Employee Food Drive July 13–27 to Benefit Minnie’s
All departments are invited to participate in “Hunger Doesn’t Take
a Vacation,” the annual MCP summer food drive sponsored by the
Employee Advisory Group.
Departments must deliver donations to The View on Wednesday
the 27th between 8:30 and 9:30 a.m. The campaign benefits
Minnie’s Food Pantry, a Plano-based 501(c)3 non-profit organization
that is 100 percent donor-funded. Minnie’s provides healthy,
nutritious food and red-carpet treatment to every person it serves in
our community.

Makes its Debut
Watch for “MyHealthOne,” our new
patient portal, on MCP’s public website
at themedicalcenterofplano.com.
MyHealthOne is the successor to the
MEDITECH patient portal. When
accessing it through the public website,
patients will be redirected to a page on
which they will be asked to set up a
MyHealthOne account.
Information in the MEDITECH
patient portal automatically flows over to
MyHealthOne. Patient records are visible
there for a rolling period of 366 days.
The expanded range of capabilities
available through MyHealthOne
enhances its value to our patients.
• “Find a Doctor,” “Make an
Appointment,” and “Classes and
Events” are now found in one place,
along with clinical information.
• Redesigned screens create a more
user-friendly experience.
• Users can now create a profile,
which lets them view a personalized
history and health information.

5th Floor Nurses Pursue Professional Development
In support of “Excellence Always” and MCP’s quest for designation as a
Level 1 Trauma Center, 5th Floor Ortho/Trauma RNs attended Trauma
Care After Resuscitation (TCAR). The course is specifically designed for
nurses involved in acute care, critical care, and perioperative care.
TCAR gives inpatient staff members the foundational, evidencebased information and critical thinking skills necessary to meet
regulatory requirements and provide excellent care to a challenging
patient population. F

EVS Industry Veteran Joins Leadership Team
Maria Martell
Please welcome Maria Martell, our new EVS Director,
who recently completed her first month at MCP.
Maria previously held a similar position at Sodexo. A
Dallas native, she now resides in Little Elm, where her
household includes a furry friend named Peanut.
Maria has three sons, a daughter, and five
grandchildren. Her recreational pastimes include fishing
and traveling. F
New Pharmacy Manager Got Her Start at MCP
With a little more than a month under her belt, Anita
Rahman is settling into her new job as a Clinical
Manager in our Pharmacy.
Prior to her receiving that appointment here at MCP,
she served as a Clinical Pharmacy Specialist for Internal
Medicine in the Parkland Health and Hospital System.
Anita embarked on her pharmacy career right here at
Anita Rahman
MCP in 2004. She names the late Gita Patel as her
primary professional mentor.
A native of Dallas, Anita received her academic training at the
University of Houston. She and her two children reside in Plano. She lists
reading and spending time with friends and family as her favorite leisuretime activities. F
Case Manager Elevated to Supervisory Role
Congratulations to Jennifer Yaklin, who was recently
promoted to Case Management Manager.
Jennifer joined the HCA family in 2012 as a staff
nurse/relief charge nurse. She moved to the Case
Management team in 2015, and three months ago was
appointed to the position of Lead Care Coordinator.
A native of College Station, Jennifer attended college

at Texas A&M, and received her graduate-level training
in the nursing program at UT Health Science Center in San Antonio.
Jennifer and her husband have two children, and are expecting a third
later this year. The family resides in Frisco.
In Jennifer’s leisure time, she is a passionate scrapbooker, and also loves
to travel. F

Contentment
What is contentment?
A state of contentment is one in
which the happiness we experience is
not dependent upon circumstances.
Most people, on the other hand, get
caught in “when” thinking – “When I
get married, then I’ll be happy ...,”
“When my health improves ...,”
“When my aging parents get the care
they need ...,” “When my investments
come out right ...,” “When the kids
move out …,” or “When I retire ….”
The ancient Chinese philosopher
Lao Tzu is quoted as saying, “Be
content with what you have; rejoice in
the way things are. When you realize
there is nothing lacking, the whole
world belongs to you.”
In Philippians 4:11, the Apostle Paul
writes “Not that I speak from want,
for I have learned to be content in
whatever circumstances I am.” Here,
Paul uses the verb “learn” to refer to
a series of events that produce in us
a clear, coherent picture of reality.
The very kinds of experiences we
often regard as overwhelming are
the very ones Paul claims have
helped him learn the secret of peace
and contentment.
In 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18, he writes
“Be joyful always; pray continually;
give thanks in all circumstances, for
this is God’s will for you in Christ
Jesus.” Contentment, therefore, is the
choice by faith to be joyful and
thankful to God no matter what the
circumstances are.
Discontent arises when we start
comparing our own circumstances
with those under which others
operate. We buy a new cellphone, and
a week later a friend gets one that’s
still newer, and decked out with a
wider variety of bells and whistles.
Now you want what he has.
Driving down the road you see the
cars in front of you slowing down.

Chat With Charles
Since June 2015, we have been
conducting regular “Chat with
Charles” meetings with staff
members who have been here 90
days or less. The idea is to give these
new employees an opportunity to tell senior leaders what
has gone well during the onboarding period, and also tell
them where there may be opportunities for improvement. We’re happy to say that there have been a number
of issues we’ve been able to resolve with the input
received. You spoke, we listened! There are also some
things we won’t be able to change or adjust, and some
things it may be possible to change or adjust at some
point in the future. Here are just a few examples.
Lab Space
A request was made that the size of the microbiology lab
be increased.
Resolution: Currently, there are no plans to expand our
laboratory space, including the portion of it allocated to
microbiology. However, with the addition of the second tower in
the near future, this will be re-evaluated with an eye to
accommodating growth.
Clean Beds and Transporting
It was reported that beds were being placed in hallways with sheets
draped across them for pick-up by the Facilities team. The draped
sheet signifies that the bed is clean and ready to be taken to storage.
However, it was discovered that some of these beds were, in fact,
not clean, which presents a hazard to those transporting them.
Resolution: Director of Operations Wray Borland discussed the
situation with EVS supervisors. Med/Surg Director Tabitha South
then took the report to bed huddle so that information on the
correct procedure could be disseminated throughout the house.
Supply Rooms on Each Unit.
The supply rooms on each floor are set up differently, which poses a
problem for new employees who provide services to patients on
many floors. Time is lost trying to find the supplies needed.
Resolution: Discussed with staff leaders who travel throughout
the house, and also with Materials Director Ken Stevens. Floors
have differing needs, and supply rooms are stocked accordingly.
New employees in time become familiar with where needed
supplies are located.
Paying Out-of-Pocket for ACLS Training
A new employee had heard that employees have to pay
out-of-pocket for ACLS training even though it’s a
professional requirement.
Resolution: ACLS, BLS, and PALS training are all provided free
of charge to employees whose job descriptions require the
corresponding certifications. MCP uses the American Heart
Association’s online courses, which are the gold standard in the
industry. Learners complete an online portion and then attend a
skills checkoff – all at no charge.

There’s construction ahead. Now you want to be at the
front of the line where those other cars are. So you start
cutting people off, jockeying for position, just to save a
few seconds, and all because you think your forward
progress should take precedence over everyone else’s.
Chuck Swindoll has written, “Happiness is 10
percent what happens in your life and 90 percent how
you respond to it.” Attitude is paramount. As a Greek
philosopher once said, “to those for whom little is not
enough, nothing is enough.”
If you can’t experience satisfaction and contentment
with your current relationships, cars, houses, and
income, and see them as the result of the divine
resources of God, then you will never be at peace. This
is because you’re interpreting your circumstances in
light of a scale of measurement that’s always moving.
Contentment is not a future event! It is not something
external, but rather a condition of the soul that results
from our choice by faith to trust God with all that we
are and have.
Are you struggling with discontentment that is eating
at your peace? First, give thanks to God for what He
has entrusted to you. Next, lay before God the area in
which you’re discontented, and ask Him whether it’s
the result of your own desires or has arisen out of a real
need. Now trust God to both show you what you need
to do, or not do, about that area of your life.
“And now, dear brothers and sisters, one final thing.
Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and
right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about
things that are excellent and worthy of praise.” –
Philippians 4:8 (New Living Translation).

ICU Patient Keeps Her Date With a Diploma
Thanks to the
kindness of the staff
in our ICU, Julianne
Ennis didn’t miss
her high-school
graduation
ceremony – despite
injuries that made it
impossible for her to
leave the hospital.
Julianne’s story
was recently the
subject of
heartwarming
coverage on both KDFW-TV/Channel 4 and WFAA-TV/Channel 8,
as well as in Plano Profile.
Julianne was admitted to our ICU with multiple bone fractures and
blood clots in both lungs. On May 13, she and several classmates from
Canyon Creek Christian Academy had been involved in a serious
boating accident while on a senior trip. When it became clear that the
severity of Julianne’s injuries would exclude her from participation in
graduation exercises at Canyon Creek, our ICU staff arranged to bring
the graduation to her.
Only six days after her accident, Julianne was wheeled into her
very own graduation ceremony at MCP, complete with cap, gown,
and diploma.
Arrangements for media coverage of the ceremony were
coordinated by MCP’s Community and Public Relations team. F
MCP acquitted itself exceptionally
well on the survey performed June
10 by the College of American
Pathologists (CAP).
Only nine deficiencies were
identified in the course of an assessment
that looked at more than 3,000 separate
parameters. The CAP survey extended
to all of Laboratory Services’ operations
on MCP’s main campus, as well as
those conducted by the PBED lab and
the Cardiology and Respiratory
Therapy departments.
Only three deficiencies were noted
for Laboratory Services, one each for
Cardiology and Respiratory Therapy,
and five for the PBED. The CAP
inspection team commended the MCP
staff persons with whom they met as
having been “friendly, helpful, smiling,
and engaged.”
The survey gathered information on
the proficiency and productivity of the
nation’s clinical laboratories with
respect to techniques and instruments,
workload per-technician, total tests
performed, and cost per-test. F
Student Rotation/Observation Policy Reminder
All student rotations, including observation requests, must be processed in
accordance with policy 900-RI-101 Medical, Clinical, and Observation
Students and Practicing Professionals; policy available in Compliance 360.
To ensure the student completes all the required documentation,
orientations, and badging in a timely manner, please initiate these requests
a month prior to the student rotation or observation start date.
Clinical rotation requests require a school-affiliation agreement between
HCA and the student’s school before we are able to process the student.
School affiliation agreements can take a few months to implement.
Observation rotations require a student to pay out-of-pocket expenses for a
specific background check as well as provide a number of other
requirements including health immunization records and HIPAA training
and attestation.

approximately 1,500 annual placement requests. However, some student
requests are not possible/feasible due to a variety of factors.

Our July Wellness Wednesday, on the 20th, will help

infectious diseases you most need to guard against
this vacation season – including Lyme disease, and
the serious illnesses caused by the Zika and West
Nile viruses.
Drop by the Coit Street Café and get your
“healthy lunch” special. Then visit our “Wellness
Wednesday” table and pick up vital information
about infectious diseases. While you’re at it, put your
name in the hat for our next random drawing. We’ll
be giving away Rewards points, meal tickets, movie
tickets, t-shirts, and more. F

A Message from the CEO, Charles Gressle
Happy July 4th!
As we look forward to all the festivities
that go with the observance of the
Independence Day holiday, let’s take time
to reflect with gratitude on the principles that have guided
us since our nation’s founding, and to remember those who
have defended our freedoms down through the years, and
particularly those serving in our Armed Forces today.
Many members of our MCP family have loved ones on
active duty right now. Let’s keep all of them in our
thoughts and prayers this Fourth of July. We are deeply
indebted to them for their service and self-sacrifice.
Now, on to the rest of what’s happening this month.
Employee Survey Results
The results of this year’s Employee Survey are in. Each
department will now prepare its own action plan based on
the strengths and opportunities identified in the survey.
The outcome of the process will be an improved work
environment for all concerned. We’ll be sharing news on
our overall results at the upcoming Employee Forums.
ED Renovation
Meanwhile, the renovation of our Emergency
Department is well underway. It’s a $5 million project to
update the entire department, from triage to discharge,
and add five new patient rooms. The “refresh” is expected
to continue into the early fall. Thank you to everyone for
your cooperation and assistance while this major project is
under way. Please be especially attentive to the needs of
our guests as they navigate their way through and around
areas in which construction is taking place.
Cap Survey
In the area of Quality, we’re very pleased about our
excellent showing on the survey conducted last month by
the College of American Pathologists (CAP).
Congratulations to staff members in the laboratories here
on our main campus and at the PBED, as well as those in
Cardiology and Respiratory Therapy. The CAP survey is
conducted every two years to ensure compliance with more
than 3,000 laboratory standards. The fact we passed with
flying colors is a testament to the caliber of our employees,
and the close attention they pay to maintaining the highest
standards of patient care.

including, but not limited to, the Annual Food Drive, Ice
Cream Soda Day, and, on July 30, our very first MCP
Volleyball Tournament. Just above, we alluded to the

Emergency Department
Expansion
If you noticed the changes in the Atrium
Lobby the last few weeks, you already
know that the main ER is undergoing a
$5 million dollar “refresh” to update the
entire department from triage to
discharge, as well as add five additional
patient rooms. During the project the
triage desk has been temporarily
relocated to the chapel, along with
patient seating in the Atrium Lobby.
The renovation project will conclude in
the early fall. F
