It remains the top sires stakes program in North America by offering top purses at seven racetracks across the state, which in turn encourages people to breed their mares to NY stallions. Exposure to harness racing and harness racing history at the Harness Racing Museum attracts individuals to become involved in owning and breeding horses. We are targeting our education efforts at 4-H and local riding clubs to introduce children and adolescents who are interested in horses to the world of harness racing. As I was advised many years ago, if you want to own a horse, own a racehorse that can make you money instead of just costing you -- purse checks pay bills but blue ribbons do not. Standardbreds are one of the most versatile, gregarious, trainable breeds of horse that exists, plus they are reasonably priced and readily available. Owners can participate directly with their horses by jogging and training them themselves. Janet Terhune, Director, Harness Racing Museum & Hall of Fame I think the Sire Stakes Program this year was a major success and the introduction of the Excelsior A & B Series was very well received. I had horses racing in all three groups and, as a result, the majority of the yearlings that I bought this year are New York breds. We have a terrific program and I hope we continue in the direction that we have chosen. Jeff Gural, Owner of Tioga Downs and Vernon Downs The New York Sire Stakes program is still acknowledged as being one of the best Sire Stakes Programs in North America. Not only does it supply a high level of competitive stakes performers at New York track venues, New York sired individuals continue to excel nationally. In 2014 it is very likely that 2YO pacing Filly of the Year honors will go to NY Sired JK She’salady who remained undefeated in national company. Refocusing the Breeders Awards to a “residence” only basis has also had a positive impact on New York’s Breeding program. I, as well as many of my fellow farm operators, have seen a marked increase in mare “boarding days” due to the 180 residency requirement. This has resulted in an increase in boarding revenues. In addition, many mare owners have chosen not to remove their mares from the state after the residency obligation has been satisfied, but have chosen to become permanent boarders. For Blue Chip Farm this has resulted in the need to construct additional sheds. (Continued on page 5) 4 Industry comments (Continued from page 4) The 2015 season should be an exciting one as there are a number of young New York stallions whose offspring will be making their debuts on the track or in the auction ring. To ensure their success the New York Sire Stakes program needs to continue to focus on supporting the Breeders’ agriculture commitment with a strong racing/purse structure as well as rewarding those mare owners who chose to breed and board in the Empire state. Jean Brown, Vice President, General Manager, Blue Chip Farm I am the publisher of Harness Racing Update, an industry newsletter that is read regularly by the majority of the most influential people in the business. Though I am not an owner, trainer or breeder I feel that through my work I have a very good feel for the pulse of the industry. I believe the New York standardbred breeding industry has a lot to be proud of. Though there are many great farms and outstanding breeders in the state New Yorkers are going up against an industry giant in Hannover Shoe Farms in Pennsylvania. Hanover is the New York Yankees of the harness breeding industry and they are, more often than not, able to attract the sport’s best stallions. Yet, New York more than holds its own against Pennsylvania. At this year’s two top yearling sales, Harrisburg and Lexington, New Yorker Credit Winner led all trotting sires as his offspring sold for an average of $68,545. On the pacing side, among sires who had 50 or more yearlings go through the sales ring, New York sires Art Major and Bettor’s Delight came in second and third, respectively, in terms of average sale price. The only horse to beat them was Somebeachsomewhere. There’s no one ingredient when it comes to being successful, but hard work is certainly part of the equation. From my observations, the people responsible for running and promoting the New York bred programs and sire stakes simply try harder than the competition. They promote the New York bred, they show up at industry events and even their little touches like handing a winning owner or trainer a New York Sires Stakes baseball hat go a long way. I don’t see the same efforts from their competition in Pennsylvania, Ontario or New Jersey. My one concern, and this is not just for the New York bred program but for the entire industry, is that there are not enough owners out there and the same dozen or so people are always the ones buying the most expensive yearlings. That leads to deflated prices, particularly when many of the owners form partnerships when going after a yearling rather than bidding against one another. The sport badly needs new blood on the ownership side and I would hope that more energies can be devoted toward that goal. The support received from the New York State Horse Breeding Development Fund is an essential component of the NYS 4-H program and our commitment to provide positive youth development programming to NYS youth. The program has a wide reach in both rural and urban areas and a long track record of extending resources effectively through the Cooperative Extension/4-H system. Participating youth develop skills in all three 4-H mission mandate areas (STEM, Citizenship and Healthy Living) while also learning a great deal about the economic and social impact of the NYS Horse Industry. The dedicated staff and volunteers involved in this program expose young people to a variety of equine experiences. These include tours of regional harness facilities. Monies from the Fund also help to underwrite costs associated with supplies and training of 4-H staff members. This includes updating educational materials such as books, visual aids and videos. Standardbred day clinics are another popular feature of the statewide program. Approximately 10 of these clinics are held at farms, county show grounds, local schools or county fairs, while others culminate in a race track tour and a night at the races. The support from the NYS Horse Breeding Development Fund is a critical component supporting the overall goals of the NYS 4-H Horse Program. In addition, this funding allows us to create a strong partnership with our County based 4-H educators in order to continue to offer four major Statewide 4-H Horse events. The primary objective of the NYS 4-H Horse educational contests is to provide an opportunity for youth enrolled in 4-H horse projects to demonstrate their knowledge of equine related subject matter in a competitive setting where attitudes of friendliness and fairness prevail. It is also hoped that these contests will provide educational experiences for both participants and spectators. 14 The 16th Annual USTA Standardbred Driving School The Agriculture and New York State Horse Breeding Development Fund provided a grant to the USTA for $13,900 to put on the 2014 driving school. The trainers that opened up their barns were: Scott Blackler, Amber Buter, Jean Drolet, Mark Ford, Rob Harmon, Ray Schnittker and Brandon Simpson. The 16th annual USTA Standardbred Driving School was held June 11-15 in the Goshen, NY area. Put on by the United States Trotting Association, the school teaches students the ins and outs of Standardbred harness racing. Students spent the afternoons in classroom sessions learning training and driving tips from Mark Ford, Ray Schnittker, Lon Frocione, Joe Faraldo, Tyler Buter and Jeff Gregory; equine veterinary care from Dr. Brian MacNamara; and stable management from Kelly Ford and Amber Buter. The nation’s leading trainer Ron Burke was the keynote speaker at the welcome reception on the first day of the school. There were 47 registrants for the class of 2014, 18 of which were from the state of New York. Eight of the students were considered advanced students, which meant they had attended one of the previously held USTA Driving Schools. Students spent each morning at either the Mark Ford Training Center or Goshen Historic Track working in the barn, getting horses ready, doing stalls, cleaning equipment and horses and putting horses away before lunch time. Students that were considered advanced had the opportunity to go to the racetracks with their respective stables to paddock horses that were in-to-go. Other events for the school included a tour of Blue Chip Farms as well as the Harness Racing Museum and the opportunity to participate in the USTA 15 Driving School Race at the Goshen matinee on Sunday, June 15th. The USTA’s Regulatory Liaison Kent “Chip” Hastings has overseen the school since its inception in 1999. Expenses for the 2014 school totaled just over $27,000. The 17th Annual USTA Standardbred Driving School is currently being planned; dates and location of the school will be announced at the end of November. The students are selected by their guidance office staff and then paired with a licensed trainer stabled at a track near their high school. Each track accepts five students. The students are then taught about the care, training and driving of the horses. The practice sessions are held for five weeks before the actual scholarship race. A large number of the students attend for more than the required number of classes and a number of them have gone on to acquire grooms licenses. The students compete for $7,500 in total scholarship money at each track. This have become a very successful way for the Agriculture and New York State Horse Breeding Development Fund to support higher education and educate young people about the harness horse breeding and racing industries. The local community newspapers write articles and the local television stations also pick up the stories. Five Local Students to Compete in Tioga Downs Scholarship Race Five local high school students started to prepare this weekend for the 2014 Tioga Downs Scholarship Race. The scholarship race is set to take place on June 1st, and five local students are each working with a veteran Tioga Downs horseman to learn the basics of horsemanship preparation. After three weekends of preparation, students and their partner horsemen will be racing in a double-seated jog cart during the scholarship race. The Harness Horse Breeders of New York State and the Southern Tier Harness Horsemen’s Association will then be giving out $8,700 in scholarship money, with the winner earning a $3,000 scholarship, with prizes for the remaining finishers as well, each earning at least $1,000. The students include Shania Shaver of Candor, Kayla Martin of Newark Valley, Megan Vanvorce of Binghamton, Jason Hill of MaineEndwell, and Rachael Oltmer of Union-Endicott. Rachael Oltmer wins Tioga Downs Scholarship Race by James Witherite, Tioga Downs Nichols, NY --- Rallying from off the pace with a threewide move, Union-Endicott High School student Rachael Oltmer prevailed in the 2014 Tioga Downs scholarship race, earning a $3,000 scholarship through her victory with Newyorkjoyants. Oltmer, teamed with Tioga Downs driver Corey Braden for the non-betting race, moved Newyorkjoyants three-wide at the top of the stretch, moving clear of Ten Yard Penalty (Kayla Martin/Phil Fluet) and What About Brian (Megan Vanvorce/ Mike Deters) to cover the five-eighths-mile race in 1:17. Ideal Temptation (Jason Hill/Tim Lanpher) and Isthatallyagot (Shania Shaver/Edgar “Sparky” Clarke) completed the field. Oltmer will enter the veterinary technician program at SUNY Canton in the fall. Thanks to the efforts of the Southern Tier Harness Horsemen’s Association, the New York Sire Stakes, and the New York State Agriculture Fund, the Harness Horse Breeders of New York State, all five participating students earned at least $1,000 in scholarship money 17 Congratulations JENNA KRUPSKI Scholarship Saratoga Recipient of the 2014 Harness Racing Scholarship Congratulations Congratulations Congratulations JENNA KRUPSKI JENNAKrupski KRUPSKI Jenna The scholarship was made possible thanks to a collaboration between the Agriculture and New York State Horse Breeding Development Fund, Saratoga Casino and Raceway, and the Saratoga Harness Recipient Recipient ofofthe the 2014 Recipientof the2014 2014 Horseperson’s Association. The funding provides the means for adequate personnel support and marketing as well as help with postage, educational craft supplies and other department expenses. Over the last few months, the Education Department has reached out to horse-related venues, riding instructors and farm owners in an effort to discover what educational programs they have for the youth participating at their facilities. Our equine programs have been designed to take those opportunities to the next level and to expose these students to the thrill of harness horses. More interactive games and team events are offered to encourage new individuals to participate and to encourage those visitors to return for the next level of the program. Programs include in-depth information on nutrition, anatomy, registrations and tattooing, shoeing and equine communication. We are directing youth towards the overall well being and care of horses as well as the activities for youth involvement in the harness industry. The department sent out several postcard mailings to local preschools and daycare centers encouraging teachers to bring their students for unique, age appropriate programs that aim to foster an understanding for and appreciation of the Standardbred horse. A mailing is currently being prepared to send to hundreds of local preschool and elementary schools as well as home school organizations to highlight the education programs available. We will send a flyer detailing the Museum's fun and educational programs for camps to approximately 250 local summer camps in May, which should result in several camps scheduling tours for July and August, usually with approximately 250 children. The ongoing development of programs emphasizing harness racing in the sense of sports history and art for middle and high school students is an exciting venture that will provide an avenue to interest age groups that have not yet been approached. In conclusion, the Education Department has played a significant role in educating, entertaining and promoting harness racing, the Standardbred horse and agriculture in New York State through educational programs, interaction with visitors, providing educational materials for the traveling exhibits and attending numerous outreach programs. We look forward to continuing our efforts to encourage interest in the American Standardbred and its importance to the agricultural interests in the state of its birth. 19 Agriculture and New York State Horse Breeding Development Fund proud sponsors: NY Farm Bureau calendar helps upstate teachers with their lessons by December December providing information to 3,500 third grade classes, about 12 different agricultural products (including horses) produced in New York State. Zweig Memorial Fund for Equine Research honors the late Dr. Harry Zweig, a distinguished veterinarian, and his numerous contributions to the state’s equine industry. In 1979, by amendment to the pari-mutuel racing and wagering law, the New York State legislature created the Harry M. Zweig Memorial Fund for Equine Research to promote equine research at the Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine. The Harry M. Zweig Committee was established for the purpose of administering the fund and is composed of individuals in specified state agencies and equine industry positions and others who represent equine breeders, owners, trainers, and veterinarians. Harry M. Zweig, DVM The Fund is proud to support the Harry M. Zweig Memorial Fund for Equine Research. This first-rate research helps to provide protection and preventative planning for the equine industry, which in turn helps to ensure a healthy and positive future for the horse racing industry. By law the Agriculture and NYS Horse Breeding Development Fund Fund contributes two-percent of its yearly revenue to the equine research fund. In 2014, the Fund contributed $291,462 to the equine research fund for a variety of medical research including: Recipients of the Zweig Fund Equine Research Awards • $60,960 to Dr. Dorothy Ainsworth for “Fine for “Etiology and Prevention of Equine Serum Hepatitis (Theiler’s Disease)” Mapping of Candidate Genes Contributing to Equine Left Recurrent Laryngeal Neuropathy(RLN) in Thoroughbred Horses – Phase II” • $88,499 to Dr. Bettina Wagner with Gillian Perkins for “Innate Immune Mechanisms and T-cell Responses to Equine Herpesvirus Type 1 in Latently Infected and Naïve Horses” • $49,350 to Dr. Robert Gilbert “Effect of Early Pregnancy on Function of the Equine Corpus Luteum” • $52,696 to Dr. Lisa Fortier for “Cellular Biomarkers of Early Cartilage Injury Measured in vivo with Multiphoton Imaging” • $173,259 to Dr. Alan Nixon for “Evaluation of Lubricin as a New Biotherapeutic for Equine Joint Disease” • $162,786 to Dr. Bettina Wagner for “A Novel Strategy to Boost Antibody Production to EHV-1 in Neonates” • $50,000 to Dr. Douglas Antczak with Rebecca Tallmadge and Nikolaus Osterrieder for “T-cell Mediated Immunity and Vaccine Development in Horses” • $10,000 to Dr. Rolfe Radcliffe for “En Bloc Removal of Intravascular Thrombi via an Extracorporeal Bypass Circuit in Experimentally Induced Jugular Thrombosis in Horses” • $67,000 to Dr. Thomas Divers with Dr. Bud Tennant 21 2014 Breeders’ Awards Program Performance Based Program The performance based program provides awards at all levels of the New York Sire Stakes Racing Program. Eligible recipients are those individuals or farms who bred a money-earning horse that raced in the NYSS Program. In 2014, 360 breeders shared a total of $350,000 in performance-based Breeders’ Awards. Payments to the breeder of each horse are calculated based upon a preset breeders’ awards formula that is established by the Development Fund at the end of each purse year. The formula is calculated on NYSS gross purses and allocates breeders’ awards in descending amounts based on monies won for finish positions one through five. Due to the nature in which the Development Fund receives its funding, the award amounts available each year depend upon the Fund’s actual revenue. Residency Based Program To be eligible for residency bonus awards, breeders must certify that the mare has resided in New York State for 180 continuous days in the year bred. The mare must be bred to a NY registered stallion resulting in a New York-bred foal. A Residency Bonus is awarded to breeders whose resident mares’ progeny race in the NYSS as a two-and/or three-year-old and finish in positions one through five. The total residency pool distributed for 2014 was $350,000. The breeders awards program will be shifting to an all residency based awards system. The transition will be as follows: For all foals born in 2014 or earlier, all funds available for breeder’s awards will be split into two equal pools of money. One pool of money will be for performance based awards with no residency requirements and the other will be for performance based awards with residency requirements. Resident horses will be eligible to earn money from both pools. The mares of the NY-sired foals of 2015 and subsequent years will have to obtain “residency status” in order for the breeder of record to earn any New York breeder’s awards. Beginning with mares bred to New York registered stallions in 2014 (foals of 2015) breeders awards will be paid only for foals of “resident” mares. Mares must spend at least 180 continuous days in New York in each calendar year that they are bred to a registered NY stallion. This will make them eligible as “resident” mares for breeders awards purposes. These resident breeder’s awards will be paid based on a percentage of performance earnings. Residency declaration forms must be filed each calendar year to establish and/or retain resident status. 22 Participating broodmares, stallions and yearlings in the New York Sire Stakes Year Mares Bred Registered Stallions Nominated Yearlings Year Mares Bred Registered Stallions Nominated Yearlings 2014 1,678 60 791 1988 2,777 226 1,677 2013 1,434 60 960 1987 2,768 221 1,735 2012 1,403 65 939 1986 3,118 207 2,075 2011 1,613 69 1,108 1985 3,310 246 2,167 2010 1,585 69 1,064 1984 3,794 245 2,252 2009 1,820 78 1,285 1983 4,030 280 2,352 2008 1,833 86 973 1982 4,162 260 2,153 2007 2,173 93 961 1981 4,202 230 1,647 2006 1,687 96 1,231 1980 3,750 230 1,356 2005 1,718 125 1,118 1979 3,028 230 1,233 2004 2,309 125 1,144 1978 2,601 231 1,335 2003 2,022 121 672 1977 2,460 230 1,348 2002 1,988 120 604 1976 2,750 244 1,270 2001 1,293 101 648 1975 2,719 247 1,374 2000 1,108 111 524 1974 2,896 230 1,388 1999 1,070 118 750 1973 3,063 277 1,582 1998 1,063 104 776 1972 3,439 288 1,518 1997 1,288 105 662 1971 3,823 333 1,489 1996 1,500 126 670 1970 4,020 264 1,557 1995 1,333 140 1,046 1969 4,018 271 1,235 1994 1,525 147 1,385 1968 3,713 240 1,040 1993 2,104 163 1,696 1967 2,851 198 752 1992 2,571 191 1,791 1966 2,187 197 654 1991 2,990 206 1,445 1965 1,554 193 588 1990 3,148 218 1,653 1964 1,518 174 521 1989 2,588 213 1,502 Yearlings lag 2 years behind mares bred, ie. mares bred in 2012 are foals of 2013 and yearlings in 2014 23 2014 NYSS Breeders — Top Earners Breeder of Record Hanover Shoe Farms Inc. The accompanying chart provides a comparison of purchase prices for New York-bred yearlings to the purchase prices of yearlings sold from all states from 2011 through 2014. A total of 1,089 yearlings were sold over four days for a gross of $35,917,000 and an average price of $32,982 (25.2 percent below the Lexington average this year and a wider gap than the difference between the two sales last year). The Harrisburg sale is the final sale of the season and catalogs the most horses. This has traditionally been the largest venue for top New York-bred yearlings, offering nearly 54 percent more New York-eligibles here as in Lexington. In Harrisburg, New York-breds made up almost 20 percent of the sale with 215 offered, down from 274 last year. They averaged $35,591, 7.9 percent above the overall average. Below is a more detailed analysis of the sale, beginning with day-by-day overviews. Traditionally, the most attractive yearlings, both in pedigree and conformation, are offered at the beginning of the sale. Following this information is more detailed comparative analysis of the sale results. The sale was more tempered than last year with only moderate increases or decreases in average each day. Despite a small drop in average on the first day, there was one more $100,000 yearling than the previous year; of the 41 six-digit yearlings, five were by New York sires. While this sale did not have the increases in average that Lexington had this year, it was able to hold prices relatively steady after a remarkable 19% overall increase last year. Admittedly, it would have been hard to repeat the type of growth that this sale experienced last year, but its small decline in average seemed to catch everyone off guard. New York-bred yearlings made up 19.7 percent of the Harrisburg catalog and 21.3 percent ($7,652,000) of the gross sales ($35,917,000). Trotting colts were the strongest sector of the sale overall, which is a little unusual as the pacing colts usually outshine all divisions, but this result was consistent with the Lexington sale. Pacing colts were the next most desired division, out-paced the sale average for their group by more than $5,000, or 14.4 percent. These were followed in popularity by trotting fillies and pacing fillies, which was as expected. Harrisburg Yearling Sale 41 Among New York-breds, however, pacing colts were the most desirable, followed by trotting colts and very closely by trotting fillies. Pacing fillies were the only division that lagged behind the average, but it was by just a small margin. New York’s trotting fillies actually surpassed the overall average for the division by nearly $8,000 per horse—25.5 percent above the average—a remarkable number for New York breeders to take home. The top-priced trotting filly in the sale was by New York sire Credit Winner and brought $190,000. The Garden State yearlings made a slight resurgence at this sale compared to last year, with the sale topper coming from New Jersey’s Muscle Hill. The sales results also show that the usual bias for colts, with the boys filling most of the top spots. Remarkably, in just two years, the top price-getters at this sale has transitioned from mostly pacers in 2012, to mostly trotters in 2014. However, interest in New York yearlings was weighted more heavily toward the pacers here, the opposite Harrisburg Yearling Sale 42 of Lexington this year. Although only two fillies ranked in the top 10 list for New York, they were the second and third highest prices. While many sires represented on the New York list are proven stallions, second-crop sire Rock N Roll Heaven and first-crop sire and Meadowlands Pace champion Roll With Joe each had two yearlings make the list. New York-eligible yearlings again had the second highest average following New Jersey, as they did in Lexington this year. New York’s average for trotters was behind New Jersey’s exceptionally strong $53,436, but the two states had nearly equal numbers of $100,000 trotting yearlings with New Jersey at six and New York at five. However, New Jersey had a much smaller offering than New York represented by a very small number of highly regarded stallions, which helped contribute to boosting the state’s numbers—along with a more stability in the racing industry there. On the pacing side, New York’s average was just $500 behind Pennsylvania’s leading average. New York, however, attained this average with just seven $100,000 pacing yearlings compared to Pennsylvania’s 16, pulling up that state’s average. Credit Winner dominated the $100,000 New York yearlings with four, while RC Royalty produced one. A variety of pacing stallions contributed to New York’s success, with perennial favorites American Ideal and Art Major, along with relative newcomers Rock N Roll Heaven and Roll With Joe, all posting $100,000 yearlings. Desired stallions, along with a strong underlining Sire Stakes program, continue to drive the top yearling sale prices. New York’s proven trotting sire Credit Winner was the leading sire overall with a $66,091 average over 22 individuals. Veteran stallion Art Major and newcomer Rock N Roll Heaven were also tops, ranking third and fifth respectively, among pacing stallion averages. The fact that three trotting sires and three pacing sires from New York were represented on the top 20 sires list of the sale is an outstanding showing and demonstrates that both gaits are well represented in New York’s stallion barns. CONCLUSION Although the Harrisburg sale did not repeat the same kind of growth in averages as last year and didn’t see the same modest increases as Lexington and other sales this year, it was a solid auction with numbers comparable to last year’s strong showing. New York yearlings performed well, with 12 selling for $100,000, and Credit Winner walked away as the leading sire by average. The sale demonstrated that New York yearlings remain a good investment for both breeders and buyers in this market, likely because the strong New York Sire Stakes program is both stable and dependable with top-dollar purses and exciting stallion offerings that attract top stables and owners. New York yearlings performed well above the average on days two, three and four, garnering averages that ranged from 17 to 25 percent above the average. This kind of solid return above and beyond other horses provides a strong incentive for breeders to continue participating in New York. Even more so than in Lexington, first-crop sire Roll With Joe and second-crop sire Rock N Roll Heaven helped create excitement for New York-bred yearlings and drew top prices. The offspring of these stallions garnered strong averages despite buyers of New York-breds remaining very committed to the state’s historically well producing and proven stallions. The Pennsylvania average was driven by the continued demand for Somebeachsomewhere offspring and that state’s other proven stallions like Cantab Hall and Donato Hanover. New Jersey yearlings continue a multi-year rebound and were able to surpass New York’s average this year with a much smaller offering of yearlings. At both Harrisburg and Lexington, New York’s success, was generated by proven sires who have stood in the state and produced results for a number of years, in addition to several exciting new additions. Their offspring are desired both as racing and breeding stock, so they have a strong upfront and residual value. Harrisburg Yearling Sale 45 Lexington Selected Yearling Sale Tuesday, Sept. 30 - Saturday, Oct. 4, 2014 Fasig-Tipton Sales Pavilion in Lexington, KY Sale Report by Harness Horse Breeders of New York State for Agriculture and New York State Horse Breeding Development Fund OVERVIEW Overall, the Lexington Selected Sale average sale price was up 6.9% over last year. The impressive numbers of the sale, especially the strong 21% increase on the opening night, marked the continuing recovery of the yearling market. A total of 647 yearlings were sold over five days for a gross of $28,520,000 and an average price of $44,080. The Lexington Selected Yearling Sale is the first of the two preeminent national yearling sales in the U.S. and its results are significant for New York breeders. This sale contained a large number of New York-breds this year at 140, making up 21.6% of the sale. New York-sired yearlings averaged $47,407, 7.5% above the overall average. Below is a more detailed analysis of the sale, beginning with day-by-day overviews. Traditionally, the most attractive yearlings, both in pedigree and conformation, are offered at the beginning of the sale. Following this information is more detailed comparative analysis of the sale results. New York-breds outpaced the overall average slightly, demonstrating their ability to stand out among the top yearlings in the sale. The first day of the sale offered 39 $100,000 yearlings; 11 of those were eligible in New York. The state was proportionally represented with 28% of the first night catalog and 28% of the $100,000 yearlings. After improvements last year, the sale continued an overall increase in average price. It rose sharply on the first and final days, producing a nearly 7% increase over the five days. New York-breds were stronger than the overall sale on three of the five days. However, on the final day, New York-breds were actually 72% higher than the sale average, which itself experienced a nearly 20% increase. These results on the final day show that buyers are finding higher value in the yearlings traditionally considered on the lower price scale of this select auction. New York-bred yearlings made up 21.6% of the total sale and 23.3% of the total gross. Pacing fillies made up the second strongest sector, followed by trotting fillies. The filly category of both gaits experienced significant increases over last year—the average for both increased by more than $10,000—making for a very strong distaff segment. This trend of increasing filly averages was also true among New York-breds, but was much more pronounced with trotters. Lexington Yearling Sale 47 New York-eligible trotting fillies increased from $31,182 last year to $49,310 this year. This division also had the second highest sale price and boasted four $100,000 yearlings — double last year’s number. This increase in average was accompanied by a decrease in the number of trotting fillies offered from 44 to 29. New York-bred yearlings delivered higher averages than the overall sale in three of the four divisions. New York trotting colts realized a 17% higher price than the division’s average in the sale, amounting to about $8,000 more per horse. New York pacing colts brought a 13% average higher than the overall sale and trotting fillies were 11.4% higher. Last year, trotting fillies had the weakest average among New York-breds, but they rebounded this year to have the second highest division average. These strong prices continued to demonstrate how desirable New York trotters remain, regardless of their gender. Lexington Yearling Sale 50 CONCLUSION While the middle market of last year’s sale was where major increases were seen, this year’s sale found the top and bottom receiving improved prices. While it is important for breeders that all segments of the market are met favorably by buyers, it is encouraging to see that the upper levels continue to generate high prices and that the lower level still provides value to breeders. New York bred yearlings performed well at the Lexington sale again this year, outpacing the overall average by more than $3,000. The sale continued to demonstrates that New York yearlings remain very desirable as proven sires were sought after. A strong sire stakes program and desirable stallions were necessary for yearlings to sell well. Additionally, this sale showed that buyers were seeking fillies, boosting their average prices above last year’s. This trend may be reflective of both the equality offered for both genders in the New York Sire Stakes racing program and the ability of New York stallions to produce good broodmares for the future and their ability to retain post-racing career value. The Lexington sale is a key indicator for the Harrisburg sale in early November, which is the largest forum for New York yearlings this year, with 230 New York-breds cataloged. Jim Gillies Photo Lexington Yearling Sale 51 Morrisville Fall Yearling Sale Sunday, Sept. 21, 2014 Morrisville, NY Sale Report by Harness Horse Breeders of New York State for Agriculture and New York State Horse Breeding Development Fund OVERVIEW Overall, the Morrisville Fall Yearling Sale was strong, with a 4.6% increase in average over last year and a 10% increase for New York-eligibles. This sale typically catalogs mostly New York-bred yearlings and that was the case again this year, with 113 of the 130 individuals sold eligible in the state. The catalog attracted buyers as there was plenty of bidding to boost the overall sale prices, including an $85,000 top bid for a trotting filly. This compares to a $59,000 top bid last year for a trotting colt. Below is a more detailed analysis of the sale and comparison to last year. SALE SUMMARY 2103 Number Sold 2014 Average Price Gross Number Sold Average Price Gross Notes All Yearlings 125 $10,246 $1,280,800 130 $10,715 $1,392,900 4.6% increase in average over 2013 NY Yearlings 115 $10,610 $1,220,100 113 $11,667 $1,306,700 10% increase in average over 2013 After trimming the catalog size down for 2013, the sale maintained a similar number of horses this year and was able to generate an improved average. While overall the sale average increased just under 5%, the New York-bred average increased by double that, a strong 10%. For breeders of New York horses, this equated to an extra $1,000 per yearling on average. New York-bred yearlings made up 87% of the total catalog and 94% of the total gross sales. The 17 non-NY-bred yearlings averaged just $4,835, demonstrating a much greater value for those yearlings nominated to the New York program. As the economy continues to recover, this sale offers an early look at what could be a buoyed market driven by continued demand for NY-bred yearlings and a tighter supply due to a slightly smaller crop. Trotting colts also had the most individuals selling for $10,000 or more, with 64% of those cataloged selling for at least five digits. The pacing yearlings represent a smaller class than in recent years. As usual, pacing colts had a higher average than pacing fillies, including a top price of $25,000. Among the top-priced trotters, five different stallions are represented, demonstrating that buyers are interested in the depth of the sire lines available in New York. However, RC Royalty, offering his fifth crop, had four of the top six yearlings. The top price at the 2012 sale was $45,000, in 2013 it was $59,000, and this year $85,000. The fact that buyers are willing to spend more for top individuals is encouraging for breeders selecting this venue and demonstrates a strong bidding population. Fellow established stallions Conway Hall and RC Royalty rounded out the top three. First-crop stallion Broad Bahn’s four yearlings were welcomed by buyers, who paid a $15,375 average to take them home. The Hambletonian champion and winner of more than $1.5 million had the fifth highest average at the sale. Rock N Roll Heaven, whose second crop was on the sales block, was the leading pacing sire by average. His $12,667 average was the sixth highest overall in the sale. Veteran pacers Art Major and American Ideal also had top 10 averages. CONCLUSION The Morrisville Sale is the first significant event each year to gauge how New York yearlings will sell before the larger select yearling sales in the fall. An average that continues to climb and an increase in the top price again this year certainly provided a positive sign. The trotting sector continues to be markedly stronger than the pacing sector in this sale, despite a proportionally smaller class of pacers. While one new stallion was able to come out of the gate strong with his first offering, established stallions in both the trotting and pacing ranks continue to claim the top prices and offer breeders marketable and reliable options. Morrisville Yearling Sale 54 Advertising & Promotion In 2014, the Agriculture and New York State Horse Breeding Development Fund developed an online ad campaign to promote New York bred horses and their successful endeavors on the racetracks. This ad campaign focused solely on NY bred horses. The ads provided New York Sire Stakes breeding information, yearling sales promotions and also included NY Bred horse’s racing accomplishments at the state, national and international level. 55 Advertising & Promotion Promotional items were also distributed to racetrack attendees on nights that New York Sire Stakes were held. Information about the Agriculture and New York State Horse Breeding Development Fund and the New York Sire Stakes breeding and racing program was also made available. 56 2014 New York Sire Stakes Leaderboards The New York Sire Stakes Series is the most competitive division with the most talented New Yorkbred 2 and 3-year old horses vying for enhanced purses at pari-mutuel tracks statewide. The Excelsior Series with “A” and “B” divisions are designed for late blooming 2 and 3-year old horses. This slightly less competitive series gives owners, drivers, and trainers the opportunity to race their developing horseswhile earning money. The State Fair races are incorporated into the NYSS with featured meets held at Tioga Downs, Vernon Downs and Goshen Historic Track. The County and Town Fair circuit has long been the “grassroots” start for future stars in harness racing. Owners, trainers and drivers all get their start on the fair circuit. This is also where owners can get close to and work with their animals. New York County Fair races have fulfilled their promise as a starting place for new owners as many progress on to racing at the pari-mutuel racetracks. 57 Top Earning NYSS 3-Year-Old Trotters NYSS -- In 2014, Art Major was the third national leading money winning sire of 2014 for all age pacers. In 2004, Art Major began his stallion career in New York State. He has consistently produced some of the best horses to race in the United States. His foals have produced earnings in excess of $77 million dollars. Art Major is the sire of JK She'salady who just became the first 2-year-old female pacer in harness racing history to be named Horse of the Year. JK She'salady was undefeated in 12 races in 2014. Rock N Roll Heaven who had his first NY-bred crop race this year saw them earn $1,706,000 for the year. While the pacing stallions have a tremendous depth of quality it is more than matched by the trotting sires. That depth of quality reached an international level when Tumble Dust, a NY-sired 4-year-old trotter sired by Crazed won the prestigious Criterium Continental at Vincennes. He was an easy winner of the Danish Trotting Derby over the 1-15/16 mile distance in a race record 2:00.1f and has taken a mark of 1:53.2f over the mile at Jägersro. Conway Hall In 2014 Conway Hall was New York’s leading trotting sire and he was ranked number four as the national leading sire by average earnings per foal for 2 year olds in 2014 and ranked number five for national leading money winning sires of all age trotters for the year. The following data reflects the success of the program by the increase in quality of New York bred horses and the stallions that stand in the state. The famous half-mile oval has hosted some of the greatest standardbreds including Messenger, after whom the great oak tree at the head of Historic Track’s stretch run is named. Goshen Historic Track is the oldest active trotting track in the world. It was the first half-mile track to host a sub two-minute mile (Greyhound’s 1:59 ¾ in 1937), the first track in New York State to have pari-mutuel betting and the first half-mile track to join the Grand Circuit in 1911. The Historic Track is certainly one reason why Goshen and the surrounding area are known as “The Cradle of the Trotter”. In 1979 the reins of responsibility passed to a new group, Goshen Historic Track, Inc., a non-profit organization dedicated to the preservation of Historic Track as a working facility for horsemen from all over the region as well as a cultural, convention, concert, and community center for the people of Goshen and the surrounding Orange County. In 1966, the National Park Service designated Historic Track as a Registered Historic Landmark. The Track was the first of only two sporting sites in America to be so designated. Churchill Downs received a similar distinction 22 years later in 1988. The Track looks to the future when its grandstand will be filled with not only racing fans but concert goers, craft exhibitors, and people from all over the area who just want to relax and enjoy the setting. Goshen Historic Track is unique. It stands alone as an entity that combines the best of the old with the prospects of the new, the glories of the past with the promise of the future, tradition with innovation. At Historic Track the future is more than just “now,” it is today and tomorrow. Goshen Historic Track | 44 Park Place • Goshen, NY • 10924 « 845-294-5333 81
