We get a lot of questions regarding installation of our columns and so we have put together the most common questions in this chapter. Here you will find the answers to most of your questions and as always if anything is left out feel free to give us a call! We didn’t want to just leave it at installation so we threw in a few tips and tricks and things to avoid when buying columns. To much education has never been a bad thing! ©2014 Worthington Millwork – American Made Architectural Products How To Install Fiberglass Columns Installing fiberglass columns can sometime be confusing or a hassle. We have broken down our installation instructions so that it is easy to install and also fast. This is simple enough that a homeowner can do it! As always if you have any questions on your installation feel free to give us a call! 1. Determine the position of the plinth by dropping a plumb line from the center of the soffit beam to the floor. Mark this point on the floor with an “X”. This mark is where you will center the plinth so that the top of the shaft will align with the soffit. (Figure 1) 2. Measure the overall height. Raise the soffit or porch slightly with brace for easy installation of the column. (Figure 2) 3. Trim column shaft on the bottom end only. Trim with an abrasive saw. (Be sure to use personal protective wear.) Finish both the top and bottom of shaft with a rasp or sander to ensure an even load distribution around the entire circumference. (Figure 3) 4. Slide cap over top of column shaft. Let cap slide down to rest on the neck mold temporarily until shaft is correctly positioned. (If installing a square column, slide neck mold over top of shaft to desired location. Fasten neck mold to shaft. Caulk between neck mold and shaft.) (Figure 4) 5. 5. Slide base/plinth onto column shaft from bottom. (Figure 5) 6. Place column in a vertical position with load centered over column shaft with even distribution around bearing surfaces. (Figure 6) 7. If installation requires that column be secured in place prior to bearing load, use small L brackets. Be careful to ensure L brackets do not interfere with seating of cap and base/plinth. (Figure 7) 8. Remove brace to allow load to bear on column shaft. (Figure 8) 9. POLYURETHANE Cap and Base/Plinth: Slide cap up to soffit and attach to soffit using corrosion resistant screws. Attach to floor using appropriate fasteners. (Figure 9) SYNTHETIC INJECTION MOLDED (SIM) Cap and Base/Plinth: Attach using corrosion resistant screws in the holes pre molded in the cap and base/plinth. Fill holes with exterior caulk or filler. 10. Caulk between cap and soffit, the cap and shaft, and the base and the shaft for a finished appearance. (Figure 10) How to Correctly Cut Fiberglass Columns Fiberglass columns are used in interior and exterior building applications, and can be custom cut to size to fit your project design. Have a question? Get answers from an expert now! If you are not comfortable with cutting your own columns to height Worthington Millwork can always cut the columns for you. Things You'll Need Circular saw with an abrasive fine-tooth blade Low-tack masking tape Marking pen or pencil Protective eye gear Instructions: Preparing for the Cut •Note: Cut from the bottom of the column when using tapered columns. 1. Place the column on its side and brace it for stability. Measure to the desired length and mark the column at the cut line. 2. Apply a layer of low-tack masking tape around the column at cutting length in order to protect the cut edge from being chipped by the saw blade. Take a moment to don protective eye gear. 3. Fire up your circular saw with an abrasive and fine-toothed blade and make the cut through the masking tape, rotating the column as needed to complete the cut. If the column is tapered, make sure to cut only from the bottom in order to keep the aesthetic and proportion of the column. 4. Remove the cut portion and the masking tape from the cut end and install it. 5 Costly Mistakes to Avoid When Buying Porch Columns Porch Columns are a good choice if you need the columns to support the weight of a structure, like a porch roof. The term that refers to this ability is “load-bearing.” In addition to being load-bearing, most fiberglass columns are also weather resistant and insect proof. Many fiberglass columns come with a lifetime warranty. Be sure to check the manufacturer’s requirements, specification and warranty information before making your purchase. The information contained in this document pertains to the most common types of fiberglass architectural columns only, and specifically does not pertain to wood or cellular PVC columns. Follow these tips for a better experience adding fiberglass columns to your project, but remember that if the instructions from the manufacturer contradict any of this information, it’s always best to follow the manufacturer’s recommendations. #1 Buying the Wrong Size Column Fiberglass columns are available in many diameters and lengths. Getting the length right may be as simple as measuring twice, but different columns, especially in widths, are designed to support different amounts of weight. This is referred to as “load-bearing capacity” and it’s a critical element in selecting the correct columns for your project. If you’re not certain of the requirements, you should consult a structural engineer or architect to verify the load -bearing requirements of the structure. From there it’s easy to choose the proper size column, but you must also be sure to have the structural engineer or architect verify the maximum space between columns. Be sure to plumb and level, with 100 percent of bottom contacting the substrate and a minimum of 75 percent of top contacting the soffit. Center the load over shaft and evenly distribute the weight around the bearing surface. Not only is it unsafe to ignore load -bearing requirements, but most manufactures warranties are also void if the load- bearing capacity is exceeded. Be sure to conform to the manufacturer’s specifications, as well as to local codes and the architect’s design criteria. #2 Bottom of the Column Does Not Fully Contact the Substrate Because fiberglass columns are load-bearing, they must transfer the load of the roof to the ground. To insure the load is properly transferred the bottom the fiberglass columns must have full contact with the substrate. Many exterior substrates are not flat and have some slope. To transfer the slope to the bottom of the column you should take four measurements. Measure from the front of the column, the back of the column and the left and right of the column. Be sure to mark the front when you draw your cut lines. Cut the column to match the slop, being sure to install the column so it has 100% contact with the substrate. #3 Failing to Pre-Drill Screw Holes There are many instances when you will need to put a screw into a fiberglass column, such as to attach a railing or to secure the column with brackets. Any time a screw needs to be put into a fiberglass column you must predrill the hole. Failure to pre-drill screw holes may cause the material to crack and chip off. This can occur on the inside of the column where it can’t be seen. A crack will weaken the column and significantly reduce its load-bearing capacity. #4 Filling the Column with Masonry Most fiberglass columns are not designed to be filled with masonry. There are applications that call for a concrete pillar, wrapped by a decorative column. In these applications you should use an expansion & contraction barrier inside the column. This allows for the expansion and contraction of the concrete, and it protects the column from undue stress, which may crack the column. Determine the position of the plinth by dropping a plumb line from the center of the soffit beam to the floor. Mark this point on the floor with a center of the soffit beam to the floor. Mark this point on the 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. 9. 10. floor with an “X”. This is where you will center the plinth so that the top of the shaft will align with the soffit. Measure the overall height. Raise the soffit or porch slightly with brace for easy installation of the columns. Trim column shaft on bottom end only. Trim with an abrasive saw. Finish both top and bottom of shaft with a rasp to ensure an even load distribution around the entire circumference. Slide cap over top of column shaft. Let cap slide down to rest on neck mold temporarily until shaft is correctly positioned. (If installing a square column, slide neck mold over top of shaft to desired location. Fasten neck mold to shaft. Caulk between neck mold and shaft.) Slide base/plinth onto column shaft from bottom. Place column in a vertical position with load centered over column shaft with even distribution around bearing surfaces. If installation requires that column be secured in place prior to bearing load, use small L brackets. Be careful to ensure L brackets do not interfere with seating of cap and base. Note: To secure bracket to column, drill hole in shaft and use through bolts. Do not use screws. Remove brace to allow load to bear on column shaft. Slide cap up to soffit and attach to soffit using corrosion resistant type screws. Attach base/plinth to floor using appropriate fasteners. Caulk between the cap and soffit, the cap and shaft, and the base and shaft for a finished appearance. 3.2 PAINTING/FINISHING 1. Make sure all surfaces are clean prior to painting. Use mineral spirits if oil or alkyd products are used. Warm soapy water should be used if latex products are utilized. 2.
