ORDER OF CATALOGUE: Animals are sold in catalogue order with the exception
of the DCBS Show & Sale Champion Bull and Reserve Champion, who will be sold
after the first class of bulls have gone through the sale ring, as indicated in the
catalogue.
HEALTH TESTS: All animals have been pre-movement tested for TB in accordance
with the current DEFRA regulations. All adult animals and calves at foot over 9
months of age, entered in Section 1 of the Sale have been BVD antigen tested clear
and vaccinated. Calves at foot under 9 months of age are not sold as BVD tested
and vaccinated. Due to the nature of the disease, statements about Johne’s
Disease status are only given for animals from CHeCS accredited herds and in such
cases, a whole herd Risk Level for Johne’s will be given where available.
FERTILITY: Females sold as “in-calf” have been PD tested as 12 weeks or more in
calf on the day of the PD test.
NATIONAL BEEF ASSOCIATION TERMS & CONDITIONS OF SALE: Animals
sold in Section 1 and 2 are sold under the NBA Terms & Conditions of Sale (unless
where exceptions are specifically stated for individual lots sold as part of a Major
Reduction or Herd Dispersal). The Society draws vendors’ and buyers’ attention to
these Terms & Conditions which can be viewed in full at www.redrubydevon.co.uk,
www.nationalbeefassociation.com, or by contacting the DCBS Secretary for a paper
copy. Copies will also be available at Sedgemoor market on the day of sale. The
Society draws vendors’ attention to Annex 1 of the NBA Terms & Conditions
“Guidelines for the Standards of Good Husbandry and Management In respect
of bulls purchased at Sales”. Animals sold in Section 3 of the Sale are sold
outside of the NBA Terms & Conditions. The Society has fixed the “keep” element of
these rules at £7 per week for Bulls and £5 per week for females.
DCBS INSPECTION OF CATTLE: In addition to statutory inspection of cattle
arriving at market, the DCBS conducts its own inspection of cattle forward:
Bulls: Bulls are inspected on Sale Day by the DCBS-appointed veterinary surgeon
prior to the commencement of the Show & Sale. In the case of a bull failing the
veterinary inspection, the bull may not be sold on Sale Day, either through the ring or
outside. Registration of any progeny from a bull failing the veterinary inspection that
are subsequently entered for registration in the Davy’s Devon Herd Book will be
subject to the progeny passing an inspection by DCBS, and the owner of the animals
to be inspected will be required to bear DCBS’ costs. DCBS will mark the bull’s
pedigree certificate on Sale Day with regard to this restriction. The veterinary
surgeon’s decision on Sale Day is final. The owner of the bull may subsequently
make a written request to DCBS for the bull to be re-inspected at a later date. All
bulls are weighed on Sale Day. DCBS Inspectors may fail a bull on weight-for-age
grounds. In the case of a bull passing the veterinary inspection but failing on weightfor-age, the following provisions will apply:
• No restriction will be placed on registration of progeny.
• The bull’s lot number sticker will be scored through.
• The bull may be sold through the ring following the conclusion of the Show &
Sale. In such a case, neither the NBA Breeding Warranties nor the DCBS
waiver of buyer’s transfer fee will apply.
Females: Females are inspected on Sale Day by DCBS Inspectors prior to the
commencement of the Show & Sale. If rejected for whatever reason, the animal’s lot
number sticker will be scored through. The animal may be sold through the ring
following the conclusion of the Show & Sale. In such cases, neither the NBA Terms
& Conditions nor the DCBS waiver of transfer fees will apply. Progeny of females
rejected at inspection will be eligible for registration in accordance with registration
criteria at the time of birth. Where a bull has been rejected from the Show & Sale for
failing the veterinary inspection (as above), females in calf to the rejected bull will be
sold following the conclusion of the Show & Sale, and their progeny will be required
to pass a veterinary inspection prior to registration (as detailed above).
UPSET PRICE: All bulls are sold subject to an upset price of 1600gns.
DESCRIPTIONS: The written notes or verbal comments supplied by the vendor are
not the responsibility of the Auctioneers or the Devon Cattle Breeders’ Society. The
notes describing each animal included in the auction particulars, including health
declarations, have in all cases been supplied by the seller. Whilst the Society makes
every effort to ensure the accuracy of these notes, the Society cannot except any
liability to the purchaser of any animal for any loss damage, costs, expenses or other
claims for compensation arising from any details or instructions supplied by the seller
of that animal which are incomplete, incorrect, inaccurate or misleading in any way.
DCBS TYPE CLASSIFICATION SCHEME: The DCBS operates its own breed
specific type classification scheme to assist breeders’ efforts in breeding the “ideal
type” Red Ruby Devon.
The scheme has been running since 2005. The
classification scheme’s scoring system measures skeletal conformation, mobility,
and breed character to produce a Final Score of 100. Animals are classified by the
Society’s independent Classification Officer, into the following classification
designations:

Animals entered for sale which have been Type Classified will have their
classification designation shown at the end of the pedigree registration number.
For example, Buttercup F1000 G+79 or Jack M1000 VG89
ABRI BREEDPLAN PERFORMANCE RECORDING: The DCBS operates a
Performance Recording Programme with ABRI Breedplan. Lots offered for sale from
vendors who record with Breedplan will have the latest Estimated Breed Values
(EBVs) included in the catalogue.
Only Red Ruby Devon GROUP BREEDPLAN EBVs or INTERIM EBVs with
Accuracy (Acc) can be validly compared between herds. An EBV (Estimated
Breeding Value) is the best estimate of an animal’s genetic merit for that trait. An
Accuracy (Acc) value is presented with every EBV and gives an indication of the
amount of information that has been used in the calculation of that EBV. The higher
the accuracy the lower the likelihood of change in the animal’s EBV as more
information is analysed for that animal or his/her relatives. Accuracy below 75%
should be considered low.

in the Sale Catalogue were compiled by the Agricultural Business Research Institute
(ABRI) from data supplied by breeders. Neither the Devon Cattle Breeders Society

Her grand sire was a super bull, Stonegrove Fearless, who was Young Bull & Bull of
the Year in 2005. The Hatton family have been a hugely successful family at
Stonegrove with bags of milk and superb mothering ability. BVD tested and
vaccinated on 24.10.15 and 14.1.16. Whole herd TB tested clear October 2015.

FULL HERD BOOK
RECENTLY SERVED HEIFERS
Mr D Garwood (Candlewick)
The Candlewick Herd grazes Dorset Lowland Heath as part of a successful
conservation project. The cattle grow well on this extensive, mixed grazing and are
housed for part of the winter when the land is too wet. The whole herd is vaccinated
for Lepto and IBR and runs on redwater land. The cattle are very hardy with robust
locomotion, enviable unassisted calving rates and docility forming part of our
selection criteria because our grazing sites are all large public access areas with
challenging terrain. We have not had a single case of any respiratory disease in two
winter seasons. The whole herd was again tested clear for TB on 09.11.15 and all
will be pre-movement tested on 29.02.16 prior to Sale. These six young heifers are
among the cream of our crop for this season but surplus to our requirements as our
conservation grazing sites are now at full capacity.

Sired by Burwood Admiral who has been in the Dalwood Herd for 11 years. Admiral
has been a very successful stock bull and has provided us with the foundations of
our herd. He is a traditional type Devon with plenty of depth and ease of fleshing.
Dalwood Sugar's grandmother came from the Silverdale herd in 2006, she has been
a very prolific cow producing lovely deep ruby red calves. Dalwood Sugar is a
typical example of her grandmother. Vaccinated against Blackleg on 01.05.15.
MR D GARWOOD (CANDLEWICK)
The Candlewick Herd grazes Dorset Lowland Heath as part of a successful
conservation project. The cattle grow well on this extensive, mixed grazing and are
housed for part of the winter when the land is too wet. The whole herd is vaccinated
for Lepto and IBR and runs on redwater land. The cattle are very hardy with robust
locomotion, enviable unassisted calving rates and docility forming part of our
selection criteria because our grazing sites are all large public access areas with
challenging terrain. We have not had a single case of any respiratory disease in two
winter seasons. The whole herd was again tested clear for TB on 09.11.15 and all
will be pre-movement tested on 29.02.16 prior to Sale. These four young heifers are
among the cream of our crop for this season but surplus to our requirements as our

PEDIGREE TRANSFERS
Under Devon Cattle Breeders’ Society rules, transfers are the
responsibility of the purchaser and a transfer fee is payable by the
purchaser: £13.20 per female and £19.20 per male (incl. of VAT)
However, for all animals purchased at the DCBS Society Show &
Sale, all transfers are FREE for animal purchased in Sections 1 and 2
of the Sale and the pedigree transfer will be completed automatically
by the DCBS office.
Please note the normal transfer fee will apply for any animal sold in Part
3 of this sale or sold privately. In this event, buyers will be given a
transfer form to complete and return, with fees, to DCBS office.
