Part of the dark underbelly of the Christmas Season is a lack of focus on Christ and putting emphasis on other things. On such thing is competition. Who can put the most lights on their house? Who can get grandma the best gift? My Andy Blankenship personal favorite is the war of Christmas attire. This is the season when people go deep into their closets and pull out the ties, sweaters, pins and bags that they save up all year long for Christmas in hopes that they may stand out as a truly festive person with tons of Christmas spirit. Thanks to a fellow named Jonathan Acuff and his website, “stuff christians like” there is a scoring system so we can know who is winning the war of Christmas fashion. iIf your sweater has a nativity scene = +1 point iIf your sweater has stockings with your kids’ names on it = +1 point for each child iIf its light is for Rudolph’s nose = +1 point iIf your light is for the star of Bethlehem over your nativity scene = +4 points iIf your sweater has actual bells and whistles = +2 points iIf every time one of the bells rings, you get excited because an angel just got its wings = + 1 point iIf your sweater has Luke 2 written out on it (the entire chapter) = +3 points iIf you have more than 5 snowmen/women = +2 points iIf it has a 3-D hologram of baby Jesus on it = +3 points While Acuff presents this in good fun and humor, the reality is his joking shines some light on the human condition. We are absolutely ridiculous and unworthy of the love and affections of God! The things we argue over; the stuff that we are convinced we must have for Christmas to matter; the great lengths we go to get certain presents. Its ridiculous and vain yet we treat these things like they are the reason for the season. Now don’t misunderstand me. I am not saying its wrong to buy a tie or sweater. I am not demonizing Christmas trees, decorations or certain colors. We are free in Christ to have and do these things. However, when the things we are free to have and do become idols that get in the way of Christ there is a problem. “For today in the city of David there has been born for you a Savior who is Christ the Lord” (Luke 2:11). This is the point of Christmas; a Savior has been born! Everything plays “second fiddle” to this truth. Make Christmas about Jesus! Because He lives, Andy Page 3 Christmas Events Senior Adult Christmas Luncheon December 4 at 12 Noon This annual event is hosted by the GEMS and is for senior adults in our church and community. Page 4 2010 Lottie Moon Christmas Offering National Goal $175 Million BBC Goal $2,000 Are we there yet? Give so they can share More than 6,400 unreached people groups would say no. But there is promising news – for the first time in history, researchers can identify the people groups that remain untouched by the Gospel. What does this mean? We could conceivably reach the rest of the world in our lifetime! Yet, because offering receipts are down, Southern Baptists haven’t been able to send as many people as God’s calling out. Let’s start to reverse that trend! This year, let’s give as much as we can to the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering so more workers can carry a witness to those waiting to hear. Southern Baptist missionaries can’t carry the Gospel to the ends of the earth without our support. How much will you give to reach the remaining lost? Think about what you are spending on Christmas gifts. Then consider giving your biggest gift to God – through the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering. Your giving matters! Think your gift to the LMCO won't make a difference? Every penny given to Lottie Moon is used to help support more than 5,000 Southern Baptist missionaries serving overseas. Last year, those missionaries reported 506,019 baptisms and 24,650 new churches. The lost are believing because you give! Fast facts about lostness Now is the time to take a fresh look at the challenges ahead and be ready to finish the task of reaching all peoples. Here’s a snapshot of the work ahead of us: • 3,724 people groups not engaged at all with the Gospel (as reported April 2010) • 6,426 unreached people groups (as reported July 2009) • 1.7 billion with little or no access to the Gospel There is much work to be done. With 45,560 churches in the Southern Baptist Convention, the task is doable, but it will take all of us, starting with Byromville Baptist Church! Deadline for Pinehill presents December 19 URGENT! URGENT! (hypothetical prayer from the lost if they even knew what to pray) Send workers; Send Bibles; Save my soul; Save my people; Send a love revival. We are hoping. We are choking. We are going to hell. Give up you small ambitions. Show us eternal living, I need to know about Jesus. Don’t you see I need to believe. Don’t let me be another eternal statistic. –Dave Davidson A “radical” study planned for January What is Jesus worth to you? This January we will study together David Platt’s best selling book Radical which will challenge us to really take that question serious. The format of this study will be like those of the Forty Days of Purpose where we will meet as small groups in homes on Sunday evenings utilizing Platt’s teaching on DVDs and group discussion. Books are now available at the church house for $10 each. They are located just outside the pastor’s office in the hallway. Contact Pastor Andy Blankenship for more information. Searching for the perfect gift? “Tis the season and everyone’s looking for discounts and bargins, but what are we really saving? What if this Christmas you choose to help save a life?
