Celebrating Thirty-Two Years
So many residents and guests were
present in September as we celebrated
Kirby Pines’ thirty-second anniversary
that it seems fitting to reflect back on
the celebration and the commitment
selected for this year – Kindness.
Beginning with Thursday evening’s
blessing of the flag, the community was
filled with excitement and pride. The
actual flag raising ceremony on Friday
had a large number of attendees and
this event demonstrated our “kindness”
as we reflected on the 14th anniversary
of what has become known simply as
9/11.
The following day maintenance and
ground employees busily prepared for
the Lighting of the Lake ceremony,
while still other employees began
preparing a multitude of delicious foods
for a reception later that night.
As dusk came closer, residents, guests
and staff began gathering at the lake for
what was to become another beautiful
ceremony of lighting an individual
candle in honor of each anniversary
year for Kirby Pines. While we were
at Kirby Pines
very lucky and honored to have a
resident representative for many of the
thirty-two years available to physically
light an anniversary candle; the years
without a resident representative were
ceremonialy recognized by releasing
white doves.
This annual event – The Lighting of the
Lake – was yet another example of why
Kirby Pines continues to be the only
retirement community to have ever
been voted and selected as the “best”
retirement community in the southeast
by readers of The Commercial Appeal.
Until next year, happy thirty-second
anniversary.

Have you visited the Oasis recently?
Exercise has been proven to improve
physical and emotional health for
people of all ages.
The most popular piece of equipment
in the Oasis is called NuStep, The
sitting position minimizes joint stress
and lower back pain. This equipment
promotes a natural walking motion
while eliminating impact and stress on
joints. Easy to operate and adjust to
your specific height, weight, and level of
endurance. You can keep track of your
time while it automatically calculates
your steps and calories burned. The
NuStep is great for helping you lose
weight or improve your strength and
endurance in your arms and legs. If you
have not been exercising for a while,
•4•

the NuStep is a good beginning place.
Because you are seated you don’t have
to worry about balance and yet it helps
to strengthen some of the muscles
needed to promote good balance. We
have three NuStep machines (one is
almost brand new)
We make appointments with the
doctors, our hairdresser and lunch with
friends. Why not schedule a visit to the
Oasis 2-3 times a week? This is a great
place to start your exercise routine.
Prove to yourself that moderate exercise
improves your health and well being.
Mary Hand is in the Oasis Monday –
Thursday from 8 am to noon. Make an
appointment with her to assist you with
the equipment and help you set up your
exercise program.

AGE & DRIVING
Safety Tips and Warning
Signs for Older Drivers
It’s normal for our driving abilities to
change as we age. By reducing risk
factors and incorporating safe driving
practices, many of us can continue
driving safely long into our senior years.
But we do have to pay attention to any
warning signs that age is interfering with
our driving safety and make appropriate
adjustments. Even if you find that you
need to reduce your driving or give up
the keys, it doesn’t mean the end of
your independence. Seeking alternative
methods of transportation can offer
health and social benefits, as well as a
welcome change of pace to life.
#1: Understand how aging affects driving
Everyone ages differently, so there is no arbitrary cutoff as to when someone should stop driving. However, older adults are
more likely to receive traffic citations and get into accidents than younger drivers. In fact, fatal crash rates rise sharply after a
driver has reached the age of 70. What causes this increase? As we age, factors such as decreased vision, impaired hearing, or
slowed motor reflexes may become a problem. You may have a chronic condition that gradually worsens with time, or you may
have to adjust to a sudden change, such as a stroke.
You may have driven your entire life and take great pride in your safety record, but as you age, it is critical that you realize your
driving ability can change. To continue driving safely, you need to recognize that changes can happen, get help when they do,
and be willing to listen if others voice concerns.
#2: Tips for safe senior driving
Aging does not automatically equal total loss of driving ability. There are many things you can do to continue driving safely,
including modifying your car, the way you drive, and understanding and rectifying physical issues that may interfere with
driving. 1) Drive defensively 2) Know your limitations 3) Listen to the concerns of others
#3: Benefits of not driving
Adjusting to life without a car may be challenging at first; most likely, you’ve been
driving your whole life and it feels like quite a shock. It’s normal to be frustrated, angry,
or irritable. You might even feel ashamed or worry that you are losing your independence.
However, it takes a lot of courage to stop driving and put the safety of yourself and others
first. You may also find there are many benefits to living without a car that you may not
have considered.

served as Judge in the Memphis General Sessions Court, holding
this position until retiring in 1986.
Married in 1948, Morgan and Betty had a son, Cary, and a
daughter, Jo. We are familiar with careers in Law, Education,
Nursing, and Business Administration, but their children opted
for careers that focused on public service, in a certain sense of
the term. Daughter, Jo, earned her BS Degree in Animal Science
from the U. of Kentucky. Employed by Tyson Foods Corporation,
she operated a Farrowing Farm comprised of more than 500 sows
(swine/pigs). Son, Cary, earned a Ph.D. from Upsala U. in Sweden.
He served as Executive Director of Global Crop Diversity Trust,
located in Bonn, Germany. The Trust established a Seed Bank,
located above the Artic Circle. The Trust and the Seed Bank are
storing a wide variety of the world’s seeds, ensuring availability
to Nations in the event of massive total destruction of known food
commodities.
Morgan and Betty Fowler moved to the Kirby Pines Retirement
Community in 2013. Morgan’s sister, Betsye French, lives at Kirby
Pines as well; she is our Librarian. Morgan and Betty Fowler
have been blessed with opportunities to “make a difference” via

FOREVER MAKING A DIFFERENCE
Morgan Fowler was born in 1922 to Edith Carrington Fowler and
Joseph Arthur Fowler. His father worked for and, subsequently,
bought out the Memphis Electric Company, changing the name
to Fowler Electric Company; he also served as President of the
National Association of Electrical Contractors. His mother was
Chief Dietician at the West Tennessee Chest Disease Hospital.
Betty Fowler earned her RN Degree and worked at Baptist
Hospital. Morgan received a BA Degree in Economics and
Business Administration. He enlisted in the Army Reserves; was
called up and assigned to the Signal Corps, being discharged in
1946 with rank of Sergeant. He received his JD Degree from
the U. of Virginia and began his practice at McDonald, Kuhn,
& McDonald. Appointed by Governor Frank Clement, Morgan

The Hero
Babe Ruth, the phenomenal baseball
giant of the early twentieth century,
had remarkable accomplishments. Two
time All-Star selection, seven time
World Series champion, member of
Major League Baseball’s All Century
Team, voted Athlete of the Century by
the Associated Press, named Greatest
Baseball Player of the 20th Century by
Sports Illustrated. But he was not always
in the winning circle. He actually struck
out twice as many times as he hit his
crowd-rousing home runs. Near the end
of his career the Braves were playing
the Reds in Cincinnati. This day he
was no hero. Often fumbling the ball
and throwing badly, his errors were
responsible for most of the five runs
scored by Cincinnati.
As “the Babe” walked off the field
heading toward the dugout after the
third out, a crescendo of angry cries
and boos rose to greet him. Then a boy
jumped over the railing and ran onto
the field. Tears were flowing down the
boy’s face as he threw his arms around
the legs of his “hero.”
Without hesitating a second, Babe Ruth
picked the boy up and hugged him. Then
he sat down and patted his head. The
cries from the crowd abruptly stopped
and a hush fell over the ballpark. Those
in the stands saw two heroes on the
field that day! Babe Ruth, who in spite
of his own dismal day in playing the
game, accepted unexpected love from a
fan; and a small boy who cared about
another’s feelings, especially those of
his “hero.”
This story gives us two
examples
to
follow.
We are sometimes like
Babe Ruth. We fail more
than we succeed.
Our
strikeouts often double our
home runs. Too much we
contribute to the success
of those opposing us. Our
errors account for the
accomplishments of those
against us. When we fail to
keep the standards put upon
us the reaction is loud and
bitter. The response may be
deeply negative.
In the midst of our failures
not everyone boos. Some still hold us up
as a “hero.” Some share our brokenness
and wrap us in their arms of acceptance
and love. Some value us even when we
are at our lowest. Look up into the face
of anyone who expresses such caring
and understanding.
And there’s the example of the young
boy. Around us are those, including
our “heroes,” who need an act of
understanding acceptance. We can’t be
overwhelmed or paralyzed by reaction
of others. Let’s jump onto the field
where they are struggling. A smile, an
embrace, a tear may be all that is needed
to get them through the difficulty.
And, like Babe Ruth, we should
welcome those who look favorably upon
us. Their actions can hush the noise and
silence the opposition. They need our
hugs and attention and appreciation.
Look at the wonderful challenge of
II Corinthians 1:3-4, the “God of
all comfort, who comforts us in our
tribulations, that we may be able to
comfort those who are in any trouble,
with the comfort with which we
ourselves are comforted by God.” And
also I Corinthians 15:58, “Be steadfast,
immovable, always abounding in the
work of the Lord, knowing that your
labor is not in vain in the Lord.”
And it’s been said, “No matter your
performance on the playing field of life
today, the Lord has a hug awaiting for
you at the day’s end. He is your Number
One Fan.”*
