T
he Super Bowl is the culmination of an exciting NFL
season for football fanatics. Edgewood is part of a
tradition that directs all that hype and energy towards
fighting hunger and the chance to give back to the
community.
DETAILS
On Sunday, Feb. 2, Edgewood will be part of a national movement
by participating in the annual Souper Bowl of Caring. Last year,
more than $7.5 million in cash and food items was collected by
8,167 groups nationwide. Our event, which begins at 4:30
p.m., brings church members and friends together
for joyful fellowship as well as good food. Bring
a pot of chili to enter in the chili cook-off
competition or bring non-competitive
chips, dips, soft drinks, or desserts to
share. Food will be served starting around
5 p.m. after the judging ends.
◗ What: Souper
Bowl of Caring
◗ When: 4:30
p.m., Sunday,
Feb. 2
◗ Where: EPC
fellowship hall
◗ Cost: $1 (or
more) or canned
goods
Admission is a donation of $1 (or more)
or canned goods for the Men’s Firehouse
Shelter in downtown Birmingham. We’ll
have the game – and the commercials – on
a big screen but we’ll adjourn at halftime
so that serious football fans can get home to
concentrate on rooting for Peyton Manning’s
Denver Broncos or Russell Wilson’s Seattle Seahawks.

The youth will be on hand to help, especially if our friends from the
Arc of Jefferson County join us. If you need more information or

Reasons to look forward to February
L
ast week three different church folk told me that they can’t wait for
February to arrive. One person said that she strongly dislikes (OK she
hates) the dark, dreary days of January. Another person had pipes burst
during the cold spell and is still working with the insurance company and
repair people to get their home back in order. He is hoping that February
will bring warmer weather. And the third person shared that she is looking
forward to February because she loves Valentine’s Day. She likes surprising
co-workers and others with small chocolate gifts of love and appreciation.
In all honesty, I am also really looking forward to the month of February and here are
three reasons why:
◗ February lectionary texts are some of my favorite featuring Jesus’ teaching and preaching from his Sermon on the Mount series. The newsletter lists the weekly lectionary
text. I’d like to invite you to join me in praying with the weekly text. Then if something
stirs inside of you during the week let me know your insights, frustrations, or joys about
the particular lectionary text. You can e-mail me at [email protected], call me on
my cellphone at 942-5907 or come by for a visit. Let’s discuss how God is nudging us to
wrestle with and ponder Jesus’ famous teachings.
◗ Saturday, Feb. 8, is “set-up-my-office day.” My office is still not set up and could use
some loving TLC from those of you who like to decorate. I have my own stuff, I just
need help hanging some things and making my new office feel cozy. So from 9 to 11 a.m.
anyone who likes decorating or just telling others how to decorate, can join me in fixing
up my new office.
◗ We’re expecting a new baby in February! Lili and Brandon Kane are expecting their
first child, Nora Ann. Nora’s due date is Wednesday, Feb. 12, but we’ll have to wait and
see what day she picks as her birthday. I’m so excited to meet and welcome our first
Edgewood baby of the year. Let’s continue to keep Lili and Brandon and baby Nora in
our prayers for a safe delivery. (Also, Jennifer and Melanie Knight are expecting our
second Edgewood baby of the year in late March! Let’s continue to keep Jennifer and
Melanie in our prayers as we await the birth of their baby girl.)
Blessings!

Glory to God: a moment with our hymnal
“Sometimes a Light Surprises”
Hymn 800: “Sometimes a Light Surprises,” is a beautiful text of living and dying in
Christ.
Verse 1: Sometimes a light surprises the child of God who sings; it is the Lord who rises
with healing in his wings; when comforts are declining, he grants the soul again a season
of clear shining to cheer it after rain.
Verse 2. In holy contemplation we sweetly then pursue the theme of God’s salvation and
find it ever new; set free from present sorrow, we cheerfully can say, “Let the unknown
tomorrow bring with it what it may.”
About the poet, according to Wikipedia: William Cowper (Nov., 26, 1731 – April, 25,
1800) was an English poet and hymnodist. One of the most popular poets of his time,
Cowper changed the direction of 18th century nature poetry by writing of everyday life
and scenes of the English countryside. In many ways, he was one of the forerunners of
Romantic poetry. Samuel Taylor Coleridge called him “the best modern poet,” whilst
William Wordsworth particularly admired his poem Yardley-Oak.
The text is set to the Salley Gardens tunes, known variously as Irish or English by Alfred
Fedak, a noted organist and composer who serves as minister of music and arts at Westminster Presbyterian Church on Capitol Hill in Albany, N.Y.

get organized and begin the search process. Here’s a look at the committee members:
◗ Dave Garza: Dave is an ordained elder who works with our youth group. He is an associate professor of chemistry at Samford University. His wife Jennifer is our fellowship

Kevin has been a member at Edgewood since 1996. He has served a number of terms
on Session and the Personnel Committee. He currently leads discussion for the Sunday
worship reflection circle and the Friday morning men’s Bible study. Last year, Kevin
earned a Certificate in Spiritual Formation from Columbia Theological Seminary. Kevin
is married to Laura and occupies the front pew during worship with children Sam, Sarah
and Ben. Kevin is also an attorney, working for Regions Bank. In his spare time, he enjoys riding his bicycle and recently has taken up golf.
◗ Frances Waller: Frances is both an ordained elder and deacon who has been a member for about 15 years and sings in the Chancel Choir. She currently serves on presbytery’s Commission on Preparation for Ministry, which shepherds seminary students and
candidates for ministry. She is a social worker in private practice, specializing in adoptions. Husband Karl and son Phillip, who also sings in the choir, are members along with
daughter Tara Hewitt and her husband Tasker and their children Windham and Laura
Catherine. That’s just two of Frances’ four children and four grandchildren. “I believe
serving on this committee is the most significant involvement I will ever have (or have
had) in the life of this church,” she says.
◗ Stewart Wilbanks: An ordained elder and current member of Session leading our
missions ministry, Stewart is a native of Alexander City and lives in Vestavia Hills with
wife, Ashley, and their two daughters, Sarah Stewart and Selia. He is a solo practice attorney. “I am honored to serve on the pastor nominating committee,” Stewart says, “and
I am humbled by the trust that the congregation has placed in my care for the selection
of our future pastor.”

Matthew 28
Haiti support
Since 1990, Matthew
Twenty-Eight has spread
the Good News about
Jesus Christ’s love to the
people in the Central
Plateau of Haiti. Among
its efforts there, the
group supports the
entire operation of an
orphanage; provides
medical services in
villages without health
care; and is building new
houses for earthquake
refugees.
Each Sunday during
the worship service,
Edgewood collects
a special offering to
support this mission
in Haiti. We ask our
members to consider
contributing a “nickel
a meal.” That’s $1.05 a
week.

To make it easier for members to contact Session members and ministry teams, new
email addresses linked to the church’s Web address are being set up. Session approved
the move at its January meeting. The effort is a continuation of work to consolidate
church communications begun during the pastoral transition.
The new ministry team emails will be linked to the Session members who are leading
those units, making it easier for members to contact church leaders. Session members
and deacons will have individual email addresses based on first initial/lastname@
edgewoodpc.org. This limits the use of personal email addresses for church-related
communications and reinforces our digital identity. Here’s how you can now reach the
ministries of the church:
