2 3 Crochet a little hat These little hats are perfect all year round and can be made in a variety of colors and yarns. Worsted wool, acrylic, cotton, soft wools make these hats adorable and comfortable for any season. You can find the pattern below, plus a step-by-step tutorial showing how to join a new color of yarn to your project, and a hat size chart (on page 7) you can use to determine how big to make hats for different ages. Have fun! Strawberry or Raspberry Crochet Crochet Hat Pattern This pattern is for size 0 - 3+ months. You can adjust the pattern for the size of your choice using the head size chart at the end of this post. Just change the number of stitches and rows until it reaches the number of inches specified in the chart. Size I/5.5 hook, size G/6.0 Red or pink worsted weight yarn for berry Green worsted weight yarn for stem Yellow or white worsted weight yarn for strawberry seeds Stitches used: Sc, dc, sl st, seed st Seed stitch: (sc in next st, dc in next st) across Ch 39. Row 1: Seed st: (Sc in 1st st, dc in next st) across. Ch 1, turn. Rows 2 - 28: Seed st: (Sc in 1st st, dc in next st) across. 4 Your piece should be a rectangle approximately 4" high by 14" long. Continue to scalloped edge if desired, or to finishing step if no scallop is desired. Don't fasten off yet. Scalloped edge: For a less prominent scallop (like pink example), change to a G hook now. For a more noticeable scallop, keep working with your I hook. Ch 1, turn. Begin working scallop stitch along long side of piece: (Sk st, 3 dc in next st, sk st, sl st in next) across. Don't fasten off yet. Finishing: If you're making a strawberry hat, use a yarn needle and your yellow or white yarn to make small, evenly spaced stitches from back to front to create seeds. On the red strawberry I did a single little stitch. On the pink strawberry I did a tiny "V" stitch. I did a stitch on every other row across and down, creating a diamond pattern. Fasten off. Inside of hat will look like this: 5 Next, fold piece in half, matching up short sides and scallops. Holding short sides together, use a yarn needle and matching yarn to stitch short sides of piece together to make a tube (easy way). Or, for a less visible seam, join the ends using your hook and the seed stitch, working sts in end of each row (a little more complicated, but worth it if you're up for it). You should work about 28 sts. Fasten off. Green top and stem, no leaves: Change to size G hook. Round 1: Join green yarn to top of tube with a sc. Sc around top of tube (39 sc worked). How to join a new color of yarn in crochet: Insert hook where you want the color to start. Grab your new color of yarn with your hook. Pull the yarn through the stitch. One loop on the hook. 6 Now finish your single crochet stitch by yarning over and pulling the yarn through. It's on! Now continue on with your sc in the remaining stitches. Round 2: Dc 2 together (2tog) around (this is a decrease st that will decrease your number of sts around by half). Round 3: Dc 2tog around. Additional rounds: Sc 2tog around until stem is at desired width. Then sc in a 7 tiny circle (this can be challenging, so be patient with yourself!) around and around until stem is desired length. Fasten off and weave in ends. Green with leaves Round 1: Join green yarn to top of tube with a sc. Sc around top of tube (39 sc worked). Round 2: Dc 2tog around until you have 8 sts left. Leaves: Ch 10. Sc in 1st ch from hk. Hdc in next ch, dc in next 3 chs, tc in next chs, sc in next 2 sc. Repeat 3 more times. 8 Size Chart for Crochet Hats 0 to 3 months Hat circumference 11.5" - 13" Hat height: 4.5” to 5" 3 to 6 months Hat circumference: 14" - 17 " Hat height : 5.5” - 6" 6 to 12 months Hat circumference: 16" - 19 " Hat height: 6.5" 12 months to 3T Hat Circumference: 18" to 20" Hat height : 7" 3 to 10 years Hat Circumference: 19" – 20.5" Hat height: 7.5" Pre-teen to teen Hat Circumference: 20.5" - 22" Hat height: 8” - 9" Women Hat Circumference: 21.5" - 22.5" Hat height: 10" Men Hat Circumference: 23" - 24" Hat height: 10" - 10.5" If you make this hat, I'd love to see a picture of it! Slip stitch into the center of the hdc. Slip stitch into both chains of ch 2. Slip stitch into the tr. Slip stitch into both chains of ch 2. Slip stitch into starting stitch (bottom of heart). Finish slip stitching into each stitch around the crown. Finish off and weave in your ends. 15 Attaching Crown to Hat: Slide crown over the beanie. Line up the seams. Also make sure you still have a row of sc from the beanie showing under the crown. You will need this row to attach the hair. With yarn needle and yarn to match crown, attach the crown in the back 4 or 5 stitches and in the front 5 stitches. The reason you do not attach the entire way around is so that the hat will still be able to stretch around the head if needed. Use a small amount of matching yarn to attach the center of the heart to the beanie. Add Yarn Braids: Cut 30 strands of yarn about 3 feet long. Starting at the stitch next to the seam attach yarn into each stitch for 15 stitches. Repeat and do the same on the other side of the seam for 15 stitches. Attach 1 strand of yarn into each stitch (folding to make 2 strands). To attach the yarn, fold the yarn in half and insert hook from the inside of the hat out (on bottom stitch of the hat). Hook your yarn where it’s folded and pull through to form a loop. Yarn over and pull the strands of yarn through the loop. Using the seam as a divider, braid both sides. You can use small hair ties at the bottom of the braids. Abbreviations: ch chain, sc single crochet, hdc half double crochet, dc double crochet, tre treble crochet, fsc foundation single crochet, ch 3 counts as double crochet http://stitch11.com/newborn-princess-hat-with-braids/ 16 How to Surface Crochet or Surface Slip Stitch By Claire Ortega-Reyes Surface crochet, surface slip stitch or surface chain–the name pretty much explains itself. This technique involves slip stitches made through crocheted fabric, to make designs directly onto crocheted pieces. It is also used to smooth out the outlines when the design involves color changes. It’s a little like drawing, except we use yarn and hook instead of pen and paper–ain’t that cool? Here’s a step-by-step tutorial for surface crochet, or surface slip stitch. Before starting surface crochet, it is best to have an idea of what design to “draw.” You can even draw up charts to help you with where to place the stitches. Or use up existing charts for tapestry crochet, filet crochet, or even embroidery templates and cross stitch patterns. Surface crochet is easiest when working on a crochet piece with mostly single crochet stitches–and that is what we use in this tutorial. As with all crochet work, start by making a slip knot. And having your crochet project to embellish on standby. Attach the slip knot to the back of the work where you want to start your surface crochet design, by making a slip stitch into one of the stitches. Make sure that the stitch doesn’t show in front! 17 One slip stitch in the back of the work made. Take your hook off the working loop. From the front of the work, insert hook into a stitch near the working loop in the back. Insert hook into working loop and pull up the loop through to the front of the work. You should have something like this in the front of the work at this point. 18 Now we start making slip stitches on the surface, with the yarn feeding from the back of the work. Insert hook into next stitch. From the back of the work, yarn over. Draw yarn through loop–one surface slip stitch made! Continue working like so according to the design in mind. This photo shows five (5) surface slip stitches in a straight line. 19 Finishing: Surface crochet was easy! Say we already finished working on the design. Here’s how to finish off surface crochet work. After making the last stitch in your design, remove hook from working loop. Inserting hook from the back of the work, pick up the working loop and bring it to the back of the work. From the back of the work, yarn over, pull yarn through loop. Finish off and weave in ends. 20 These two photos show how surface crochet looks from the front and the back. The front stitches (left) look like chain stitches or a thin braid, while they look like a basic running stitch from the back (right http://www.crochetspot.com/how-to-crochet-surface-crochet-or-surface-slipstitch/
