Pontiac Race News
As the summer nights get cooler and the kids are all getting back to school the racing side
begins to slow down and our cars are getting ready for the winter season. Some Racing
updates from some of our members. Susan and Charles Forgere took their 1968 Firebird
and Raced in Medicine Hat on the August 8th weekend running mid 11s. John Dampf last
had his 1970 GTO at Castrol Raceway at the end of July but is preparing for the SIR Wally
Event Sept 14th in Saskatoon. I will also be racing in Saskatoon in the Sportsman Class
that same weekend. With a light month on the racing circuit, I went into the archives and
wanted to inform members on Pontiac Engines that started the drag racing craze and how
far technology has advanced with today‘s engines. The Super Duty 421 was the baddest
of all the engines in 1962 and 1963, won more trophy‘s than the 409 Chevrolet, 426 Max
Wedge and 406 Fords. We don‘t get to see these engines very often and when you do,
spend some time looking at the achievements the engineers at Pontiac created.
The Super Duty 421
The 421 Super Duty took Pontiac's very successful 389 and made it bigger all the way
around. They increased the bore by 0.030 inch to 4.093 inches and added a 0.250 inch to
the stroke for a total of 4.0 inches. The first 421 Super Duty appeared as a dealerinstalled engine in 1961, followed as optional engines for the Catalina‘s and, of course, the
SD 421 Tempests in 1963. In that year, there were three different Super Duty 421configurations.

Pontiac Race News
The single four-barrel version was factory-rated at 390 hp, sported 12:1 compression, and was
intended for NASCAR stock car racing. Adding another carburetor to the same engine pushed
the second version to 405 hp. Pontiac's big dog in the factory horsepower hunt retained the twin
four-barrel induction but added another point of squeeze to 13:1. Rated at a ridiculously conservative 410 hp (500–550 hp is more realistic), this engine was intended for drag racing.
All SD engines were equipped with forged crankshafts, forged
pistons, and 3.250-inch main journal diameters, increased over
the 389's already large 3.00-inch journals. Rod journals remained the standard Pontiac size of 2.250 inch. Four-bolt
main caps were also standard. Iron Super Duty cylinder heads
(the 980 head carried the late 1962 and 1963 casting number,
while earlier 1962 engines received 127 heads) and to keep
the inlet air temperatures cooler, both units were built without
the usual heat-riser passage. All SDs also came with one of
three mechanical lifter camshafts, referred to as McKellar cams, in reference to Pontiac chief
power plant engineer Malcolm "Mac" McKellar, who was responsible for their lobe designs.
McKellar also designed not just camshafts but also oversaw the creation of the SOHC inline-six
and many of the exotic DOHC engines that Pontiac experimented with in the late 1960s.
The Super Duty 421 engines also spawned a number of interesting factory-inspired performance
components. If you were connected to the pipeline in 1963, you might have scored one of perhaps as many as 40 or 50 two-piece "bathtub" tunnel ram intakes cast by Pontiac. Other unique
pieces included a three-barrel Carter AFB carburetor (PN 3636S) intended for NASCAR circletrack engines. Due to the GM corporate ban of late January, 1963, all engine production halted.
While successful in killing Pontiac's factory support of racing, this performance ban would last
only a few months until Pontiac again pushed the envelope with the more street worthy cars in
1964.

I purchased this 1965 Pontiac LeMans in 1996 from the 2nd owner who bought it in California in 1967 where it was fitted with a 326 cu.in. motor at the dealership and then brought
back to Canada.
In 1996 the quarter panels and trunk pan were replaced and the car body worked and
painted. I drove the car from 1996 until October 2012 when it had the entire body chromes
and metals removed. All metals were polished and re-chromed and new bumpers installed.
90% of the chrome and metals are original.
The body was completely reworked and repainted by Jerry Stanic of Edmonton.
The original 326 cu. In. engine was rebuilt and is currently stored. The car now runs on a
455 cu. In. H.O. engine. It also no w sports a M22 Muncie 4-speed transmission, Danco
racing clutch, rear drum and power Weldwood front disc brakes and all new suspension.
This ‗65 LeMans is painted in a vibrant 1997 Viper red; 3 coats of paint and 7 coats of clear.
I have kept the car as original as possible, including the stock color interior.
THIS CAR IS A DRIVER! And I will continue to put as many miles on it as possible.

Swervyn Mervyn’s
Pitstop
6:00am the alarm goes off. Time to get up and go feed my calves so we can get on the road
by 6:30.
Today was the day the AIIPC was going to Rocky Mountain House to see Merv Pidherney‘s
Garage.
We pulled out onto the highway at 6:45am, a little bit late but not bad. We were to meet the
other members at the Tim Hortons in Leduc Common. It was a little chilly in the morning but
the skies were clear and bright. With Leduc being just over an hour away we didn‘t leave
ourselves a whole lot of extra time to get there by the scheduled 8:00am departure time. But
we made it!
After a quick bite and some visiting we all prepared to head South to Red Deer. A total of 12
cars, most of them Pontiacs fired up their engines and exited the parking lot.
Now you would think that it would be easy to stay in a group for a trip like this. However,
traffic lights, other cars and a small lack of communication found 11 of us going down Hwy
2A through Wetaskiwin and Ponoka and me and Denise going down Hwy 2. After realizing
that we may have missed something, Denise phoned Dave Scragg to find out where everybody was. After a quick chat with Susan, we were able to rejoin the group in Ponoka.
With Shawn Genge in the lead we continued on to Red Deer and took Hwy 11 to Rocky
Mountain House. In Rocky we again stopped to regroup at Tim Hortons, where we could top
up our coffee cups and have a pee break. I really don‘t know what we would do without Timmies for a meeting place!
After confirming his directions Shawn once again took the lead. The pressure was on to not
get lost, since the leader who gets us lost has to buy ice cream later!
Well, Shawn delivered, he got us there with only one small detour into a historic site and out
again.
Pulling into the long paved driveway we came upon Swervyn Mervyn‘s Pitstop. We were
greeted by Merv and his wife and their little dog Chico. After many welcomes and handshakes he happily led us into his Car Palace.

Pitstop Continued
The main entrance was into a lobby type area that had a few collectible items like Coke coolers and a barber‘s chair. Then we entered the Palace, to the left of the lobby was a showroom with at least 12 vintage cars including a Desoto, a Model A Ford Pickup, some Lincolns
and Mercurys as well as a copy of the first car he ever owned, a 1956 Chev 4 door Bel Air.
He said he couldn‘t find the one he actually owned as a kid. He told me that he had sold that
car to buy a GM single axle gravel truck, which he used to start his gravel business. Must
have worked well because his businesses grew to the point where he now employs 600 people, that‘s a lot of people for a town the size of Rocky. He also told me about searching for
that first gravel truck many years later to add to his collection. A farmer had it with a grain box
on it and wouldn‘t sell it unless Merv got him a diesel truck to replace it. Well Merv did it and
now that truck is back and restored as is his first loader.
Now back to the cars. Going back thru the lobby we went to the right side and found a beautiful collection of fifties Chev products, including Bel Airs and a Corvette. In this hall there is
also a 1961 Ford Thunderbird concept car. This is truly one of a kind car as they were never
put into production in this design.
Talking with Merv further, I found out that he used to race trucks, Peterbuilts and Kenworths,
on the oval tracks in Calgary and down all the way to California. He even had a nasty end
over end rollover that can still be seen on Extreme Racing videos. Might have to Youtube
that one!
After being there for not nearly long enough it was time to go. A quick stop at Burger Baron
and some refueling for our cars too. We hit the road for the drive back home.
It was a great day with terrific people, beautiful cars and an awesome host. What more could
a person ask for!
Thank you to Merv
Pidherney and to
everyone for making
it a great day!

A little old lady was sitting on a park bench in Trailer Estates, a Florida mobile home park. A man walked over
and sits down on the other end of the bench. After a few moments, the woman asks, "Are you a stranger
here?"
He replies, "I lived here years ago."
"So, where were you all these years?", she asks.
"In prison," he says.
"Why did they put you in prison?", she continues.
He looked at her, and very quietly said, "I killed my wife."
"Oh!" said the woman. "So you're single..."

President report……………On vacation……..or out to lunch!
A friend told the blond man: "Christmas is on a Friday this year."
The blond man then said, "Let's hope it's not the 13th."
Two blond men find three grenades, and they decide to take them to a police
station. One asked: "What if one explodes before we get there?" The other
says: "We'll lie and say we only found two."
A blonde man is in the bathroom and his wife shouts: "Did
you find the shampoo?" He answers, "Yes, but I'm not
sure what to do... it's for dry hair, and I've just wet mine."
A blonde man goes to the vet with his goldfish. "I think it's got epilepsy," he
tells the vet. The vet takes a look and says, "It seems calm enough to me."
The blonde man says, "Wait, I haven't taken it out of the bowl yet."
A blond man shouts frantically into the phone "My wife is pregnant and her contractions are only two minutes apart!"
"Is this her first child?" asks the Doctor. "No!" he shouts, "this is her husband!"
A blond man spies a letter lying on his doormat. It says on the envelope "DO
NOT BEND ". He spends the next 2 hours trying to figure out how to pick it up.

Winterize Your Collector Car
Tips from the Folks at Old Car Trader
The winds of November may not quite be howling, as the song goes, but winter will still be coming sooner rather than later, and with it all of the usual preparations: having the pilot light on the
furnace checked, putting away the patio furniture, making sure the fireplace and chimney are
clean and ready for use, and storing your collectible car.
Collector cars are not the only cars stored for winter, of course, but because cars and trucks
are meant to be driven on a regular basis, classics that are only on the road for a short while
each year are even more prone to problems caused by prolonged disuse than conventional
street vehicles. Here, then, are a few precautions to help ease your collectible car through its
winter hibernation:
Fill’er Up. Keep the fuel system protected by adding a container of fuel stabilizer to the gas
tank and also filling the tank completely. Once the stabilized fuel has been added, take
the car around the block a few times, to let it work through the system. Do this just before you store that car.
Time for an Oil Change. Change the filter as well as the oil itself, and be certain that you
choose an oil that offers corrosion protection.
Bolster your Battery. Keep the battery from dying over the winter by hooking up a charger.
A Tire-some Issue. The best option for over-wintering a collector car is to store it on jack
stands, but if you don‘t have this ability, and don‘t want to remove the wheels, you
should reduce the air pressure in the tires, which will help reduce the strain on the suspension system.
Surface-ing. Protect your paint job by thoroughly washing, drying, and waxing your car. As
well, wash and dry any of the vinyl, leather, or rubber inside the car, and consider coating the seats and armrests with preservative to prevent cracking if you live in a cold, dry
climate. Rust inhibitor can be applied to any unpainted metal surfaces, as well. Then,
cover the car with a breathable cloth cover - not plastic, as the latter will only trap any
condensation and encourage rust. Also, if your vehicle is a convertible, make sure you
store it with the top up. This adds protection for the inside of the car, as well as preventing the soft top from shrinking.
Animal Control. The cloth cover mentioned above will keep rust at bay, but to keep small
furry animals from turning your car into their castle, stash mothballs inside the car, and
under the dashboard, and make sure you cover the tailpipe as well.
Insurance Issues. Make sure your car is adequately insured. There are discounts for lowuse, low-mileage vehicles that will help offset any premiums charged because the car is
a classic and has extra value. Consult your insurance agent for the best plan, and if
your car is over fifteen years old, be sure to ask about special ―collector‘s policies.‖

Winterize Your Collector Car
Continued
Storing a car for winter doesn‘t have to include shrink-wrapping the vehicle inside an impervious cocoon, and chances are that by following these tips your car will be perfectly fine in
your own garage. However, for added security, you may want to consider special collector
car storage facilities, where you can rent space in an environmentally controlled, weatherproof building. By doing these few simple steps your car will be ready to roll when Spring
brings the return of warm weather, and sunny days meant for dropping the top and taking a
drive.

1974 Pontiac GTO - numbers matching big block, 4-speed hatchback with 87000 original
miles. It is admiralty blue with white interior. There are 42 options listed on the build sheet
but I believe U17 (4 gauges behind the shifter) is rare. There were only 625 4-speed
hatchbacks built. This was the last year
for GTO (1964 to 1974) and apparently
was 2/10ths of a second faster than the
1964 389 tri-power.
