Summer 2003. - Professional Photographers of Iowa
A Word From The President Barb Grabill I can’t believe it! I made it! I have said this over and over, and it still hasn’t sunk in that I am President of the PP of Iowa! A big thank you to past board members who have helped, put up with or encouraged me for the past 9 years. I have followed Jon Read through the board positions and I will always be indebted to him for his strength and honesty. Once again Iowa was a shining star at HOA. Over and over at the HOA banquet, Iowa members were called up for awards, volunteer workers were always dependable and team players. I am humble and proud to be a part of this organization. Plans are already in the works for “Faith of the Heart 2004”! January 24-27 will find us at the Des Moines Airport Holiday Inn for Winter Seminar. The Senior Shoot-Out will be back (Come on…. can you beat the President? Get your team together!). Plus a new competition, The Iowa Marketing Awards! This will be a similar format as PPA, but on a state level. Categories will include: senior direct mail, children/family piece, wedding piece or a web site. Kalen Henderson and Dennis Fraize are putting the details together, so plan on a great competition………and cash prizes! Marketing is one of the most important parts of our business; it can make or break it. It’s time we took a progressive approach to the education of our members. I plan to do this by offering more business and marketing classes in ’04. Are you making any money? Does January-June find you at the bank every year borrowing money to get through? Come to the business classes and find out what you need to do to prosper all year long. You can also look forward to some great entertainment with a dinner theater murder mystery by the Southeast Iowa Players at the banquet. The Spring Convention will be March 20-24 at the Des Moines Marriott. This is a much bigger facility for our growing organization. The Savery is a beautiful historic hotel, but it is time to move on for the benefit of members and exhibitors. One day print judging, programs in the trade show, run/walk morning activities, an art safari, Gary and Pam Box, Robert Lino, Dave Junion, Mitche Graf, The Henderson Gang, chocolate at every meal, are just a few things to look forward to! The Southeast Iowa Players (my sister’s group) will join us again, along with plenty of laughter, fellowship and learning. The First Guy (hubby Steve) looks forward to being at both events in ’04 along with the rest of my family. I look forward to introducing them to my PP of I family. Be sure to put a big X through a couple of weekends this summer and spend some time with your family. You will not only be refreshed when you return, but you will also strengthen the relationships that really matter most. We have an open heart, open mind, open door policy at the Grabill’s, so please call if you want to talk. As ever, your friend Barb “God didn’t ask us to be successful, only faithful” Professional Photographers of Iowa Board of Directors 2003-2004 Front Row: Don Knop, Christy Brinkopf (Executive Secretary), Bob Hawkins (Treasurer), Barb Grabill (President), Bruce Belling (Vice-President), Michelle Schueder. Second Row: Jon Read (Past-President), Wes Siebe (Secretary), Kathy Fiddelke (Artist Rep), Doug Pierson, Toni Johnson-Harryman Back Row: John Mohr, Dennis Fraise 1 Art Director’s Message Kathy Fiddelke We had a good showing at Heart of America with Iowa representation in both attendance and print entries. There is talk that the next Heart of America in 2005 will possibly be having an electronic art judging. It will not be an affiliated judging, but would be good to see the judging return. Is there any interest in doing something of that kind at our Iowa Convention? If you are interested, please contact one of the P.P.I. officers or myself. I am willing to work to establish a judging if there are enough members who would be interested in submitting prints. All the planning takes time, so please voice your opinion and hopefully join us in an electronic competition of some kind. A competition is a great way to show what you are doing and also see other’s creativity. Kathy Executive Officers President Barb Grabill M. Photog., Cr., PPA Certified 1005 N. Second Row: Wes Siebe (Treasurer), Kathy Fiddelke (Artist Rep), Bruce Belling (Secretary), Rick Krebsbach. Back Row: John Mohr, Dennis Fraise, Tony Johnson-Harryman. 3 New Board Members Doug and Rita Pierson from Cherokee both became new office holders in the PP of Iowa this year. Doug was elected to the PP of Iowa Board of directors, and Rita to the Iowa CPP board. We welcome them to our administrative team, and wish them well as they work to help PP of Iowa become even better! Doug Pierson I grew up on a farm in southwest Iowa and graduated from Red Oak High School. After graduation, I ended up at Hawkeye Tech, graduating in 1975 with a commercial degree. My first job out of Hawkeye was for Don Peterson Photos and Imperial Color Lab in Fort Dodge. At the color lab, I learned to do most everything, from processing film to printing custom color prints. My main job was doing the package printing. After about 2 years, they finally let me shoot a wedding. What a scary situation that was. I was there for 15 years. The last 6 or so I was the lab manager. In 1990, I purchased Berks Photography in Cherokee from Mike & June Berkheimer, and about 2 years later changed the name to Pierson Photography (a lot of thought went into naming it that). In the intervening years, we have grown the business to the point that I had to marry to get another photographer. In 2000 (don’t ask me the exact date) I married Rita, and moved her and her 2 wonderful daughters in with us. We now have 5 children. Rebekah is a freshman at the University of Iowa, Sara is a freshman at Cherokee High, twins Andrew and Daniel in 8th grade and Claire in 5th grade. I am honored to be serving on the board. I have been told my first duty will be the hospitality room. So look to a great party in January. Rita Pierson I grew up on a farm in Northwest Iowa and graduated from Paullina High School. After leaving home, I went to UNI, where I received my BA in Art. But, even though I earned a degree, most of my education for this profession came from attending seminars, conventions, MAIPP, and work experience. I started this whole career path by getting my first job at American Color when it was located in Waterloo...(I won’t say how far back this goes). This is where I got my Basic Training and Skill Development in print retouching. I worked there for one year before leaving to live in Australia for two years. When I returned to the States, I worked for another 3 or 4 years at the lab. Then, I moved to Cedar Rapids to work for Jon Read as the artist in his studio. I had enough experience by that time to know what seasonal pressure was and how to (more or less) deal with the stresses of volume production. I worked there for 8 years as artist, color-reader, printer, sometimes a shooter, and just whatever else needed to be done. It was while working for Jon that I was introduced to seminar education and the world of Competition! I then started my own studio and moved to Cherokee to marry Doug, after a long 4-year long distance relationship. Together, we have five kids...just like he said! Doug and I work together in the studio. I have retired much of the restoration and printing that I used to do. Now I just mainly do photography, marketing, neg. retouching, pay the bills, try to get things organized, make Doug spend money on the building and remodeling projects, then over-see them, do lots of laundry, and try to decide what’s for supper...(frozen pizza has been taken to a whole new level). Besides keeping busy with all the usual stuff, I also serve on two local boards; that of the Cherokee PCRA Rodeo, and the Cherokee ECLC (Early Childhood Learning Center). And it looks like I am also “sort of on the PPI Board”, so I guess I’ll see you at Hospitality! 4 Michelle Schueder started her photography interest in high school, where she was on the yearbook and newspaper staff. She worked at Jons Gallery in high school and decided to attend Hawkeye Community College in Waterloo after she graduated in 1992. Michelle graduated with high honors and 1 of Top 5 student photographers in the state. After graduating from Hawkeye she went back to work at Jons Gallery in Primghar until she purchased the business in April 1995. She has been a member of PP of Iowa since 1993 and received her PPA Certified in 1996. Michelle has won several awards including Top Ten Photographer for 4 years, a Kodak Gallery Award, Fuji Masterpiece Award, and PPA Certified award for highest total print scores, and has had a print in the general exhibit book. She was president of the Northwest Iowa Photographers in 1999. Michelle will be getting married on September 13, 2003 to Jason Wilbur in Primghar. She enjoys spending time with her friends and family when she is not working. Michelle is Treasurer of the Primghar Jaycees, on the board for the Housing Development, and helps with the community playhouse to list a few things that she is very involved with in the community. 2003 Iowa Non-Masters Men Indoors 1. Jon says his brother is a great subject to photograph because “he has a lot of character in his face, and likes to be photographed because he gets free pictures”! The portrait was made using natural light in the window of an abandoned warehouse that has since been torn down. Jon used a Hasselblad camera and Kodak T400CN film to record the image. The film was scanned and perspective corrected in PhotoShop. The final print was produced using Epson’s Gemini Printer. 9 Easy to learn. Easy to use. They have worked together their entire careers, and wherever Bob is, you can bet Sari is there too. Bob’s biography can be found with the article about his new Board position. Sari doesn’t have nearly as many medals and ribbons as Bob, but you can be assured that she has had a lot to do with Bob’s success, and I wouldn’t be too surprised if her “to-do” list is actually longer than his! Sari holds the Iowa Fellow Of Photography degree for her many years of service, and is near earning her second ruby. Bob and Sari have been involved with Heart of America for many years, especially on the Print Exhibition Committee, and are well deserving of their National Service Award. 10 Gary Sterling Gary has worked tirelessly for HOA and the PP of Iowa for many years. He has worked on about every committee there is, and served on the Iowa Board, becoming President in 1998. Gary has served as CPP commissioner and co-chair and also as interim Executive Secretary for the PPI in 2001. His business skills have been a great asset to our association over the years, and has been instrumental in putting the PP of Iowa on a solid foundation from which to operate. Gary has been very active in print competition with many awards, including Iowa Photographer of the Year in 1986 and the Medlar Award in 1994. He received his PPA Masters in 1986 and His Craftsman in 1988. At HOA, Gary was chairman or co-chairman of the Swap Shop for five years, and served on the Print Crew twice. He has helped in many other ways behind the scenes that many people are not aware of. PPA Awards & Degree Ceremony The presentation of PPA Degrees is the culmination of years of hard work and recognizes outstanding professional achievement. Degrees will be presented at PPA’s award presentation this summer at the annual convention, Imaging USA, on Tuesday night (July 29). The Award & Degrees Ceremony will take place just prior to the Awards Celebration party. The program will include: • Introduction of the PPA Board & elected officers • Presentation of PPA Awards including: The Ros Sandaal International Award, The Gerhard Bakker Award, The Harold Bovee PPA Juror Meritorious Service Award, PPA Director’s Awards, The Lifetime Achievement Award to Jay Maisel. At the conclusion of the award ceremonies the Degree recipients will be “presented” and cheered at the Awards Celebration party. When comparing this year’s presentation to past years it will be very similar. The biggest difference will be that it doesn’t take a $50 banquet ticket to attend. Degree recipients are encouraged to invite all family & friends to the Awards Ceremony. It is open to all and everyone is welcome to attend free of charge. The Celebration party which follows is for Imaging USA registered attendees. Individuals who are not registered for Imaging USA may purchase a separate ticket to the party for a modest charge. Earning a PPA Degree is an outstanding achievement. Every effort is being made to ensure that the Degrees and other PPA awards will be presented in a manner to honor the achievements of these distinguished individuals. 14 Detailed information for 2003 Degree recipients is being sent directly to them. We rented 3 houses close to the beach and spent a great week. Angela Wagner was again in charge of cooking us some fabulous meals. It was a great week of fellowship and fun together as well as a real learning experience. Our featured speaker was Tina Marie Crnic from Nebraska. Tina talked about her children and family photography, and demonstrated her techniques photographing her baby girl and husband as well as a 3-year-old model and Christy’s daughter. We also had several little informal learning times working on things such as PhotoShop and digital photography with hints from each other. There was a lot of shooting time this year with images shot on the beach, in beautiful Savannah, and the surrounding area. There will be another major trip planned for 2 years from now and the CPP board is currently seeking input on where the membership would like to go. It takes a lot of pre-planning to pull off a trip like this and we need to start investigating areas of interest and checking on prices, accommodations, speakers, etc. Generally money from the CPP treasury covers the speaker and the participants cover all other costs. In the past we have been able to keep the cost to participants down to $250-300 each which is a great bargain for such a trip. If you have ideas for places of interest or a reasonably priced speaker of interest please contact your CPP board members. 16 17 Iowa National Service Award Rick Krebsbach became interested in photography in 1969 when he had his Senior photos taken by Tike Strathman in Pocahontas, Iowa. After graduating from high school in 1970 he entered Hawkeye Tech Community College in Waterloo completing his 2 year degree in photography. His future wife, Kathy, was in the fashion and retailing program there. They were wed in July 1972. Rick was then drafted into the Army and spent 3 months in North Carolina, before being discharged due to a knee injury. Rick then returned to Pocahontas to work for Tike Strathman photographing Weddings, Seniors, and Children. He also worked parttime at a local filling station. The Krebsbachs then moved to Spencer in 1976 to work for Marvin Burk Photography. Rick was then able to attend PP of Iowa seminars and conventions, where he met his best friends, Bob Hawkins, Jon Read and Alan Adams. They have shared many great experiences together. When Marvin decided to retire in 1983, Rick and Kathy started the process of purchasing the studio. It was at this time that Kathy started to work in the studio on a part time basis. Rick was elected to the PP of Iowa Board, and made his way up through the chairs to become President in 1996. He then served one additional year under Jon Read. Rick has been active in several Print Competitions, being included in the Top10 photographers, and also receiving the Medlar Award. He has also worked on many committees and served as a Print Judge. Rick and Kathy have worked together for 20 years now at the studio. They have 3 sons: Jayson, 29, living in Minneapolis as a graphic designer; Todd, 25, living in Phoenix, Arizona working in retail, and Mitch, 21, living in Cheyenne, Wyoming and serving in the US Air Force security division. Rick has been involved in several community organizations and loves to hunt, fish, camp, and canoe with his friends. Rick is a very easy going, patient person who loves his job as a photographer.
