Anxiety, excitability, nervousness or simply apprehension are the most common cause of travel sickness in dogs and cats rather than true motion sickness, which is relatively rare. This nervousness and anxiety especially affects young dogs and cats for whom travelling is a strange new experience. Make steps to desensitise the dog to the car by using the stationary vehicle for play, relaxation and even feeding there occasionally, providing it is safe to do so. Then try this with the engine running while the vehicle is stationary and finally introduce short journeys. This will enable your dog to accept the car as part of a normal environment, help build up confidence and is ideal if adopted from an early age. Follow the chart below to find out the best Dorwest product for your travel sickness Travel Sickness Anxious, salivating, shaking followed by vomiting No apparent anxiety but vomits during journey With travel sickness it is a good idea to consider these basic points: 4 Accustomise your pet to travel by starting with short journeys to build up confidence 4Don’t give a meal just before travelling 4Find what position your pet finds most comfortable when in the car 4Remember to stop for breaks on a long journey and NEVER LEAVE your pet in a vehicle on warm days with w pleased I am let you know ho ts to e ble Ta lik t nt jus me le ld I wou gestive Supp Di e th d not re ve de ha or kness. Scullcap & Valerian Tablets Organic Valerian Compound Digestive Supplement Tablets This licensed veterinary herbal medicine relieves anxiety, helps relaxation and reduces excessive salivation. Two doses should be given at about 12 hours and then again 2 hours before a journey, using the dosage rate of 2 tablets per 5kgs bodyweight for both doses. Use the same regime for subsequent car journeys so that a calm disposition becomes normal and the dog or cat becomes more accustomed to travelling. Not recommended for pregnant or lactating females. For unexpected trips where time does not allow two doses of tablets to be given, this liquid supplement containing three calming extracts can be used as an alternative to relax dogs and cats and so reduces anxiety. Cats love the aroma of Valerian Compound and so simply putting a few drops on the bedding will calm them during the journey, making it less stressful than having to administer this to them orally. Not recommended for pregnant or lactating females. Containing ginger, slippery elm, rhubarb and valerian these tablets are formulated to settle the stomach and are very comforting for those who are prone to motion sickness but are not showing signs of anxiety. Give the appropriate dose for the animal’s weight about two hours before a journey commences. Sometimes a dog who has true motion sickness such as this can become anxious as a result of the expectation that they might be sick on a journey. If this does occur it may be necessary to also use the recommendations for anxious travellers. If required any of these products can be used in conjunction with each other and with any other conventional medication that the animal may be receiving.
