Our Lady of Mercy Lay Carmelite Community of
February 24, 2013, 2nd Sunday of Lent
Our Lady of Mercy Lay Carmelite Community of Holy Spirit Parish is made up of 23 professed and
received members. Historically known as the Third Order of Carmelites, members respond to a
special call from God to live their lives according to the charism, traditions and spirit of the Carmelite
Order. Unlike a religious life, the Lay Carmelite is a vocation that shares the call to holiness and
mission of the Carmelite Order. The Community meets on the 3rd Sunday of each month and is
coordinated by Catherine Weeks.

The Transfiguration of Jesus
The common theme of today’s
readings is metamorphosis or transformation. The readings invite us to work
with the Holy Spirit to transform our
lives by renewing them during Lent, to
radiate the glory and grace of the transfigured Lord to all around us by our
Spirit-filled lives.
The first reading describes the
transformation of a pagan patriarch
into a believer in the one God, the
transformation of his name from
Abram to Abraham and the first covenant of God with Abraham’s family as a reward
for Abraham’s obedience
to God. In the second
reading St. Paul argues
that it is not observance
of the Mosaic Law and
circumcision that transforms people into Christians, and hence, the
Gentiles need not become Jews to become Christians.
In the transfiguration story in today’s gospel, Jesus is revealed as a
glorious figure, superior to Moses and
Elijah. The primary purpose of Jesus’
transfiguration was to allow Him to
consult his heavenly Father and ascertain His plan for His Son’s suffering,
death and resurrection. The secondary
aim was to make his chosen disciples
aware of his divine glory, so that they
might discard their worldly ambitions
and dreams of a conquering
political
Messiah and might be
strengthened in their
Fr. Mathew
time of trial. On the
mountain Jesus is identified by the
heavenly Voice as the Son of God.
Thus, the transfiguration narrative is a
Christophany, that is, a manifestation
or revelation of who Jesus really is.
The “transfiguration” in the Holy
Mass is the source of our strength: In
each Holy Mass, the bread and wine
we offer on the altar
become “transfigured”
or transformed into the
living body and blood
of the crucified, risen
and glorified Jesus.
Just as Jesus' transfiguration
strengthened
the apostles in their
time of trial, each holy
Mass should be our
source of heavenly strength against
temptations, and our renewal during
Lent.
Each time we receive one of the
sacraments, we are transformed: For
example, baptism transforms us into
sons and daughters of God and heirs of
heaven. Confirmation makes us temples of the Holy Spirit and warriors of
God. By the sacrament of reconciliation, God brings back the sinner to the
path of holiness.

ice Bowls: Lenten fasting
meets Charity ~ Please take
home one of the cardboard "rice
bowls" that are available in church.
Throughout the Lenten season, when
you practice prayer and self- discipline by abstaining
from meat on Fridays, or by fasting ... whether eating
less, eating simpler foods, or skipping a meal at some
point ... please offer what money is saved to those
who don’t have enough to eat. These small donations
put into the rice bowls add up to great help for those
who live with hunger every day. Please return the
filled rice bowl to church between March 17th and
24th (the last weeks of Lent). Thank you for your
kindness.

time today to help save a life. The Blood Drive
is in the Small Hall from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. No appointment is necessary. Healthy adults, 17 years old
or older weighing at least 110 lbs., are able to donate
with valid identification. (Blood donors may be 16
years old but must have parental consent.) Blood types
‘O’ and ‘B’ are often in short supply. However, the
rarest blood type is the one not on the shelf when
needed by a patient. It's about an hour of your time.

C
onvalidation of Marriage ~ The next Group
Marriage Convalidation is scheduled for Saturday, April 20th at 11:00 a.m. This event is for
couples who have a civil marriage (married outside
of a Catholic church), and this was the only marriage
for either one. If this applies to you, this is a good
opportunity to receive the Sacrament of Matrimony,
so that the church recognizes your marriage. Or perhaps you know someone else who would benefit
from this Sacrament. Please let them know. There
are no fees or stipends for the ceremony.
There is a one day preparation class on Saturday,
April 13th from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at Holy Spirit which couples must attend prior to the wedding
day. For more information or to schedule an appointment, call Sister Karla at 415-368-9080.

“I
had 2 abortions; one when I was 17 and the
other when I was 22. I lived with the pain and
depression caused by those mistakes for over 27
years. I spent most of that time trying to deny that I
had any lasting problems from those procedures.
During this time I suffered a major depression and
suicidal thoughts. I felt like I wasn’t worthy to be
anyone’s friend or even to be alive. It wasn’t until I
heard someone from Project Rachel tell her story.
My husband and I were in our car coming home and
I began crying along with the lady on the radio and I
knew right then that I needed to grieve and mourn
the death of my two children. I contacted Project Rachel and went to a retreat to heal. It was the most extraordinary experience I have ever experienced and I
now feel forgiven by both God and myself.”

old and Flu Season Reminders: Please remember that
you are not required to attend
Mass when you are sick. Additionally, to avoid spreading or getting
germs during the winter it is fine to
avoid holding hands or shaking
hands at Mass. Smiles, nods and
kind words can suffice for the exchange of peace. Also, if you have
any doubts about being sick, please
do not receive Communion from
the cup. Even when not receiving
the precious Blood of Christ, it is
good to show respect as you pass
by with a small bow. Thank you!
