July 2015 - Coronado Baptist Church
CORONADO BAPTIST CHURCH THE COMMUNICATOR From Our Senior Pastor It is with a sense of sadness and yet great joy that the elders of Coronado Baptist Church accept the resignation of Pastor Murray Van Gundy. It is with sadness, because over these last seven (7.5) years we have been blessed tremendously with Murray’s commitment to our youth and passion for helping our students to grow in their faith through discipleship and ministry. We will miss his fun loving spirit and deep commitment to Jesus Christ and the gospel. However, we share the joy that Murray has for the new phase of his ministry that God is calling him to as he starts a New Church. We recognize that God has led Murray in this endeavor, and we know that having a direct call from God to this effort is critical to its success. We love Murray and Katie, Ella Grace and Quinn, and while we will miss their presence, we will continue to love and support them. The Elders of CBC have chosen to support them in a practical way in this New Church effort. For a decade CBC has given 3% each year VO L U M E 2 1 , I S S U E 7 ✤ Mormon Memories ✤ Family ✤ From Murray & Katie ✤ Playground ✤ Come & Join Us! ✤ Acceptance to church starts in El Paso, and for the foreseeable future we will be directing these resources to Murray’s New Church effort. If you are interested in finding out more about this New Church, please feel free to speak directly to Pastor Murray at 867–5842. Pastor Murray will continue in his current role until July 31, 2015. The Elders of Coronado Baptist Church are excited to present Drew Cook as Murray’s replacement beginning July 15, 2015. Drew will be assisted by Elias Pratt who will be replacing Steven Lewis who is resigning his position as Coordinator of Jr. High Ministries because Steven is joining Murray to help in the New Church start. A meeting for parents, teens, college students, and all other concerned members to interact with Drew and Elias will be held at 12:30 p.m. on Sunday, July 5 in the worship center. Please keep Murray and Katie in your prayers along with Drew and Vero Cook and Elias and Megan Pratt during this transition. This Pageant takes place in a small town 2 hours south of Salt Lake City in a town called Manti, Utah. We made hundreds of pancakes and shared Christ with many people as we camped among 1000 Mormons in a Mormon campground next to the Mormon Temple. Mormons are feeling persecuted by Christians so we made them breakfast two mornings in the campground to share the love of God with them. Many were surprised that Christians would be serving Mormons. Lots of conversation ensued over the free breakfast and lots of seeds were planted. We also shared Christ at a food court near the pageant, which was attended by about 7–10,000 Mormon’s each night. Lots of conversations regarding their faith, beliefs and the difference between Christianity and Mormonism took place in the food court. It was an outreach to the lost and we saw the Holy Spirit at work. Please pray with us that the seeds planted by the Holy Spirit through us will grow to full maturity. Dan Dodge 329-0212 or [email protected] Discipleship-Congregational Care 3 As we know, our common enemy, the devil, is constantly on the attack. Peter writes, "Your adversary, the devil, prowls about like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour." If we are not watchful and faithful, then that "someone" the devil is wanting to consume could be you or me! Marriages and families are being decimated by the enemy. Our marriages are symbolic of Christ's relationship to us, His church (Eph. 5). So if we allow Satan to defeat us at home, then this will have a massive negative effect on the body of Christ as a whole, because the church is comprised of families! As the family goes, so goes the church. Therefore we must strive to maintain healthy family relationships within the body of Christ, so we can accomplish what God has called us to do, which is to make disciples. If our families are in chaos and we are at odds with our mates, how can we ever be the witness Jesus has called us to be in this fallen world? The answer is obvious...we can't be. So, what do we do? Well, we pray...we pray for God's strength to be faithful in an unfaithful world. And then we act. We put feet to our prayers. This August we will be offering, for a limited number of married couples of CBC, a marriage enrichment seminar called " The Marriage Course," developed by Alpha ministries International. I along with Susanna and some others who are committed to healthy marriages will be leading this eight-week long course intended to strengthen our love for our husbands and wives. We ask you to pray for this ministry and how you might be involved. The exact dates and details will be coming soon! Because of His grace, Pastor Sam Sam Thomas 584-3912 or [email protected] 4 Student Ministry Dear CBC Family, The Lord, Coronado Baptist Church, and Pastor Mike have been very good to Katie, to my children, Ella and Quinn, and to me. We were called to CBC in the fall of 2007. I distinctly remember a question I was asked during our interview, “What is your life verse?” I answered with 2 Timothy 2:2 – “What you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses entrust to faithful men who will teach others also.” God has birthed in me a passion to invest in making generational disciple makers as spelled out in 2 Timothy 2:2. During my time as the Pastor of the Student Ministry this verse has come to fruition. I have been blessed to be a part of leading people to Christ, discipling them, and equipping them to do ministry that has impacted the world and the kingdom of God. This brings me to the point of this announcement. Today is a very difficult day but also a very joyous one, and one we believe God has ordained. Katie and I have been called to travel down a new path, a path that leads us away from CBC, but towards continuing the calling of expanding the kingdom of God through sharing Christ with the lost, making disciples, and equipping others to do ministry that will impact El Paso and the world. We have been called to start a new church here in El Paso. The calling to start a new church has been brewing for many years and especially in the more recent months. I want to make it very clear that no one asked us to leave. There is no sin issue or problem that led to this decision. God has called us to start a new church, and He has been equipping us to do so over our last thirteen years in ministry. Our starting a new church is simply a natural byproduct of a healthy Coronado Baptist Church. We love El Paso and believe this is a move to multiply the investment from CBC on a greater scale to reach the city with the gospel of Jesus Christ. We love the people of Coronado Baptist and especially the students and families who have been a part of our Student Ministry. You are our family. We will deeply miss you. The Lord has blessed us beyond measure through this church. This has been our home for many years as members and for the past seven and half years as the Student Pastor. Katie and I were baptized together by Pastor Mike in 2003, and I was ordained as a pastor by this church in 2005. Along with CBC being such a big part of our family has been my relationship with Pastor Mike. Mike has invested in me personally for the entire thirteen years I have been in ministry. Words will never be able to do justice what that has meant to me. Mike is my Pastor, he is my spiritual father, and most importantly he is my friend. He has loved me with a father’s love and he has loved my children with a grandfather’s love. I and we Murray Van Gundy (915) 867–5842 will forever be indebted to him. I am officially resigning as the Student Pastor as of July 31, 2015. We love you and we covet your prayers during this next season of our lives. Many blessings, Murray and Katie Van Gundy College-Age Ministry (CAM) [email protected] Sr. High Ministry [email protected] Jr. High Ministry, Steven Lewis (915) 449–4794 [email protected] Children’s Ministries 5 Go Outside and Play! Remember "Mom's Medicine" for boredom and bad behavior? "Go outside and play!" Neuroscience of Nature is an exciting field of research that validates that Dr. Mom was right! Playing in a park or on an outdoor playground is especially therapeutic in this modern age, as many children sit indoors in front of a screen. Research confirms that children are feeling the effect— weakened immune systems, mood problems and childhood obesity. The children who participate in CBC's programs are not sitting in front of a screen or simply being entertained. However, the 1 ½ hour adult programs (Bible studies, worship services, etc.) during which the children meet for Sunday School and Children’s Church, make it difficult to hold the attention of children confined in small classrooms. Other programs, such as AWANA, VBS, etc., would also benefit from the availability of an outdoor play area. Dr. Bill Sears, M.D., who is the author of 42 books on family health, including The Healthiest Kid in the Neighborhood, says, "Science agrees. In a revealing study, boys labeled ADD were divided into two groups: One got an extra 20 minutes per day of "prescribed" vigorous exercise; the others did not. Compared with the sedentary group, the active group showed remarkable improvement in their ADD, especially in their ability to sit still and focus when necessary. His desire for a healthy children's program includes the catchphrase "No child left [on their] behind!" Now An extended fence to keep various animals out and kids in A cushioned playground surface to replace the sand A canopy for shade Updated playground equipment. As a body of Christ we need to provide the best environment possible for teaching and nurturing our children. How can you help? Prayer (James 5:16); Time; Money; Materials. Jackie Miller Women’s Ministry Coordinator 526-7395 or 584-2912 Celebrate Recovery Do you suffer from fear of rejection? This character defect can manifest itself in susceptibility to manipulation, need for control, anger, resentment, people pleasing or depression, all of which are sins categorized as co-dependency, that result in unhealthy relationships and/or lifestyle. Actually, this was me before learning who I am in Christ and Celebrate Recovery. Since then it has become my heart’s desire to please God alone as I claim, “Seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.” Matthew 6:33. Through the years, I’ve learned valuable lessons and principles through CR which help me focus on obedience to the Lord as He increases and I decrease. In CR, we first learn to identify our issues, come to terms with the fact that we, alone, are powerless to change, that Jesus is our hope because He loves and cares for us unconditionally and it is HE that has the power to help us recover. We learn to accept God’s grace for all of our sins so that we can make Him the Lord of our lives and learn to trust Him through our recovery. Fortunately, we don’t travel this road alone as we see this modeled by others in CR who have traveled down the road longer than we have, which provides evidence we will see results if we just put our faith into action one step at a time. The Serenity Prayer we recite each Thursday night reminds us what we do and don’t have control over. The first paragraph says, “ God, grant me the Serenity to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things I can and the wisdom to know the difference.” I’m a work in progress, how about you? Just wanted to say thank you for your donation to Team Hope on behalf of my sweet father, Jim. I know he loved each and every one of you.
