Koyan (Introduction) 小屋 Treasures of the Forest Date – 2016.01.20 Page – 001/004 Forest City Treehouse: Bring a piece of the city to the forest Koyan: Bring a piece of the forest to the city — A piece of nature This project considers the forest a resource, not just by providing building material but in our everyday life. To walk into a forest is to walk inwards and to connect to nature. This koya in an urban context, takes a small piece of the forest and brings with it the scent, sound and the paus that nature provides. Like a small treasure the koya is a spacefiller, built high up between urban structures. The heigth of the structure, ensures privacy and the visitor has to use folding stairs to enter the hut. When the stairs are accessible the koya is free to use. — A modular infill unit for privacy The cabin, which can be executed in a various sizes, is large enough for 1-2 people. The floor plan, designed to feel as natural as the forest, offers a wooden bench and through a small opening you can glance at the city beneath you. Its appearance, scent and feel, contrast the urban rhythm and pace. The koya serves as a direct link to nature and the visitor is invited to feel, smell and even hear the forest through a discrete sound system. Except from pine wood, details around the openings and in the wooden benches are made from juniper wood, a material often used for its distinctive natural scent. 小屋 — Material and experience When built in Sweden, we propose the local material pine. This is an efficient building material, and the resin-rich wood provides a strong scent of the forest which further enhances the experience of being in the koya. The appearance of the pine tree will differ over time with the wood’s natural aging. In contrast to the urban fabric, which with its wide use of concrete and glass, will appear the same, the koya will age and proudly show its history. To further emphasize the connection to the forest, the koya plays sounds from the forest. Sounds of cracking branches in the distance and solemn winds through the tree tops create a safe haven in the middle of the dense city center. — Irregularity When building the koyas, all wood produced - even the scrap pieces will be used. The different pieces are connected where best suited and in this way create an organic pattern for the koyas facades.
