asylum in Ireland from persecution on the grounds of
sexual orientation or gender identity, creating a performance
event that presents what it is they have left behind.

MADE UP
Diving into the sweaty depths of the
dance floor and coming up for air in the
smoking area, MADE UP sees a series
of fragmented accounts piece together
a striking, insightful portrait of modern
nightlife culture. With an all female
cast providing exhilarating ensemble
energy, audiences will find themselves
immersed in the world of the piece bopping unstoppably, soaring through
the highs, and smashing through the
heartbreak.
SUNDAY
How much do you really know about the Internet?
12.00
In 1968 a Florida teenager is making free calls by whistling
into the telephone. In 2008 a video of Tom
Cruise turns a bunch of online pranksters
into a global protest movement. In
between, the Internet was born. LOVE AND WAR: WORDS AND MUSIC FROM
THE WESTERN FRONT
In a thrilling feat of solo storytelling,
writer-performer Cathal McGuire
draws these disparate threads together
into a sweeping, cinematic narrative of
friendship, betrayal and the search for
belonging. And what’s more: it’s all true.
“Tells us the meaning of what it is to truly
connect to others… beautiful and enlightening” – LeCool Dublin
The Theatre Stage is produced by Willie White; and Matthew
Smyth, who is a recipient of the Arts Council’s 16 x 16 Next
Generation Bursary
Bewley’s Cafe Theatre and
the Delmaine String Quartet present
This acclaimed programme of words and
music reflects the human experience
of the Western Front and features the
letters of an English Artillery Officer to
his Irish sweetheart in Athlone.
Threaded through this moving love
story are some of the great works from
the famous generation of World War
One soldier poets and composers, along
with several popular songs of the period
- accompanied by string quartet.
The performers are Michael James Ford, Susannah De Wrixon,
Elliot Moriarty and the Delmaine String Quartet.
“... a small gem of melancholy beauty.” Sunday Independent
16 AND RISING PROJECT
It’s 2016, and in the midst of vicious austerity, emigration, and
a housing crisis, the young people of Dublin are becoming
increasingly disenfranchised with the state of the nation.
From their base in the autonomous St Enda’s squat, a secret
revolutionary organisation of women and men plan an
insurrection that will transform the city, and challenge the
survival of the 32nd Dáil.
An ambitious act of fictional class warfare and dubious
historical revisionism, 16 and Rising asks viewers to consider
whether their society is dystopian enough, yet, for revolution.

Bursary from the Arts Council

“Did that play of mine send out certain
men the English shot?” –W.B. Yeats
Dublin, 24 April 1916. Ireland’s leading
actors abandon a matinee of Cathleen
Ni Houlihan. Stepping out of their
costumes and taking their revolvers
from beneath the Abbey stage, they march to Dublin Castle.
Firing the first shots of the insurrection they destroyed the
status quo and changed forever the course of Irish history.
Helena Molony and Sean Connolly rehearsed for rebellion,
carried out rebellion and suffered the fatal and living
consequences of their participation.
Derived from real-life testimonies, Rebel Rebel chronicles the
finite moments when the play (which more than any other
symbolised the link between the cultural revival and the Irish
revolution) spilled revolution from the stage onto the streets,
leading to his fatal shooting and dying in her arms on the roof
of City Hall.

THEATRE OF FOOD
MIXOLOGY, DRINKS
AND MUSIC
Mixology at the Theatre of Food will find
OISIN DAVIS, and DIVA SHANNEN
BUTLER KEANE stirring it up, and
there’ll be a speed wine tasting session
hosted by Cork’s favourite wine café,
L’ATITUDE 51. Chef PAUL FLYNN and
Bacardi champion mixologist ALAN
KAVANAGH will present a special
session on classic cocktails. And in
addition there will be hangover cures
and healthy eating chats.
T
heatre of Food returns to Electric Picnic 2016,
once again bringing its delicious smorgasbord
of cutting-edge food demos, wired-up mixology,
inspired culinary workshops, and far-out foodie tastings.
THE FOOD COLLECTIVE
This year the Food Collective of performers introduces new festival faces, including
ROZ PURCELL, former Miss Universe Ireland, food blogger, cookery book author
and fashion model, SUSAN JANE WHITE, best-selling cookbook author, blogger
and You Tube star, and KATIE SANDERSON, chef and creator of legendary pop-ups
such as Dilisk.
There will be food from around the globe too, with cult Cork city restaurateurs
TAKASHI MIYAZAKI from Japan, and GAUTHAM IYER from India, showing the
secrets of their two national cuisines.
In amidst the new faces, there are seasoned Theatre of Foodies: starred chefs,
DERRY CLARK, ROSS LEWIS, GARY O’HANLON and KEVIN THORNTON
restaurateurs, and food stars CLODAGH McKENNA, THE HAPPY PEAR David &
Stephen Flynn, and DECLAN MAXWELL.
A THEATRE OF FOOD
This year the Theatre of Food will be dressed for the occasion, sporting a brand new
curtain, and a piano. This is, after all, first and foremost a Theatre. The stunning
kitchen will be made by LIAM GRANT WOOD DESIGN. And all the food cooked
in the kitchen is supplied by ARDKEEN.COM, where you can find Ireland’s best
selection of artisan foods.
Meanwhile backstage, the DOYLE COLLECTION KITCHEN will this year be
running at full tilt, offering TASTINGS of the delicious treats demoed by our panel
of food stars. The state of the art kitchen, both front and back will be equipped with
the most up-to-date KENWOOD equipment.
Music is one of the overall themes of
the Theatre this year as TofF has, after
all, a team of people who somehow
find themselves working in both food,
drinks and music. Meet JOE O’LEARY,
former lead singer from the band
FRED, now impresario and inn keeper
in IMRO award winning venue, Levis’s
Corner House in Ballydehob. Joe will
be bringing in some special guests
from the Festival, and we’re also joined
by husband and wife food and music
teams, AUDREY McDONALD and TOM
DUNNE, and AOIFE McELWAINE and
Niall Byrne, aka NIALLER9.
CHIC
One of the highlights of the whole event
will be the performance of the worldclass drummer for Nile Rogers and Chic
– RALPH ROLLE, who will not only be
playing the drums, but demoing his
delicious New York cookie recipes.
FAMILY FOOD EVENTS
Children will be entertained with a
special pizza-making session, plus
there’ll be a push to beat the record
set last year for the longest length of
pasta ever produced at a music festival.
Children are invited to come along and
sample blast-frozen yoghurt, make
food animals, and create Mexican paper
flowers.
