he Boy Scouts of America has designated February 3 as "Scout SunT
day" to recognize the contributions of scouts. One of the parts of the
Scout Law is "A scout is Reverent". Reverent means "A scout is faithful in his
religious duties and respects others in matters of customs and religions". February 8, 1910 marks the start of the 103rd year of scouting in America. Troop

Bishop’s Appeal
Parish Staff
February is time for the annual Bishop’s Appeal in our parish and our Diocese. This yearly appeal assists our Diocese in
funding a variety of ministries, services, and programs that benefit many throughout the East Bay. It reaches out into our larger community to help those most in
need. Our goal for 2013 is $71,321.05. Please consider contributing.
Lenten Parish Mission
Mark your calendar to attend the 2013 Lenten Parish Mission
presentations. Fr. Franklin Fong, OFM, will present the
Mission talks on Monday, March 11th thru Wednesday,
March 13th at 8:45 a.m. and repeated at 7:30 p.m. each
day. He will preside at the 8:00 a.m. daily Mass. Additionally, he will give the homilies at all the weekend Masses on
March 9th and March 10th. The over-all theme is “How to
Transform Our Faith”. The talk on Monday is “Faith: What
is it? How do we nurture our faith?”.
Tuesday: Examples of the role of art in
our prayer life. Wednesday: Take a “leap of faith” to transform our life through
vision and actions … recognizing the work of the Holy Spirit. All are welcome to
attend. For more information call rectory: 797-1660 or Deacon Richard:
656-7384.

onvalidation of Marriage ~ The next Group
Marriage Convalidation is scheduled for Saturday, April 20th at 11:00 a.m. This event is for
couples who have a civil marriage (married outside
of a Catholic church), and this was the only marriage
for either one. If this applies to you, this is a good
opportunity to receive the Sacrament of Matrimony,
so that the church recognizes your marriage. Or perhaps you know someone else who would benefit
from this Sacrament. Please let them know. The
advantage of this group convalidation is that there
are no fees or stipends for the ceremony. There is a
one day preparation class on Saturday, April 13th
from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at Holy Spirit which
couples must attend prior to the wedding day. For
more information or to schedule an appointment, call
Sister Karla at 415-368-9080. (Deacon Richard can
answer basic questions at 510-656-7384.)

Lay Ministers of the Holy Spirit Parish. Take this

this new year of service with other parish ministers
in a half day of bonding, renewal, encouragement,
and prayer.
T
his Lent, 2013, Holy Spirit Parish invites you
to be part of a Small Christian Community as
a way of reviving your relationship with Christ and
the Church. A small Christian Community is a community of committed parishioners who gather at
designated homes to attentively listen to the Sunday
Scripture readings and through reflection discover
how it impacts their lives. Groups of 8 ~ 10 parishioners will gather weekly during Lent to journey as
they form Small Christian Communities at various
homes throughout the parish. For more information

Rice Bowls: Lenten fasting
meets Charity ~ Please take
home one of the cardboard "rice
bowls" that will be available in
church beginning February 9th. Throughout the Lenten season, when you practice prayer and self discipline by abstaining from meat on Fridays, or by fasting ... whether eating less, eating simpler foods, or
skipping a meal at some point ... please offer what
money is saved to those who never have enough to
eat. These small donations put into the rice bowls
add up to great help for those who live with hunger
every day. Please return the filled rice bowl to
church between March 17th and 24th (the last weeks
of Lent). Thank you for your kindness.
Pro Life Corner
Peace in society is also put at risk by certain threats to
religious liberty: it is a question sometimes of the
marginalization of religion in social life; sometimes
of intolerance or even of violence towards individuals, symbols of religious identity and religious institutions. It even happens that believers, and Christians
in particular, are prevented from contributing to the
common good by their educational and charitable

institutions. In order effectively to safeguard the exercise of religious liberty it is essential to respect the
right of conscientious objection. This “frontier” of
liberty touches upon principles of great importance …
rooted in the very dignity of the human person. They

Fat Sunday ~ February 10th
7:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. ~ Small Hall
The Festival Committee is serving warm Portuguese filhoz (fee-lawsh), meaty linguica sandwiches and delicious sweetbread for its Fat Sunday social. Holy Spirit’s “Fat Sunday”, usually
the Sunday before Lent, honors the Church’s old custom of Shrove Tuesday or “Fat Tuesday”,
the day before Ash Wednesday. Shrove Tuesday comes from the confessing or “shriving” of
sins in preparation for the Penitential season of Lent. The day is then given over to merrymaking
in using up all the “fat” in the house before the beginning of Lent.
