He claimed he had never heard of Jesus. Today we are called to join Peter in testifying to the name of Jesus as he does in the first reading, and in proclaiming our love for him as Peter does in the Gospel passage. The powerful imagery of John’s vision in the second reading from the book of Revelation shows us the company we keep when we have faith in the name of Jesus. We join all living creatures, “countless in number” from “heaven, earth, under the earth, in the sea; everything in the universe” (Revelation 5:11, 13). The dignity and majesty described in each reading are in stark contrast to the dark and pitiful image of Peter and the other apostles at the time of Jesus’ arrest, trial, and crucifixion. What a relief that we can all be redeemed so completely! Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co. It was my first one here and I look forward to many more as your pastor. I write this I am sitting by a window watching snow fall. That is because since Thursday last week I have been at a monastery on a mountain outside of Elmira, a small city about an hour WEST of Binghamton, NY. The snow? Well, welcome to upstate New York. To date our parish has received $99,750 in pledges/gifts toward the 2016 Cardinal’s Appeal goal of $123.500 from 114 families. For this Appeal to be truly successful, we must have support from all of our families. The Appeal is a vital source of funding for the programs and ministries that sustain the parishes across our Archdiocese. It is not too late to make your gift. Please be as generous as you can. Thank you for your kind support. THE DIVINE MERCY DEVOTION AT ST MONICA’S An image of the Divine Mercy can be found along the west side wall of our beautiful church. Please take the opportunity to join our growing prayer group at 3:00 PM every weekday. EXPOSITION OF THE BLESSED SACRAMENT Join us every Friday afternoon after the 12 Noon Mass for Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament. Following the Divine Mercy, there will be Benediction. Once again we’d like to remind you to visit our website at www.stmonicanyc.org for the latest pictures, information and updates about our parish community. Every diocesan priest is supposed to make an annual retreat. For me that retreat has taken place almost every year since 1989, at Mount Saviour’s, a Benedictine monastery that was established here in the 1950s by German monks, who wished to leave behind the large, industrial monasteries of Europe and return to their monastic roots. These monks make a living by raising sheep, bees, and running a retreat house where people are welcome to come, to pray with the monks and find time for silence. For me that silence is important. Normally my life is filled with words – prayers, lectures, speeches, homilies, meetings. At times being a priest is like being a mouth with legs! So it is important to leave that all behind for a while. To rest, to pray with people rather than lead them in prayer, and to be silent. I will return home on Wednesday . . . St. Stephen’s the Lift and April 17th . . And will of course have to hit the ground running. One of the major changes that will happen on the 17th is that the people who have been worshiping at the 11:30am mass at St. Stephen’s there finally join the people who worship at St. Monica’s, and the 11:30 am mass at St. Stephen’s will end. The lift will finally be in use by that date, and thus that mass, which was originally retained for the benefit of those who could not climb St. Monica’s steps, will not longer be necessary. This weekend is the last 11:30 am MASS at St. Stephen’s. On April 17th, people who attend St. Stephen’s will gather as usual at 11:30 at St. Stephen’s. We will celebrate a service of Morning Prayer which will last approximately 20 minutes. Then we will walk over to St. Monica’s We will bring the bread and the wine from St. Stephen’s. we will use St. Stephen’s processional cross. St. Monica’s will wait for us and we will all process in together at the start of the 12 noon mass. After mass there will be a reception were we can all get to know each other. After the 17th there will be no more 11:30 am mass at St. Stephen’s. However, on most Thursdays when school is in session, there will be a weekly mass for the students at 8:30am to which all are welcome. One last thing . . . The cardinal has appointed me District Dean of East Manhattan, a job last occupied by Msgr. Modugno. I am now basically the coordinator of the priests and parishes on the East Side of Manhattan to St. Paul’s on E 117th St. If I look a little bit more stressed or preoccupied than usual, chalk it up to that! Fr. Baker THIRD SUNDAY OF EASTER Page 4 Invitations, News, Thoughts and Prayers TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION From the earliest centuries, we know that some Christian women desired to vow themselves to a celibate life to pray and serve. Some, but by no means everyone, wanted a kind of monastic life. Others wanted to stay in the family home. By the fourth century, the church was celebrating the “Consecration of Virgins,” a rite performed by the bishop, and involving a “veiling” of the woman. It was looked upon as a form of marriage with Christ, partly because in the culture of the day a woman’s status in society was linked to a man. The prayers and ritual for the consecration of virgins were exactly the same as the prayers and ritual for the consecration of a bride on her wedding day. The public character of the rite gave the bishop the opportunity to commend the virgin to the faithful, and to threaten with punishment anyone who tried to turn her from her commitment. Eventually, the rite fell into disuse for women living in the world, and was reserved for nuns. The Second Vatican Council directed that it be revived and restored, and in nearly every diocese, single women have embraced this form of consecrated life. —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S.
