The Calgary Performing Arts Festival is a registered charity: #12953 9235 RR0001. We’ve taken on a new name and in the spirit of evolving and expanding our range, it was with great pleasure that we announced new classes for the 2015 Calgary Performing Arts Festival at a media conference on November 21, 2014. They include: • Popular guitar solos and ensembles – otherwise known as rock bands - for those up-and-coming blues, jazz and folk guitarists. • Performance piano – non-competitive with no adjudication, just an opportunity to perform anything from classical to popular music for a supportive audience. Teachers of popular guitar had suggested that the Festival expand to showcase the talent and commitment of students motivated by playing contemporary genres, and we listened. Recognizing the Festival’s future relies on a willingness to remain contemporary and relevant, our Board has an expanded strategic mandate to welcome a range of performance categories to the Festival stage. The wonderful thing about the performing arts is that it’s always changing and evolving and the Festival will continue to evolve with it. We’ve introduced the exciting changes for the 2015 Calgary Performing Arts Festival, but I want to briefly touch on some important things that will remain unchanged: • Calgary’s festival will remain as one of the leading amateur performing arts festivals in North America. • Once again we will provide over 10,000 children and young adults the opportunity to perform, compete for scholarships, listen to their peers, and have their performances critiqued by adjudicators of national renown. • We will continue to inspire and encourage amateur performing arts in our community! It is with great anticipation that we finalize preparations for the 2015 Calgary Performing Arts Festival but as we do that, it’s important to let you know that this will be our last year at the Jube. After more than 50 years in this facility, Festival 2015 will mark our last in the building we’ve come to know as our home. In 2016, we will be moving to the Mount Royal University Conservatory building which is currently under construction. Many thanks to all the staff at the Jube for your help over the years – we will miss you. See you at Festival! Festival etiquette... DO’S & DON’TS BEFORE THE FESTIVAL DO note the day, time and location of your performance(s). DON’T hesitate to contact the Festival office if you have questions. DO mark the bars in your music score. DON’T bring photocopied music or speech selections. It violates copyright. ON THE BIG DAY DO give yourself plenty of time to find parking and get to your performance room. We recommend arriving 15 minutes before the start of your class. DON’T interrupt the other performers if you arrive late. Hosts located outside each performance room will ask you to wait until a performer has finished before letting you enter. DO mark the appropriate page of your selection and give it to the adjudicator’s assistant. DON’T engage an adjudicator in conversation about a performance. You will receive a written and verbal assessment of your performance at the end of your class. RESPECTING EACH OTHER DO acknowledge each performance with applause. DON’T make lots of noise between performances. The adjudicator will be writing his or her assessment and will need to concentrate. DO eat before your class. DON’T bring food into the performance rooms. Most importantly, DO have fun and enjoy the Festival! alumni Spotlight c a a s I c a cott M S 2010 Rose Bowl winner Scott MacIsaac has been making waves on both sides of the Atlantic. Q: Why is the Calgary Performing Arts Festival special to you? After graduating from the Yale School of Music last spring, the 22-year-old classical pianist moved to London, England to continue his studies at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, under the tutelage of British piano virtuoso Ronan O’Hora. The Festival is very special to me because it’s where performance began for me. It was always something I looked forward to as a child. The staff and volunteers were so nice to me and I always looked forward to seeing them every year. Q: What advice would you give to our 2015 performers? With an active touring schedule that includes concerts in North America, Europe, and China, MacIsaac’s performances have earned praise for their “brio and imagination” (The New York Times). To get the latest updates on MacIsaac’s career, visit scottmacisaac.com. The Festival is a great place for young performers to learn, to work towards a goal and to make friends who share similar interests. It’s also a great way for young performers to share their musical gifts with the community. To become a talented artist requires hard work as well as passion. If a young performer really desires to become good they need to enter not just one or two competitions, but many. So, my advice is to take full advantage of what the Calgary Performing Arts Festival has to offer. Q: How are your studies at Guildhall? Guildhall is a great school for me after Yale. Europe is a good place to go for classical music training as that’s where it originated. I’ve also had the opportunity to attend concerts featuring incredible artists you won’t find anywhere else in the world. Q: How has the Calgary Performing Arts Festival helped prepare you for a career as a concert pianist? I started competing in Festival when I was eight years old. Participating in the Festival year after year provided me with goals to achieve, as well as a platform to improve my artistic skill set. The years of competition and performance experience were great in helping me to gain entrance into Yale. Q: What performances do you have coming up? I just played some Chopin pieces in Milton Court, which is a very new concert hall with great acoustics. I will be playing some solo pieces in France in February and then a Chopin 1st concerto in London. I am performing with a pianist from New York in a Russian Duo Piano Concert in early May, which should be really fun. I am also scheduled to play a solo recital here in London in the middle of June.
