Simple Thoughts...
In the first reading, Jeremiah gives a stern
warning to the leaders of the time. Through him, God
says, “Woe to the shepherds who mislead and scatter
the flock of my pasture.” It is clear that God cares for
His people, and He has entrusted their care into the
hands of the leaders, and they have fallen short. God
promises to replace these bad shepherds with ones

teaching and guiding His flock. In the second reading,
Paul reminds us that we are all part of the flock. Jesus is
our peace and has broken down the walls between us.
Nothing separates us from God, and nothing separates
us from each other, all of us, part of the one body of
Christ. In Christ, we are not lost, but rather, we are
found in Him.
In “The Joy of the Gospel (Evangelii Gaudium),”
Pope Francis wrote, “ The good news is the joy of the
Father who desires that none of His little ones be lost,
the joy of the Good Shepherd who finds the lost sheep
and brings it back to the flock.” ~ This is good news.
God delights in us, His sheep, all of us, part of the one

Family Faith Activities July 19
16th Sunday of Ordinary Time
Rest and relaxation are important elements in our
lives. As parents, and even as kids, we get tired and
overwhelmed. So many
things call for our attention
that it seems like we are
just running around. Jesus
shows us the importance
of that “down time." Jesus
wanted His disciples to come away and spend time
alone with Him. We see that it isn’t as easy as it
sounds as the crowds continued to follow them. Our
lives are similar. Responsibilities don’t end, but the
need to recharge is integral to our faith lives. Prayer
and Eucharist are ways to do this. Gather your family
and ask what their ways of relaxing are. Read Mark
6:30-36 and discuss:
•
•
•
What do the apostles tell Jesus?
Why does Jesus want the apostles to rest a while?
How does Jesus care for the crowd of people?
Spiritual Vacation: Finding time to pray and renew
ourselves is a gift we can give our families. Review
your family calendar and reflect on your family
activities. What are some ways that you can schedule
time for renewal? Create a spiritual vacation for your
family. Take a walk, go somewhere special—simple
things work wonders! Include prayer, Scripture, and
discuss where you see God in your “vacation."
Resting with Art: Give each person a small paper
plate, then color the plate blue representing the lake.
Attach this to a large plate using a paper fastener in
the center of both plates. On the large plate draw
faces representing the crowd. Use brown construction
paper to represent a boat and illustrate Jesus and the
apostles crossing the lake. Turn the larger plate so the
crowd gets to the other side of the lake before Jesus
and the apostles.
Concluding Prayer: Let us pray. Thank you God for
your love and care. Show us how to care for people who
need our help. In the name of Jesus, we pray. Amen.

Saint of the Week: Bridget of Sweden
Bridget was given the gift of mystical prayer and
visions of Christ’s passion. She was also very
practical in living out the Gospel.
• She was born into a wealthy family in 1303.
• She was married and had eight children. One
of them, Catherine of Sweden, was canonized.
• She lived at court in Sweden for two and a half
years and inspired the King and Queen to live
holy lives.
• After her husband died, she founded an order
of nuns called the Brigittines.
• Her feast day is July 23.
In her lifetime, Bridget helped many poor and sick
people who came to her in need. She made many
pilgrimages all around Italy and to the Holy Land.
Bridget died in Rome in 1373.
Action plan: On Bridget’s feast day, think about
one way that you can help someone in need .

"Laudato Si"
(in standard and large print)
"Laudato Si" is addressed to "every person living on
this planet" for an inclusive dialogue about how we
are shaping the future of our planet. Pope Francis
calls the Church and the world to acknowledge the
urgency of our environmental challenges and to join
him in embarking on a new path. This encyclical is
written with both hope and resolve, looking to our
common future with candor and humility. (usccb.org)
Spiritual Direction
How is God present or absent in your life?
In the midst of a busy life, many people find
it difficult to notice God’s action in their daily
affairs. Yet, at the deepest level, many of us
long for a more conscious experience of God’s
presence and love.
A spiritual director/companion is trained to
listen and encourage you to explore a closer
relationship with God through conversation,
listening and prayer.
If you are curious about spiritual direction at the
Casa, or would like to make an appointment,
please contact Sharon Taszarek at 480.948.7460,

FAITH IN ACTION MINISTRIES
Faith in Action Ministries 50 Days of Summer— Featuring our FIA Ministries
How we “Walk the Talk”
Every bulletin this summer will highlight a couple of our Faith in Action Ministries.
If you would like to find more information or join a ministry, see the FIA pages on
thecasa.org or contact Patti, Bonnie or Laura (see below).
Our ministries that help to foster Solidarity Across the Border include
Casa Grounds for Solidarity (the “Fair Trade Plus” Coffee Ministry). This
ministry has been featured in previous bulletins.
Medical Hospitality Ministry
About eight times a year, the
Shriners hold a free clinic in Phoenix
for children with orthopedic conditions.
The generosity of the Shiners extends to our Franciscan
Mission in Guaymas, Mexico and the families that the
missions serves.
The Shriners provide visas, and the children are
able to travel from Guaymas with their mothers. Our
counterparts at the Casa Franciscana in Guaymas assist
the families on the Guaymas end of their journey, and
we assist them on the Phoenix end. Casa volunteers host
families in their homes overnight when they come up
from Guaymas to Phoenix for medical appointments.
For information on how you can host families
overnight in your home or offer travel baskets for
families who have accommodations elsewhere, contact
Liz Gunzelman at [email protected]. You
do not need to speak Spanish to be part of this ministry.
TEACH ENGLISH—EMPOWER OTHERS
English as a Second Language Ministry
Imagine trying to live in a foreign country where you
don’t know the local language. The ESL Ministry teaches
basic English language skills to help immigrants rebuild
their lives. Classes are taught from September to May and
are held in four locations: St. Matthew’s and St. Andrew’s
parishes in Phoenix; Hohokam Elementary School in
Scottsdale and St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Springerville.
Some classes meet twice a week and others meet once a
week. Training is provided at the start of each year. The
ability to speak Spanish is not required, nor do you need a
teaching background.
• We use a team-teaching approach
• Classrooms are total immersion – speaking only
English in the classroom
• Students are dedicated, and instructor-student
relationships often turn into friendships.
For more information, contact [email protected]
Members of the Franciscan Action Circle Ministry work with Keep Phoenix Together (KPT),
a free, community-based immigration legal clinic. KPT works to keep families together by preventing
unnecessary deportations and helping DREAMers apply for deferred status. This is a stopgap measure
until Congress passes Comprehensive Immigration Reform. If you want to work at a clinic, contact
Annie Neroda at [email protected] or Gail Eberlein at [email protected].
Collaborative Partners with Faith in Action Ministry
The Casa Franciscana Outreach (CFO) of the St. Barbara Province supports the Casa Franciscana Mission in Guaymas,
Mexico. In the spirit of St. Francis, we are called to be God’s instruments to serve, to shelter, to nourish, to teach and to
provide pathways of hope. This happens every day in Guaymas through the efforts of our friars and the volunteers of
the CFO. Please visit the website for ways that you can help, including: community outreach, marketing,
fundraising and planning the Guaymas pilgrimage. For more information, email: [email protected]

Vision Corner
A place to heal, a place to serve
After my marriage ended, I went
back to college to get my Master’s
Degree in counseling. While I was
interning, I recommended to a client
who was divorcing that she attend
the divorced/separated group at the
Casa. As a divorced woman, I had
always felt so accepted at the Casa and had been
drawn here by the joyous celebration of the
Eucharist. She said she attended the group and
thought the counselor could really use some
help because there were so many attendees.
Mauro Pando was the counseling director at
the time, so I called him and volunteered my
services to help.
Mauro was my mentor, and now, twenty-five
years later, not only do I still facilitate the group,
but in 2002 I succeeded him as the Casa's
Director of Counseling. I am so grateful to the
Franciscans and the Casa for being a safe place
where I could transform my life and also for
the opportunity to

About the Franciscan Renewal Center
The Franciscan Renewal Center began in 1951 as a place
for retreat programs. Affectionately known as the “Casa
de Paz y Bien” or simply “the Casa,” it is today a Catholic
renewal center in Paradise Valley, Ariz., offering spiritual
growth, healing and transformation that moves lives into
the service of others.
The Casa is an active religious community of the Order
of Friars Minor — part of the worldwide Franciscan
family, following in the footsteps of Sts. Francis and
Clare of Assisi. The Casa is a wholly owned entity of the
Franciscan Province of Saint Barbara, based in Oakland,
Calif., that works cooperatively with the Roman Catholic
Diocese of Phoenix.
Activities at the Casa include daily and Sunday Mass,
retreats, gathering space for non-profit groups, licensed
behavioral health counseling, as well as more than
50 volunteer ministries that give aid to the poor or
vulnerable, empower individuals to improve their
circumstances, and build community fellowship.

Continue the Mission. The mission of
RED CURB = FIRE LANE/NO PARKING
Jesus does not diminish over time. You can
help perpetuate His mission with a gift through
your estate. A simple bequest, beneficiary

Thank you for your strict observance.
For the welfare and safety of all community
