Like a new puzzle box might appear to a small
child, college, at first glance, seems a confusing
jumble of colorful pieces. Slowly, through our pro ..
gression towards graduation, a clearer image
begins to appear. An amazing picture forms as
one connects pieces.
1-
In life, as in every puzzle, we have a frame . It is
the structure that holds, shapes, and in many
,
ways, protects the rest of the pieces. At
Emmanuel College, it is not one person or group
that holds the pieces together. Our entire
Emmanuel community acts as the fr0rlJework
supporting each individual piece.
A student's life in college is anything but simple.
From finding things to do in the Boston 9rea, involvement on campus, academics, a rnd everything in between, life can be extremely compliI
cated.

Trying to put the pieces together in life is the same
as putting together a puzzle. It takes a lot of work
and is at times frustrating and challenging. Sometimes you find yourself stuck, none of the pieces
seem to fit anymore. And just when you are about
to give up, someone comes along and finds the
piece you have been looking for.
Another year has passed us by. As we look back
and focus on the big picture, we can also stop
and appreciate how each piece, no matter how
small and seemingly insignificant, brings the
puzzle together. Through good times and bad,
we've learned not only lessons from the classroom, but also lessons in life. It's not until we look
back that we can weigh the importance of being a piece of that puzzle.

Boston
With so many events and
places to choose from,
sometimes it is difficult to
decide what to do on a
Saturday afternoon. This
group of freshman took in
a little bit of everything on
a sunny Septmeber day to
find out where they fit in
the city of Boston. Let
Becky Coleman, Stacy
Fernandes, Susan Thompson, Eliza Jones, Melissa
Dacruz, Patricia Almas,
and Jen Logan with orientation leaders Pamela
Coleman and Isabella
Agyeman-Agyekum, take
you on a tour of just a
sampling of the many sites
that Emmanuel students
.
can enJoy.

Around
Emmanuel
Take one step outside St.
Joseph's Hall and you are
guaranteed to see at least
one familiar face. Students
are always walking about
campus or enjoying the
fresh air on the quad. It is
not uncommon to witness a
class being held outside on
a crisp fall day or to see a
student reading under the
warm sun.

Sporting Emmanuel's colors of blue and gold, our
new mascot is sure to be one of the many highlights
of this year' s athletic season. But just who is in that
feathered costume?

In addition to the classroom, jobs, internships, and activities,
Emmanuel students display their talents through athletics. Being a
part of a team requires dedication and cooperation to have a successful season. Encouragement is also an important aspect in athletics,
and this year Emmanuel's new mascot will be right behind our athletes, providing motivation.

we need to succeed. These are our

... But, of course, we all like to have
a little fun once in a while. The
faculty brought the work week to a

Best Buddies
Co-Founders: Catherine Hahesy
Kristen Hartigan
"You've Got a Friend"
W
hen on~ gives of them self, they receive
somethIng unobservable to others, it is
intangible. When we do good for others there
develops a sense of connection, there develops a
friendship. From this friendship we learn more
about ourselves and about others. It opens our
minds and our hearts to the happiness and well
being of other human beings. An organization
such as Best Buddies brings two people together
to create a bond of this nature.
At right, Catherine
Hahesy is surrounded by
her Emmanuel buddies
Danielle Tice and
Michelle d' Hemecourt
and her "best buddies."
When a member of the Class of 2002
entered her sophomore year of college, she
was, like most students eager to be back.
However, when Catherine Hahesy returned she
had intention to do more on campus. Catherine
felt that there were individuals on campus that
had a lot to offer others and wanted to provide
them with new opportunities to do so.
Over the summer, Catherine attended a
Student Network Conference that introduced
her to different types of community service
opportunities. Catherine read the description
and recalled being instantly hooked to the
organization called, Best Buddies. Catherine
applied to be the College Buddy Director for
Emmanuel College. Since then, Catherine has
been coordinating with Work Incorporated to
recruit Emmanuel students and to
program events for the students
and their buddies to engage in.
Best Buddies is an international organization that pairs
college students with mentally
retarded adults . Recently, it has
expanded and sets up adult peer
relationships and helps them with
job placement. The goal of the organization is
to expand adult relationships for these Boston
residents, creating interaction that is with
more than just those that help them to live day
to day. Best Buddies is about developing that
true sense of friendship that occurs between
two people.
This past year, Best Buddies of
Emmanuel College went to the Buddyrama
Carnival at Harvard University and also
attended the Aquarium. In addition, to the
programs the Best Buddy organization
arranges, Emmanuel College buddies sometimes visit their buddies' homes in Boston.
Catherine did acknowledge that Best Buddies
has had a slow start but she is confident that
people will get more involved. She hopes
that more education and psychology majors
will see Best Buddies as a learning experience and opportunity.
In addition, Cath€rine hopes that Best
Buddies will develop connections and teach
both students and residents of Boston a
great deal about friendship and these special
members of society. Some people do not
take the opportunity to become acquainted
with someone of mental and/or physical
disability. Never realizing all that a friendship with them has to offer their lives. It is
important that we recognize the efforts and
goals of Catherine Hahesy and the Best
Buddies Organization because it truly can
teach us all a great deal about friendship and about
life. Every individual has something to offer someone
else. Sometimes people have to realize that they have
to let others into their lives and make an effort to learn
about someone else. People may be intimidated but
what they do not know or have not yet experienced.
An organization such as Best Buddies creates the
opportunity to open people's minds and teach everyone more about themselves and about others. In
return, Best Buddies offers one of the most precious
and valuable things in life, true friendship .

all her courses. She has broadened my knowledge of international

Dr. Martin has been a constant and encouraging presence during

things, I will be eternally grateful."

As we prepare to close the door on our years at Emmanuel and
open a new one into the unknown f I would like to take a moment to
reflect on our years at Emmanuel.
I remember our freshman year. We were all anxious about
being accepted by our peers and excited to discover what college
life and Boston would hold for us. We cried alone in our rooms wondering if we would ever meet friends. Little by little we met them; our
roommates f our classmates and our teachers. With these friends we
learned that we could conquer the city of Boston eager to learn
more and more in our surrounding area. After allf we were in one of
the most cosmopolitan areas of the United States.
Also with these friends we discovered ourselves. I personally
learned more about myself in my years at Emmanuel than I had thus
far. Through late night discussion with my fellow classmates f I realized
where I fitf not only academicallYf but also a person.
Four years ago f we set out to do 2000 hours of community
service before we graduated. With the help of city resources we
were able to complete this goal as a class which at one time
seemed insurmountable.
As we entered the 27 st century with Emmanuel we saw many
changes. Over four years we witnessed amazing technical advances both on campus and off. Through information technology
we brought our classrooms up to date and into the next millennium.
One of the most amazing changes during our years at Emmanuel was the start of the Colleges of the Fen way. This consortium
enabled students to enroll in classes at the other wonderful colleges Emmanuel's neighborhood. We also witnessed the plans
for major renovations of not only Emmanuel but also the Back
Bay Fens as a whole community. One change being that
Fen way Park proposed to build a monstrous new ballpark. Also
the "Sears Building" was renovated and renamed the "Landmark
Center.
Over these four years we have learned a great deal of
knowledge from our professors and thanks to them we are now
entering the working world prepared for what awaits us. We owe
our deepest most sincere thanks to the professors/ staff and
administration/ for without their help/ support/ and understanding
we would not be graduating. We should all also thank our families/ loved ones and friends for all their support. But one of our
greatest supporters during our years at Emmanuel was our college friend. We owe you the world. For me/ the friends I made at
Emmanuel will stay with me all my life. We may not stay as close
as we were in college/but you will hold a special place in my
heart always.
