KNAPPOGUE CASTLE
Knappogue Castle, a magnificent example of a medieval tower house, was built in 1467
by Sean MacNamara. The MacNamaras carried out extensive restoration before Lord
Dunboyne acquired it in 1855. Lord Dunboyne made many additions to the Castle
including the Courtyard, the Drawing Room and West Wing with its Clock Tower,
Gateway and the Formal Walled Garden. Its history is imaginatively told on colourful
panels throughout the rooms.
It offers one of the most romantic and unique wedding venues in the country with its
rich history, charming grounds and magical ambience creating the perfect setting.
Knappogue Castle is located in a truly picturesque setting, surrounded by the tranquil
landscape and rolling hills of County Clare. Beautiful gardens surround the Castle
where one can relax or enjoy a peaceful stroll. The Formal Rose Garden and the Walled
Garden dating back to 1817, now fully restored, are the ideal setting for your Wedding
Pictures, Outdoor Ceremonies and Receptions.
Friends and relatives so fond and dear,
Tis our greatest pleasure to have you here,
On this your special day, our wish to you
The goodness of the old, the best of the new.
God bless you both who drink this Mead,
May it always fill your every need.

Knappogue State Rooms
In the 1920's Knappogue passed into the hands of a local farmer and fell into
disrepair. Luckily, it was purchased in 1966 by the Hon. Mark Edwin Andrews
of Houston Texas. He and his wife, a prominent American architect, in
collaboration with Shannon Development, carried out an extensive and sensitive
restoration returning the Castle to its former 15th Century glory while
encompassing and retaining later additions which are a testament to the
continuous occupation of the Castle.
The Andrews were the last occupants of the Castle. Shannon Development
purchased the Castle in 1996 with the intention of preserving this important
building for future generations. The Andrews spent a great deal of money
restoring the private apartment in the Castle, which was their private residence.
This apartment which accommodates ten people, is furnished to the highest
standards.

…Once upon a time,
by the moonlight one evening
It was a young maiden’s task,
to decide what she’d choose
if one wish she could ask.
So she wishes with a whisper
“on my own wedding day,
I wish that my true love
Would steal me away”
“To his Castle he’d take me
by carriage or steed,
where friends join us in banquet
and toast us with Mead”
“And a rose he would give me
when we’re man and wife,
and I’d never forget
the best day of my life”…
