Gahanna School 06-07 (Page 1) - Gahanna Jefferson Public Schools
Partnership News This is a publication of the School Business Advisory Council and the Gahanna-Jefferson Public Schools Volume 10, 2007-08 Wilbur C. Strait, Sr. Field By Justin Sanford Lincoln High School Athletic Director T his past December, the Gahanna-Jefferson Board of Education was presented with a multi-phased vision for improved athletic facilities at Gahanna Lincoln High School. Outdated facilities, inadequate seating capacity and a need to accommodate multiple events in one venue were the driving force behind such a vision. Therefore, the campaign to raise $2 million in private donations and contributions began. Optimistically, August 2007 was the target completion for Phase I: Construction and installation of the latest in synthetic field turf in the high school stadium, renovations to track and field events as well as relocating the varsity soccer programs from Middle School South to the High School Stadium. Phase I cost – $685,000. As the word quickly spread of the four-phase Facility Renovation Project throughout our students and community the excitement began to build, yet the total cost seemed almost insurmountable. Then a luncheon meeting took place between myself, our legendary coach of 56 years, Ed Rarey, and a former Gahanna Lincoln athlete, Mr. Wib Strait. See Wilbur C. Strait, Sr. Field, Page 2 The first phase of the facility renovation project consisted of installation of the latest in synthetic turf technology by Sprinturf and the relocation of track and field events. This will enable multiple programs and events to be played in the high school stadium without jeopardizing the integrity of the playing surface. Wilbur C. Strait, Sr. Field will be one of the premier fields in Central Ohio. GJEF Kicks-Off Annual Fund By Shelly Igdaloff GJEF Board Member W ith a mission to “Promote Excellence,” the Gahanna Jefferson Education Foundation (GJEF) has made extraordinary strides. Through the collective efforts of generous business partners and an overwhelmingly supportive community, GJEF has generated over $300,000 in contributions. These dollars currently support many Education Grants of Excellence and Intervention MiniGrants not available through traditional means. Every building in our district have requested and benefited from these grants. To ensure the continuation and growth of our Education Foundation, this fall, the first Annual Fund of the GJEF will be initiated. It is our sincere hope that concerned community members, parents, alumni and district staff join GJEF in making an investment in the future education of our students. The GJEF Annual Fund is scheduled to begin the first week in Wib Strait, Class of '58 (seated center) is joined by brother Raleigh (left) and extended family at the Gahanna Lincoln Athletic Fundraiser featuring NFL stars Tony Dorsett, Bubba Paris and Greg Bell. Included in the evening's activities was the formal announcement that the Gahanna Lincoln football field will be named in honor of Wib's father, Mr. Wilbur C. Strait, Sr., Class of '34. October and is endorsed by our Community Co-chairs: Russ Cochrane, Mo Dioun, Bob Kessler, Phil Koppel, Yolanda Harris and Greg Nelson. A donation envelope has been enclosed for your convenience. Giving Recognition Circles: Academic Circle – $25-$99; Scholar’s Circle – $100-$249; Dedication Circle – $250$499; Legacy Circle – $500$999; and Heritage Circle –$1,000 and up. Gifts of any amount are always welcome. 2 School Business Advisory Council 2007-2008 2007-2008 Wilbur C. Strait, Sr. Field Continued from Page 1 The conversation throughout the meeting was that of two great friends talking about one another’s health, travels, business and this project. Coach Rarey expressed what great impact such a project would have upon future student athletes of Gahanna Lincoln, just as athletics had impacted the life of Mr. Strait. It was as if time reverted back to 1958, as coach and athlete intently conversed. Within a moment it was evident that this optimistic target, a vision that had many doubters, had the financial support to become a reality. Unofficially, it would appear that a Strait family member has gone through the Gahanna Lincoln High Schoolin each of the past seven decades. Through the generous donation made by Mr. Wib Strait and the rich heritage of the Strait family in Gahanna, we are honored to present to this community, alumni and student athletes to come, the Wilbur C. Strait, Sr. Field – named in honor of Mr. Wib Strait’s father, a 1934 alumnus of Gahanna Lincoln High School. Although a great portion of the first phase was donated by Mr. Strait, there are many others who contributed to this project at the Varsity Grant Level and above. We are grateful for the contributions from: David Clark, Jeff Reeves, Bill Tomko, Benchmark Bank, Signature Control, Dan Floyd, Don McKillip, Mike Fritz, Mitch Brown, Gahanna Lacrosse Assoc., Dr. James Hutta, Kelly Law, Mindy Sanford, GLIMB, Greg Levine, Gahanna Football, Gahanna Athletic Boosters, Gahanna CIC and Mr. John Hickman. Through these individuals, businesses, boosters and others, we’re moving onto our next phase and hope that you’ll support this vision. A complete listing of the project and how you can contribute can be found at www.gahannalincolnsports.com or by contacting the Athletic Office at 614-478-5518. Foundation Continues to Flourish By Dale Foor Coordinator, Community Service W OW—a great time was had by all! Over 500 guests attended the third Celebration of Excellence last March at Jefferson Country Club, enjoying the festive music and delicious fare provided by 25 of the area’s finest restaurants. Over 500 silent and live auction items went to the highest bidder highlighting an evening that generated over $84,000 for GJEF and an additional $7,000 for the stadium renovation project. Many hands across the community contributed to the successful effort. A very special “thank you” to all our business partners with special recognition to our generous $5,000 Corporate Sponsors – The Kroger Company, M/I Homes and The Stonehenge Company. While all had a great evening, the real winners are the students and staff across the district that will benefit from a new allocation of $58,000 in competitive grants and related projects to “Promote Excellence.” Mark your calendar for March 1, and plan to support and attend Celebration of Excellence 2008! Highlights of the trip included a tour of the Pentagon, meetings with Senator George Voinovich and Congressman Pat Tiberi (pictured above on the Capital steps), and a personal session with Senator Robert Dole who shared information regarding the funding and building of the WWII Memorial. JESS HOWARD ELECTRIC SCHOLARSHIP Emily Gyde Casey Cumbo "After the completion of the Lincoln High School Veterans' Memorial, a trip to Washington, D.C. was a maturing experience for me. Though the project took much time and hard work to finish, to see it compared to the World War II Memorial in D.C. opened my eyes to just how momentous our contribution was. We were able to make comparisons between the two monuments, something very few schools or even cities can claim. It is my hope that the students and citizens of Gahanna will treat the memorial with the same respect and dignity as any memorial seen in Washington, D.C. or elsewhere." – Anna Adair GAHANNA AREA FUND SCHOLARSHIPS Anna Adair, Emily Gyde, Amy Shalosky, Anna Treskunova, Aleksandr Yurchak DR. Congratulations! 5 6 School Business Advisory Council 2007-2008 2007-2008 Celebrate Excellence in the District! • “To Serve and To Honor,” a film produced by the Lincoln High School (LHS) TV production class, won a prestigious CINE Golden Eagle Award! The CINE is recognized internationally as a symbol of the highest production standards in filmmaking and videography. • Tom Gregory, LHS television/speech teacher, had the distinct honor of being selected to receive two notable awards: the State of Ohio American Legion’s Teacher of the Year award and the Cable in the Classroom’s Leaders in Learning award that recognizes the nation’s most innovative education leaders. • Joe Gottron, G-J parent and business partner, received the Gahanna-Jefferson Education Association Friend of Education award for his dedication in helping students through raising funds for the LHS memorial and his active role on the business advisory council. • Throughout the year, Blacklick Elementary staff met for professional development focusing on math. A Family Math Night in March had students and their families participating in number-sense activities. April brought illustrator/authors Jerry and Gloria Pinkney who met with all K-5 classrooms to discuss focused writing and illustration. • Middle School South built a student broadcast studio from a $3,000 Martha Holden Jennings Foundation Grant they received. Throughout the school year, approximately 10 students worked the live broadcast while others videotaped and created public service announcements. • The Greater Columbus Arts Council’s Artists-in-Schools program funded artist AbdulAleem’s weeklong visit to High Point Elementary. This integrated unit had students learning across content areas about Africa as well as matching their drum skills with the visiting artist’s. • Royal Manor Elementary students had several author visits addressing literacy goals. Mia Coulton and her yellow lab Danny, who is featured in her illustrated books, visited classrooms to inform students about developing and writing story ideas. Author Steven Kellogg also spoke on the creative process and illustrated characters from his book. • Groups of Middle School West students drummed alongside Eric Paton, musician and educator from Capital University who specializes in percussion from around the world. Featured were the dynamic Taiko drumming of Japan and the infectious Brazilian rhythms of samba. • Students at Lincoln Elementary learned lessons in character, work ethic, respect and responsibility through “A Totally Courageous Basketball Exhibition” with motivational speaker Steve Granata. Using entertaining basketball skills, Granata communicated a powerful message of excellence to students, encouraging them to be courageous and to live out their dreams. • Education opportunities for Goshen Lane Elementary students continued throughout the summer months. Students and their parents could attend Summer Reading Nights at the school’s library with familybased literacy activities. Additionally, the annual “A Space and a Place to Be” summer day camp emphasized hands-on art, music and drama activities for students while they participated in a community project. • Third-grade classrooms studied different biomes and wrote informational paragraphs as part of two science projects at Jefferson Elementary. Students made discoveries about temperate rain forests, deserts, oceans, tundra and grasslands, and created a 3-D biome for the school’s Open House/Related Arts Night. • At Middle School East’s allschool Veterans Day assembly, 1st Sergeant Jeff Mers of the Aircraft Maintenance Squad (and a MSE parent) presented on the significance of the day. The Gahanna VFW Post 4719, members of Lima Company and members of the 121st Air Refueling Squad spoke and answered questions in individual classrooms. • Fifth-grade classes at Chapelfield Elementary initiated a service project that followed the fifth-grade social studies standards on problem solving. Through a series of fund-raising events, care packages were created to send to American soldiers serving overseas. Students wrote letters to request donations from businesses and friendly letters to soldiers to place inside the packages. Leadership Academy on Rigor, Relevance and Relationships By Shirley Hamilton Assistant Superintendent, GahannaJefferson Public Schools I n mid-June, over 150 teachers and administrators attended a Leadership Academy, conducted by the district, with national experts on Rigor, Relevance and Relationships. Research into hundreds of successful schools during the last eight years recommends building educational programming around these three common threads, thus creating an ideal “model school” for educating our children to thrive in the 21st century. Courses designed around rigorous and challenging curriculum principles stimulate learning that is relevant to our world. Schools developing a culture of rigor and excellence that challenges every student to achieve high standards helps the students see the relevance of what they are learning; they are more motivated to learn. Additionally, Model Schools recognize that in this ever-changing world, success depends on the art of collaboration and the strength of building solid relationships. The curriculum is most fully enhanced when students can foster better relationships with peers and teachers. Teams of leaders and administrators districtwide are working on action plans to achieve goals established at the academy to implement the three R’s in their buildings and classrooms for the ‘07-’08 school year. The new Lincoln High School Science Academy is offering a tract in both Robotic Engineering and Medicine/Health. The engineering program includes Space Technology and Virtual Space Tech, while the medical tract offers Microbiology and a new, yearlong Anatomy & Physiology class. All Academy classes will use a common thinking model and graphic organizers, and learn principles of communications from engineering, project development, proper experimentation, and use of appropriate design tools. Each course will also have an on-line component of learning, and each student in the Academy will eventually be doing an independent research project. Gahanna-Jefferson Public Schools 7 The Power of Partnerships (Did You Know…) ❖ Middle School West collaborated with Leadership Columbus and a host of community leaders from Nationwide Insurance, Crowne Plaza and Loft Hotels, Ernst & Young, and Huntington Banks in a Life Skills Development program for 8th-grade students. ❖ Art students at Goshen Lane Elementary will proudly display both current work and art from the Goshen Lane permanent collection at the neighborhood Wes Banco Bank. ❖ The Middle School South PTO worked in collaboration with local law enforcement sponsoring a “Community Connection” meeting to inform parents and students about Internet safety issues. ❖ Students from both Chapelfield and Royal Manor elementary schools had written stories selected from 1,100 entries for the Columbus Children’s Theatre writing project. Katie Conkel, 4th-grader at Chapelfield, and Margaret Kraus, 1st-grader at Royal Manor, will have their stories “Picture This” and “When the Artist Meets Picasso” produced as plays to be performed across Central Ohio as part of the theatre group’s 2007 season. ❖ Benchmark Bank has enhanced the curricular program of Jefferson and High Point elementary schools, Middle School East and the Career Passport Classes at Lincoln High School by sponsoring USA TODAY newspapers and teacher resources. ❖ Lincoln Elementary’s new 5th-grade performance choir, Lincoln Pride, performed at the Gahanna Senior Center, the school’s Veterans Day assembly, Port Columbus Airport as well as many other venues. The choir activities were funded by GJEF including choir members learning how to use technology to create pod casts. ❖ Middle School East’s community outreach was led by their student council including the collection of $1,085 for the First Friday Foundation that raised awareness of prostate cancer. Another activity had students playing bingo with seniors from Sunshine Retirement Home. A running log of service activities kept by 7th-grade language arts classes culminated in recognition of students at the annual “Hero” celebration. ❖ Gahanna Rotary members and Ohio Dominican baseball players served as Ohio Reads tutors in a yearlong commitment helping students at Royal Manor Elementary. The mentoring and academic support by these volunteers establishes positive relationships and inspires children. ❖ Joel and Amy Hopkins, owners of The Original Pizza Pan, have generously offered to be one of Middle School West’s greatest Renaissance sponsors. Pizza Pan will be donating pizza each month for a Renaissance “Lunch with the Principal.” What a wonderful example of community/business partners taking an active role in their schools! ❖ Last December, 5th-grade students prepared 70 boxes of “goodies” that were sent to a Chapelfield Elementary alumnus and Marine stationed in Iraq for distribution to soldiers. ❖ This past summer, Tim Hortons sponsored one student from Goshen Lane Elementary and one from Royal Manor Elementary to a weeklong adventure camp in Canada. ❖ A yearlong theme, “Together We Can Make a Difference,” had Blacklick Elementary students focused on schoolwide service projects. The school created over 114 fleece blankets for children in need through a “Coin Wars” activity that included graphing totals collected each day. As well, 375,000 pop tabs were collected to provide a donation to the Ronald McDonald House. The “Excellence“ and “Did You Know“ bulleted points are just a small sampling of the remarkable activities happening in the district. Art and architecture technology students spent many hours transforming the Lincoln High School Courtyard into an arboretum-like art garden. Grants from the Greater Columbus Arts Council, GJEF and Home Depot funded the renovation. Expertise was obtained from the Gahanna Historical Society, Gahanna Ohio Herb Education Center and local artist Steven Bush. The partnership benefits provided by The Stonehenge Company impact many district programs. The $5,000 corporate sponsorship to GJEF funds scholarships for the architecture program and provides $2,000 for motivational mini-grants for the district’s special education programs. Stonehenge President Mo Dioun is engaged in the scholarship selection process. Pictured with Dioun are finalists (L-R) Joey Mizera – $100; Alex Behn – $500; and Alex Fritz – $1,000. An additional $2,000 will be awarded to current 2nd-year of college alums of the Gahanna-Eastland Program. "The Stonehenge Company is enjoying its involvement and relationship with the Architecture & Construction Management (ACM) program. It is an honor to work with individuals who show potential as future members of the design and construction industry. We enjoyed taking the ACM students on a tour of Creekside and discussing many of the design and architectural elements of the project. Also, it was a great experience to spend time with selected students on their architecture projects. We look forward to partnering with Gahanna-Jefferson Schools for many years to come." – Mo Dioun President of The Stonehenge Company 8 School Business Advisory Council 2007-2008 Grants Surpass $100,000 Mark! By Dale Foor Coordinator, Community Service O ver the past three years, Gahanna Jefferson Education Foundation (GJEF) has been blessed to host successful fund-raising events and has received donations providing over $300,000 in revenue. While building an endowment for the future, GJEF has also dedicated over $100,000 in competitive Education Grants of Excellence assisting teachers in the enrichment of their programs. Included in the most recent projects were grants supporting the Renaissance program at Middle School East and Middle School West, after-school projects including science and music clubs at Lincoln Elementary and sign language at Middle School South. A summer day camp at Goshen Lane, white board technology at Chapelfield and a sound system to support the 60student jazz band at Middle School West have also been funded. Overall, in the past three years over 60 Grants of Excellence and 25 mini-grants for intervention programs have been funded. With plans underway for Celebration 2008 and a GJEF Annual Fund in place, the future of Excellence Grants looks very bright! Treasuring the Arts at Chapelfield Elementary By Mary Otting Communications Specialist S ix Chapelfield Elementary students had the opportunity to attend the Columbus College of Art and Design (CCAD) this past summer through a scholarship received at their school’s awards assembly. Students Lauren Carpenter (1st-grade), Chloe Garrett (2ndgrade), Malina Ransom (3rdgrade), Matt Regner (4th-grade) and fifth-graders Jhoan Salazar and Preston Reese were the first recipients to be given the memorial scholarships in honor of former art teacher Percy Jenks who taught 12 years at the school. “Percy started the Art to Treasure project raising funds from parents purchasing a book bag, mouse pad or magnet embellished with their child’s artwork,” said Principal Barb Murdock. “The project has allowed the school to frame permanent pieces of student art for display in the Chapelfield hallways. The decision was made to also direct a portion of the profits toward the CCAD scholarships each year.” Murdock continued, “Our approach at Chapelfield Elementary is to develop the whole child. Having a proficiency in the arts—whether it’s music, dance or visual arts—also requires opportunities for further development just like our traditional subjects.” This year’s fifth-grade recipients Salazar and Reese have fond memories of Mrs. Jenks, which is particularly significant since their skills were expanded under her tutelage. Hopes are high at Chapelfield Elementary to continue awarding the CCAD scholarships yearly through donations and funds from the Art to Treasure project. Principal Murdock added that it is a fitting tribute to Mrs. Jenks who cared so much about art and giving Chapelfield students an experience they can treasure and use in the future. Chapelfield fifth-grade recipients of the CCAD scholarships to attend summer art workshops are (L-R) Jhoan Salazar and Preston Reese. Four other students also received the scholarships in honor of former art teacher Percy Jenks. Congratulations to the fifth group of Lincoln High School Alumni Hall of Fame recipients (L-R) Brig.
