THE CONVENTUAL CHURCH OF OUR LADY OF THE ANGELS Church of Our Lady of the Angels Pastoral Staff rector Fr. Peter Kirwin, ofm [email protected] Be an everyday disciple Today’s readings indicate a sense of urgency in following Jesus. Do we Fr. Joseph Schwab, ofm [email protected] feel that same urgency that led the deacon Dcn. Hervé Lemire, ofm [email protected] disciples to leave their boats and Paul in residence to write about time running out? For Fr. Alonso de Blas, ofm [email protected] myself, I can’t say I feel that urgency. I feel that there is [email protected] x124 Fr. Catholics are everywhere in this society. We are corporate executives and migrant farm workers, senators and welfare recipients, university presidents and day care workers, tradesmen and farmers, office and factory workers, union leaders and small business owners. Catholics are called to be instruments of God’s grace and creative power in business and politics, factories and offices, in homes and schools and in all the events of daily life. Social justice and the common good are built up or torn down day by day in the countless decisions and choices we make. Today is the day and now is the hour to live with the awareness that Jesus calls us to follow him in our everyday lives and in doing so, transform the world. Page 2 • RENEWAL • thecasa.org LITURGY CONNECTION Simple Thoughts... A life of faith is not “business as usual.” ~ Comfort is often something we would describe as good. “My life is comfortable, secure, sound and satisfied.” We may even strive to reach a place of comfort in life. We may like the way we live and where we live. We like our routine and the comfort of our familiar life. We like knowing what is ahead and what is coming down the path. When we don’t feel this way, we don’t like it. It’s uncomfortable! This is neither a bad nor good thing, until we apply it to our faith life. Our readings today call us out of comfort and they promise us that when we leave our comfort zone and step out in faith, God will work great things in and through our lives. In the 1st reading, Jonah finally arrives at Nineveh. If you recall the story of the whale and everything leading up to what we hear today, I think it’s clear that this trip was a bit outside of his comfort zone. He shares God’s message, and the city repents. In the 2nd reading, St. Paul reminds us that nothing is business as usual. Because of Jesus, the world is changing. This change was experienced firsthand by the Apostles in the Gospel. They left their nets, left their comfort zone and followed Jesus. God is calling us. May we have the courage to leave our comfort zones, leave all behind and pray along with the Psalm, “Teach me your ways, O Lord.” ~The Church Staff CELEBRATING OUR LITTLE ANGELS at OUR LADY OF THE ANGELS To the parents of our young children: ~ Jesus said, “Let the children come to me.” So relax! God put the wiggle in children; don’t feel you have to suppress it in God’s house. ~ Sit toward the front where it is easier for your little ones to see and hear what’s going on at the altar; they tire of seeing the backs of others’ heads. ~ Quietly explain the parts of the Mass and actions of the ministers and sing the songs & pray the responses. Children learn liturgical behavior by copying you. ~ If you have to step out during Mass with your child, feel free to do so, but please come back in. By your example, you will teach them that it is courteous and respectful to stay until the end. ~ All are welcome here. Remember that the way we welcome children in the church directly affects the way they respond to the Church, to God, and to one another. Let them know that they are at home in this house of worship. To the members of our community: Special Collection This Week This weekend, we will participate in the annual Special Needs collection for the Church in Latin America, the Church in Africa, and the Church in Eastern Europe. The presence of children is a gift to the Church and they are a reminder that our community is growing. Please welcome our children and give a smile of encouragement to their parents. For those of you who have opted to use the Collection Envelope Boxes, you will find an extra envelope for this If you or a loved one are sick or home- special collection in your box. There will be only one bound and for any reason you cannot attend collection during Mass, so please drop both envelopes (your Mass, please call the Casa’s Front Desk, and weekly Casa gift and special collection gift) in the collection members of this community will arrange for basket. (Pancakes too) In today’s Gospel, Jesus calls his followers to walk in the way of faith. Simon, Andrew, James and John drop everything to follow Jesus. These fishermen put aside their nets so that they can follow Jesus and become fishers of people. They choose to change their lives and walk in faith. Today’s Gospel shows how all believers are called to a new way of life, a life of faith. Jesus calls us to be fishers of people. If you were going to catch people for Jesus, what kind of bait would you need? Read Mark 1:14-20 and discuss: Are you the parents of babies, toddlers or kindergartenage children? Looking for a place and way to meet other Casa families? January 25: Third Sunday of Ordinary Time • • • • How does Jesus call the fishermen? What do they choose to do? How will the lives of the fishermen change? Why do they follow Jesus? Fun Foam Fish: Use brightly-colored foam or cardstock paper and 2 small self-stick magnets for each fish. Use a fish outline to cut a fish from the foam. Now use an outline or by freehand cut out the letters J-e-s-u-s from other colored foam and glue onto the fish. Attach the magnets, and you have a refrigerator magnet to remind you of following Jesus. Fishers of Men Snack: Make blue JELL-O according to the directions on the box. Pour into clear plastic cups and cool until partially set, about an hour. When partially set, place gummy fish in the cup, refrigerate until set, then enjoy while reading and discussing the Gospel story. Concluding Prayer: God of love, source of mercy and compassion, weave your dream for the world into the fabric of our lives. Transform us so that we may accomplish your purpose. Surround us with your love, fill us with your grace and strengthen us for your service. Empower us to respond to the call of Jesus. Make us your disciples. Amen. Join us for a pancake breakfast on Sunday, Feb. 15 at 10:30 am (right after the 9:15 am Mass). I also envision how he delights in being at home with his family and enjoying the benefits of healthcare and retirement funds. Image the joy he discovers with the ability to participate in reinvesting in his own community. This is a simple example of a win-win for everyone. My eyes were opened widely after participating in JustFaith. Our world is full of hurt, and I wanted to participate in making a difference. A few of my JustFaith companions and I traveled to Douglas, Ariz. and Agua Prieta, Mexico to learn first-hand about border issues. While there, we were introduced to the Café Justo cooperative. The cooperative is composed of a group of bean growers and roasters who market coffee through many groups in the United States. As a result, growers and roasters earn a living wage and can stay in Mexico. It’s a win-win for everyone. Upon our return, the Casa Grounds for Solidarity Ministry was formed five years ago. By selling 1,200 bags of coffee, we support one family for a year. The bean growers do the hard work. My part is easy, and it makes a difference. Isn’t this what we are called to do? I encourage you to consider participating in our ministry. It is a grassroots win-win for everyone!” — Susan Doherty Contact [email protected] for more information on how to join this ministry. The Walking with Saint Francis Retreat offers healing insights from one of the most beloved but misunderstood saints. Most people don’t know that St. Francis was a prisoner of war who faced a number of hardships and challenges before having a profound religious experience. We will explore how the call of the warrior intersects with the call of spirituality. We will examine challenges confronting veterans from the life of a saint who rose from the ashes of combat to become an icon of peace. We will look at the life of St Francis through the eyes of Joseph Campbell’s “The Hero’s Journey” and Harry Moody’s “Five Stages of the Soul.” Compassionate Communication helps develop skills so that you can: • accurately identify your feelings and needs • authentically express yourself in the moment • request what may meet your needs • build relationships based on compassion and understanding • be assertive and be able to negotiate at the same time • break patterns of thinking that lead to anger In our world today, we need to be more aware of the words we speak and what impact they will have on others. *Core course for Nonviolence Leadership Certificate Program. His kindness and humor bled a spirit that I would later find resonating all throughout the Casa. I took the job as General Manager and gradually became transformed by the Franciscan way. In St. Francis of Assisi, I became more aware of a man radically committed to Christ. I learned to release my personal needs and be open to serving others. In 17 years, I have encountered thousands of “saints” and sinners who each have taught me the wonder and awe of God. I hear Since 1951, the Casa stories that bring has been renewing lives through spiritual growth, tears to my eyes healing and transformation, each week, and and serving others. I’m honored to experience the many miracles of healing and spiritual growth encountered through the Spirit in the Casa. The specialness of the Casa, for me, is the Spirit alive in the people of God here. When you give, give generously and not with a stingy heart; for that, the LORD, your God, will bless you in all your works and undertakings. - Deuteronomy 15:10 Discover what you don’t know about the Casa Have you ever wanted to know more about what the Franciscan Renewal Center has to offer?
