2016 Springfield Municipal Band Summer Program
2016 Springfield Municipal Band Concert Season Corporate Season Sponsor Office of the Mayor City of Springfield, Illinois James O. Langfelder, Mayor Greetings! Welcome to a very special season for the Springfield Municipal Band. This year marks its 80th anniversary. For generations, music has filled our parks and streets across the community because of the great musicians who have shared, and continue to share, their love and gift of music. The Municipal Band concerts are a time honored tradition and something my father, former Mayor Ossie Langfelder, held close to his heart. The Municipal Band was recognized globally for their talents including an invitation to the American Music Festival in Graz, Austria in 1990 when my father was Mayor. He had the opportunity to travel with the band and introduced them when they performed in his birthplace, Vienna, Austria. It is a memory our family will always cherish. The Municipal Band is a true treasure to our community. Thank you to all the musicians, past and present, for sharing your talents with us. We are also appreciative to the volunteers who work tirelessly to make these concerts possible. Congratulations on this incredible milestone! May you hit the highest notes this concert season! Sincerely, James O. Langfelder Mayor Springfield Municipal Band 2016 Summer Schedule Friday May 13 7:15 PM LLCC Graduation Saturday May 21 10:00 AM Old Capitol Art Fair Saturday May 28 1:30 PM Spirited Stroll, Oak Ridge Monday May 30 10:00 AM Oak Ridge Cemetery Monday May 30 1:30 PM Camp Butler Cemetery Tuesday June 7 7:30 PM Douglas Park Sunday June 12 7:00 PM Southwind Park Tuesday June 14 7:30 PM Douglas Park Tuesday June 21 7:30 PM Douglas Park Thursday June 23 7:30 PM Washington Park Sunday June 26 7:00 PM Southwind Park Tuesday June 28 7:30 PM Douglas Park Thursday June 30 7:30 PM Lincoln Park Sunday July 3 7:00 PM Downtown 4th Concert Tuesday July 12 7:30 PM Douglas Park Tuesday July 19 7:30 PM Douglas Park Sunday July 24 7:00 PM Southwind Park Tuesday July 26 7:00 PM Douglas Park Sunday July 31 7:00 PM Southwind Park Tuesday August 2 7:30 PM Douglas Park Sunday August 13 1:00 Illinois State Fair Sunday October 4 4:00 Fall Concert, Southeast HS Monday November 14 9:30 AM Twp. I've been a financial advisor, trainer, district manager and registered principal. I have two employees and serve clients from my office at the corner of Walnut and South Grand Avenue West. I have an MBA in Marketing and Finance from the University of Illinois at Springfield (nee Sangamon State University). I have two bachelor degrees in Medical Technology and Biology from Illinois State. In addition to work, family and the band, I've been a Rotarian since 1991 and will be its District Governor in 2018. Relationship and length of time with the band: I'm a bass clarinet player with the band since 1977. I couldn't play between 19872000 due to work commitments and I was fortunate to be able to return to the band in 2001. In 2004, I asked our band's manager at the time, Rich Stuemke, if he'd mind me pursuing some marketing and public relations for the band, so people would know about us, and I presented some marketing ideas to the City during a Municipal Band Commission meeting that year. Since then, I've donated some time, energy and my own funds to helping the band publicize itself. I put together performances to commemorate the history of the band and restarted the plaque wall on Douglas Park to recognize important people who helped the band over the years. I wrote a band history that has appeared in publications like our program. In 2007, I led an effort to recognize Unit 2 of the band, the so-called " Colored " Municipal Band during the Jim Crow era, and we were able to honor seven surviving members of that band with a concert and the largest plaque on the band shell wall to celebrate their legacy. In 2010, when our season was curtailed due to the economic downturn, I worked with community leaders to do some fundraising for the band and those efforts have provided over $65,000 in additional revenue over the past six years which resulted in money to provide some additional concerts in other venues besides Douglas Park. We've also raised some money for other causes, like the Land of Lincoln Honor Flight and veterans causes. I've also enjoyed doing some announcing and lame joke telling at the band concerts and narration performing, even getting to sing the National Anthem on 9/11/14. Goals for the band: I hope we continue to grow the audience and continue the tradition of free public concerts in the parks. Arts are a fragile thing and music fads come and go. It is very unique that this type of tradition has lasted eighty years. I hope the citizens of this community will continue to enjoy it for many years to come. I love the band and it's been a very important source of joy in my life. Thanks to all of you for giving me a place to play. Springfield Municipal Band Historical Highlights Written by Brian Barstead Your Springfield Municipal Band is perhaps the longest serving musical group in Springfield. It has lasted, primarily, due to the devotion of its audience, musicians and staff and also due to the continued support from the City of Springfield. Here are some important years in the band’s history. 1830s - 1870s – Immigrants bring instruments. Bands form in the town of Springfield, becoming very popular after the Civil War. 1879 - Illinois Watch Company, then the largest employer in the city, establishes a band of professional musicians as a corporate symbol. This band becomes the “official” band of the City led by Professor Louis Lehmann. 1923 - Lehmann dies (stricken at a band rehearsal) after leading the band for 40 years with no salary. 1930s - Watch Company is sold and moved to Hamilton, IN. The Watch Factory Band continues to play. 1933 - A group of local citizens pushes a referendum to have a municipal band supported by a tax levy. It is defeated. April 14, 1936 - Band referendum pushed again. This time, with more support, it wins handily. 1937 - Ordinance passes city council to start up the band and band commission for oversight. Mayor John “Buddy” Kapp is the band’s first boss. Homer Mountz is selected as conductor. At the same time, Unit 2 (“Colored”) is also established during the segregated era for African American musicians. Lewis “Happy” Evans is its director. Both bands play in parks, parades, and civic functions. During WWII - With many musicians serving in the military, Springfield has no municipal band. Band resumes 1946. 1954 - Mayor Nelson Howarth and band commission chair Lou Hahn work to eliminate segregated bands. Two bands are merged together with blind auditions for available positions in 1956. 1959 - Roof is added on the Douglas Park bandstand to make a more permanent home for the band. The bandstand is named after Lou Hahn in 1962 after his death. 1960s - 1970s - Band plays at many locations throughout the summer. Eventually, audiences at ancillary parks besides Douglas become a harder draw. Band quits playing at Iles and Lincoln Parks and eventually at Washington Park due to lack of audience participation and extra cost of moving equipment. Focus is on Douglas Park concerts. 1978 - Gene Haas becomes director of the band with Homer Mountz taking a supporting role for a few seasons. Mountz eventually retires after 42 years at the podium. 1980 - Springfield Municipal Band is the first musical group to perform on the stage at Sangamon Auditorium during its construction. 1990 - Gene Haas, Mayor Ossie Langfelder, and band tour Austria and perform at the American Music Festival at Graz. April 2005 - Municipal Band helps kick off the weeklong opening celebration of the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Museum with a concert on its stage. July 2006 - Band celebrates its 70th anniversary with a Douglas Park concert inviting former band members. June 25, 2009 - Band season ends early as economic crisis forces the city to end financial support. Many citizens tell their elected officials they want the band to resume when things get better. Summer 2010 - Band season resumes with reduced budget forcing the ending of Thursday concerts. Donations are requested from audience members for the first time. September 2011 - Gene Haas retires after 38 years at the podium. Summer 2012 - Tom Philbrick is appointed as director. Many local businesses begin support of the band when asked to help. Staab Funeral Home is the first Season Corporate Sponsor. American General and St John’s Hospital help fund a concert. The band is able to play at other parks again – scheduling concerts at Comer Cox, Southwind (for the first time), Union Square and Washington Parks. Several businesses sponsor the publication of a program. City increases its allocation to help provide more concerts in the parks. During a record heat wave, audience donations increase substantially to augment the band budget allowing for more performances.
