Updated: 10/07/14 2015 FAST FACTS CONTINUED ELANTRA GT AWARDS AND ACCOLADES: The Elantra GT was named to Strategic Vision’s list of the “Most Loved Vehicles in America” in the Small Multi-Function Car category; this report demonstrates how hard people can fall in love with the cars they drive. Kiplinger’s Personal Finance Magazine named the Elantra GT Best New Car Under $20,000, besting competitors such as the Dodge Dart and Nissan Sentra. The Elantra GT took top honors in the annual car of the year awards bestowed by the Inter-American Federation of Automotive Journalists (FIPA) when it was named the “2013 Car of the Americas” during the press preview days at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit. "In the Elantra GT, Hyundai combined function with style and adorned it with better driving dynamics than the coupe. For those reasons, we prefer the GT. If it doesn't look young enough, we'll wear a Tapout hat or take up kayaking." – Edmunds.com "Step inside the Hyundai Elantra GT and you're immediately transported into a different class of five-door hatch. The interior is bright, light and open, which is a stark contrast from nearly every other car in the segment. Like the normal Elantra, the GT's interior is well constructed with solid, responsive controls. Unlike the sedan, however, the GT's center console isn't overwrought with futuristic design." – Edmunds.com "The hatchback is the only Elantra body style allowed to wear GT badges, and from a visual point of view, it is indeed a distinction versus its lineup-mates… Another plus: The GT is commendably quiet at most speeds. There’s a little wind noise north of 80 mph but almost no rumble coming up through the suspension, another tribute to the damping system.” – CAR and DRIVER "The front seats are well-bolstered. Rear legroom is adequate in the sedan… and generous in the GT." – Kelley Blue Book "Seats are comfy and the outward vision works despite a wide rear pillar." – Road and Track NOTE: Information based on published model information found on manufacturers’ websites or in Owner’s Manuals as of October 2014. Hyundai says the new Sonata will be safer than ever, too, thanks to the stiffer body as well as new driver knee airbags and a host of electronic safety systems, including blind-spot detection, lanedeparture warning, radar cruise control, and automatic high beams. Inside, the Sonata has abandoned its symmetrical dashboard arrangement in favor of a more driver-focused design, replete with hexagons and trapezoids and lots of buttons. Hyundai says it paid particular attention to things like steering-wheel rim thickness, the clarity of a central driver-information display between the round primary instruments, switchgear feel, and sculpting the front seatbacks for added rear knee room. THE CAR CONNECTION: “…the 2015 Sonata gets a full redesign that subs in ‘dignified’ for ‘dramatic’ design-wise while at last delivering on the refinement and technology that the last generation promised. The 2015 Sonata features a classier and more sophisticated (while also more conservative) take on that current design – one that might very well age more gracefully than the innovative 2011-2014 Sonata. Achieved by adopting the automaker’s new Fluidic Sculpture 2.0 design language first seen on the 2015 Genesis, the new look dresses up the curves with a little more formality. The new car is just a smidge longer and wider, which boosts interior space, but overall what it adds up to, essentially, is a more subtle, nuanced look to the car as a whole. Changes are subtle but add up to a suit that looks more tailored, less modern. A new rear lip spoiler with chrome surround, as well as a dual exhaust with bright tips brings the Sonata in line with the mid-size-sedan mainstream, as do standard LED daytime running lamps.” EDMUNDS.COM: “The new Sonata… benefits from its predecessor's work. The current model was among the first in Hyundai's lineup skinned with the company's new design aesthetic of striking aerodynamic curves and surface creases. The new look elevated Hyundai's profile with buyers and raised the bar for design among staid midsize sedans… Mission accomplished, as the 2015 Hyundai Sonata dials back the bold exterior design for more conservative lines that follow the larger Genesis and Equus sedans. The basic proportions and roof line carry over, but the new Sonata grows slightly longer, wider and about 2 cubic feet roomier inside. It also receives a comprehensive chassis overhaul that promises more refined handling.” NOTE: The above information is based on published 2014 model information found on manufacturers’ websites or in Owner’s Manuals as of April 2014. Shifts handled in automatic mode are firm and prompt, and if the driver decides to call up ratios manually, he’ll be rewarded with far quicker gear swaps than are possible with the Sonata’s regular automatic. Better still, the turbocharged, direct-injected 1.6-liter four flexes its additional 18 lb-ft of torque and revs more freely than does the base 2.4-liter four.” CAR and DRIVER “…the new Sonata is probably good news for consumers cross-shopping at the other big box dealerships, the Eco 1.6T gives car enthusiasts an interesting gambit when we put on our recommendation hats and help friends and family buy non-enthusiast cars. The Eco's powertrain provides admirable economy without heavy batteries at a reasonable price point, and it's not a dog to drive. That's as exciting as this mostly staid and conservative segment gets, and that's worth something.” – Road and Track NOTE: Information based on published model information found on manufacturers’ websites or in Owner’s Manuals as of September 2014. Sport 2.0T models get an additional rear bumper fascia and quad exhaust tips, with showy 18-inch alloy wheels… New technologies lifted from the 2015 Genesis include blind spot detection, rear cross-traffic alert, lane departure warning, and active cruise control. There’s also a new Lane Change Assist system that places warning lamps in the side mirrors to warn of approaching vehicles. The Sonata otherwise includes seven airbags, now including a driver’s knee bag. In recent model years, the Sonata has earned a federal five-star Overall Rating as well as top 'good' IIHS results.” MOTOR TREND: “Hyundai turned heads with the 2011 Sonata, and for 2015, the Korean automaker is turning up the heat on the more popular Toyota Camry and Honda Accord. The 2011 Sonata put the midsize nameplate on the map, and now it's up to the thoroughly redone 2015 Sonata to continue that momentum. The turbocharged 2.0-liter engine returns in the 2015 Hyundai Sonata 2.0T, tweaked for better responsiveness and low-end torque. Using a turbocharger that has a smaller turbine and compressor wheel, the engine is rated at 245 hp and 260 lb-ft…” CNET: “Beneath the new looks, the 2015 Sonata features a host of upgrades to its interior, upping its dashboard tech with an available 8-inch touchscreen navigation system that rolls in HD Radio, one of two premium audio systems, and Pandora and SoundHound app support. iPhone users will be able to take advantage of Siri Eyes Free integration, with Apple CarPlay being ® added to the 2015 Sonata's feature set some time post-launch. Of course, Hyundai's BlueLink telematics and connectivity suite will make a return appearance, now boasting Google destination search.” AUTOBLOG: “The arrival of a new generation of a successful car is usually accompanied by a small surge in its price, ranging from a few hundred to a couple thousand dollars. Hyundai, though, is eschewing that practice, delivering its heavily redesigned Sonata for less than its predecessor… The Sonata Sport 2.0T soldiers on as the most powerful engine offering, offering 245 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque… It comes standard with pretty much everything found on the Limited, but adds 18-inch wheels, bi-xenon headlamps, larger brakes, a ‘sport instrument cluster,’ and upgraded leather seats with piping.” NOTE: The above information is based on published 2014 model information found on manufacturers’ websites or in Owner’s Manuals as of April 2014. Electric Power-Assisted Steering (EPAS) and Air Conditioning – EPAS is independent of the engine so it provides assistance when the engine is not running or is in electric drive mode; the air conditioning also features an electrically driven compressor so the interior temperature is maintained during engine-off driving and allows for more precise on-demand control, cutting fuel consumption. Lithium Polymer Battery technology: Lithium Polymer batteries are more compact than Nickel-Metal Hydride batteries so they don’t take up trunk room or back seat passenger room Benefits over Nickel-Metal Hydride batteries that are used in competitive hybrid models: o 25% less weight – improves overall vehicle weight and fuel economy o 40% less volume – improves interior spaciousness and cargo capacity o 10% more efficiency – smarter, better performance SONATA HYBRID AWARDS AND ACCOLADES: Sonata came in second in the mid-sized car class (Toyota Camry came in third) in the J.D. Power 2014 U.S. Initial SM Quality Study , while Hyundai was the highest ranked non-premium brand. The 2014 Sonata was named a “BEST BET” in the 34 edition of The Car Book, America’s original consumer car buying guide; this year marked the fourth consecutive year the Hyundai Sonata has earned this distinction. The Sonata Hybrid topped the Hybrid Car/EV category in the 2012 AutoPacific Vehicle Satisfaction Awards (VSA). Additionally, Hyundai finished fifth overall in the Popular Brand rankings. "True to Hyundai’s claim, the Sonata Hybrid’s powertrain is quite to an enthusiast’s liking. Unlike ‘conventional’ hybrids, there’s no CVT but rather an automatically stirred 6-speed. What’s more, through clever finessing of engine, electric motor and transmission, there’s no need for an intermediate torque converter. The result is a more sporty response to your right foot, with nary a CVT sensation of engine rpm/road speed disconnect." – Road and Track th NOTE: Information based on published model information found on manufacturers’ websites or in Owner’s Manuals as of September 2014. But this Hyundai clearly isn't for folks who want to stay the course. Rather, it's for those who look at other sedans and see a lack of innovation. Full of pleasant surprises, the 2014 Azera just might change the way you think about Hyundai.” – AutoTrader.com “Hyundai tuned the Azera's suspension for optimal ride comfort, and indeed, we've found that this large sedan rides quite nicely on the highway and around town. As a bonus, handling around turns is steady and secure… The interior's principal attraction, other than the long list of standard luxury features, is its roominess. All but the very tallest adults will find plenty of head- and legroom in both the front and rear seats, and accommodating four 6-footers at once is a legitimate proposition.” – Edmunds.com “Especially when upgraded with the Premium Package, the 2014 Hyundai Azera's passenger cabin pretty much tops its class and even puts pressure on some well-established luxury cars." – Kelley Blue Book "My brain was having a hard time processing the notion that I was in an Azera and not an Acura or Lexus, but I shouldn't have been surprised: every new Hyundai model in recent years has been a quantum leap over its direct predecessor in terms of design, styling, engineering, and perceived quality, and the Azera is no exception." – Automobile Magazine The 2013 Azera earned IIHS’s TOP SAFETY PICK. The 2012 Azera earned a GOOD DESIGN™ Award in the Transportation category for its innovative and unique three-door design; presented annually by The Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture and Design together with The European Centre for Architecture Art Design and Urban Studies. The 2012 Azera was named to the “Ward’s 10 Best Interiors” list by the editors of WardsAuto.com. The Azera was named a 2012 “Best Bet” in the Full Size Sedan category by Cars.com, a leading destination for online car shoppers. Azera joins five other Hyundai models previously selected to Cars.com’s 2012 list: Elantra (Compact Sedan), Sonata (Midsize Sedan), Genesis (Luxury Car), Genesis Coupe (Sports Car), and Tucson (Compact SUV/Crossover). “If you're getting the impression that we like the Azera, you haven't been led astray. A driver with the car's proximity key in her purse or pocket needs simply stand near the perimeter of the trunk for three seconds before that sucker pops right up, like it knows you're there. (It does.) I saw the quasi-sentient trunk in operation and it worked beautifully, allowing a bin-holding Mark Vaughn (of Autoweek) unfettered access to the boot. Cool trick.” “The headlining change for the Genesis is the addition of an all-wheel-drive system, dubbed HTRAC in Hyundai parlance, and developed with global supplier Magna Powertrain. The AWD setup uses an electric transfer case and a multi-plate clutch, and works in concert with the Genesis' two-mode suspension damping (Sport and Normal) to distribute front/rear torque based on load and slip. As a default, the all-wheel Genesis sends 60 percent of engine torque to the rear wheels; that can be increased to 90 percent in an aggressive handling situation, or reversed to send 90 percent of torque to the front wheels in a very low traction "escape" environment. Further, Hyundai tells us that a fuel economy mode can be triggered, presumably at a steady state cruise, with 100 percent of the power going to the rear wheels.” – Autoblog.com “Outside, it has a strikingly elegant new grille and side profile, part of “Fluidic sculpture 2.0.” The hood is long and flat, the cab sits rearward, the grille is more upright, the C-pillar is what you might call “sleek.” It certainly looks more elegant and expensive than the current Genesis sedan… Climb inside and the car immediately feels like it's moved up a class or two. The seats are almost an inch lower to the floor, for instance, which, surprisingly, makes a big difference in how sporty it feels when you're just sitting in it… Ultimately, with technological upgrades like automatic braking, lane-keep assist, blindspot detection and a host of other luxo features -- including a CO2 sensor for the interior to see if you're breathing out too much carbon dioxide -- the coming Genesis is worthy of spearheading Hyundai's new aim of including more premium luxury in its lineup.” – AutoWeek “…after seeing and driving the all-new 2015 Hyundai Genesis, we’re here to tell you that the Genesis is as regal, swift, quiet, and comfortable as nearly all of the best mid-size luxury cars out there. In other words, it’s the real luxury deal. Believe it. Hyundai’s all-new 2015 Genesis sedan wafts down the Arizona highways with the grace of a Mercedes-Benz E-Class. It’s not as scintillating as an Audi A6 or a Cadillac CTS, but its hushed interior feels just as luxurious. It feels substantial, like a BMW 5-Series, and—wait a minute, are we comparing a Hyundai to Audis, BMWs and Cadillacs? Yes we are. And that’s big news! Knowing the Genesis faces off with the Lexus GS, Acura RLX, and the aforementioned luxury German and American luxury sedans, Hyundai crafted a world class cabin with the best materials we’ve ever seen from the company.” – New York Daily News NOTE: The above information is based on published 2014 model information found on manufacturers’ websites or in Owner’s Manuals as of April 2014. The 2013 Santa Fe Sport, 2012 Azera and 2012 Accent have won the award previously. IntelliChoice and AutoPacific awarded the Equus with the 2012 Motorist Choice Award in the Luxury Lifestyle and High Tech category. th In the 16 annual Strategic Vision Total Value Awards, Equus beat out competitors like BMW and Mercedes to take first place in the luxury car segment. Additionally, Equus received the award for Best Model, and Hyundai ranked second overall in Total Value. J.D. Power and Associates designated the 2011 Equus as its most appealing large premium car in their 2011 Automotive SM Performance, Execution and Layout (APPEAL) Study annual owner survey. Equus achieved the 2012 Top Safety Pick honor from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). Top Safety Pick recognizes vehicles that do the best job of protecting people in front, side, rollover, and rear crashes based on “good” ratings in Institute tests. The 429-hp 5.0l V8 Tau engine that powers the Equus was named a Wards’ 10 Best Engine for 2011. “The Equus is solidly engineered, remarkably quiet and indulgently comfortable, and that's on top of its exceptional feature content and relatively affordable price… If you're wondering whether a value-oriented brand like Hyundai can produce a a luxury car, the cabin of the Equus will put your mind at ease. Just about every luxury and convenience feature found on a premium-badge car is available, and the quality of the design and materials is first class… In a segment where vehicles can be hopelessly complex, the Equus does a good job of keeping its vast amount of technology manageable.” – Edmunds “Hyundai techs whisk your Equus away to the dealership and leave in its place either a similarly spec'd sedan or a Genesis loaner. With value in mind, Consumers Digest ‘Best Buy’ ratings are based on behind-the-wheel assessment, safety ratings, ownership costs, warranty, price, comfort, ergonomics, styling and amenities. The Genesis Coupe earned “Best Value in America” honors for 2012 from Vincentric in the Mid-Size Coupe category. Vincentric measures cost-of-ownership using eight different cost factors and identifies winners based on vehicles that had lower than expected ownership costs given their market segment and price. “The 2014 Hyundai Genesis Coupe is a high-style and high-content sporty coupe… If you're looking to go quick without breaking the bank, the Genesis Coupe is a nice way to get there… Can we count sheet metal as a feature? Clearly, one of the Genesis Coupe's strongest selling points is its hot look.” – Kelley Blue Book’s kbb.com “With more power under the hood and added features, the 2013 Hyundai Genesis Coupe furthers its already favorable standing.” – Edmunds “Hyundai is ready to rock again with a much-improved version, with more power, better looks and first-rate refinement.” – Road and Track “The upgraded interior, serious bump in power and suspension tweaks all make the Genesis Coupe more attractive than ever… this two-door remains a performance bargain.” – Autoblog “At idle, the Genesis’s V-6 remains smooth and steady, and revs climb willingly with a blip of the throttle. On the highway, 2000 rpm in sixth gear motivates the Genesis along at a dash-indicated 70 mph. Floor it, and the comparatively mature exhaust note improves as engine speed climbs.” – Car and Driver “The Hyundai Genesis Coupe launched in 2009 to much enthusiast fanfare, and it quickly gained a following among turners and premium customers with sporty inclinations. fast-forward three years, and Hyundai appears to be gaining confidence and truly coming into its own in the athletic two-door segment, cranking up the power, adding a number of appearance-enhancing styling cues and improving the interior” – AutoWeek NOTE: Information based on published model information found on manufacturers’ websites or in Owner’s Manuals as of September 2014.
