he class of 2009 has been described
as disconnected, lazy, stubborn and
uninspiring. Is it at all possible that
we could have grown to be admirable,
hard working, determined and hopeful?
With the right spin, we can define ourselves however we choose.
As freshmen there was nothing in
particular that made us stand out, except
the fact that most of our middle school
ties remained strong. Problems of disunity have plagued our class throughout the
past four years, but there has always been
something to unite us.
Freshman year we were united by the
fact that we did not have a class dance for
homecoming week. Sophomore year was
worse, but gave us an inkling of how we'd
be connected in the future. At that point in
time the thing that united us was our indifference toward each other.
Junior year our collective school spir-

it was almost nonexistent. Unofficial clubs
and cliques still ruled our halls, but people
were growing tired of their limited social
experience. We may not have admitted it,
but we longed for the friendliness classes
ahead of and behind us had forged in high
school. We wanted desperately to like
each other, but were too apathetic to do
anything about it.
This year we made a 180 degree turn
and won the homecoming dance competition. We had hit rock bottom the year
before and we were ready to accept both
each other and good ol' fashioned school
spirit.
We became leaders of retreats, leaders of athletics, selfless in our commitment to others, committed to making a
statement, determined not to be defined by
others. We were proud of our accomplishments, we were savers of babies and we
were filled to the brim with school spirit.
Whoever says that we are disconnected is
obviously mistaken as we have come so
far as a class.
We are some of the finest procrastinators ever to pass through Marist. Does
this mean we're lazy? Perhaps, but there is
also the possibility that we just enjoy life
and our time in high school. We are definitely not lazy the night before one of Mr.
Ferrari's or Mr. Oldham's projects are due.
Our work ethic is at it's finest when the
pressure is on.
Just look at some of the academic accomplishments we have made. Salutatorian Anna Guzikowski said, "I think that
we've done well. I've seen people who try
hard in their classes be successful. " We
may not get our work done early, but we
certainly aren't lazy when it comes to getting it done.
We are proud to be members of our senior class. Our determination and the "we
seniors: profiled!

and memories on the senior profile pages.
– page 2 through 10
aren't gonna take it" attitude has proved we
can come together to do something good. I
am confident we will be remembered. As
for what we will be remembered for, it's
yet to be determined.
We may be remembered as the class
whose trivia bowl team was repeatedly and
painfully crushed by the class of '08 but
never had a chance to redeem ourselves,
or the class whose senior prank made Mrs.
Ferrari feel "bummed out," but we hope
for something better. We hope we're remembered by the people we leave behind
as caring students, athletes, and friends.
Our class shouldn't be defined as a
whole. We are full of individuals who
have accomplished many different things.
Our individual accomplishments outshine
what we have done as a class. When we
are gone remember not who our class was,
but remember the relationships you established with each of us.
Any Last Words?

burning inquiries for the last time.

O
n behalf of the Class of 2009, a rap to you all to express our feelings
on the year. I may be no Tech Nine, but I sure do like to rhyme.
To the Class of 2009,
These past four years have been filled with cheers, even though we were losing Homecoming
competitions year after year. Those that went before us said we were doomed to fail, all I need
say is “glow-sticks” and we know we prevailed. The activities we engaged in whether sports or
retreats, were fun whether winning or being beat. But above all and most important we know,
that being leaders was the most important show. So right now I rhyme that we are done, but to
you the class of 2009 forever WE ARE ONE!
To the Class of 2010,
We know you quite well. We are friends with you all, despite you defeating us at the overall
Homecoming competition in the fall. But that’s alright and that’s okay because we won the
class dance with glow-sticks one day. But on a more serious note we’ll miss you next year,
take over as leaders and of Mr. Ragan stay clear. Just kidding, we know he helped us a ton,
even though we didn’t deserve it because we would run. Get involved and do everything, have
no regrets, and of how much we care for you never forget.
To the Class of 2011,
Sophomore year is a tough one it's true, we wished we had handled it with as
much grace as you. Your class shows great spirit, your future is bright, just
remember to stay true to yourselves through the fight. High school is half over
and these next years will fly, take it in and enjoy it, or at least try.
To the class of 2012,
You’re the coolest freshmen we’ve ever met; working with you is a privilege we
will not soon forget. Stay close and continue to get to know each other, at the end
of four years you’ll all feel like brothers (and sisters).
To the teachers and staff,
You who inspired us to be our best, we say thank you for being better than
the rest. You taught us to calculate, write, and be actors; from your teaching
talents we will continue to be benefactors. You gave us smiles and hugs for
encouragement along the way, but ultimately you knew there’d come a day, we
would graduate and be on our way.
So on behalf of the Class of 2009 I say thank you, you were all just
divine.
Peace out to Marist,
Emelia Gubrud

“Get Out” -Mr. Huck
Tahne will be studying health and science and playing
soccer at the University of Oregon. She hopes to become
a personal trainer working for Chase Crawford and
living in a house that smells of rich mahogany with many
leather bound books. Tahne’s favorite memory of Marist
is eating two hamburgers at the Founder’s Day Mass
picnic. She will miss Mr. Oldham aka baldy because he
is the teacher I can joke with or get mad at and he won't
give me a referral -I guess I'll miss Ferrari too.

Alexis will be studying medicine at the College
of the Holy Cross in Massachusetts. Alexis says she
will still be in her medical school residencies in ten
years and have a lot of debt piled up. Alexis will
miss Mrs. May because she’s so amazing and she
wishes she had taken a class from Mr. Moser.
Elman will be attending Lane Community College next
year and wants to take over his family business. He wants
to be raising a family in ten years, and to be famous for
being the world’s first trillionaire. Elman’s favorite high
school memory is when he met Kristen Lee. Taking a
phone call in class was the worst thing he ever did on
campus and he will miss Mrs. May because she’s so
helpful. He will never forget that hard work pays off and
wishes that he hadn’t had to transfer schools so much.
“The more y ou inve st, t he more y ou profit.”
Conor will be attending the Oregon Institute of
Technology next year. He hopes to have a high paying
job in either biology or engineering, and wants to be
famous for finding life on Mars. Conor will miss Mr.
Wagner the most because he is a really good and funny
teacher. He learned through his high school experience
that hard work pays off and he loved his laid back senior
year.
Stephen will be studying biology next year at the
University of Oregon. He hopes to become a professional
yodeler but will most likely be running a dental office or
driving a monster truck. He’s not sure what he will be
famous for but he will probably get hurt doing it. Stephen’s
favorite memory from Marist was Tech 1 because they did
absolutely nothing and he will miss Mr. Moser because he
put up with all of his shenanigans.

winning state in football his junior year and if he could
change one thing about his high school years it would be
to play more sports. He will miss Mr. Matt because he’s
the best and the coolest and Mrs. May because she’s so
nice. Marist taught him that Catholics have really long

wants to be famous for making the world a better place.
Camille will miss Momo the most because he’s the best

teach her that everything will work out no matter how bad
it seems.
After graduation, Matt is spending his summer working
at Camp Harlow then going to Oregon State to study
dentistry and he hopes to be a practicing dentist with a
family in ten years. Matt’s favorite memory is running
cross country for four years and he will miss Mr. Nuxoll
because he was a great teacher who had a memorable
class. And if he could change one thing about his high
school years it would be to have seniors still have free
fifth but that will not stop him from living the fourth.
"Cas h rule s everyt hing around me,

Nick will be attending LCC to take welding courses so
he can weld for his family business. He wants to be rich
but just doesn’t want to be famous for something stupid.
Nick favorite high school memories were his free period
senior year. He will miss Mrs. Schmidt because he had
so many classes with her. Nick wouldn’t change anything
about his high school years because it’s finished. One
thing he learned in high school was to not hold back and
do what feels right for you.
"Be t he change y ou wi s h t o s ee in t he
world." -Ghandi
Julia will be studying to be a pharmacist at Oregon State
University. She wants to travel and be famous for always
smiling and being happy. Julia will miss Mr. Ferrari
because he’s awesome. Her favorite memory was going
to prom this year with Brady. High school has taught her
that it’s important to express oneself and if she could
change one thing about her four years it would be to talk
to more people all four years.

everyone has something to teach you.

business next year. In ten years she plans to be in graduate
school and working and hopes to be famous for having
a great business. Yan’s favorite memories are band,

friendships can last forever.

Allison has been caught doing on campus was starting
a food fight freshman year. Her favorite memories were

Every day you wake up do your morning activities
and go to school. But are academics really your main
focus in life? Are there other things you do outside of
school that you enjoy doing, even if they’re not the main
stream sports that any school has a team for? Well over
the course of this year I have been writing a little section
on the online every week about kids who have hobbies
or activities they are in to outside of school.
These things aren’t always what people would
consider as important because no one ever woulda’ thunk
that the person in the article ever had this talent or skill,
which is why I’ve been doing the article all year. It’s
good that we celebrate and praise the amazing athletes
we have at this school. But not everyone is into these
kinds of things. So I believe that these students deserve
a little spotlight for things they do as well. It helps all
the community around actually become knowledgeable
of those we see in the hallways.
It’s not only those who get great grades in the class
and kill it on the playing fields that are prepping for
their future. It’s those out in music lessons, out on an
internship, the dance floor, in the art room, in the plays,
behind the scenes of the plays, in their home kitchens,
and so many other places perfecting a skill that they
feel as a way to have a career. But it doesn’t even have
to be a career thing either, it can be just something they
find as a great way to express themselves, which tends
to help mold one’s future in the sense of what they want
to do as a career.

Senior Jared Christian was a standout

Christian's time was hundredths off his lifetime PR.
First time track athlete junior Mitchel
Wilson placed second in the triple jump
along with 6th place in the long jump.
Senior Tahne Apo led a team of nine
competitors at the state meet knowing the
possibility of a team trophy. On the girls
side of the meet won the 2nd place team
trophy being the only team in the top four
not to have and individual winner.

Softball Team Looking To Repeat
The 2008 State Champs looks to defend their state title.
by Pat Bartels and Dani Gehrke
Marist Softball has established
themselves as one of the most dominant programs in the state. The reigning
state champions have taken the Sky-Em
league for the fourth season in a row, and
received a number one seed in state playoffs. As of now the team is ranked number one in state and 23rd in the nation.
With their stats and two D1 players the
team has drawn a lot of media attention
and national recognition but they seem
to be handling the situation very well.
When asked about their team’s success the girls seem to look to one another. As junior Sarah Jamieson put it, “We
push one another to do the extra grounders, take the extra cuts and push the limit.
We know that if we do the little things,
good things will happen.” The girls have
drawn very close together over the past
years of success. Their motto, “get 1%
better every day” shows the girls devoted
work ethic. It seems that with a 26-1 re-
cord, they might be close to excellence.
Coach Bob Hammitt says of his team,
“They are dedicated to doing the mundane tasks to the best of their ability far
past when the other teams have quit.”
In the second round of state just this
past Tuesday the team squeaked through
with a 3-2 win against Banks. Senior
Kayla Braud hit her 100th base hit which
keeps her rolling on her national hitting
streak. Braud speaks about the hitting
streak saying “I’m really proud of my
accomplishment, but the better achievement today was winning that game because of clutch performances by my
teammates.”
The team is in the quarterfinals of
the state tournament and will to play Friday in Newport at 4:30 P.M. The team
however is no stranger to the pressure. If
recent history has anything to teach us,
the girls will come out on top. As long as
they keep pushing each other to get 1%

best athlete of the season
Here's a bit of our thinking.
-Dani and Jeff
Well we are here again picking the player of the season.
Everyone knows that it is an honor to be chosen as
one of the players of the spring season by such veteran
writers. Let’s begin the true debate of the “The player of
the spring season.”
(D) My first pick would have to be starting 1st baseman
and cleanup hitter Lindsay Ferreira who is a junior team
leader for the #1 ranked Spartans. Last season Ferreira
hit the game winning hit in the state championship game
and looks to lead them to the title once more. While
working hard on the 23rd nationally ranked team she
obtains a 4.0 GPA. That’s all that needs to be said...
(J) That’s great but this is the single player of the fall
season we aren’t talking about the best team in the spring
season. The best PLAYER is Brady Kirkpatrick who is
the player of the year in the Sky-Em. He has led his team
to a league title and plans to go deep in the playoffs.
Kirkpatrick has been a varsity baseball player since he
was a freshman. He is being looked
at by OSU, Oregon and ASU.
Kirkpatrick throws about 92 mph.
The bottom line is that
Brady’s play has earned
him the player of
the season.
(D) Well Lindsey
plays are a large part in how our
team has been shaped so far this
season, rankings or not. If I
have to chose another my next
athlete would be lacrosse star
Katie Colasurdo. She has
15 assists and 55 goals for
the 2009 season. In college
she will play lacrosse at
Redlands. How about
that?
(J) The truth is that the one athlete that may be
overlooked the most is Jack Pennington. Pennington has
all ready committed to play at Oregon next year on their
golf team. He has won three tournaments this year and
is currently going in to state seeded number one. He on
average shoots around par and plays number one on the
State Championship defending golf team.
(D) Woah... I have one that tops them all and should be
crowned our athlete of the year. The starting short stop
who has signed to play at nationally ranked Alabama to
play softball, Kayla Braud. In their second round of state
Braud hit her 100th game with a consecutive base hit,
keeping her national streak alive. She has recently been
awarded with Sky-Em Co- player of the year and 1st
team All-league infield.
You just can't top that!
15
When was the last time a cop
pulled you over and why?
"On Tahne's signing day because
I was following Macky who was
speeding."
-junior tennis player
Nikki Demers
What's the worst injury you've
ever had and why?
"The dislocation of my shoulder
from football."
-junior lacrosse player
Garrin Black
What is your favorite part of the
season and why?
"Winning league and making
it to play-offs because it's the
furthest we have ever gotten and
being a senior while doing it was
awesome."
-senior lacrosse player
Jessie Copley
What is the best way to make
friends on your team?
"Be really open and involve
yourself."

letters to the editors
Seniors Erica Little, Jordan Schrader and Art Hickman respond to your queries...
Dear Editors,
Why don't we have air conditioning in the
AC?
- Clueless freshman
Dear Clueless,
AC stands for Activity Center. It says
that on the side of the building, but if
you can't read, well then this probably
wouldn't help.
-Jordan
Dear Editors,
Who will win the He-man Volleyball game
today?
- Joe Morocco
Dear Joe,
Who wins when guys wear spandex and
short shorts? No one.
-Erica
Dear Art,
If you were exposed to radioactive waste,
what bodily defect would you most likely
have?
-Dane
Dear Dane,
After playing over 40 hours of "Fallout
3" I am immune to both alpha and beta
rays. If exposed to gamma rays I would
most likely die, assuming I don't selfadminister Rad-X in time.
Dear Editors,
Would you rather be able to fly, breathe
under water or walk through walls?
- Superfan
Dear Superfan, (part I)
Flying is the obvious choice. Who would
pass up the chance to spread their wings
before they're 18? Walking through walls
is pointless and breathing underwater
would be gross. Think of all the bacteria.
-Erica
Dear Superfan, (part II)
With great power comes great responsibility, which is why I'd rather not have a
superpower. The lifestyle of a hero would
clash with my busy schedule of napping
and VH1 reruns.
-Art.
Dear Superfan, (part III)
I respectfully disagree with Art, and
disrespectfully disagree with Erica. Too
many variables with flying. Birds, bugs,
planes, weather patterns, the list goes
on. Also they would be just abilities, not
making someone a super hero; sorry
Art. Just because someone might be
able to walk through walls, doesn't mean
they can walk through the objects on the
other side of the wall. I wouldn't want to
walk through a wall straight into a filing
cabinet. Breathing underwater is the true
obvious choice, because it could end up
saving your life, and would be fun and
handy.
-Jordan
Dear Art,
Rate these people from 1 to 10 on who
you think is likely to be your next brideto-be: Erica Little, Dan Auerbach, and
Captain Planet.
-Dane
Dear Dane,
Captain Planet: 6-and-a-half
Dan Auerbach: 9.3
Erica Little: F-Art
Dear Jordan,
I've heard Ms. Cooper swear before, but
she always denies that she did. How do
you put up with that crazy woman?
-No one knows
Dear No one,
I have heard her slip, but to be honest I
curse back if not more than her. I actually
screamed obscenities in her photography
class today. But in actuality, I enjoyed
my time with Ms. Toni Cooper. And with
Erica too.
-Jordan
Dear Editors,
Where the hell is Pat?
-Unknown journalism moderator
Dear Editors,
How do you newspaper kids manage to
run around like madmen all the time and
stay alive?
-Katie
Dear Katie,
We make Erica do all the work.
-Art 'n Jordan
Dear Toni,
Three people you can never find when
you really need them: Carmen San Diego, Pat Bartels, and Osama Bin Laden.
-Art
Dear Editors,
Who will win the powderpuff football
game today?
- Marist bookie
Dear bookie,
Certainly not the spectators.
-Jordan 'n Art
Dear Editors,
Any last minute ruminations on the inner
group dynamics that existed in the editing room? Some of us are just dying to
know
-Yours truly.
Dear Ours,
Erica makes unnecessarily aggressive
remarks.
-Art
Art sucks.
-Erica
Jordan sucks.
