inot Noir is a uniquely challenging grape with
an unrivalled ability to reflect the character of
the site where it grows. Winemakers all over
the world have set out in search of the Holy Grail: to
repeat Burgundy’s success with Pinot Noir.
Benjamin Lewin, author of the bestselling books,
What Price Bordeaux and Wine Myths and Reality,
travels from Burgundy through the other cool climates
of Europe where Pinot Noir is grown, to the West
Coast of North America, and to Australia and
New Zealand in search of the
true Pinot Noir.
In Search of Pinot Noir investigates the changing
character of Burgundy, asks what happens to
Pinot Noir outside of Burgundy, and examines
how the wines of each region age. How far are
styles of Pinot Noir inside and outside of Burgundy
due to terroir and how far are they influenced by winemaking? Extensive tasting notes address
these issues and complement discussion of the regions where Pinot Noir is grown.
Is Pinot Noir uniquely successful in Burgundy or have other regions in Europe or the
New World succeeded in their challenge? Can Pinot Noir really achieve its full complexity
only on limestone soils, or does it produce equally interesting expressions in other terroirs?
Is there only one true path for Pinot Noir or have plantings in new places revealed alternative
truths for this fascinating grape? What is the ultimate Pinot Noir?

View from the Vineyard
A PRACTICAL GUIDE TO SUSTAINABLE
WINEGRAPE GROWING
Clifford P. Ohmart
uthor and entomologist Clifford P. Ohmart brings
reason and clarity to the politically loaded and
amorphously defined popular world of sustainable
viticulture with this unique and comprehensive examination
of the subject. View from the Vineyard does much more than
explain what “sustainable” means,
its practical importance to the wine
industry and the costs of agribusiness
as usual. It provides the farmer
with a realistic and achievable path to a sustainable vineyard
by describing:
• The challenges of practicing sustainable winegrowing
• Where does Integrated Pest Management fit in?
• How are organic and sustainable farming related?
• A holistic vision for the farm
• How to identify and define your farm’s resources
• Methods for developing sustainable goals
• Creating a plan to achieve your holistic vision
• Ecosystem management and sensitive species
• Understanding the vineyard as habitat
The book concludes with a self-assessment guide in which growers can easily track their progress through
these transitional periods.
Clifford P. Ohmart, Ph.D. is the author of the Lodi Winegrower’s Workbook
and co-editor and co-author of the Code of Sustainable Winegrowing Practices
Self-Assessment Workbook published in 2002 by the Wine Institute and
California Association of Winegrape Growers. He also writes a bi-monthly
column on sustainable winegrowing for Wines & Vines magazine, has
authored 34 peer-reviewed research papers in international science journals
and presented over 300 seminars, conference papers and symposia papers
at Universities, government research organizations, and grower groups
throughout the world.

NEW BOOKS
Sonoma Wine & the
Buena Vista Story
Charles L. Sullivan
he beginning of history for California wine starts with 17th century Jesuits and the
Mission Grape. But the industry, the commercial powerhouse that commands
60% of the US market, was birthed 200 years
later, the product of a Hungarian aristocrat,
European grapes and the Sonoma Valley.
In this groundbreaking new
book by historian and bestselling
author Charles L. Sullivan the
untold history of Sonoma wine
serves as backdrop to the
turbulent story of California’s
first commercial winery,
Buena Vista, from its founding
by brilliant but quixotic Agoston
Haraszthy, through phyloxera
plague and
the dry years of
prohibition to its presentday market prominence.
Sonoma Wine and the Buena Vista Story is a scholarly study
of two centuries of California wine history, told in a riveting
narrative that will engage and delight.

Wine in the
Bible
A BIBLICAL REFERENCE
TO ANCIENT GRAPE
GROWING AND
WINEMAKING
Jabier Marquinez
ne would be hard pressed to
find a person who came of
age in the west who hadn’t
heard of the New Testament account
of water being turned into wine.
After all, Jesus’ first miracle is one of
Western civilization’s formative symbols.
But what most don’t know is how
important wine and its production
was to ancient Israelites, and how its
inextricable place in their lives is
reflected in the Biblical narrative.
Jabier Marquinez gives readers
a unique insight into this historical
winemaking world with direct references from the Old and New Testament which relay
such intricate details as:
• Specific vineyard practices from grafting and pruning to watering and fertilizing.
• Ethical labor agreements with foreign vineyard workers.
• Vineyard pests and proper abatement techniques.
• Harvesting, blending and storage procedures.
• Ancient winery technology.
• The use of wine as medicine and dyes.
• Why a farmer with an active vineyard was entitled to a military service exemption.
Wine in the Bible is
a fascinating examination
of the daily working lives
and practices of Bible-era
winemakers and wine
drinkers.

Amarone
THE MAKING OF AN ITALIAN
WINE PHENOMENON
Kate Singleton
A
marone has an ancient history.
Appassimento, the delicate act of drying
grapes which is fundamental to the style,
has been in practice since Roman times, and
the wine is a proud part of Venetian culture.
But Amarone is also a modern creation. The
big, rich, red wine was first internationally
marketed in its current dry form in the midtwentieth century. What twenty-first century
wine lovers around the world know and cherish
as Amarone is a product of age-old technique,
modern science, and a few visionaries, primary
among them, Sandro Boscaini.
Acclaimed wine writer Kate Singleton tells
of Amarone’s rise to global distinction through
the recollections of Sandro Boscaini, founder
and president of Masi Agricola, from his earliest
memories of
sleeping a floor below newly harvest grapes drying on
racks in the attic to convincing the editors of Wine
Spectator to perform and publish the magazine’s first
Amarone tasting.
To fully appreciate Amarone one must know the
history of the Valpolicella and the Venetian Republic, a
legacy which Singleton conveys in a rousing narrative.
Also, Sandro Boscaini lovingly details the development of
his technique, the special nature of the terrain and his
connection to it, and the necessary elements that make
a world class Amarone.
Amarone is a passionate account of this unique wine, the place and people where
it is grown and made, and the pleasure in sharing it with the rest of the world.

Concepts in Wine Chemistry
Third Edition
Yair Margalit, Ph.D.
ore than 150 years after Louis Pasteur
attributed fermentation to a living organism,
the field of wine microbiology and
chemistry is vibrant with discovery. The last decade
alone has seen great strides in our understanding of
the biochemistry involved in vinification. In this
new edition of his classic text, Yair Margalit gives
the complete and current picture of the basic and
advanced science behind these processes, making the
updated Concepts in Wine Chemistry the broadest and
most meticulous book on the topic in print.
Organized to track the sequence of the winemaking
process, chapters cover must and wine composition,
fermentation, phenolic compounds, wine oxidation,
oak products, sulfur dioxide, cellar processes, and wine
defects. Margalit ends with chapters detailing the
regulations and legal requirements in the production
of wine, and the history of wine chemistry and
winemaking practices of old.
Yair Margalit, Ph.D., is the author of the best-selling Winery Technology and Operations
and Concepts in Wine Technology. He is founder and winemaker of renowned Margalit Winery
and teaches wine technology and chemistry at the Israeli Institute of Technology.

NEW BOOKS
Concepts in Wine Technology
Third Edition
Yair Margalit, Ph.D.
uccessor to Yair Margalit’s bestselling winemakers’ handbook Winery Technology and Operations,
this new edition of Concepts in Wine Technology is completely revised and updated to meet
the advances in modern winemaking.
He begins in the vineyard discussing proper maturation, soil and climate, bunch health,
vineyard disease states and grape varieties. Next he tackles the pre-harvest with a careful look at
vineyard management and preparing the winery for harvest. Dr. Margalit then outlines the entire
process of harvesting, from destemming, crushing and skin contact as it applies to both red and
white grapes to pressing, must correction and temperature control.
Fermentation is examined fully and includes a lengthy look at the factors affecting malo-lactic
fermentation and its pros and cons. There is a huge chapter on cellar operations that deals with
racking, stabilization, fining, filtration, blending and maintaining winery hardware, followed by
sections on barreling and bottling.
The final chapter pulls together the more general aspects of wine technology, covering
sulfur-dioxides, different forms of wine spoilage and ways to ward them off, legal regulations
and, one of the most important and enigmatic compounds in wine, phenolics.

“Subliminally, the label raises one’s expectations
of the wine: the uniqueness of the art anticipates
the uniqueness of the wine...a rhetoric of
display that enhances the value of what is
already regarded as inherently valuable. Indeed,
it is about the synergistic value-effect the
convergence of things of intrinsic value—art
and wine—can have.”
Robert Arneson
—Donald Kuspit, Wine And Art: The Grand Alliance
IMAGERY: Art for Wine
Hung Liu
Bob Nugent, foreword by Donald Kuspit
n 1985 wine-maker Joe Benziger and Sonoma artist Bob Nugent struck on the idea of putting
original art on special releases of Imagery Estate Wines. The goal was straight-forward: to commission
the world’s modern art luminaries to create works for reproduction onto wine labels. Two decades
and 160 labels later, they have assembled a staggering collection of contemporary art from the likes
of Sol Lewitt, Terry Winters, Nancy Graves, John Baldessari, Judy Pfaff and Bob Arneson.
This book highlights 133 works of art, the best of the Imagery collection. The images are big,
lush, and accompanied by biographical sketches of the artists’ careers, as well as short descriptions
of their individual ideas and methods. The pictorial index shows the works in their label form, from
1985 to the most recent vintages. These images are evocations of wine’s multi-faceted ability to
inspire us.
