Siamese

they have specialized gills that
allow them to take

The Siamese Fighting Fish is a
labyrinth fish from South East Asia.
They were discovered 150 years
ago and have been a popular
aquarium and display fish for
many years. Great for beginners
and experts, this is a beautiful fish

Fighters
including

small
aquariums and large bowls – even an established
community tank. We recommend no less than 2 litres in
size for the best quality of life for your Fighter. If you
keep your fighter with other fish, make sure to avoid fin
nippers such as Barbs or Sharks. Don’t keep with other
long flowing finned fish (such as Guppies) as the fighter
may mistake them for a rival.
Care
Siamese fighters are native to South–East Asia and
therefore require temperatures between 24-30c. This
is easily maintained in summertime but not in winter.
Small aquatic environments have trouble regulating
temperatures and heaters are recommended during the
winter and in cold air conditioned spaces. Cold air may
damage the labyrinth organ that Fighters use to breathe.
Feeding
Bettas are easy to feed and will take most prepared food.
They also like live blackworms. We recommend high
quality foods such as New Life Spectrum Betta Formula
or Hikari Betta Bio-Gold. Bloodworms should be used as
a treat only. Feed your Betta a shelled pea once every
fortnight to prevent bloat and constipation.

Setting up your aquarium
As with all fish Betta are sensitive to chemicals and
pollution so careful neutralising of tap water must be
taken.
Pet City Mt Gravatt recommends Seachem Betta
Basics as it neutralises heavy metals and lowers the pH.
Regular water changes are a must in all aquariums. We
recommend 20% to 30% be changed out weekly. Also top
up the tank regularly with neutralised water. Pure water
evaporates and leaves nitrogens and waste behind!
There are many different
types and colours of the
Betta species family. This
family not only includes
Siamese fighters but also
Paradise Fish and Gourami.
Pet City Mt Gravatt – Mt.Gravatt
carries
your
common
Veiltail Fighters and we also
specialise in wild-type betta
and quality fancy tailed
Betta splendens. We have
a fighter to match your
décor, your style, and your
tropical aquarium.
Life span
If you require any
further information
on any aspect of fish
keeping please do
Siamese fighting fish can live up to 2-5 years (averaging
2-3 years) and usually grow about 6cm in length. Males
generally have brighter colours and longer fins. Male
Betta splendens will not tolerate each other, but some
wild types may be kept in groups. Females may be kept
together although some squabbling may occur. Pet City Mt
Gravatt – does not condone “fighting” and will not sell Bettas
for this purpose.
